First and foremost a chandelier is a light source and you can count on it to bathe your dining are in a very specific sort of light. Lamps and simple ceiling lights are often harsh or murky due to their shades, but with a chandelier, you have glass shades that come in a variety of different thicknesses and that can diffuse your light in a number of different ways. The first thing to think about is where the light will be directed. If you are only interested in one focal point for the room you may want to go with a more traditional chandelier that will just keep the light focused on one area. For more variety, however, there are plenty of chandelier that can be adjusted to provide some variety in where the light is pointed. Some chandeliers will offer the best of both worlds and between their multiple bulbs and the refraction ability the glass, will be able to bathe your dining room in a warm light.

There are thousands of different models of chandeliers and whatever decorating plan you are interested in, you can find one that suits you.

Chandeliers also fit into smaller spaces. Far from being the large glass affairs that you might think they are, many modern chandeliers are wide rather than tall, making them perfect even for a ceiling that isn’t ten feet tall. They won’t impede on your walking area the way a floor lamp will and they’ll add a lovely decorative touch to your dining room.

When a guest wanders into the room, depending on the layout, their eyes are usually drawn up, and a chandelier is a charming thing to have draw conversation to! You don’t have to stick with just clear glass, either; many chandeliers are made with stained glass, giving your dining room a wonderful Art Deco or Art Nouveau style. Either way, you can make a striking statement with both your lighting and your chandelier If you are looking to redo your dining room, don’t be restricted to the chairs and table. 9 Amazing Tips To Transform A Small Space

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Interior Decorating

You don’t have to knock down walls to make a room seem
bigger. Sometimes it takes a little imagination and a
lot of know how to create that spacious space you
crave.

Here are 9 easy ideas that you can do right now to make
your room appear larger.

1. Use light colors on your walls. Light colors on your
walls will give a more open, spacious feeling to your
room. Light colors on your walls will have your walls
recede, where as dark colors will create a “closing in”
feeling.

2. Unify your walls. When painting, paint your
baseboards, chair rails and window trim the same color
as your wall. If you have doors in your room, paint
your doors the same color as well. This will remove all
the visual distractions on your walls, unifying your
walls… and making your room appear larger.

3. Simplify your windows. A small room is not the place
to have fancy, fluffy window treatments. Keep it
simple, with roman shades, or simple lined drapes. Have
the fabric of your window treatments the same color as
your walls. This will unify your walls even more, and
creating a larger space.

4. Avoid area rugs. Keep the floor as clean and open as
possible. This helps to create a spacious feeling to
your room. This concept also works when creating a
spacious feel for multiple rooms. Having your floor all
one material will have your rooms flowing into each
other and creating a larger space.

5. Reduce the clutter. With small spaces, you want to
create as much open space as possible. To do this you
need to clean up the clutter, minimize the amount of
furniture and stay organized.

6. Small furniture and dark colors. Although, you
should use light colors for your walls, the opposite is
true for your furniture. A club chair upholstered in a
light color will appear larger than if you covered it
in a rich chocolate brown. The same is true for your
wood furniture. Lean towards rich dark stains that help
minimize the size of your furniture. The more contrast
with your walls the smaller your furniture will seem
and the larger your room will feel. There is one
exception to this rule. You could also consider
upholstering your furniture in the same fabric as your
window treatments and the same color as your walls…
your upholstered furniture will “disappear” into the
walls.

7. Avoid patterns. Some pattern is nice for interest,
but avoid loud, busy patterns in a small space. Stick
with patterns that read as a solid.

8. Let the light in. If you have windows, create window
treatments that allow the sun to shine in during the
day. Natural light and the appearance of windows can
really open up a space.

9. Use mirrors. Adding a mirror to a wall creates the
illusion of open space. It also reflects light to add
brightness to the room. Have a wall that you’re not
sure what to do with? Add a framed mirror.

Following these simple rules will create an open,
spacious room. You’ll be amazed at how your small room
will transform into a bright, larger room.

Happy Decorating!

Creating a Focal Point in a Room

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Interior Decorating

While some rooms have a natural focal point, other rooms might require you to add something to the room in order to create that focus. Before you do add anything, look closely at the room to see if it has something to offer already. You might already have something like a fireplace in the room that is already a natural focal point and can be easily played up when decorating.

Look for large pieces you already have in the room that might make a good focal point, such as a wood bookshelf, an entertainment center, wood dressers, or even a couch. You may only have to rearrange some furniture to create a focal point if you already have something in the room you can use. Or you might have to start from scratch in choosing the proper focal point for a room.

The Fireplace as a Focal Point
One of the best natural focal points in any room is a fireplace. If you have a fireplace in the room, then there are plenty of ways you can draw attention to it.

