Is Refacing Cabinetry a Solid Investment?

Published by under Uncategorized

Being a Custom Cabinetmaker and Finish Carpenter I’m frequently asked what I think about refacing cabinetry as opposed to demolishing the old cabinets and starting from scratch.

I generally pride myself as someone who has an open mind. While I have strong opinions on a variety of topics… I like to offer options to people rather than to come off as someone who knows it all. Besides, I don’t “know it all.”

That being said, to say I’m not a fan of refacing cabinetry would be an understatement! I’ll give you the Pro’s and Con’s and let you be the judge.

If you have a refacing specialist in your home you are likely to hear something like…

Refacing cabinetry is an inexpensive way to update your kitchen’s look with a minimum of inconvenience and without all the dirt, debris and noise associated
with demolishing your kitchen and starting over.

Now, to be fair, there is some truth in the statement above. Refacing does typically cost less than having a custom cabinetmaker, like myself,
completely redo your cabinetry. (Though it’s not inexpensive!!!) The project will also be completed in less time than a custom cabinet job.

The problem is, they make no mention of quality or durability or improved functionality and forget getting a decent warranty!

In order to understand the problems with refacing cabinetry you need to know a little about the process. They typically remove and throw away the: doors, drawer fronts, door hinges, drawer slides and cabinet door knobs (if any).

Then, the cabinets are “roughed-up” by sanding and sometimes a chemical stripper is used as well. The refacing installer then adheres a wood veneer to the exposed surfaces. Typically, the veneer has a PSA backing (Pressure Sensitive Adhesive) and it is firmly pressed to the old wood surface to make it’s bond.

The veneer is trimmed and detailed. A new wood stain and protective finish is applied. The final touches include installing the new doors, drawer fronts,
miscellaneous hardware and possibly the attached moldings.

The Con’s come down to Quality and Freedom! The PSA wood veneer is very thin and very frequently starts to bubble or lift off the old wood surface within a year to 18 months.

If you happen to catch something on an edge of the veneer you may very well peel it back or tear it altogether. If someone, say a child, happens to scratch
the veneer surface it will most likely expose the old wood surface as the veneer is very thin.

As far as freedom goes, you didn’t get to change the cabinet’s interior. If you had fixed shelves before, you probably didn’t get to upgrade to adjustable
shelves as this is too much work in retrofitting.

If the old kitchen layout wasn’t to your liking, your newly “updated” kitchen isn’t going to work any different.

The list goes on and on…

By the way, if you’re still not convinced, ask around and find someone who refaced their kitchen two years ago or more and find out if they’d do it again. Just make sure they don’t work for the refacing company!

Air Purifiers

Published by under Home Appliances

Clean air, healthy living and a long life are just some of the chief concerns of humans worldwide. Especially in our cities, the effects of industrialization, increased vehicular traffic and general climatic conditions have made finding clean air an almost impossible task.

Air conditioners have proven useful, but only to the extent of keeping the temperature around us comfortable. They have been unable to enhance the basic quality of the air we breather. Governmental agencies like the Environment Protection Agency have officially declared that poor indoor air quality is the number one cause of increasing numbers of asthma sufferers. Nearly one third of all Americans suffer from asthma or allergic diseases, the causes of which can be directly attributed to the above mentioned poor air quality.

But do we have any control over the air we breathe? Do we have the wherewithal to remove the pollution, dust and irritants in the air to make it fresh and wholesome again? Of course we do! With the technology that has come to be known and adopted in every home. With a technology called an air purifier. Most American homes have started using air purifiers to control and regulate the quality of indoor air and the results are already showing in the increased health and vitality of most families.

Air purifiers have been a discovery that has put the freshness back into our lungs and once again, given us the option of breathing in clean, healthy air. There are hundreds of air purifiers available in the market. They work on a wide range of air purification techniques and processes, but they all have one objective in mind – that of removing several kinds of pollutants, allergants and irritants!

This was the first thing I looked for when I bought my air purifier as I wanted to use it to keep my house free of these in addition to purifying the air. But I had a rather difficult time choosing the right air purifier as there are specific air purifiers for various elements like dust, pollen, animal shedding, tobacco smoke and even mold and mildew. I wanted an air purifier comprehensively germs, pollution and other general conditions while giving me clean and wholesome air.

