How to Find a Great Solar Pool Heating System

Published by under Pools & Spas

If you want to find a fantastic solar pool heating system and get all the benefits, then you should look into it carefully before you head out to buy products. Even if you are just buying a solar pool heating panel this is a process that you should take very seriously, so that you can find a quality product at a great price.

When it comes to home comforts nothing can beat your own personal swimming pool, one that you can be proud of and enjoy with your famiy. It will also add value to your property. Not only is it a lot of fun and a natural way to get a tan, but swimming is a great form of exercise that helps to keep you fit and in shape.

Do Your Research Properly

There are many ways to use solar power, and you may be astounded at the number of different products available for pool heating. There are some very important factors that you must decide upon before anything else. Keep in mind your target of finding the right solar heating system for your pool, with this in mind don’t be overwhelmed and use the following points to help you choose.

  • Heater Size – This will depend on the size of you pool, certainly if your pool is large then you will need a system that will provide it with enough energy to heat it sufficiently. If it is a small pool then you will be better off spending less money on a smaller system that will heat it without much excess.
  • Stye – You can choose to style you pool and heating system to your taste. This might involve you choosing the products that fit in with the style of your pool.
  • Maximum Temperature – How hot you want your pool will be important when decding on the equipment that you will use.

So make sure you have are fairly clear on what you want before you start hunting for and spending any money on the perfect setup or kit.  Keep these points in mind at all times, and use these considerations as a starting point when choosing equipment and/or set-up.

There Are Lots of Benefits

The main benefits of having a solar powered pool heating system:

  • Zero Cost – The initial cost of setting up your system is easily offset within a couple of months, leaving you to enjoy your swimming pool with free heating.
  • Good for the environment – Using solar power is the cleanest form of energy consumption. Conventional forms of energy generated from fossil fuels emitt harmful greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which cause climate change and minor (and some major) health issues. Using solar energy does not contribute to this, it is in a sense the purest form of energy because virtually all energy on Earth is derived from the input of the Sun.
  • Low maintenance requirements – Your solar setup should require very little maintenance, and when it does come the time it is very easy to accomplish.

There are many more benefits such as the privalege of being able to go for a dip whenever you want. Any one with a personal swimming pool should seriously consider installing their own solar heating system to reap the benefits on offer.

Keep You Pool Clean

Published by under Pools & Spas

The right maintenance for your pool begins with an understanding of what it takes to keep your pool clean. With most pools, you can add in self maintaining options for the water, which allows you to keep the debris and dirt out of the pool. However, there are certain elements that may get into your pool that is unable to go through the filters, pumps or other self maintenance additions. Making sure you compliment pool maintenance with chemicals helps to maintain the water, providing for completely clean swimming.

The basic idea behind any chemical that you use in your pool is to sterilize the water and to get rid of the specific problems that may collect in water, such as bacteria, algae and micro debris. Even if you have a continuous suction system, this is essential for the overall health of the water as suction systems and pumps sometimes are unable to detect and pull out the smaller substances in your water. Adding this in on a weekly basis will instantly assist with taking out the difficult spots in the water and ensures that you don’t collect elements from swimming that you don’t want to.

The main chemical that you want to use in any fresh water pool is chlorine. This is known to sterilize the water and immediately causes debris and other elements to be removed from the pool. Putting this into the pool once a week and letting it sit in the water for fifteen minutes before you use the area allows you to get even more out of clean water. This chemical is designed to remove bacteria, sterilize the water you are in and remove algae that may be building up in your pool and can’t be removed through other means.

The second chemical to consider for your pool is alkaline powder. This is used to balance out the chlorine that you are placing in the water. Once you place chlorine in your water, it changes the pH level that is in the water. When this occurs, the cement, metal and basic foundation of the pool is exposed to a higher acidic level in the pool. This causes erosion to occur and makes it so your pool foundation may not last as long and the pool water will not stay clean from the erosion. Adding in a small amount of the alkaline powder allows you to get the best results from the balance in your pool.

