Using Old China Plates to Decorate Your Home

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Interior Decorating

Old china plates don’t necessarily need to be thrown away. Consider using them to decorate different rooms in your house. One of the best ways to cut costs when decorating your home is to reuse those items you already have. Old china plates can really add to a room’s décor when you use them creativity.

Make a Mosaic Table from Old China Plates
If you have old plates that are chipped or broken, don’t toss them in the garbage. If you break them up even more, you can use the broken pieces to make a mosaic table.

  • First you need to break those pieces of china into smaller pieces.
  • Take all those pieces and arrange them on a table with a flat surface. You might choose a coffee table or a side table, for example.
  • Make a mosaic pattern by gluing the pieces of the plates onto the surface of the table.
  • You can seal the pieces in place using grout, giving the table a finished appearance.
  • Arrange the pieces in whatever pattern you like. You might even choose to use colored grout, which will give the table some more character.

Display Old China Plates on a Shelf
Do your old china plates have some character to them? They why not display them on a shelf in your home? You don’t have to limit your use of china plates as décor items to the dining room. If they fit the style of the room, you can display them in the living room, the kitchen, and even the bedroom.

Try to find a shelf that will match the style of the plates. If the plates are old and antique-looking, consider using a distressed wood shelf on which to display them. By using different sized plates, you can really give the area a unique style.

Hang Old China Plates on the Wall
With a plate hanger, you can easily hang any plate securely on the wall. Plate hangers are typically available at most craft and home stores. Although this is perhaps the most popular way of decorating with china plates, you can create a unique look by putting all different types and sizes of plates together in a single area. You might want to try to find other plates at consignment shops and flea markets to mix in with your old china to create a trendy décor space.

Paint the Old China Plates
You can repaint your old plates to match the décor of your room if they are white or even a solid color. Using acrylic paint, you can either paint them all one color, or if you are creative, then you can paint pictures or patterns on them. Once you paint the plates to suit the décor of your dining room or kitchen, then you can either hang them on the wall or place them on a shelf. This is a great way to use old china plates while getting a new look from your room. If you like, give your kids a couple of plates to paint and then hang up this cute art project in their bedroom.

So when it comes time again to buy new china plates, don’t just throw your old ones away. Instead, you can save yourself some money by using them to decorate your home.

Kitchen Sinks Seek Undivided Attention

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Kitchen Remodeling

Even if you only make a cup of coffee in your kitchen, chances are there’s one place you interact with in your kitchen more than any other. That place is the kitchen sink. The lowly kitchen sink is now being recognized for its daily contribution to living. The style of sinks is also changing with the times – and it’s no longer the ubiquitous double-sink variety, either.

No longer divided

One of the key changes in kitchen sinks has been the move away from the double bowl. Once the standard for dishwashing, the double bowl sink in today’s kitchen looks almost as old-fashioned as the ice boxes of yesteryear. Over the past ten years, sinks have moved to the one bowl style. The standards include the farmhouse or apron style sink and the single bowl stainless sink. These work the way people cook and clean today. The double bowl was originally designed to allow for filling the individual bowls with soapy and clean water respectively. Few, if any, people do dishes this way anymore. Most dishwashing falls to pots and pans and pre-rinsing before putting the dishes in the dishwasher. Small saucepans would fit in the double bowl sink but few large pots would.

Short on space

The problem with the double bowl sink is that there’s not enough room to wash large pans well. And because of that, it’s easy to bang, scratch, and nick your sink. The idea of updating double sinks was just to make them deeper. That really didn’t help, either. It just meant more bending over to wash the dishes at ever-deeper levels. No, the need was for width. Unlike the double style sink, a large, one bowl can easily handle large cookie sheets, frying pans, and cutting boards without all the scratching and with room to spare.

To the trough

The farmhouse and one bowl sink has now made even more headway in the kitchen with the recent trough-style sinks. These longer, narrower sinks allow more than one person to clean dishes side by side. Some select trough sinks for tandem dishwashing, some for cleaning crafts and cleaning side by side, others just for their unique appearance. Many of the trough sinks look like sinks from the turn of the century – you may have even seen them in older homes. Will you see more of these? Probably. They’re interesting and if you do a lot of dishes, you might just need one.

