Internal vs External Doors

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Doors

When you are considering doors, you realize that they are either passageways from one room to another or from the building to the outside. These are internal vs. external doors.

Many people view a door as a door and do not see much difference between internal vs. external doors. In the case of door construction, this basic function difference is all important. The external door is more than just a passageway from one place to another. It is a barrier to intrusion and against the elements. The internal door does little more than provide privacy.

This functional difference dictates the material and construction method of the doors. An external door needs to be made of a sturdy and solid material that can resist the exposure to the outside and also is not easily broken down to provide security. The materials used in the construction of the external door must address all of these concerns and like external windows must all consider insulation and sealing as well.

The external door must not only be of heavier construction, but must also be mounted in a more secure manner. It would not provide much security if it could easily be kicked in or knocked off its hinges. So, not only the materials, but also the mounting must be selected with the function of security in mind. Since the internal door is mostly used for privacy purposes, these factors are not as important. Internal doors are usually of hollowed wooden construction and are mounted on simple door frames.

There are some cases, such as in certain commercial buildings, where an internal door will require external door standards. This is because the function of security is important despite the location of the door. Although the terms external and internal door refer to location, they could also refer to function in this case. The external door is sturdy and solid and provides security. The internal door is light and provides only privacy.

External doors can take many forms from the stately double doors of a large home entry way to the sliding glass doors leading from a downstairs room to the back patio. Despite the form that they take, the main functions of protection, insulation, and a barrier to the outside elements should never be forgotten in the selection process. It is in the internal door that imagination and style can be used. The internal door can become a part of the decorative motif of the internal design since privacy is its major function.

Flush cabinet doors are often seen with butterfly hinges. These cabinet hinges consist of two flaps or leaves with screw holes held together by a pin. They are mounted on the outside of the door and frame and look like a butterfly when open; hence the name. A cabinet hinge similar to this is a butt hinge only the flaps are recessed into the door and frame revealing only the pin when closed. Balls or finials can be added to the pin for decoration. The butt hinge can be used on any door.

Pivot cabinet hinges are made for overlay doors. They are mounted on the bottom and top of the door with portions of each hinge bent over and mounted to the frame and the door resulting in a concealed hinge. 8 Ways to Conquer Clutter

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Uncategorized

Life has a funny way of storing itself. We have things in our apartments that we have not used in years. After the birth of our daughter, we realize that we had to make space for her things. Unfortunately, we had clutter in our closets and study area. Getting rid of clutter was not easy but it can be accomplished.

So if you find yourself not being able to find your things, having too many thing you don’t use, not having enough space then these tip will help you conquer clutter.

1.Throw it away

Before I got married, I used to keep a lot of online articles that I did not use for months. After, I got married, my wife convinced me that I would not have use for those articles. If I needed the information ,then I could do research online to find it.

2. Get Storage Containers

Our closets used to be extremely cluttered ,and we never seemed to have enough space;storage containers solved that problem. We used to keep clothes for every season in our closets. When we got storage containers we stored clothes that were not being used for the current season. That gave us the extra space and sanity we needed.

3. Free Stuff is not Always Good

The amount of free stuff we’ve(mostly me) collected at times became a clutter. I have collected mostly magazines, tee shirts, CDs and newspapers. If you will not use you freebie within one week then don’t accept it. When you are finished with it pass it on,if possible, to someone for free.

4. Give it Away

As the old saying goes one person’s trash is another person’s treasure is true. Your clutter may not be trash. However, the fact that, you would not miss it if someone threw it out is proof that you don’t need it. For example, that pair of jeans and shirt that is sitting in our closet that we have not use for more than a year could greatly benefits someone. There a numerous charities and organizations who collect clothes for the needed. We need to give our clutter to those more in need.

5. Sell It

You might not want to give away or trash your expensive clutter. The solution is to sell it. You could sell it online on sites such as CraigsList or eBay. Trying a low tech approach such as having a garage sale could also lot work well.

6. Shred it

Some of us are so afraid of identity thief that we are ,rightfully, reluctant to throw away our person documents. The solution is to get a shredder. I used to have several years of banks statement ,before I got married. After I got married, my wife got tired of the clutter ,and she got a shredder and started shredding those statements. If you have not noticed yet, she can’t stand clutter. If we ever need to get a past statement or transaction log the bank will be able to go into their databases and access history files for our account.