Fortunately, most technologies used in air purifiers like carbon filters, HEPA, ionic lamp and ozone filter, do this. They comprehensively remove most contaminants in the indoor air in houses and living areas. But probably more important for a prospective buyer, are details like the area in which an air purifier will be used, the efficiency of the air purification filter, the noise level (yes! Studies reveal that this is a major concern among users!) and warranty and replacement details.

The size of the area where the ir purifier is likely to be used is of especial importance because using a small volume air purifier in a large room could not only decrease the efficiency of the air purifier, but also result in over burdening the filtration system, thereby casing excessive production of nitrogen oxide (especially in ozone filter air purifiers) which can prove harmful for human consumption. When you do therefore go in for an air purifier, do keep these details in mind.

Along with air purifiers and other equipment comes the need for internal cleansing and nourishing. We like these nutritional supplements with high electrical vibration: Electrical Body Products

Why You Should Fuel Your Generator With Natural Gas

Published by under Home Appliances

For those people who have invested or thinking about investing in a power generator for back-up power needs, extra electrical needs, or portable electrical needs, a big consideration should be the type of fuel that is used. There are many sources of fuel for providing electrical energy from the generator including gasoline, natural gas, diesel, solar, wind, and a few other fuel sources as well. The type of fuel selected for a generator can have big impacts on everything from the environment, cost, and electrical output. Sources like gasoline and natural gas are non-renewable where as solar and wind come free and are renewable. For continuous, high energy output, gasoline and natural gas are better fuel sources. These are just a few of the considerations. Natural gas, however has some major points over the other fuel sources and is recommended in this article.

Why is natural gas a good fuel source for generators? Well first of all, a lot of homes use natural gas to fuel stoves, ovens, and even fireplaces. Those who have paid the gas bill will often find it is much cheaper than the electrical bill. For those unlucky people with electric ranges, electric water heating, and other electricity dependent heating, the high price of electricity is a big cash vacuum. The price of natural gas is very good compared to other fuel sources as well. The energy output provided verses the cost is better than that of diesel and gasoline.

When it comes to generators, most backup generators work better with natural gas because the supply is already coming to the location. Most homes have a pipeline for their natural gas that can be harnessed by backup generators to supply electricity when other sources are not working. Automatic transfer switches can determine when there are blackouts or other electrical problems and supply electrical power produced from the location’s natural gas source. This means that there is no need to purchase any additional fuel for the generator as it is already pulling from a decent costing fuel source in natural gas. This can not be achieved with some of the other fuel sources as well.

Another reason natural gas should be used in power generators is it’s energy production which is comparable to that of gasoline and diesel. For people who have natural gas products, the energy output is not even noticeable but the cost is. Natural gas makes the energy to cost ratio efficient. For portable generators, the same output can also be achieved as natural gas can be supplied to the generator much like how a barbecue grill is supplied. This makes supplying fuel to portable units easy as all that is needed is a canister of natural gas that just needs to be plugged in to the fuel line.

Natural gas is also cleaner than both diesel and gasoline. Natural gas will cause less engine buildup and lead to longer lifetime of a costly generator. There are also natural gas conversion kits for many types of generators that allow changing the fuel type. These conversion kits can help extend the usefulness of old generators by using natural gas as the fuel type instead.

Natural gas is not only a good energy source for homes but also a good one for portable or emergency power generators as well. They provide high, continuous amounts of energy at a very efficient cost to both residential and business users.

Visit Powered Generators.com to help you find an affordable generator for your home as well as determine the right wattage to run the necessary appliances and other electronics in case of blackouts. Be sure to Jason’s section on natural gas generators for a continuation to this article and other informative information on this low-cost fuel source.

Taking Care of Oak Office Furniture

Published by under Furniture

Taking Care of Oak Office Furniture

After you have reached the status at your office that you have been working towards, choosing beautiful office furnishings should be your next undertaking. This is not something that should be taken lightly since it directly reflects your standing in the company and you’re aesthetic taste. Choosing oak office furniture will give your space a distinguished look and set it apart from others. Some people think it is difficult to care for, but the reality is that oak furniture poses no maintenance problems.