More than dishes

A sink now does more than clean up after cooking. A sink can become a focal point in the kitchen. Put in an interesting-looking sink and it can make a statement. If a single bowl would work for you and you want to update your kitchen, a kitchen sink is an easy and affordable improvement. Most home centers carry single bowl sinks in the $200-$400 range. If style is the key concern, try a hand-hewn stone single sink for about $1,700 at Sinksgallery.com. They have copper, stone, and stainless sinks with beautiful detailing. But never choose a sink based just on looks – or what you’re used to.

A client of mine wanted a one bowl apron-style sink for her kitchen renovation (which would be a great choice design-wise), but her friends insisted she go with the double bowl because that’s what they had. We discussed the pros and cons of both sink styles. That’s how you should choose, too, because the sink needs to work the way you wash not what the styles dictate. I chose a one bowl style for my home and I’ve never been happier doing the dishes.

Return of the White Kitchen

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Kitchen Remodeling

The white kitchen was extremely popular for about ten to fifteen years way back in the nineties and eighties. However, in the years since the turn of the millennium, the white kitchen fell out of favor and took a decidedly back seat to stained wood. Yet the versatility of a white kitchen with it’s clean appeal and soothing look has never really gone away. Instead, the white kitchen is making a return with some new twists that make it look fresher, up to date and more appealing than ever.

White vs. white

The first place to change in the white kitchen is the kind of white used on the cabinets. White is no longer just white. Now, white cabinets range in whiteness from bright white to antiqued white. Both look fresh and current, but with a different appeal. If the bright white kitchen appeals to you, then the whiteness, just like it was in the eighties and nineties, is the key. Sheer white cabinets look especially good in vintage style kitchens. White cabinets with Craftsman style frames look beautiful in bright white. Cabinets with old fashioned cup style drawer pulls make a beautiful pairing. Add the nostalgia of white marble countertops and you have a winning combination.

To keep the kitchen extra vintage-looking, have appliances such as the dishwasher and refrigerator dressed with cabinet doors and this will make them blend into the kitchen and not detract from the look. But if a fresher, more current style is what you’re after, add shiny stainless appliances and your kitchen will be up-to-the-moment gorgeous with a slight contemporary feel. It’s this pairing of stainless with white that creates a nice contrast of color with sparkle. Having stainless appliances with white cabinets makes the white kitchen up to date versus the monochromatic – and dated — look of white cabinets with white appliances. If you have a white kitchen in need of updating, adding new stainless appliance might be all it takes to bring your kitchen out of the nineties and eighties and into the 2000’s.

White with color

Another way to update that all-white kitchen is to add a touch of color to your cabinets. If you have an all-white kitchen and a white island, consider replacing the island with a wood cabinet island or simply paint the island a contrasting color. Another distinguishing feature of the white kitchens of today is the attention to detail. Cabinets today have more detail and much, much more moulding. The crown moulding at the top of the cabinets makes the kitchen more current and is a mark of quality cabinetry. Adding crown moulding to the top of older cabinets is an inexpensive option that will help make the kitchen more current and the cabinets more substantial, but the cabinets still need a finishing touch. This can be done with a toned down shade of white paint on the cabinets and a wash of stain in the crevices of the design. Adding the layer of stain brings out the details in the cabinets and makes it look more today and not so bright.

A standard

White kitchens are gorgeous. If a new kitchen is in your remodeling plans consider a white kitchen for their overall appeal and interest. And, if you’re updating a white kitchen, simply creating more attention to detail – such as adding new pulls, changing old solid surface and laminate counters to natural stone, adding mouldings, and some color, can make about a twenty year difference in the look of your kitchen.

Bathroom Heaters Make Mornings Easier!