With these two main components, are extras you can consider to further balance out your pool. There are tablets that are available that have a compound balance of minerals that help pool water to stay clear, clean and balanced. Algaecides, oxidizers and sanitizers are often included in these chemicals. This is combined with soda ash, sodium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate used to balance out the water pH from chlorine and the outside elements. Finding specific tablets that have a mixture of these ensures complete cleaning and balance of your water and allows you to keep even the smallest bacteria out of your water.

If you are interested in finding the best in balance for your water, then relying on more then one source for cleaning is essential. Looking into the chemicals that provide you with a complete cleaning of the hard to see substances and combining this with a balance in water pH helps to keep your pool healthy and clean without the main problems that may dive into your water.

Filtering Out the Water – Basics of Swimming Pool Filters

Published by under Pools & Spas

Finding the right way to keep your pool clean begins with getting into the automated systems and ideals that fit best with your pool. There are several options that are available to get the debris and dirt out of your swimming pool on a continuous basis. Finding one that works effectively is the beginning to enjoying even more of the waters that you are in. One of the most common options for keeping your water clean is through the use of swimming pool filters.

Filters work more efficiently then almost any other type of cleaning system because of the design they carry. They are able to pull the debris and dirt outside of the water, which filters out the bad water, without taking the good water that is in the pool. This is combined with a second system that is able to keep the water level at a certain height by adding in new water. This basic concept is one of the simplest ways to keep the swimming pool clean without having to worry about putting extra systems inside the pool.

If you are considering the option of swimming pool filters, then you want to begin with looking into the possibilities for building what you need at the beginning of construction. One of the simplest possibilities for adding in filters is to have them built in with the initial pouring with the cement foundation. When doing this, a space can be left to insert the filters into the main system, making it easier to add this into the main plumbing system you are using. Typically, planning this out helps to create an efficient option for building the pool that is needed.

When considering this option, you can also look at different approaches that are a part of the swimming pool filters. For instance, if you know there will be specific types of debris, then you can specify this through the filters being added into the construction of the pool. Typically, filters are able to pull out the right type of debris through a grid that is placed in the filter. The grid is measured by a certain number of centimeters that siphon out specific components while leaving others. Making sure you have a variety of filters, as well as ways to add in alternatives, is a simplistic way to add even more to your filtering system.

Another option to consider with the different types of filters is how they function to remove the debris. For instance, certain types of cleaners will backwash the filter by rinsing out the clean water and dumping out the debris that moves through the filter. This helps to process what is needed for cleaner water. Other filters work as a cartridge system by putting a low amount of pressure on to pull in the dirt and debris. Other types work with the grids that filter through specific doorways to let the dirt move outside the system.

With whatever type of system you choose for your swimming pool, you can be sure to get only the best by defining what works and how it is used within your pool. Knowing what is available, how it works and what is needed from the very beginning ensures that you are able to only get the cleanest look with your pool, while maintaining the systems needed in a specific way. The result is the ability to create a better system for maintaining your pool.

Plumbing Pipes And Practical Know How

Published by under Plumbing

Most people panic when there is a plumbing emergency or general repair that needs to be done. This panic is unnecessary if you have the practical plumbing knowledge. Getting help can be obtained in various ways it can be a phone call to a plumber for a fee or help from a do it yourself book if you are the handyman type or if your lucky you will have a friendly neighborhood plumbing/hardware store that can assist you with all your repair needs.

Water Leaks 101

If at any point in time you notice water in areas that water does not belong the first and most important thing to do is turn off the main valve. This is located at meter or in your home where the water line comes into the house. If you do not know where this is start by looking in your crawl space or basement. Once water has been shut off locate cause of leak determine diameter of pipe and material the pipe is made of ie copper or plastic or steel. You can remove a part of this to take with you if need be. Match up pipe or fittings needed to repair leak. If it is a threaded steel connection make sure you put thread seal on all threaded connections and tighten as snug as you can get it. This would be done by using pipe wrench or channel lock style pliers. If it is a copper connection you can use solder fittings or compression style fittings ( the easiest style for a novice). There are 3 types of plastic pipes used PVC, CPVC, and PEX. PVC and CPVC can be glued together with appropriate solvent. PEX pipe is either clamped or a grabber style fitting is used.

