Laminate Flooring Installation

Published by under Flooring

Laminate flooring is a growing part of the flooring market. Its multiple purposes, durability, quality finish and its economical cost has made in the most popular choice for flooring among do-it-yourselfers and contractors as an excellent option for attractive and inexpensive new flooring. Today, laminate flooring comes in many different types of finishes resembling natural wood or stained hardwood floors.

Is It Always The Right Choice?

While laminate is an excellent choice for flooring in your home, there are still a few things to keep in mind before you decide on it. A laminate floor is durable, very resistant to damage and scratches as well as easy and inexpensive to install but there are a few minor things you should know before you start removing your old floor and installing laminate. First to give you an idea of the durability and almost destruction proof quality of laminate flooring, think of it like this. It is essentially made of the same material used on kitchen counter tops that survive daily use and able to be cleaned with a simple wipe. Laminate flooring is installed as a floating floor and while most people find it easy to walk on because of its ‘give’ factor, some may find it to sound a bit hollow. Like real wood, laminate flooring can still be scratched and dented although not as easily as real wood.

Too much moisture will also damage your laminate floors as would too much moisture on your real wood floors. To accommodate shrinkage and expansion in laminate floors, installation for laminate is the same as hardwood. Your need to consider the width of the baseboard used in order not too have any spaces on the floor. The larger the area, the wider the baseboard needed as larger areas will expand and contract more than smaller areas. A good rule of thumb when considering laminate for your home is to keep the humidity level in your home between 40% and 50% so the floor doesn’t expand and contract much.

Proper Installation Of Laminate?

Laminate can be installed over existing ceramic tiles, vinyl or hardwood. Although laminate flooring has been marketed as the ultimate do-it-yourself project requiring minimal expertise, like all things it is not entirely a no-brainer. In order to get the job done properly and have the floor be long lasting and problem free essentially, some things need to be considered before installing the floor. First of all, laminate is based on the “click” system, but for the click system to work the floor upon which the laminate will be installed must generally be level overall or the click system will fail over time. Hiring an expert flooring installer may be worthwhile in the long term to avoid any such problems. In certain installations, a vapor barrier is required or a premium foam underlayment can be purchased. while proper measurement and cutting equates to minimal waste and lower costs. Proper tools and planning are also required to map out floor vents and how much to leave for undercut door jams.

“You Get What You Pay For”

Like most things in life, “you get what you pay for”. Generally, the cheaper the laminate floor, the cheaper the product itself and the cheaper the locking system is. As a result, a cheaper laminate may not withstand the wear and tear of everyday traffic. With laminate, not only is it better to buy domestic product but follow up with warranties and manufacturers is easier too. This is not always the case with imported, inferior foreign laminate flooring.

Your Guide To Vinyl Flooring

Published by under Flooring

How do you choose vinyl flooring? Learn about this type of flooring and what it is made of and more.

Vinyl flooring is the most common type of resilient flooring and by far the most popular flooring material in the U.S. Often, resilient flooring and vinyl flooring are two interchangeable terms.

Vinyl flooring comes in both low end and high-end types. Low-end vinyl flooring is often recommended if you want to have the least expensive type of flooring material. However, high-end vinyl floors can also compete with expensive flooring like hardwood in both quality and appearance.

What is vinyl flooring made of. Vinyl flooring materials are composed of varying amounts of vinyl. These are either in solid or composite types of vinyl. Solid vinyl is composed of vinyl pieces set in a vinyl base while composite vinyl is made of vinyl pieces embedded in non-vinyl fillers. The more expensive and more durable of these two types of vinyl is solid vinyl. Good quality flooring contains higher amount of vinyl components. Wear layer is the protective topping that is found in all vinyl flooring. This is either in urethane, which is clear and with no wax covering or all in vinyl. The vinyl type is more resistant to stains and scratches. However it can lose its gloss more easily than the urethane protective topping. Glossy floor can get slippery and can be hazardous especially when used in the bathroom. Both types of protective toppings can wear in time and may become dull unless wax is applied regularly.