By arranging the furniture around the fireplace, you can create an instant focal point, but there are also other avenues you can take. You might create an accent wall by painting the wall the fireplace is on a different color than the rest of the room. You could also change the style of the fireplace or add a new mantle to it in order to draw more attention there. You might also place some great décor items on the mantle or hang a large piece of art over it.

The Couch as a Focal Point
Do you have a favorite couch that would make a great focal point? You can create this with some rearranging of the room. Do make sure the couch is in great condition, though. If not, then you might consider adding a slipcover.

By adding colorful or patterned pillows or a throw to the couch, you can help draw attention to it. Then arrange the rest of the furniture so it is facing the couch. If your couch is large, place it in the middle of the longest wall in the room. You might consider adding side table to the couch as well.

The Armoire or Entertainment Center as a Focal Point
If you want to highlight an entertainment center or armoire in a family or media room, you need to make sure you concentrate on the quality of the product. You’re not going to want a cheap-looking entertainment center, after all, to be the main focus of the room. So be sure to invest in a quality piece of furniture that’s also attractive.

It’s not a bad idea to also look for a furnishing with doors that will hide any electronics. You can also add flower arrangements, candles, and frames to the furnishing for some additional style.

These are just some of the many ways you can create a focal point in a room. After all, you will probably want to show off different pieces in different room. In a bedroom, for instance, most people want their bed to be the focal point. With a little creativity, you’ll be able to show off and highlight your focal point in any room.

How To Successfully Use the Color Orange In Your Interior Decorating

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Interior Decorating

Orange is a very “hot” color that used as a pure color will promote energy in a room… almost too much energy to the point of unsettling. Which is why, if you plan on orange in a color scheme, you need to be smart about how you plan on using it.

You’ve probably rarely seen any room painted in pure orange or have a lot of pure orange decore. Most likely because a room done in pure orange is simply too much, too bright, too hot and not restful. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not telling you to never use pure orange in a color scheme… just have a reason. Perhaps it’s a child’s playroom and you paint a table bright orange. Or perhaps it’s a lamp shade or funky lamp.

To use orange successfully in most rooms, you want to use muted oranges, or shades and tints of orange. These are calmer versions of orange and create a much more restful room.

A Peach Room

When you add white to orange you get a peach. A rich peach to a sublte almost white peach. Using all these colors in this range will create a peaceful, tranquil interior design. It’s also ideal for smaller rooms. Use a light peach on the walls. Add simple drapes with the same tint of peach. Have your chairs and couches in the same fabric as your drapes. And your area rug should have a nice range of soft pale peaches to rich peaches. Your room will be exquisite. Ground the entire soft palette with dark stained furniture… stay away from oak and light pine. Also consider using white as a fabric in your room… white pillows… white vases… white chairs.

Peach to Black

Another alternative is to use a range of dark oranges as your color scheme. Adding black to orange will create browns. From a rich orange-brown to a black-brown. You may refer to this range as your guide for wood stains in your soft peach room. Or perhaps decorate your room in rich orange-browns. Consider painting your walls a peach. Your couch a rich brown from the dark orange range. Have your area rug a mix of soft peaches and rich orange-browns. And maybe your drapes and furniture are an orange with just a hint of black added. Now your room will be cozy and warm.

Add Blue

Add the compliment to the room to cool it down. The compliment to orange is blue. Orange and blue are on the opposite sides of the color wheel. When you add blue to orange you will mute the orange. This will create shades of muted oranges all the way to a greyish brown.

Add white to this palette for soft, less intense peaches… they really are more light beiges and tans.

Add black to the muted oranges to have a range of brown to a dark grey-brown.

You can use these muted tints and shades together to create a rich and dynamic room. A good rule of thumb is to refer to the grid of muted oranges below and use the 3 that are either next to each other, diagonal to each other or vertical to each other.

Do not mix the pure tints and shades with the muted colors. You can mix the pure oranges that have white and black added. And you can mix the muted oranges that have white and black added. But don’t mix the 2 sets together. The result is unsuccessful.

Now you know how to use orange successfully in a monochromatic color scheme for your home decorating.

Using Mirrors in Home Decor

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Interior Decorating

Mirrors provide a special touch in home decor by adding light and creating the illusion of space. A mirror is defined as a reflecting surface that forms an image of an object when light rays coming from that object fall on the surface.

According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the typical mirror is a sheet of glass that is coated on its back with aluminum or silver that produces images by reflection. This type of mirror came into widespread production in Venice during the 16th century.

Here are ten tips for using mirrors in your home decor:

1. Place a mirror on an adjacent wall to an interesting picture or piece of artwork and the mirror will reflect the image and add a sense of space.

2. Hang a decorative mirror near a window in a dark room. This will allow the light to reflect off the mirror creating more natural light in the room.

3. To create the illusion of depth in a room, paint one wall in a dark, contrasting color to the other walls. Then hang a decorative mirror on the dark wall to create a sense of depth in the room.