Clogged or Slow Drains

If drain is moving slow or completely clogged cleaners are not always a great solution. If the drain is slow moving a cleaner may help to make move freely. If it is completely stopped up a snake should be used to remove obstruction. If your home has old steal drain lines you might be fighting a loosing battle. I suggest to cut out and remove steel pipe and replace with PVC. Generally, the vertical pipes do not build up the same amount of debris or sludge the same as the horizontal pipes. If you are making a transition from steel to plastic make sure you use a approved coupling to make the transition. If it is a PVC to PVC connection use appropriate solvent.

That Leaky faucet

When your faucet develops a leak it is important to fix as soon as possible to save extra damage to the part from forcing it to shut off. First thing to do is to shut water off to faucet . Shut off valves are located below sink. Remove handle then locate the nut that holds the faucet stem in faucet body, use wrench to remove take to local plumbing shop or hardware store to match replacement gaskets or sometimes the complete stem. If faucet is not able to be repaired and you decide to replace it is important that you purchase a new faucet from a reputable manufacturer.

Toilet Woes

If toilet is leaking at the base it could be a wax seal needs to be replaced, or the mounting flange may be cracked. If it takes a long time for the tank to refill after you flush it is the ball cock that has failed. Sometimes this can be repaired with a replacement gasket if parts are not available replace complete ball cock. This is also the solution if it will not shut off. If you hear your toilet refill without flushing it the flapper assembly needs to be replaced.* there are lots of different style flappers used make sure you take your old one with you to match.*

How To Unclog A Toilet

Published by under Plumbing

In my 17 years of plumbing in Edmonton, I have unclogged 100′s of toilets. Which since I don’t normally do drain cleaning this is quite a few. And not just your standard clogs either! In those years I have pulled out many things from peoples toilets. Toothbrushes, diapers, hand towels, pens/pencils, false teeth, woman’s toiletries, cleaning scrubbers, and of course your normal clogs.

The first thing I do when going to someone’s home with a clogged toilet is ask questions. Do you have any young kids? Could they have thrown a small toy down the toilet? Is this a normal clog? Has anyone dropped anything into the toilet and tried to flush it down instead of pulling it out? It is best for you to answer me now, then for me to waste a half a day and then find out what I should do. After all the truth saves them money. Of course, you are doing this yourself so you do not have to ask yourself these questions, but ask those in your family if need be.

After getting the answers I will either use a plunger or a toilet auger, sometimes called a snake. Standard clogs I plunge, everything else I auger.

Plunging To Unclog a Toilet

I prefer a bell shaped or accordion style plunger. These will give you a lot more power. If there is not much water in the toilet then add a little by pushing down on the lever slightly. Careful not to over do it, or the toilet will flush and you will end up with water on your floor. Lift the tank lid off to be prepared to push the flapper back down in case this does happen. Now put in the plunger and plunge hard 5-10 times. Add more water and continue until you hear the water flow easily. Now flush the toilet, but be ready with the flapper in case you did not break through the clog. Now test the toilet. See ‘Testing the toilet’ below.

How to Unclog a Toilet with a Toilet Auger

You can buy an toilet auger at most hardware stores. Go with the more expensive one, remember it will pay for itself the very first time you use it.

Pull out the auger’s handle, this brings the snake part into the shaft to be able to guide the head into the toilet opening. Push the head of the snake in as far as you can, if you do not go in far enough you will scratch your toilet bowl. Now turn the handle clockwise and push down at the same time. When pulling out the snake I just lift the handle part up as far as I can. If the snake get stuck you may have to give it a turn while pulling out. Normally though it is best to try and pull the auger out without turning. Sometimes if there is a per or a toothbrush in the toilet the snake will grab onto it.

Testing the Toilet

After unclogging a toilet I always test to see if there is something in the toilet. Sometimes if something is stuck in the toilet and you plunge or snake it, you clear the drain. You flush it and everything works fine, but that is just with water. If a toothbrush is stuck down there the next time you put toilet paper in you will clog the toilet instantly. So, make sure to use this test!