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Heating & Air

There is an old saying that asserts the hardest part of the day is just getting out of bed, and, for many people, this is exactly the case. Even when there are not any terrible burdens that are out there waiting for us in our daily life, just waking up and getting the day started can seem downright insurmountable when the bed feels so comfortable and another “few minutes” of sleep sounds so tempting. Thankfully, it really is not necessary to go on battling yourself every morning if you are willing to make a few basic lifestyle changes that will ensure that you get a good night’s sleep and have a few creature comforts waiting for you in the morning.

While it can be difficult for some of us to get moving in the morning nearly any time of year, getting out of bed is particularly tough during the coldest months of the year. The bed is just so warm and cosy that the prospect of the cold linoleum and frigid temperatures in the bathroom make the rigors of one’s morning hygiene sound particularly uninviting. This is where it pays to have a few creature comforts waiting for you in the morning to make getting up a little easier. One great way to help get your half asleep corpse into the shower is to invest in a small bathroom heater that will have your bathroom heated to a comfortable temperature by the time you need to get moving. You wouldn’t believe what a big difference a little heater like this can make on those cold and dark winter mornings.

However, the cosiest bathroom in the world might not make a bit of difference if you have not gotten a good night’s sleep. Although there are some people out there that need to seek out medical intervention for real afflictions such as serious insomnia or chronic pain, most people can get really improve both the quality and quantity of their sleep simply by making some common sense changes to their evening rituals. For people who have find that they have a particularly hard time drifting off to sleep naturally in a reasonable amount of time, making the hour before getting into bed as mellow as possible can make a big difference. Rather than watching an exciting television show and having a snack right before bedtime, sitting comfortably to relax with a book or calm conversation will ensure that your mind and metabolism have had time to slow down before crawling under the covers so that you can get the rest your body and mind needs. Being properly hydrated throughout the day also helps ensure that you will wake up with a better sense of general health and ready to take on the day.

Ever find yourself not enjoying the time you spend in the bathroom? Go to Hygiene Supplies Direct and have a look at the bathroom heaters available.

Air Conditioning For Your Office

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Heating & Air

Installing an air conditioner in your office is a good idea, and it helps create a pleasant atmosphere, which is perfect for those who work there. Moisture if build up in the room can make working hard. It reduces the moisture in the air and thus making the work easy. If the weather is hot outside, in your office it is still the same cool weather, hot temperature may reduce the staff productivity but an air conditioned office won’t affect the productivity level of your staff.

If you are looking for a new air conditioner for your office, there are factors that must be taken into account before you buy an air conditioner for your office. The factors that may be considered are the number of windows in the room for which you are buying the air conditioner; the size of that room, one major factor is that how many people will be there in the room to work throughout the day.

When it comes to air conditioning there is some other information that you must also know, apart from the factors mentioned above. You will have the chances of choosing a perfect system for your office if you have more information about the air conditioning units.

Following is a description of things you be aware:

1. The rating tells you that how an air conditioning unit effectively removes the heat from the room. For more heat removal the rating must be high, more heat is removed if the rating is higher. If you have a large room it is certain that a low rated system won’t cool the air effectively to make the atmosphere in the office room pleasant for working.

2. What is the EER (energy efficiency ratio) Number of The Air Conditioning you are buying? – This tells you how much power or energy the air conditioning unit requires to wok properly in an effective manner. When buying an air conditioning unit you must go for a unit that has got a higher EER (energy efficiency ratio). A higher EER means less energy is consumed. Another thing worth telling here is that, as the EER number increases so the price of the air conditioning unit. To use an air conditioner in your office an EER number between 8 and 11.5 is juts perfect.

3. How Is The Temperature Controlled? – Heat sensor thermostats are installed in most of the air conditioner today; with the help of this sensor it adjusts the temperature of the air entering the unit either using a programmable or a manual control.

4. Is the Maintenance Easy? – place the air conditioner so that the filters inside can be easily removed for replacement or repairs.

5. How Does Air exit From the Unit? – All you need is an air conditioning system that expels the air outside with no noise inside the room. Choose an air conditioner that has a variable speed fan and it works in conjunction with the thermostat.

Ecological Heating Systems – What Are the Options?