If you already have oak furniture in you office there are a few things you should be careful with. First, your office should have a good air conditioning system since oak is rather vulnerable to changes in humidity and temperature changes. Extreme weather conditions could cause the furniture to expand and contract. Oak furniture should also be kept out of the direct sunlight so it will not be damaged. Heavy drapes for your office are a good investment if your furnishings are oak.

Furniture should not be moved any more than what is absolutely necessary. It is best to decide where you want it and just leave it there. Moving the furniture frequently can result in unsightly scratches that will mar the beauty of the furniture. Use the cabinets and drawers gently and dust your oak furniture frequently.

Wood polish should be used very sparingly on your furniture. Excess use can cause excess dust to settle on the furniture which will ruin its look and rob moisture from the wood. If you spill liquid on the furniture, don’t use harsh chemicals that will dry the wood.

Another thing that is important when caring for oak furniture is the use of coasters. This will keep the moisture from the glass from being sucked into the wood. Moisture can be very damaging to wood furnishings, so you must be careful and prevent spills. If you accidentally spill something like perfume, alcohols, or nail polish on oak furniture, never rub it. This will just aggravate the situation and destroy the effect of the furniture.
While you do have to take a few precautions, your furniture will always look elegant and classy. Oak furniture will create a stunning ambience for any office, creating a space you can be proud of. When decorating with oak office furniture, be sure to treat it with care in order to maintain its beauty for years to come.

Windows and Screens

Published by under Windows

At the height of summer, the only way to enjoy the evening breeze is to be seated behind window screens; otherwise mosquitoes and gnats will ruin your evening. Screens, especially on doors, are easy to rip, so it’s a good idea to know how to simply repair your screens so you can continue to enjoy summer breezes.

This is an easy task, and even the “unhandiest” can manage it. With a few simple materials, you can keep your screens repaired, no matter how many times kids or dogs go crashing through them. Most of these materials are probably already laying around the house: wood putty, brad nails, household cement and screening material and a few tools such as scissors, a screen rolling tool, a razor knife, a square, a stapler, a needles pliers, and 1X2 stock to stretch the screening and 1X4 stock for wedges.

A small hole in a screen is the easiest to repair with a patch. This will work with metal and fiberglass screens, whereas plastic screens will have to be replaced. Simply measure the hole and buy a screen patch or cut a patch from a roll of screening. For a small hole, you will need a patch a half inch larger than the hole, for a large whole, make the patch an inch larger. Unravel a few strands of screening around edge of the patch and interweave them with the screening by bending either by hand or with a needle nosed screwdriver.

Replacing the entire screen is also simple, but is done differently with a metal frame than with a wooden frame.

For a metal frame, place the entire screen on a surface large enough to support it. Remove the rubber edging and set aside and remove the old screening. You can save the screening for future use as patches. Measure the required amount of screening and cut a piece from the screening roll that is a little bit larger than the opening. Using the screen rolling tools, tighten the screening into groove and replace the rubber edging, working your way slowly around the window or door. After the screening is fitted in, cut off any excess Wit the razor knife and your screen window or door is ready to be installed.

For a wooden frame, you will need to use the 1X2 stocks that is slightly wider than the frame. Cut the new screening from the replacement roll, Wit sufficient excess. Staple the screening across the top edge of the window or door, and nail the bottom cleat to a bench and install the cleats. Roll the screening over the cleats and nail in place. Insert the wedges between the cleats and the screen frame and tap them until the screening is taut. Staple the screening in place every few inches. Trim excess and countersink the brads to the screen molding and fill the holes with wood putty. then staple the whole screen into place by working from the center brace out. When you remove the wedges, the screen should remain taut. Use the screen rolling tools to replace the screen moldings and then just sit back and admire your work!

Choices in Window Hardware

Published by under Windows

There are many materials available for window hardware. Hardware can serve two important purposes: energy efficiency and interior design. In terms of design, you will be guided by your personal taste. The climate of your area may determine what kind of energy efficiency you will need to be concerned with. Wood is the most common type of window hardware and is has been in use for many years. It is easy to work with, both for professionals and amateurs. It is the material of choice if a project involves any kind of intricate carving or detail. It is almost always used in custom designed windows. You can paint or stain window hardware to almost any finish you want that will complement your home décor. Wood is also an excellent material for energy efficiency. However, wood does require maintenance over time. If you do not re-stain or re-paint your wood finishes periodically, the finish will start to peel. This not only looks awful, but the exposed wood will start to rot. However, if you keep up the maintenance by painting or staining regularly, wood lasts a very long time.