All vinyl floors have a cushion backing, which comes in variety of thickness. This property is valuable especially when vinyl is installed in the kitchen where there is a higher tendency of dropping breakables. Unfortunately, the thicker the cushion backing is, the easier the floor can suffer from dents. To solve this problem, you can choose textured vinyl surfaces to camouflage the dents.

Vinyl flooring comes in two forms. These are in tile and sheet forms. Most people who do their own installations prefer to use vinyl tiles. These are easier and quicker to install. Most vinyl tiles come with adhesive backing that an installer will have to peel off, position on the floor and stick it on. The surface where the vinyl will be installed should be clean and smooth to provide a good and tight fit. Others have felt backing and glue application is needed on the floor surface for installation. This type however is very difficult to remove if replacement is required. There is also a vinyl-backed type, which only requires gluing on the edges and can be easily removed when replacement is needed. Sheet vinyl on the other hand costs higher than tiles per square foot. This also requires more time and motivation to install. An average do-it yourself homeowner may find installing sheet vinyl a little more difficult.

Finally, it is usually advisable to settle for better quality vinyl flooring that lasts longer than to get the lowest type and suffer from the arduous process of replacing the cheap floor material in just a few years time.

Reasons For Choosing Marble Flooring For Your Home

Published by under Flooring

Certainly if you are looking for something that really provides a statement to your home as well as looking absolutely beautiful then you could do no worse than deciding to have marble flooring installed. In this article we will look closely at what marble flooring is and why it is a suitable choice for most homes.

In fact during the last 10 years many hard stone products such as marble and granite have seen an incredible growth in their sales (around 2,000%). The sales of marble flooring alone have increased by about 400% during the last five years. Certainly homeowner’s how now just begun to discover the advantages that come with having marble flooring as well as countertops, back splashes and fireplace surrounds etc., installed in their homes.

If you were to visit Italy, Spain or many of the other warm countries around the world you will see the abundant use of marble flooring in their homes. Although for many years marble was only quarried in Italy for used in building but today it is now being quarried in Spain, Mexico, China and even Russia. In fact the market for marble flooring in homes in warmer climates is very huge and the quality and finish of this flooring is very high. Because it comes in a varying range of natural patterns and colors all of which have the natural pattern of veins running through it the choice of marble flooring to select from is immense and this is one reason as to why marble flooring never seems to go out of vogue.

As marble flooring is a natural product is has a wide range of stain resistance properties to it although orange juice, nail polish remover, shampoo and even water could actually cause serious stains to certain types of marble. Therefore it is important that any marble flooring you do have installed is cleaned and resealed professionally every 9 to 18 months in order that it is stays in the best condition possible and so will last for years to come. Normally when a marble floor is first laid it will be treated with a stain resistant sealant and this normally protects it for about 10 years and then after this period it should then be resealed. However it is important that any spills which do occur on the marble flooring are cleaned up straight away and the more acidic the liquid the more likely it is to cause a stain. Yet if the marble flooring does become stained then it can easily be removed by a professional. So other than ensuring that you keep your marble floors clean they need little or no maintenance.

Using Color in Smaller Spaces

Use color even in the smallest of rooms to liven things up Make Connections with Color Many people worry about decorating in small spaces with color. It’s been said (as per urban legend) that color makes small rooms look even smaller. This is barely based on facts, but it’s been blown entirely out of proportion. In fact, color is one of the best ways you can define a room, and anchor it. Here are some ways you can use color wisely in smaller spaces “Join” two rooms by utilizing a single color theme for both. Of course, you’ll probably think of this technique with rooms that are open to each other, such as with a kitchen and family room, but you can also use the same method for rooms that simply fall within each other’s “sight.”

If living rooms have an arched opening through to the dining room, for example, or if the kitchen flows into your dining furniture, your bedroom has a small bathroom attached, and so on, you can “join” these rooms by sharing the same color schemes. Let’s say, for example, that you’ve got a favorite color combination and your house is particularly small. You can use that color combination in every room to some capacity — whether it be hallways, dining area, kitchen, living room, bathrooms  — to give a sort of visual “flow” that continues throughout the house. Use Solid Color to Add Depth You can add depth with solid colors.