4. Create a charming entryway by hanging up a framed mirror topped with a floral swag. This will help to create light in the entryway as well as providing a last minute check before heading out the door.

5. Expand a small dining room by placing an ornate mirror on a wall. This will make the room appear larger and brighter.

6. Place a decorative mirror opposite an attractive fireplace and mantel to reflect something interesting in the room.

7. Group and hang several mirrors of assorted sizes and shapes for an attractive wall display.

8. Add mirrors (such as mirror tiles) to the backs of bookcases to add a sense of depth.

9. In the kitchen, add mirror to the countertop’s backsplash. This will reflect light while preparing food and it is easy to maintain.

10. Place a custom sized mirror on the top of a piece of furniture that is damaged or not very attractive. This can be done on dressers, tabletops, coffee tables, and end tables just to name a few.

Always be sure to analyze the placement of mirrors before hanging them up. For example, placing a mirror above a fireplace mantel may reflect the unattractive tops of furniture or blank wall space. You can angle the mirror down so that it reflects something more attractive in the room.

In addition, place mirrors so they will not cause unnecessary glare in a room. Mirrors can be unappealing if they are placed across from a window with a southern or western exposure.

As you can see, there are numerous ways to use mirrors to brighten and enrich your home decor. Decorative mirrors can be found in flea markets, retail stores, home improvement stores, and on the internet in price ranges to fit all budgets.

We Discuss Feng Shui For The Office Desk

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Feng Shui

In today’s era of open concept offices and cubicle farms, introducing some Feng Shui for the Office Desk concepts to the office will keep the energy flowing positively around you, so that your mind will be clear and you will have good fortune in your work. Feng Shui for the Office Desk is the ancient Chinese art of harmony and energy flow and that affects you and your physical environment, so follow these tips and tricks to ensure the energy flows:

- Position the desk so that you have clear sight of the door, with the wall at your back. This allows you to see who enters your office, and gives you the security and protection of the wall.

- Keep the area in front of your desk clear, to allow for freedom of movement of both people and energy.

- Try not to put your desk next to, or directly opposite the door, as these positions disrupt the direct path of the energy flow into the room.

- Do not face the desk directly towards a wall, as it acts as a barrier to the energy.

- If in a cubicle, try to arrange your workspace so that you do not look straight out into a hallway, or a stairwell, storage rooms, closets, elevators, escalators, or toilets.

- Enhance your creativity by placing your computer in the North or West area of your desk.

- Increase your business and/or career success by placing an aquarium or tabletop fountain in the North, East, or Southeast area of your desk.

- Placing a metal safe in either the North or Northwest corner of your office will symbolize the security and prosperity of a business.

- Have a good balance of opposites in your office area: light and dark colors, hard and soft cushions on chairs, etc.

Ensuring your desk has the optimal Feng Shui for the Office Desk flow is difficult for cubicles, as often moving the desk is not an option, but you can still implement many of the same Feng Shui for the Office Desk concepts. Simply substitute the words “desk” each time you see “office”, and you’ll be able to implement feng shui easily at your office desk. Energy, or “chi” is one of the fundamental concepts in feng shui, and being able to increase the chi at your desk is important. More chi means greater prosperity and security for you, ensuring your success and happiness. Place an object in the wrong spot, and the chi is disrupted, and you will need to re-implement Feng Shui for the Office Desk at your office desk.

5 Easy Ways to Accessorize a Room

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Interior Decorating

Do you find that the current look of your home is boring? Are you just looking for something different? There are plenty of simple ways to accessorize any room in your home. You don’t need a lot of money or an interior decorator to give a room an entirely new look. You can easily accessorize any room in your home using any of the following simple suggestions.

Add Some Extra Flair with Throw Pillows
Start by adding some complementary throw pillows to a sofa or chair. Or try adding a throw blanket to the back of the sofa. Just be sure that these items aren’t the exact same color as the sofa or chair, as they should add some interest and design element to the room. A tan sofa should be complemented with decorative pillows where tan is not the main color in the design or pattern. By finding accessories that match other complementary colors in the room, you can really pull the room together.

Update Your Lighting Fixtures
Give your room a whole new glow by updating your lighting fixtures. Installing new lighting in a room can make a big difference, whether you’re replacing older fixtures or small ones. You can find inexpensive, easy-to-install fixtures in a variety of styles. Find a design style to fit the room, but also make sure the light fixture gives off plenty of light to make your room brighter and more welcoming.

Go Green with Your Living Room Accessories
With a simple houseplant or vase of flowers, you can easily add more color to any room. Craft stores carry a wide variety of beautiful fake flower arrangements, or if you are creative enough, you can make one yourself. To really brighten up the room, place the flower arrangement in a prominent spot. If you decide on a houseplant, real or fake, it should also go where it will garner more attention. For instance, if you want to draw more attention to the fireplace, you might try placing a houseplant on both sides of it.