7.Get Professional Help

Some health experts recognize that wanting to live in clutter as a sickness. I remember seeing a episode of Oprah that consisted of clutter addicts. She got them the professional help they needed ,and their lives changed for the better. Some of the guests did not believe they has a problem. They grew attached to their clutter so much that it became a norm to live with it. The lesson we learned for that episode is to get ride of clutter we have to view it a problem.

8. Create and Stick a Schedule

Staying clutter free is an ongoing mission. My wife and I take inventory of our minor clutter such as fliers and newspapers everyday. We evaluate our major clutters such as our clothes closet and bookshelf every three months. You should reflect daily on the clutter and think about how to get rid of it.

It does time to get rid of the clutter but once you have a clutter avoidance plan stick to stick to it.

Also, a plan that is not implemented is clutter.

Let Go Of Clutter.

Hazardous Household Products – Helpful Tips On Proper Disposal

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Uncategorized

With the recent focus on environmental concerns especially global warming, we are constantly reminded of the importance of proper disposal of household material that are hazardous to ourselves and the environment. Disposal of such materials is very difficult. For that reason we need to find alternative ways to continue to make life easier while protecting the environment. Even if it means changing our consumption habits. That is something we need to think about. Though, our government has come up with bio-degradable ways to reduce environmental pollutants. It is still our responsibility as individuals to do our part to achieve a save and clean environment.

Below are things you can do to properly dispose of these materials.

1)Always check labels and follow the instructions stated before disposing materials.

2)Avoid disposing materials in the drain especially if you have a septic tank. However, there are certain materials that can be disposed in the drain for obvious reason. These are cleaning products used in toilet bowls, showers, bathroom and kitchen sinks. As an extra precaution, let the water run for a reasonable amount of time.

3)Dispose small quantities of hazardous liquid by combining it with absorbents such as cat litter or paper towels. Then securely dispose into a plastic bag with extra care. This can be placed with the regular household garbage.

4)Always store materials in a well ventilated area, out of the reach of human and animal contact.

5)Materials that can be recycled must be sent to your local recycling centers. They must be emptied of all traces of remains and air dry.

5)Contact your local environmental protection agency or waste management services for instructions on disposing other hazardous materials like pesticides, herbicides, oil paints, paint removers, motor oil and other fluids, batteries, household appliances and electronics.

Some of us have not realized the serious impact of the chemical reactions that these hazardous material go through. We become complacent and see no harm. As a result we do not make the effort to do our part for the benefit of all of us. We must be responsible as individuals. We should not expect our government to do all the work. So please consider these helpful tips on the proper disposal of hazardous household materials. It is very difficult and somewhat time consuming. But if each of us make an effort to turn our living environment into a clean and safe place. This will naturally have a ripple effect putting this earth in a better shape.

Proper Cleaning Tips for Your Levolor Blinds

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Uncategorized

Blinds are the most used shading device at home. It is very famous for its easy mechanism and easy to clean features. Blinds are composed of thin sheets of metal, wood or vinyl that are put together by string. The sheets or sometimes called as vanes can be opened or closed with a single turn of a rod attached to the upper bar. Blinds can also be pulled up to allow more light to pass through.

Levolor blinds are commonly made up of wood, vinyl and wood. They also have blinds that use cloth instead of any material. This blind uses the roman folding style while the other blinds use the traditional pull-up folding style.

Levolon has individual cleaning suggestions to be done for every blind type. The cleaning suggestion depends on the material used for the blind. Check out for the following for the cleaning tips.

For Premium Hardwood:

• The blinds made up of hard wood can look best when cleaned always by means of wiping it with a dusting mitt, a soft cloth or a brush that is commonly attached to a vacuum cleaner. Blinds can easily accumulate dust especially when windows are often open.

• When cleaning premium hardwood blinds, you do not need to bring them down. You may do the cleaning while the blind is hanging in its place. However, if you cannot fully clean it while it is hanged, you may bring it down to clean it. Just take note that removing the blinds would require a little extra effort.

• When cleaning, tilt the slat a little to clean its top surfaces.

• Never use any liquid cleaner even water. Premium hardwood blinds maybe damaged by using such cleaning agents.

For Natural Shades:

• You can clean natural shades by constantly vacuuming it with a brush. Cloth is major dust accumulator and dust can not be easily removed by stroking a brush in it. Vacuum are best solution for that.

• Use water in cleaning only if necessary. Cleaning agents may lose the color of the shade or even damage it.

• Cellular shades can be cleaned with water. However, the water must be lukewarm and is used with a sponge.