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Heating & Air

Consuming less energy has become some sort of a sporting activity across the globe. Countries and individuals are competing, who will manage to save more. It is especially actual in the times of fuel crisis with more and more people entering so called fuel poverty.

But it is not just about saving money. We all have been too reckless about using nature’s resources. We have to consider several factors here. We cannot take from nature without a limit. Unfortunately, the natural resources are not bottomless – the oil and coal will come to an end some time in the future.

Much have been done during the recent years to tackle the problems, new technologies are being developed, ecological heating systems devised, alternative transportation solutions found. Nothing of it will prove worthwhile unless the consumer shows a motivation to go out and start using the new technology.

Grow your Own Fuel

Let’s see what ecological heating options are available in the current market? The most obvious choice is pellets and other types of biomass. Here we talk about corn stoves, wood pellet burners and straw burners. With wood pellets it depends on how are the pellets produced – if the factory specializes in just producing them, you cannot call it ecological heating. The only way pellets worked for environment would be that they were made from by-products (saw-dust) at a joinery. Dedicated factories just produce extra CO2 making it even worse for environment.

Corn stoves are the most affordable way to ecological heating. They burn shelled corn which is nothing more than maize seeds. In the process of growth corn plants consume CO2 from the air and when burnt they release less CO2 than they’ve consumed, thus making environment cleaner. Corn stoves are usually priced from $800 to $2000 and pay off within the first or second year of using (compared with fossil fuel burners).

Living in a Cave?

Sod houses is another way to cut consumption big time. Sod is not meant as an insult, it means a house which has the majority of its body (including the roof) covered in soil. Some people achieve similar result by building their houses into a hill side. Soil provides perfect insulation during winter and great cooling during summer. Coupled with solar panels on the roof, a sod house can make you almost independent from energy suppliers.

Heat from Down Below

Another popular yet expensive way to heat your house is to use heat pumps, scientifically known as ground source heat pumps. It uses an idea that the earth accumulates loads of ambient energy (from the sun and from its hot core). It works almost like a refrigerator by accumulating the scarce heat that there is down the earth under your house. Using a series of pressure cycles, it can put up to 60 degrees Celsius into your heating system. It is expensive to install but saves you up to 70% off your fuel bill. It means that you still need an alternative source of heating but you can offset the installation costs in 10 years time.

Although some eco-designs are expensive, the truth is that sooner or later they do pay off. So, calling green energy “too expensive to be afforded” is actually wrong. You can save money in the long run and save the planet for the next generations.

Have you considered saving money by installing a green heating system? The easiest way to get your foot on the eco-ladder is to choose one of the Corn Stoves available. It will provide heat for your house and put a stop on being dependent on fossil fuel supply. Are you ready to take that step?

What’s The Best Type Of Marble For Your Kitchen Floor?

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Flooring

Marble flooring is one of the more popular types of flooring tile that people use nowadays in their homes. Although the use of marble as flooring tile dates back to the time of the Greeks and Romans, it is now finding its way back to people’s homes, and more specifically, to their kitchens.

What is marble?

Marble is actually the result of the exposure of limestone to high temperature and pressure, causing it to crystallize into the natural material that we now know as marble. It comes in a variety of colors, designs and patterns, as well as shapes and sizes, making it very ideal for use as tiles for flooring, countertop, and other similar applications. However, what makes marble tiles so appealing to be used as flooring tiles is its characteristic of being durable and aesthetically pleasing at the same time. It is a durable material, making it easy for it to resist stains very well. This is probably one of the main reasons why marble is considered to be one of the best materials for flooring.

Marble as kitchen flooring

Although marble can be used for flooring in the kitchen, not all of them offer the same type of quality and effectiveness as with some other types of marble, which is why there are only certain marble types that would be considered as the best ones to be used for such a purpose.

Marble comes in a variety of grades, depending on how durable and resistant it is to breakage, with Grade A marble being the most durable and resistant. If you are going to use marble for your kitchen floor, you must make sure that the grade of the marble that you are getting is of the highest one, especially since you are going to use it in an area where there will be a lot of possible contact with the floor through different mediums, such as the appliances, kitchen utensils, food ingredients, as well as liquid substances. You need to make sure that the type of marble that you are using in the kitchen is durable and resistant enough to handle a few bumps, scrapes and slams, in order to avoid major damage to the marble flooring like cracks and breakage.