I take about 8 feet of toilet paper, roll it into a ball, throw it in and flush. I then flush again, often this is when the water will begin to back up, not on the first flush. If it did flush I do the test again , this time with two balls of toilet paper about 8 feet long each.

If this works you are done, and you just saved yourself $150-$200.

If this does not work check http://www.edmontons-business-directory.com/Articles.html for a third way to unclog a toilet that is not easy, but you may want to take a look. Kelly P Kramer is a plumber in Edmonton with 17 years experience.

Features of a Water Purifier

Published by under Plumbing

Water from any natural source is usually heavily contaminated. Wells, rivers, or reservoirs-drinking water directly, without filtering it in a water purifier, can cause many ailments. Even tap water, which is said to be treated before reaching you, is found to have many contaminants. Hence it becomes imperative that you use a trusted and reputed water purifier to purify the water you consume.

Water purifiers in India, come in an array of types and brands, each one claiming to be the best. Before you settle for a water purifier though, it is essential to understand what kind of filtering systems they provide and also how effective each is. Only then can you make an informed decision before buying.

Water purifiers are generally classified into five basic types.

Distillation Type – These water purifier distill water i.e. water is allowed to boil and vapors are collected to give you pure drinking water. This process successfully removes contaminants, sediments and microorganisms. The disadvantage of such water filters is that it is very slow and gives approximately only one liter to every ten liters filtered. Also, the distillation process doesn’t allow oxygen to pass through, thereby reducing the quality of water.

Activated Carbon Type – These types of water filters use carbon particles to filter water. The contaminants and sediments in water stick to carbon surfaces, and you get clean water. It also effectively removes any odor that may be present. The disadvantage of this filter is that it cannot kill the microorganisms present in the water.

Backwash type – Water is passed through a purifying medium, which traps sediments, residue and contaminants. Many types of purifying cartridges are available in the market. The downside of this type is again, that it doesn’t kill harmful microorganisms.

Reverse Osmosis purifiers – RO as it is called, was initially developed to desalinate seawater. Water is passed through a semi permeable membrane so that only single molecules can pass through. This process effectively removes contaminants in water, although small microorganisms may escape through.

Ultra Violet filter – UV filters produce ultra violet radiation, more intense than the sun, to kills microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, algae, molds and oocysts, present in the water. These filters are most effective only when water passing through the UV filtration is free of contamination. Sediments or contaminants present in water can cause shadows and hence prevent the UV rays from reaching the microorganisms.

As you can see, no one type of filtration is enough to make water completely safe for drinking. The ideal combination would be RO and UV water purification process. And that is precisely what Kent water purifiers offer you. RO filtration stage ensures that that there are no impurities such as sediments, heavy metals, salts or other contaminants. This water is then passed through the UV filter to kill any microorganisms that may be present. And what you get is pure, clean and safe drinking water.

If you are considering buying an effective water purifier, why not consider Kent? Only Kent water purifier in India uses the revolutionary RO technology with UV filtration to give you

Painting Your Space – Choose The Right Color

Published by under Painting

It’s been talked about over and over how colors can influence the way we feel and act. Because of this many people try to choose a room color that will have a positive effect (in their opinion) on the people dwelling inside. Often times this just leads to frustration and ultimately can ruin an otherwise fun DIY project.

Let’s face it, painting your home’s interior can be a fun and easy way to transform the look of your home. Why complicate it? When choosing a color you shouldn’t necessarily worry too much about whether Red means “Passion” or Green equals “Nature & Outdoors”… you’re not doing a science experiment, you’re repainting your interior!

The most important thing to consider is the rest of your home, style and decor. No matter what “mood” you think those colors are going to create they’ll look pretty nasty if they clash with the rest of your decor. Conversely if your color scheme compliments your decor and personal style, it will always look great and feel great; no matter what “mood” is associated with that color.

Color selection should be more about creating harmony and uniformity to enforce your style. Keeping your pallets simple is the best advice I can give you. Many people try to create complicated pallets and mix too many colors… it usually turns out to be a disaster!

If you feel like mixing it up a little, try using different tones of the same color. By mixing in slightly darker or lighter tones of the same color you can create interesting looks of texture and shadow without drawing too much attention to those details. Remember, it’s the details that make the difference.