For Aluminum Blinds:

• You can use water in cleaning levolor aluminum blinds. Just make sure that the water is not mixed with concentrated cleaning agents that may cause shrinkage or color damage.

• Like wood blinds, you can also clean it whether hanged or not.

De-Cluttering Your Home

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Furniture

Paper Clutter Is the Worst!
Paper can easily get the best of you and your space. The most important thing is to establish an easy-to-maintain system to manage the paper in your office.

Do you have a spot for those incoming bills? Do you have a place to put the newspapers that you don’t have time to read right away? How many magazine subscriptions do you have? Do you actually read those magazines? It will help tremendously if you designate a specific bin, box or basket for your mail, newspapers and magazines. Just as you have a home that you return to at the end of your day, create a home for your paper.

Don’t pick a box or basket that’s too large. Then you’ll be tempted to save several weeks’ worth of newspaper instead of just a few. Remember, there’s no new news in a week-old newspaper.

Watch Out for Large Furniture
Large bulky furniture really clutters up a room, making it harder to feel organized. That huge desk might seem like a good idea, but consider if you’re getting good use out of it, or if it’s become one more place for you to dump stuff at the end of a workday.  Select mission office furniture that fits the size of your room. Make sure the size of your furniture meets the size of the room.

Try to follow the “less is more” theory here. Having less furniture is an easy way to create more space and less clutter. For example, to reduce your paper clutter trying get a mission file cabinet to organize your bills and archive your important papers.

Combat Closet Clutter
Like many, do you have no space in your closet? I hear this complaint all the time, but remember that it’s not the closet’s fault. Get your closet in order by following these simple tips.

Has it been a long time since you sorted through your things in your closet? Do this before you do anything else. You’ll be shocked at what you have. The key to a successful clear-out is, if it doesn’t fit or you don’t wear it, then get rid of it.

When you go to put away what’s left, group like items together. It’s nice if you use the same kind of hangers. A great place for additional storage is the inside of the closet door. It’s best to store your frequently used items at eye level or below. Save the higher places for long-term storage items. This is called storing smart, and it will help keep your closet super organized.

To keep your closet tidy, before you purchase that new pair of shoes, consider whether you have room for them. A good rule to follow is the “one in, one out” rule: If something new goes into your closet, then make sure something comes out.

Home Theaters: Which Ones Should I Invest In?

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Audio & Video

Going to the theatres is fast becoming out of fashion. Thanks to the advantages offered by latest technologies like DVD and satellite, folks are turning more and more to watching movies at home. Home theatres are fast gaining popularity as a good set offers one great advantage – You can watch your old favorite movies which are still on VHS tapes, something which you really enjoy. Moreover, the sound is a lot better with “surround sound” technology and so are the latest DVD players, which offer nice quality and can copy over VCR. The video display unit, however, plays a significant role in making or spoiling your entire experience. For most of us, the display unit is just a regular television, which produces sub-acceptable to fairly good images depending on the make and model of the unit, which ultimately results in people going for High Definition.

Now let’s analyze what to look for in a good home theatre setup- Quality sound, VCR to DVD players, and possibly a new T.V. set. We shall consider all these as if the money would be spent from our own pocket and that we shall be viewing movies as much as an average family in the U.S. does, which is roughly 20 hours per week.

The Logitech Z-640 6 Speaker Surround Sound System is being offered for a competent price of only $69 U.S. – Amazon.com price. Or if you are looking for decent performance, look at the Sony HT-DDW670 Home Theater in a Box System costing approximately $179 U.S. – Amazon.com price. Both of these will produce respectable sound without burning a hole in your pocket.

Coming down to the player unit, the Panasonic DMR-ES40VS VHS/DVD Recorder is a great deal, with its performance and efficiency, at an approximate Amazon.com pricing of $210 U.S. It comes in two color sets- silver and black and perhaps the best feature of this unit is that it can convert old VHS tapes, which we all have around, to DVD readily.

And now, enter the arena of display units, with HDTV sets which are available in a broad range in pricing and styling from the flat to the curved and from the small to the gigantic 50” Samsung HL-R5067W 50″ HD-Ready DLP TV, costing approximately $1500 U.S.-Amazon.com price, which is hard to turn down. But if you want your images projected across a wall, expect to shell out anywhere ranging from $1100 U.S. to several thousand dollars, and for obvious reasons, they aren’t all that popular yet. So if you own a regular sized counsel that holds the T.V., the books and records, then you might probably be going to look for something in the 32”to 38” range, and these are readily available in the market, ranging in prices from seven or eight hundred all the way up to thousands. Choosing a fairly nice television, the SAMSUNG TX-R3080WH 30″ Wide SlimFit HDTV w/ Built-In HD Tuner, costing approximately eight to nine hundred, is worth mentionable with good picture quality, excellent reputation and all.