It is also wise to use marble types that need the least amount of reinforcement, which means that it will be able to handle stains, as well as breakage, with very minimal support from sealants and protections. This is important if you want your marble flooring to last in the kitchen, especially since the kitchen is the place where a lot of mishaps and accidents occur, and in consistent durations.

One such marble type that offers most of that is the “tumbled” marble. It not only is durable enough to handle breakage, but is also resistant enough that it can handle the possible stains and damage with minimal support, but this does not mean that you can just leave a spill on it. You still need to take care of the marble flooring regardless of its ability to resist stain.

However, these are not the only characteristics that make tumbled marble so appropriate for kitchen flooring. This type of marble is considered as appropriate for an area such as the kitchen due to the fact that tumbled marble has a less slippery finish, thereby reducing the chances of accidents due to slips from happening. “Honed” marble is also less slippery, due to its dull, matter surface. However, this type of marble is more susceptible to stains and abrasions, making it a problem to have in the kitchen.

Evaluating Morningstar Bamboo Flooring And Other Suppliers

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Flooring

The bamboo is a type of grass that grows not just in China but all over Southeast Asia. It has now become quite fashionable to be used as flooring in many homes around the world as it is of the same high quality as many traditional hardwood floors and not as expensive.

As each stalk of bamboo takes only 5 years to be fully mature and can then renew itself without replanting, it is certainly an attractive alternative, as opposed to cutting down trees which can often take decades to become fully mature. Many companies like MorningStar Bamboo Flooring are slowly becoming known the world over for being able to provide us with this beautiful and environmentally friendly flooring.

As this particular kind of flooring continues to increase in popularity, the number of flooring companies supplying this will continue to grow as well. This will make our task of finding and selecting one which is trustworthy even more difficult. Oftentimes people might have to spend thousands of dollars on their flooring and they need to know that the company they are dealing with can be relied on.

Below are some items of background information about Morningstar and their products:

1. The boards are made from bamboo plants that are 4 years or older. Using immature bamboo reults in inferior floors.

2. Morning provides various choices of designs and coloring to enable the customer to make a selection which matches the style of their home.

3. They have a variation of floors which does not utilize any artificial stains and is instead colored naturally. This takes advantage of the fact that raw bamboo has some sugar content. When the bamboo is heated to a certain temperature, the sugar is caramelized and this results in a sugar-brown hue for the floor boards.

4. To make the boards easy to maintain and practically impervious to normal wear and tear, aluminum oxide is used as the pre-finish material.

Below we provide you with some simple guidelines you should be looking at when trying to find a reputable as well as dependable bamboo flooring supplier.

1. If you can, visit their premises. Morningstar Bamboo Flooring for example can be found in hundreds of flooring stores across the country. Also, why not try your local lumber yard as well?

2. Whenever you are shopping online for any kind of bamboo flooring, try to find any reviews and recommendations relating to it. Also look at the quality of the site offering the bamboo flooring and this will give you an indication of just how serious they are about the products that they sell.

3. Why not give the supplier a call and see how their staff interact with the customers. Also see if they are able to answer your questions as completely and succinctly as possible. Also see how long it takes them to actually answer the phone. If they are not prompt in answering the phone, give them a miss and go on to the next supplier on the list.

Finally a really good way of gauging if a business is reputable or not is to consider just how long they have been trading for. Suppliers such as MorningStar Bamboo Flooring have been going for several years now and have made all those customers who have dealt with them during this time very satisfied. You should be cautious when dealing with those companies who have only been around for a couple of years as they will not have gained the knowledge and experience to be able to provide excellent products and services.