One good rule of thumb is to keep it light. It’s easier to add a darker coat of paint later if you really want to darken the room up. Oftentimes people misjudge the intensity of colors and are overwhelmed by what they get when an entire wall (or room) are painted. By concentrating on light colors with darker tones as details you will have a greater chance of successfully creating the look you’re after.

Another important tip is to take your color chips home with you and view them in clear Daylight as well as under Artificial lights. A color can look very different depending on the time of day! Make sure it’s really what you want before committing a large amount of time and money to the project.

Most of all remember that this should be a fun project and even if you mess up, it’s only paint! You can always try again!

Different Color Designs

Published by under Painting

There is really no single source I could refer you to regarding decorating these room accents, but quite often Traditional Home Magazine will feature homes with dormers, particularly in their spring editions. While that doesn’t help you now, let’s talk about some basic things. Since you have dormers and traditional windows in the same room, you are right in saying the treatment needs to match.

But by “matching” we can “coordinate” which gives us a lot more latitude. If your regular windows are draped or curtained, consider using the same fabric and creating a faux window seat, a covered chain that suspends a crystal or other art object, or a tiny but oh so tailored valence for the dormer top.

As long as the fabric coordinates from one side of the room to the other, you’ll be fine. If you purchase ready-made window treatments, buy one extra and use that to create your own dormer treatment. My one clue here is to use your imagination. Kirsch makes rods in an array of sizes, from 4 inches up. Give some thought to the possibilities, and enjoy the journey!

If you like Traditional styling, invest in a subscription to Traditional Home magazine. You’ll find award winning designs, great tips and beautiful photography. There’s no “one” decor book I could recommend but several good ones. Look for books by designers you know.

You do not have to have the same finish on fixtures. As a matter of fact, I would not recommend it. Go for the design and finish you like best. Counter tops and floors do not have to match either. Remember my number one rule is, if you “love it” and put it in your home, you’re going to love the result.

Often, the photos shown in home magazines are neither “real” nor practical. Sometimes they are just promotional photos done by decorators showcasing new paint colors for a particular paint company. They are often done by “designers” that know nothing about color and how it affects people and the function of the rooms.

Designers do custom work, so this scheme was probably for a specific person’s home, with specific taste and personality. Sometimes that doesn’t translate well if you lift the same scheme and plop into a new room. Some of the worst color design I have ever seen has been shown in home magazines.

That said, it doesn’t mean you can’t fall in love with a color scheme in a magazine spread. What it means is that you have to tweak it and be practical. It needs to work in your space. If it dosen’t work for you then go and see what color design dose work for you. You wouldn’t want to get a color design that would just gloom the room for you and your guess.

The other thing all of you must realize: there are “no color formulas.” Notice that when I give color advice I qualify the information with words such as “take a look at”, “check out”, “something like” and go one to describe colors and list many options.

Even when I list specific paint colors, I always give choices. I do this not to confound you and make it harder, but to help you realize every room and situation is different and that you must ultimately make your own color choices. You can always go with paint samples and try out the sample in the room you think it would go nice in and work from there.

Black, white and red are a classic color combination. Very nice in certain instances but possibly not practical in a huge room. I’ve never seen it done well, even with a 4th color such as sky blue added. Please consider tweaking this scheme and also consider picking the paint chips out in person at the home in question. The lighting will be different and the room size, everything.

And also consider a different paint brand! There are many wonderful brands in Europe that are excellent. Each romm is different, just like each person is different. Some room need a light color to make the room more homy then other rooms need to be a little darker.

So, for a white, black, red, sky blue scheme, the white is the most crucial. A stark white on a wall with a 15ft ceiling will likely be cold and overwhelming unless you know what you are doing. Every shade you mention can be tweaked and made to work with the light in your space to give a similar effect as the design you saw, but you’ll need to do it in person.

If you need help with this scheme, I really recommend hiring a trained color consultant. Be sure when you do hire someone that you ask them to see some of there work so you know what the work looks like. Then you can decide if you want to hire them or not.