For example, changing a bland space that’s all one color (say, white) with elegant oak furniture to one with the depth of layered colors makes things appear bigger. For example, you can paint a living room all blue and then paint the walls and door openings red, which accentuates the space nicely and gives depth. In a kitchen, you can use white cabinets and white refrigerator as accents in a corner, and then add a horizontal line to visually separate walls, which makes a small room look bigger. Layer Colors to Add Depth Layer on glazes of color to give walls depth. You can also separate walls into blocks of color to give them more visual depth. This can be especially useful if you’ve got a large wall to cover. Using just a single color of any type can make the wall look very large and very flat. Using something like patterned wallpaper is simply overpowering for such a large space.

However, you can layer soft “color tones,” used to complement furnishings, and yet visually recede so that you look at the whole room instead of just the wall itself. Using Accent for Emphasis If you want upholstery and wall colors neutral, you can simply accent with a particular color and then layer it throughout the entire room. For example, if you like red, it might be overpowering on your walls, but you can use it on couch cushions, in wall pictures, or on foot stool coverings. If you use even bright colors sparingly but carefully, the bright colors will provide accents but won’t overwhelm any space. Lastly, you should use the accent color you’ve chosen throughout the room, and not simply concentrate it in one particular area.

Neutral Tones Should Be Varied Even if you like all-white rooms, for example, you can add some variation was neutrals to give it a less sterile look. For example, tone on tone stripe can add visual interest but still maintain a quiet “neutral” effect. That is, it’s quiet like a neutral, but still has a slight change of tone that gives the depth you need without the starkness of a bright, eye-popping element.

The Importance of a Generator During a Power Outage

Published by under Electrical

Power outages can happen unexpectedly for a variety of different reasons. It is always best to be prepared for a blackout, especially if you live in a place that is prone to loosing electricity easily or during a stormy season. One of the best ways to be prepared for a power outage is by purchasing a generator. A generator is a device that converts mechanical energy to electrical energy and can restore just enough electricity to your home to live normally while experiencing an outage.

Energy failures normally occur when there is some sort of inclement weather. Power can be lost if there is lightning and thunder, extremely windy conditions, some sort of snow or ice storm, or a downpour of rain. These types of severe weather can cause electrical lines to fall down, tree limbs to fall of power lines, circuits to overload, and electric equipment to fail. There are also some cases where electrical power can be disrupted because of some sort of repair being done on electrical systems. When these outages take place teams of electrical professionals are usually on the scene of the problem as soon as they are available. The electric companies know how precious electricity is to citizens so they will do their best to restore the power and fix the problem in an efficient and effective manner.

When you own a generator and have it installed it will already be connected to your household electrical system so that it is able to activate itself as soon as the power goes out. Most of the time the generator will have something called a transfer switch that it is connected to that will disconnect the utility power of your home when the generator is being used. The generator is then able to bond with your electrical system to supply electricity to your home during a blackout.

A generator can give power to a great deal of the amenities that you are used to having on a daily basis. The lights and electricity in your home will be powered by the generator, as well as your heat and water. This means that hot water is able to be used for showers, or whatever may be necessary, during a blackout. This machine will also keep your freezer and refrigerator running, ensuring that your food does not go bad and that you will be able to feed your family. Generators can also give you access to your home phone, television, or computer. When using the generator during an outage you will want to make sure that you are using it only for the necessities. Making sure that the electric load that you are placing on the device is not exceeding the rating n the generator is also a good idea.

Generators can keep you and your family safe during a electrical outage, making sure that you have access to a comfortable indoor climate that is safe from the storm. Investing in one of these machines is not only a convenience, but a safety precaution.

What Does a GFI Do? – Electrical Problems

Published by under Electrical

In your bathroom you should have a GFI electrical outlet. Most new homes or newly remodeled homes require you to have GFI electrical outlets in the kitchen. Most older kitchens do not have GFI electrical outlets. GFI stands for ground fault circuit interrupter.

Why not call it a GFCI instead of a GFI electrical outlet? Well it is called a GFCI in some instances. GFI is short and is the most common name used by most electricians and builders for this type of outlet.

GFI ‘s come in 15 amp and 20 amperage outlets. GFI outlets must be wired properly. Make sure you’re using the proper wire size when hooking up the GFI outlet.