How To Shoot Good Digital Video With Your Camcorder

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Audio & Video

Let me tell you from experience how important it is to know how to shoot good digital video with your camcorder before going on that vacation or filming that big event. When I was getting married my sister offered to film the happy day for me with her new camcorder, I agreed as it would save money on the wedding as a videographer could get quite expensive.

Let me tell you how wrong I was, the digital video was dark, shaky and blurred anytime she went into zoom or moved around the room. The sound was off and muffled and it was more of a headache to watch rather than a joy. In a nutshell, I wish I spent money on a good digital video shooting.

I don’t want people to make the same mistake that I did so to spread the word on my learning experience I would like to pass on some great tips on how to shoot good digital video with your Minidv camcorder.

Tip #1 – Do not record while walking or moving about as the digital camcorder cannot stay focused on a moving object. Choose a place to stand and begin by recording a starting point for a few seconds before moving onto the next object. Slowly and carefully pan the camcorder to the next point of focus and hold there for a few more seconds before you stop shooting.

Tip #2 – Avoid excessive zooming of objects, not only does it kill the camcorder battery faster, it can give the viewers a crazy headache. If there were a moment you’d like to catch up close, stand still and take your time while zooming and shooting video, also try to avoid any quick motions, as the image will blur.

Tip #3 – Make sure that the lighting around you is bright enough and do not point the camcorder lens directly facing sunlight, not only can this damage the video camera lens, it will also blacken the images making for an unpleasant movie. If you plan to be indoors, I suggest you invest in a camcorder light attachment that can easily be placed onto the video camera and turned on if needed.

Tip #4 – Last but not least, my favorite camcorder accessory by far has to be a Tripod. You can buy a cheap little mini table tripod for simple videos or you can invest in a larger stand up tripod for longer shooting of video. By using a tripod when recording, you can be assured that your images will not be shaky nor will the movie look amateur.

The Facts About DLP VS Plasma TVs

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Audio & Video

With advancing technology revolutionizing the television viewing field, consumers have more choices than ever before. And as is often the case with electronics, it can be confusing. Terms and acronyms are used in the electronics industry that you just don’t find anywhere else, and if you aren’t careful it can keep you from buying newer technology simply because you don’t understand it well. That can certainly be the case with modern TV monitors. The old analog TV sets of yesteryear did not have to have a very advanced monitor because the TV signal was only so good anyway, So CRT monitors lasted as the screen choice for decades. But now with HDTV moving the entire viewing experience forward in dramatic fashion, better ways of producing the on-screen image is in full production. Two of those competing screen technologies are plasma TVs and DLPs (digital light processing TVs). Both types of screen technologies have been around for a while, although DLPs have only become commonplace in recent years. They use completely different means of displaying a TV picture and so each has it’s own peculiarities, both for good and bad. So you as the consumer need to weigh the differences and determine which will best fit your own needs. Plasma TVs are well-known for their high contrast images and vivid colors, and they are generally cheaper than DLP TVs in the larger screen sizes. They have a wide viewing angle, and would make an excellent choice for many people. The drawbacks include less longevity and faster wear rate at higher altitudes above 6,000 to 7,000 feet, and the fact that they tend to run hot and need internal fans to cool them down that can sometimes be noisy depending on the model that you choose. They also can suffer from screen burn-in when an image is left on the screen for a very long time, producing a faint ghost image even when viewing something else. DLP TVs are are capable of painting the screen with high contrast, color dense images too, although the nod still has to go to plasma TVs in general in this area. They are also easily used as a monitor for almost any digital video source that you have, including your computer. They use a reflective technology to display the screen image and so their picture is very bright and easy to see even in brightly lit rooms. However, they must be viewed at eye level, since the brightness falls off rapidly as you view them from either above or below eye level. The DLP will last almost indefinitely, but the light source must be replaced every 10,000 hours and that will cost over $200 when you do. Actually either will make a fine choice to use with today’s emerging television technologies. Just be aware that each has it’s own drawbacks, so choose the monitor that will fit your own particular needs and uses best. Jim Johnson is a successful author and publisher on consumer related matters. You can find out more about the best dlp tv and dlp vs lcd by visiting our HDTV website.
