An Emergency Power Generator Can Be an Important Aspect in Saving Lives

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Electrical

Many people do not think about the severity of the electric going out in one’s home. There may be many people who are prepared for this type of occurrence but there are probably many more who are not. Losing electricity could very well devastate a family. The Emergency Power Generator could very well be their solution for eliminating this fear of disaster. You will find that there are many people who depend on their electricity not only for their daily needs but also for their lives. They may be on medical equipment that runs on electric. This equipment could be meant to help them breathe.

If they did not have this medical equipment, it could be a life and death situation. The Emergency Power Generator could very well save their lives if the electric happens to go out, and they do not have any back-up batteries. What about the people who are on a fixed income and work from paycheck to paycheck. If the electric goes out, and they lose all the food in their refrigerator, this could be very devastating. It could mean that they will not be able to feed their kids until their next paycheck.

These occurrences as well as many other situations could be eliminated if you were to have an Emergency Power Generator. You will find that there are many generators on the market to day that are very affordable and can handle the job that you need them to. These units can be fueled by gasoline, diesel, or propane. You can also purchase an inverter generator that will get its power from your car battery or some other type of battery that is a deep cycle type. You will need to consider what you would have to give power to in order to figure out, which is best for you.

The brand names that you will find on the market today include Pramac, Onan, Yamaha, Kohler, and Generac. You will find many others as well. You can visit many websites on the Internet where you can view the different models that these manufacturers have available. You will be able to compare the models as well as their prices to see which model you would be able to afford that would take care of your situation. Having this Emergency Power Generator as a back-up plan when your electric goes out, is a very smart move.

How a Wind Turbine Works

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Electrical

Today I want to talk about how a wind turbine works. The topic has come up a few times in conversations I’ve had with other do-it-yourselfers, and the answer to that question is surprisingly simple. Of course the short answer to the question is that a wind turbine works by capturing wind energy and turning it into electricity. From there that electricity is sent by wire to your home, your garage, or your energy storage system (usually batteries).

In reality though we can go much deeper than that without getting too complicated; it’s all about the physics of capturing the wind. To cover the topic well we need to talk about two elements. First we need to cover how wind energy is captured. From there we need to talk about how that kinetic energy is turned into usable electricity.

How a Wind Turbine Works – Capturing the Wind

To start out we need to cover one simple idea. A wind turbine captures the forward force of the wind and then uses that force to turn the blades. What’s really happening here is that we’re taking the forward momentum of the wind, and turning it into a sideways push to turn the blades. The blade design of your wind turbine is actually what’s responsible from this transfer of energy. By using a tilted or a curved blade (usually both tilted and curved), the wind is deflected in such a way that the wind pushes it sideways and in turn turns the blade.

Of course we also need to talk about the tailpiece of your turbine. Without one the sideways force exerted by the curve of your blades would turn the entire turbine assemble rather than just the blades. While the wind pushes sideways on your blades to turn then, it’s also flowing directly allow the tailpiece which keeps the assembly facing the wind and allows your blades to turn freely.

How Wind Turbines Works – Turning Wind Energy into Electricity

Once we understand the basics of how the wind exerts force to turn the blades, we also need to talk about how the electricity is produced. Behind the blade assembly is a rotor, which is attached to a shaft, which in turn is attached to your wind generator. In most residential applications the wind generator is something as simple as a DC motor.

If you understand the basics of electricity, then you would know that by rotating magnets around a conductor you produce electricity. Essentially this is what a DC motor is. It consists of magnets which are able to rotate around a conductive center. As your turbine blades rotate in the wind the shaft rotates your magnets in your DC motor which produces usable electricity. In a nutshell this is wind turbines work, and although we’ve only taken a basic look at the physics behind it all, you now have a better understanding of how to capture the wind to power you home.

A Ceiling Fan For the Great Outdoors?

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Electrical

You may have a lovely sunroom or enclosed porch that you’d like to make use of during hot weather, but you can’t always do so, because the room gets far too hot. Even on a balmier day, the humidity may get in your way. Opening windows doesn’t help, because there’s no air movement outside, either. And even if you have air conditioning piped into the room it may not circulate well enough to make sitting there enjoyable. By adding a ceiling fan to help circulate the air and provide you with the gentle breezes you need, you may be able to substantially increase the amount of time that you’re able to use your outdoor room.

Manufacturers have designed outdoor ceiling fans differently than the indoor fans, because they have to be able to continue functioning well while being exposed to much damper conditions than those indoors. Standards are set much higher, and outdoor fan models must pass a battery of tests which measure how well they continue to hold up in wet conditions.

You can do a search online and just take a look at all the different models that are available, and you’re sure to find some that will look great in your outdoor living space. There are a lot of different fans out there to choose from. In this article you’ll find some information about a few of the different models and the options you have to select from to find your perfect fan.