How do I know which size wire to use? This all depends on how far away you are running it from the electrical panel. There are charts you can use to figure this out. If you are not running the electrical wire more than 80 feet from the electrical panel you can use 12 gauge electrical wires for a 20 amp GFI. This is a general rule of thumb for most electrical house wiring.

If you’re going to be using a 15 amp GFI and you are going to be less than 80 feet away from the electrical panel you can use 14 gauge electrical wires. Again this is just a general rule of thumb for most electrical house wiring.

A GFI is a light duty electrical plug used in bathrooms, kitchens and the exterior of your house. The sole purpose of the GFI is to shut the breaker off faster if there is any moisture or light load problems.

Let’s say for instance you have your hair dryer plugged into the GFI outlet. The hair dryer somehow falls into the sink while it is on or plugged in. The GFI outlet will instantly shut off because of the sensitivity of the breaker inside of the plug it self.

The GFI plug has a test button and a reset button on it. If you are continually resetting the GFI you will wear it out eventually. I have had GFI plugs after resetting the button about 10 times break and no longer able to use them.

The GFI electrical plug is a great idea and if you don’t have them in your bathroom or outside of your home it would be a great idea to have an electrician install them for you.

Circuit Breakers in Your Home

Published by under Electrical

What do you think of when you hear the saying “blow a fuse?” Do you think of the panel in your house where you replace a little glass bulb with a wire in it? Or do you think of the panel where you flip a switch to restore your electricity? If you think of the switch, then you actually have a circuit breaker in your house. This is a reusable electric switch that cuts off the circuit when the current is too high, preventing your wiring from heating up and potentially causing a fire.

Fuses are an older way of interrupting the flow of current. A fuse is simply a wire that heats up and breaks when the current is too high, disrupting the electricity. To turn it back on, the fuse has to be replaced. Newer houses and electrical installations use circuit breakers instead. All wiring and appliances in a house are on circuits. A circuit is essentially a closed loop of wire, allowing a return path for current to flow on. It consists of a “hot” wire coming from the source of electricity, and a “neutral” wire that connects to the ground. When the circuit is closed, the current can then flow, as it moves from areas of higher concentration to lower.

The current is the rate of flow of the electrical charge. Current is the voltage divided by resistance. Voltage is the force making the charge move and resistance is determined by the size and properties of the wiring and appliances. Voltage and resistance working together will vary the amount of current. Current increases when there is more voltage or less resistance, allowing the charge to flow faster.

When the charge moves to quickly, the wire or appliance the charge is moving through may not be able to handle it. Or, something will cause the hot wire to connect to the neutral wire or something else connected to the ground. A lack of resistance in the circuit will cause the charge to move freely. Either way, increased current will trip the circuit breaker switch.

Many small household circuit breakers consist of an electromagnet or a metallic strip that will cause a terminal in the breaker to move and open the circuit. Under normal conditions, current flows across the breaker from one terminal to the other and out the other end. But as current becomes too high, it will cause an electromagnet to move or a metal strip to bend, opening the circuit and stopping the flow of electricity. An arc of electricity is created in a chamber in the breaker when this happens, but in a household one, air is enough to extinguish it. Larger circuit breakers may use different methods of extinguishing this arc, such as a vacuum chamber, gas, or oil.

All the wiring in a house flows through circuit breakers. They’re found on a panel in the house, usually in the basement or a closet. Some large appliances, like air conditioners or refrigerators, will be on their own circuits and have their own switch. When the circuit breaker is tripped, it will appear in the middle or off position of the switch. To reset it, unplug or turn off all devices and appliances on that circuit. Then make sure that all switches have been moved to the off position. Then simply move everything back to on. It’s then safe to turn your appliances back on. Your electricity is back to normal.

If the circuit trips again with nothing plugged in or turned on, the breaker or electrical wiring may have a fault in it and need to be replaced. If it trips when something is turned on, there may be a short in the appliance or it is placing too much load on the circuit. If resetting the circuit breaker doesn’t restore your electricity, there may be a wiring fault, a defective outlet, or your circuit is on a different type of circuit breaker, such as a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). This is one designed to prevent electrocution and monitors the amount of current. These are often used in locations like the kitchen and bathroom. GFCI outlets have ‘test’ and ‘reset’ buttons on them. To trip the circuit, press the test one. To restore the circuit, simply press reset and the electricity should return to normal.