Why Color is Important When Looking At Decorating Styles

Published by under Painting

Color is perhaps the most important thing which you need to look at when it comes to decorating. No matter what style you choose for your home, it is going to need a fresh look to the walls and choosing the right color is essential.

These days there are so many different colors to choose from so just how do you know which one is right for your room?

Choosing the Right Color Scheme

In order to choose the right color scheme for your room you need to spend some time knowing what look you want to achieve. Look at the colors already around the home. Are you planning on changing the whole house or just that one room?

If you are just changing one room then you need to make sure that the color you choose not only suits that room, but the color scheme of the whole house. For example, you do not want to opt for a vibrant purple color when the rest of the house is decorated in white. It would look simply odd and the room would not flow at all with the rest of the house. So, always take care of the color that you choose and do not be too hasty just because you like it.

If you want to create a warm looking room it does not mean that you have to use a vibrant red color. It is more than possible to use a cream color and create the warmth with the smaller pieces of furniture and decorations. You could have warm colored curtains such as a deep red. It would not contrast with the walls if it was the right color. A deep red can look different in many different places so look around to find the right color for you.

The furniture should match the color of your walls or if it doesn’t match it should compliment it. You can get ideas from magazines as to what looks better with what and that will help you when you do actually look into adding a little color to the room. You can also find ideas on the internet and maybe ever from friends and family. Though the room should be personal to you and so it needs to reflect your personality not anybody else’s.

You need to decide what you want the focus to be within the room. Usually the walls are not really the focus but if you choose a vibrant color with natural colored furniture then they will be. So, think carefully before choosing any color and ensure that it compliments the main focus in the room. For example in the bedroom you may want the bed itself to be the main focus. If that is the case it should be decorated with perhaps neutral shades and a throw over the end would go really well. Meanwhile the walls would also be a soft color perhaps a nice cream color.

Overall you need to do your research and look through plenty of magazines to see what goes and what doesn’t. Only then will you have an idea of what color to do the walls so that it makes the whole room look inviting and personal.

Landscaping with Rocks

Published by under Landscaping

Have you ever considered landscaping with rocks? Not only does this add some texture to your garden, but it is also very attractive and doesn’t have to cost the earth. The beauty of using rocks is that you don’t necessarily have to spend a lot on materials, as you might already find you have a wide variety of rocks on your land to begin with.

My wife and I decided to go for landscaping with rocks because we were constantly turning up stones in our garden. The stones came in all manner of shapes and sizes which made it easy to create deep and meaningful displays in simple arrangements.

The first idea we had was to knock up a circle of stones around the four small trees towards the right hand corner or our back yard. Landscaping with rocks around each of the trees really helped to define the space. Each tree had its own little collection of stones circling it, a bit over two feet in diameter.

After that success, we decided to use the flat rocks we kept finding to make a walkway. We found this to be quite different from the tree design, because of the sheer time and effort that was required to uncover the stones and arrange them suitably, particularly because of the bad weather we were experiencing at the time.

Next, We laid a sheet of plastic over the grass and weeds growing by the trees and used the stones we had already laid to weigh it in place. We then put some red mulch over the plastic which gave us a nice, professional look. This high priced look came at very low cost, with the only expenditure being that on the mulch and the plastic sheet.

My wife came up with the idea of digging a small ditch to hammer a spike into numerous parts of the clay earth. This went some way to help the land absorb more water, which was proving to be a problem. We then filled the ditches with gravel and sand, before arranging some stones over the top.

After a great deal of sweat and perseverance, the walkway was completed. This time-consuming task was well worth it in the end and turned out to be quite cheap, apart from the hours of work we put in!

On the whole, landscaping with rocks already in your garden is a cheap way to spruce up your garden and give it a modern feel. The colors and textures of the stones are beautiful and contrasting, and we frequently receive comments from our guests about how nice the garden is looking. We are so happy with our garden now, and especially satisfied that we achieved our goal cheaply and relatively painlessly with resources already on our land.

So why no give it a go yourself. If you’re creative, there are so many things you can achieve when landscaping with rocks. It’ll save you money, and you’ll by happy in yourself, knowing that you’ve really accomplished something that looks so professional off your own back.