Steel window hardware is used on windows, but most often for basement windows. Sometimes you may find it in older homes; newer homes, with their energy efficiency requirements would not do well with steel. Both heat and cold can leak through steel window frames. It is a very strong material and so it is usually the choice for hurricane shutters. Steel also needs the regular maintenance of painting, or it will rust and eventually corrode. Aluminum window frames have the strength and durability of steel, but they do not have the maintenance requirements of steel window frames. The colors of aluminim frames are baked on, and so do not have to be repainted constantly. But it is an energy “leaker” just like steel is and will allow the heat from a home to escape. Vinyl has become the window hardware of choice lately. Vinyl is energy efficient and Vinyl window frames are just about maintenance free; they don’t need to be painted and a quick swipe with cleanser on a cloth will keep them looking like new. The color is put in the manufacturing process, so it will never peel or scratch and there is a wide variety of colors it is available in. Fiberglass is a material that is just recently being used as window frame material.

It has the properties of durability and energy efficiency since there is little to no heat loss if it is insulated properly. However, this perfect combination of factors does not come without a price: fiberglass is the most expensive material for window frames. If you are in a climate where it is extremely hot, you will want to choose a window frame material with a low “U” factor. This will keep the cool air in and the hot air out.

In a cold climate, you want to keep the heat in and cold out and you should choose a window frame that will do this. If you use energy efficient material and a lot of insulation, you should be able to do this. Insulated glass will add to the energy efficiency. They have two layers of glass with a gas between the layers that acts as an insulator. If you have to replace windows in a cold climate, you should think about this.

Another thing to consider when replacing windows is the architectural design of the house. Old fashioned wood windows would not completely modern contemporary designed home.

Being particularly interested in home security and locks, Jerry Blackburn has been publishing various summaries in the area. Writing for publications on locks and window hardware the columnist improved his depth of understanding in the field.

Window Treatment Basics

Published by under Windows

With so many different window treatment options available, it’s easy to become confused. But different treatments excel at different aspects of functionality. Knowing which window treatment is right for your needs can save time, money and frustration.

There are three major functions that window treatments can perform. They are privacy, light control, and decor. Very few will perform well in all three areas, so it’s important to priorities which functions are most important to you.

Privacy protection

Privacy is obviously important, especially for windows in the front of your home that probably face a street or other public throughway’s. Windows facing more private areas of a fenced yard, on the other hand might not need to provide much in the way of privacy.

Several window treatment designs can provide privacy. Blinds or thick curtains most notably, but privacy can also be attained with use of window frostings or diffusers. These will however obstruct your view of the great outdoors.

Light control

Sunlight and glare needs to be controlled in the bedroom if sleeping comfort is interrupted by light entering through the windows. In a room where sunlight will interfere with TV watching or computer use needs window treatments that are effective in light control too.

Any room with items that can be damaged by the suns UV rays need window treatments that are good at controlling light. Any kind of artwork, antiques, or photographs can benefit from this protection. Even carpeting and hardwood flooring can be damaged by the suns UV rays. Consider this when deciding on a window treatment type for any particular window.

Window tinting can be very effective at blocking UV rays. Other than that, window treatments that open and close easily are preferred – blinds, curtains etc. excel here.

Complementing the rooms decor

The decor of window treatments in any given room is more important to some of us than to others. If decor is not an issue for you, then some simple window blinds are inexpensive and effective at the other two criteria.

If decor is more important to you, then you can have your work cut out for you depending on taste. Curtains are available in almost any pattern and color of material. A little sewing experience can make a DIY curtain project a breeze, or perhaps you know someone who is willing to sew curtains to your specifications, using our preferred material.

Window treatments aren’t just for decoration, light control, or privacy, but some level of all three. Depending on what is important to you for any given window in a room, you can now easily decide which type is best for you.