6 Easy Steps To Choosing The Right Bathtub

Published by under Bathrooms

There are hundreds of different kinds of bathtubs available in the markets today, all of varying styles, which is why selecting the right one for your home is not a very simple task. Not only do you have to pick the right color to match your bathroom and ensure that the design is right, but many more decisions have to be taken. Thus, this article lists all the factors that need to be considered when choosing a bathtub so that you end up buying the ideal one.

1) Functionality: A bathtub is essentially used for bathing, so what functionality are we talking about? Well, although bathtubs are used only for bathing, there are many features that add to the functionality of one. For instance, a whirlpool tub also provides a soothing and relaxing jet massage option in addition to regular bathing. Thus, you need to make sure that you will actually use the jets often and are not simply buying the tub because it has the added features. So, be clear on what your needs are and then pick a bath tub that fulfills them.

2) Tub size: The size of the bathtub is a major purchase criterion. People often assume that if the tub is big enough to fit them comfortably then it is the right size. However, there is such a thing as a too big bathtub. While the tub should definitely not be small for you, there shouldn’t be too much extra space either, which results in water wastage. Another thing to consider is whether you want a one person or two person tub. If you are likely to want to share your bathtub with your partner, go in for the 2 person one. However, if bath time is when you want to be with your thoughts, then choose the regular sized single person bathtubs.

3) Design, shape, and color: The color of a bathtub may not increase its functionality, but is an important consideration as the tub has to match the rest of your bathroom fixtures and accessories. Same goes for the design and style of the bathtub. A bathtub that is of a different style than your sink or toilet may look very out of place. As far as colors go cream and white are the regular options, but different hues of blue, pink, brown, green, and maroon are also available to match your décor. Rectangle, corner tubs, heart shaped, and oval are your choices as far as bathtub shape goes.

4) Material of the bathtub: It is important to look at the construction materials of bathtubs, as their strength, durability, and ease of maintenance depends on that. Different materials used to make bathtubs are – Acrylic, Marble, Porcelain tubs, Wood, Cast iron tubs, and Fiberglass. A fiberglass bath tub is quite an inexpensive buy but is less durable than cast iron or porcelain bath tubs. Cast iron tubs will practically last you for generations but can be very pricey also. As far as looks go, nothing can beat wood and marble bathtubs, but these are extremely difficult to maintain and keep clean. Thus, depending on what your topmost priorities are (durability, strength, looks, cost etc), you should choose a construction material accordingly.

5) Type of bath tub: Bathtubs are mainly of two types – soaking or standard. A standard bathtub is good for regular bathing, but if you want a bathtub for therapeutic purposes as well, you should buy a soaking tub. A soaking tub allows your whole body to be immersed into the hot water filled tub, thereby providing much needed relief to tired and achy muscles. Even high blood pressure and stress can be reduced with a thorough soak. Thus, if you wish to benefit from the therapeutic value of a bathtub, do go in for a soaking tub instead of a standard one.

6) Special Needs: Contrary to what most people believe, even aged people and handicapped persons can enjoy a bathtub. Yes, a regular bathtub may be too dangerous for them, but ADA compliant bathtubs can certainly be used by people with special needs. ADA bathtubs are made in a manner that old and handicapped people can easily enter and exit the tub. Increased protection is provided by grab bars and grab rails so that there is little danger of slipping and falling. Even people who are on wheelchairs can use specially designed ADA tubs.

Thus, you should choose a bathtub only after taking all the above factors into consideration. Your budget will also determine your choice of tub, but there are bathtubs available in all different price ranges so finding one within your budget should not be a problem.

This guide on choosing a bathtub should hopefully make the difference between picking the right one and the wrong one.

Rob Barnes writes for Bathtubs For You, a consumer guide dedicated to choosing, buying and maintaining bath tubs. From major brands like Kohler and Jacuzzi to styles like soaking and clawfoot bathtubs, all things tub-related are reviewed here.