A Guide To Hardwood Flooring

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Flooring

Cherry, white oak, birch and maple are other popular woods. Pre-finished engineered wood flooring is
very popular since it is very easy to install. Cost effectiveness is its prominent advantage. 1 reason for
choosing wood flooring is for the allergy benefits. Use it on bedrooms and they simply feel relaxed,
romantic, and dreamy. Maintaining wood flooring is also very easy. If there are children in the house,
wood flooring is prone to more serious damages such as stains, scratches, cuts, and scuffs. Wood flooring
is one of the most popular flooring choices of all times. Since only the core of the wood is actual wood
there is less chance of the flooring twisting, warping or even cupping. Only exotic hardwood flooring will
give you that stopping power that you desire and crave. When they do begin to show wear, they don’t need to
be replaced. Wood flooring can be refinished for a fraction of the cost of a new tile floor.

Laminate

If you plan on installing the floor yourself, with real wood or laminate, you should consider using the
interlocking system. Laminate can be installed over virtually any surface, but wood cannot be installed
over some surfaces. However, times have changed quite a bit in the world of laminate including the
craftsmanship. Better quality laminate is being used and more detailed craftsmanship has been applied so
they are sounding better and better everyday. When building a guitar you want the soundboard, better known
as the top, to be as lightweight and strong as possible. Creating this ratio with laminate is often
difficult because in order to make it strong it ends up too heavy. Carpet is one of those things where if
you’re planning to go for the cheapest option, it’s best to avoid it altogether, as it will be truly
terrible. Cheap laminate is simply much better than cheap carpet, and if price is an issue for you, it’s
an option you’d be better off considering. Carpet is one of those things where if you’re planning to go
for the cheapest option, it’s best to avoid it altogether, as it will be truly terrible. But laminate is
another creature all together.

Hardwood

Engineered wood flooring has been one of the great innovations in flooring to hit the market. Acclimatize
the Flooring: One of the biggest mistakes made when installing hardwood is not allowing the slats or boards
to acclimatize to the home. Hardwood floor never goes out of style. Solid hardwood can give a room an
expensive and high quality finish. Many people prefer the natural and organic look of wood in various
finishes. A TV stand made of hardwood is typically durable and attractive. What hardwood flooring offers
is the luxury of choice and an ease of integration into an interior design. Along with the advantages of
appearance, hardwood is and continues to be a choice in flooring that can add structural strength to a
residence or office. When you are making something as large and solid as a bed you are going to want to
use harder wood. However, not all woods classified as hardwood are hard, just as all woods classified as
softwoods are soft.

Bamboo

Bamboo is very similar to wood in color and form. How Bamboo Is Turned into a Floor. Timing is also
important in processing bamboo. Since bamboo is technically a grass, you might be wondering how it can be
made into a flooring material. It is thus a renewable source, with the promise of almost stable prices over
the years. Bamboo makes an excellent flooring product. Bamboo is milled both in the vertical and
horizontal direction.

Installation

Other questions to be considered are how long the installation will take, if the contractor has a license
and the warranties and guarantees. Wood floor installation is generally done by the supplier, although
some manufacturers have do-it-yourself flooring as well that you can install. Using wood for heating
requires a lot of research and consideration before you start. There are a lot of local regulations and
national regulations that need to be addressed before any installation is started. The installation
procedure is the same as that of a laminate floor. Although hardwood flooring installation is no easy
task, rest assured however that it’s still something doable by yourself…just as long as you have the
essential skills and tools, of course.

Carpets are known to cause allergies because they are difficult to clean. Unlike wood flooring, which is
composed exclusively of hardwood, laminate wood flooring is made from a combination of synthetic and
non-synthetic materials. Created in Europe, the product has now been in use for over 20 years. Laminated
wood flooring is an interlocking system that is installed on top of an existing substrate. Scratches and
cuts can be sanded out from time to time, so the floors will achieve the same look as they were when they
were installed. Extending the life of your wood flooring is fairly easy too. Then, you will want to
choose between Parquet and tongue and groove flooring. The other layers of the engineered hardwood
flooring are plywood or high density fiberboard. Many people prefer to cover the areas with carpets.
You can be confident that genuine Hardwood Flooring will add significant beauty, quality and value of your
home. Bruce Hardwood flooring is the most extensively used hardwood flooring in America.