Fill Up a Blank Wall with Framed Pictures
Are your walls boring? Try hanging a few picture frames in various shapes and sizes to spice things up. Whatever your style, you should be able to find an array of picture frames that are unique and stylish, which will not only help you display your favorite images but also add some interest to the room. Black-and-white pictures or those with just a touch of color will provide a dramatic look, as will matted images.

Reorganize Knickknacks with Shelving
Are the knickknacks in your room getting lost in the mix? Try grouping them together on the mantle or displaying them on wood bookcases. They will better accessorize the room if you display them together in a stylish arrangement rather than just letting them get lost in the room.

It’s simple to redecorate or switch around the style design of a room by accessorizing. If you really want to do something totally different, you might look into moving the furniture around. You could also add new pieces of furniture to the mix, such as new oak dining room tables. It should be neither hard nor expensive to accessorize a room. Rather, just get creative and let your style show.

How To Effectively Use Feng Shui In Your Apartment

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Feng Shui

It is sometimes a trying and exhausting effort to implement feng shui in the apartment due to the layouts and the way the apartment itself is positioned. It is quite simple to break it down and divide your apartment up into spaces that are private as well as public. Public shares the spaces with others in the apartment that live there also or you entertain in these areas of your home and it is an imperative puzzle piece when putting feng shui in the apartment.

It then goes without saying that the single most important thing in this circumstance is that you apply feng shui in the apartment and especially in this private area of the bedroom. This will have the most impact on your in this way of speaking when you allow the flow of feng shui in the apartment.

It also goes without saying that the feng shui in the apartment needs to be flowing smoothly and as well as can be expected with the space and areas you are provided. It could be that you have a roommate and don’t have the option to transform the entire apartment into feng shui in the apartment and that is okay.

It is hard to deal with someone else but you can strengthen the energy of feng shui in the apartment by getting some lovely green vegetation such as plants and put them in the living room. Selecting a nice wind chime can also broaden the energy flowing through the apartment by also putting it in the living room or by the front door, wherever feng shui in the apartment dictates.

Most apartment dwellers and renters think that it is impossible to add the energy of putting feng shui in the apartment because they don’t own it and can’t physically make changes however feng shui is not about remodeling. It’s nice to have the flow running in the proper manner but this can’t always be the case and that is why you rearrange certain items and add color.

There is more to adding feng shui to the apartment then tearing down walls; subtle color on the walls maybe by use of a drape or other hangings can improve your wealth for example and requires no painting. For example, in the area of your home that you have the plants and bookcases, maybe adding some pencils and a pad of paper to encourage thoughts could help the feng shui in the apartment.

How to Fix a Warped Door

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Doors

A warp in a door does not develop overnight – it happens gradually, so the sooner you notice, the easier it is to correct. The first real sign may be the door not closing properly, or the lock failing to work.

Doors made from badly seasoned timber are particularly prone to warping, though once you have corrected the warp it is unlikely to return. However, in some instances the warping is caused by outside factors – such as a radiator sited too close to the door, or bad ventilation. If you suspect that this is the case, take steps to deal with the external problems or the warp may recur.

If the warp is not too severe, there are several ways of forcing the door against the twist. Some of these, however, require the door to be kept shut and in many cases this is not convenient.

If you can keep the door shut, wedging it shut against the warp for a few days may well prove to be effective.

  1. To do this, look along the door to check the extent of the warp. Then, with the door just touching the doorstop, measure the gap between the door and stop at the widest point and cut a wooden block slightly larger than this gap.
  2. Fit the block at the point where the door and stop shut, so that it touches the stop at top and bottom. If leaving the door shut isn’t possible, you can either try altering the position of the hinge on the door frame to take up the twist (see diagram), or else alter the doorstop. How you do this depends on whether you have a stop which is a separate piece of wood nailed on (planted) or one cut out of the wood of the door frame itself (rebated). If you have a planted stop, close the door and cut a block of wood slightly larger than the widest gap.
  3. Run the block down the edge of the door marking the stop with a pencil.
  4. Prise the stop off. Loosen with an old chisel then pull away from the frame with your hands.
  5. Plane the stop then refit it flush with the door.

A rebated stop forms part of the door frame and can’t be removed. Instead you have to add a shaped piece to the stop to fill the gap.

To do this, measure the length of the gap between the door and stop. Then measure the width at the widest point.

Cut a wedge to these dimensions (see diagram) and nail it to the stop at the appropriate point. Once the wedge is in position, trim it again until you get a perfect fit.

The remedies above only work if the door has warped at the top or bottom corner. If it has warped in the centre you will have to cut a curved wedge tapered at both ends.

Another way to deal with this problem, if you can remove the door, is to try laying it flat, supported on two chairs, bowed side up. Place some heavy weights on top and leave it for a few days.