Easy Bathroom Home Improvement Under Twenty Five Dollars

Published by under Bathrooms

Ever want to make some over all decorative changes in your home. Are you tired of looking at the same look day after day, but don’t feel like you have the knack for coming up with a new look. There are some simple things you can do to make a bathroom home improvement. Have you ever gone to some one else’s home and admired something they did and thought, gosh I could do that, or even thought, I could never do that. With just a little bit of desire, you can not only come up with some good ideas, but you can do them yourself as well. This article will show you how easy bathroom home improvement is, and you can do it for less than twenty five dollars.

Since we spend quite a bit of our time in the bathroom, it is important to make that room look not only clean and sanitary, but appealing as well. A bathroom home improvement doesn’t have to require replacing big items such as a new sink, or tub. When we think of a home improvement, we get the picture of remodeling or building, but it can be something very simple like, replacing a mirror on the wall. If it makes the room look better, it is a home improvement. Maybe the mirror in your bathroom is looking old, or you are just tired of it’s size or shape. You can go shopping at any second hand store, or garage sale, and pick up a mirror that you love, for under twenty five dollars. Your bathroom home improvement won’t have cost very much, but the new look will make a huge difference.

Another bathroom home improvement that doesn’t cost much, is to change the color of the room. You can buy paint at discount stores now, and buy it in any color you would like. The truth is, there are so many colors to choose from, you will probably have a hard time deciding which color to choose. Most all places that sell paint, have small color samples that you can take with you, so you can actually place them up on the wall, to kind of see what it will look like. I recommend you doing this too, before you begin this bathroom home improvement. Colors often look different under the store lights than they do in your actual home.

If you don’t second hand shop, you should try it, because it can be a lot of fun. You might find some real treasures for a bathroom home improvement, that won’t cost you much at all. You might want to begin looking for new handles for the cupboards, or you might even find new faucet handles that look new, and would be beautiful in your bathroom. If you shop around, you can find that a bathroom home improvement can be done for less than twenty five dollars because what you are after is a new look. Just replacing your shower curtain, rod, and matching a towel set could be considered a bathroom home improvement. How easy is that.

How To Fix That Leaky Bathtub Faucet – Fast!

Published by under Bathrooms

Fixing a leaky bathtub faucet – or any other leaky faucet for that matter – can be an expensive job – UNLESS you can do it yourself!

In this article we want to look at the most common reason for a leaky faucet and show you how to fix it quickly and cheaply.

Preparation

It almost goes without saying that you should turn the water off first! Where to find the handle that does that? Just look under your sink and see where the pipes run. Somewhere along their length you will see either a handle or a wheel you can use to shut the mains supply off. In nearly every case you will need to turn it clockwise to shut.

One other preparation is to block the sink drain – just to prevent a nasty accident with something loose (like a screw or a small nut) disappearing down the drain never to be seen again. Use the plug you normally use, or put some cloth into the aperture. No good being wise after the event!

And – even though it goes without saying – make sure you have bought a replacement washer (or two) from the local hardware store – you don’t want to be looking for that when you have the faucet in pieces do you!

Action

Locate the screw that is holding the handle of the faucet in place (it may be hidden behind a small plate or cover and that cover needs to be prised off using a small screwdriver or similar). Then undo the screw.

The next job is to get the handles off. Use a screwdriver to do this – you might need to use a little bit of force to prise it but it will come.

Now you will see the old washer (don’t worry if not, we will put one in place anyway). Take off the old washer and replace with the new. Notice that the hole in the washer should just be a touch bigger than the central post that the handle turns.

Now retighten the handle, but only hand tight i.e. only until it stops turning without extra force needing to be applied.

Next, turn on the water again and see what happens! If there’s no leak you’re home and dry (excuse the pun!). If it still leaks, try tightening the handle a little more.

If it still leaks after that- then the problem is elsewhere and you’ll need to get a plumber after all. But al least it was worth a try!

(And by the way – if you notice a big build up of lime around the handle – clean that off with a special removal product from your hardware store – it will pay you in the long run).

Things needed

A screwdriver or two – maybe one flathead and one Phillips or cross-screw. Also two washers (maybe take the old one off ahead of your visit to the store to be sure of getting the right one, or just buy a pack of mixed washers – not an expensive buy).