Monte Carlo Fans: A Day on the French Riviera

Monte Carlo is a brand name that makes high-quality indoor and outdoor ceiling fans. Because Monte Carlo is such a highly-reputed brand, and due to the rigorous testing the outdoor fans have been put through, you’ll know that you’re getting the best when you choose a Monte Carlo with a 172 x 20mm torque induction motor. The Espresso model comes in either a white finish or roman bronze. The Grand Isle features blades that are pitched 13 degrees to maximize air circulation. Both models come with limited lifetime guarantees, remote controls, and optional lighting kits.

For a more nautical theme, the Yachtsman offers a heavy-duty, balanced motor with teak blades that are guaranteed not to wobble. In addition, it has a 14-degree blade pitch which will move a lot of air for you. This model comes in both Roman bronze and brushed steel, and all hardware is constructed of rustproof stainless steel.

The Animation of Fanimation Fans

Fanimation is another top-of-the-line fan company. Some of its highly-unique fan models, such as the incredible Escalade, cost over $500. However, you’ll find that their fans are worth every penny. The Escalade has been designed with a streamlined grill and angled louvers so that air will flow more evenly. It comes with an 18 degree blade pitch and a 10-year guarantee on its motor. The housing is 20″ in diameter and is available in either a matte white or galvanized steel finish.

The Benefits of a Minka Aire Fan

Minka Aire has a large number of outstanding outdoor ceiling fans on the market in every style from sleek and modern to ornate. You might choose the Gauguin which comes with a rustic oil-rubbed bronze motor housing and palm leaf blades for a tropical look. The Rainman is a very unique fan with brushed nickel housing and silver blades. The Rainman also has a built-in, caged halogen light. For a more elegant look, you might like the Craftsman which has an ornate housing and dark-finished wood blades.

The Basics Of Installing A Bathtub

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Bathrooms

So, you are ready to spruce up, refresh, or repair your bathroom, which might mean installing a bathtub. Why should you replace the bathtub? Well, for many people, it is a matter of necessity. Perhaps the bathtub is old and cracked or maybe it is leaking and causing damage to the bathroom. For others on the other hand, it is simply a matter of wanting something new, a better design, or you are just tired of looking at the same bathtub day after day. Whatever your reasons for a new bathtub, it is important that you understand how to install it properly.

First, you will need to gather all the needed tools and accessories that are used while installing a bathtub. You will need to take measurements of the tub area so you are able to choose a tub that is the right size. If you buy a tub that does not fit, this will create frustration as well as possible financial stress. You should gather all the nails, screws, pipes and fittings as well as any other items needed, before beginning your tub installation. Trying to install a bathtub without all the proper materials is not an easy thing to do, so be sure to gather up all you need before you begin so you are able to do the job properly.

The most common mistake made by many homeowners while trying to replace the bathtub is the failure to turn off the water that feeds the bathroom, before disconnecting the existing pipes. Failure to do so will lead to a flooding of the area that can damage not only the floor but also the walls, leading to repairs which are even more expensive. It only makes sense that for you to avoid this type of water damage that you make sure to turn the water off before you begin.

Before installing the new bathtub to its chosen area it is important to make sure that you attach and tighten all the new pipes properly, as well as secure the bathtub supports. Once this is done, you will place the connections for the drain, while making sure that the trap is lower than the drain to enable the tub to drain properly. Then you will be ready to connect the hot and cold water lines to your new bathtub. Once these are secured with the nipple and caps you will then turn the water back on. You should check for any leaks of all drains and pipes and correct any possible problem before finishing with your installation of the tub.

After checking and being positive there are no leaks, finish up with a tub surround. In some cases, these come with a new bathtub, can be purchase separately, or created yourself using tiles or drywall that is water resistant. Installing a bathtub can be an easy project if you know what precautions to take first.

When buying your new tub, make sure to ask about all materials you will need to install it so you don’t have to keep running back to the store. Being organized and having everything you need within reach, including installation instructions, will make your bathtub installation much easier.

Consider Glass Countertops For Your Bathroom Renovation

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Bathrooms

When it comes to renovating a home, no two rooms do more to increase the value of the property than the kitchen and bathroom. Not only will you maximize your design dollars by making changes in these rooms – as the smallest of changes can affect the largest of transformation – but any renovation to these rooms can make the home a more attractive buy for any house hunter.

In the bathroom, especially, well-spent money can mean the difference between an ordinary bathroom and a spectacular bathroom. When it comes to getting the most for your money in bathroom renovations, nothing goes as long a way as countertops; a material that can easily transform the entire space.

Choosing bathroom countertop material comes down to personal style and budget. The most commonly chosen are stone, ceramic tile, and laminate. But a non-traditional – and beautiful – a choice that is gaining in popularity is that of glass countertops.

The element that must considered whenever there is a change made to the bathroom is water. Steam, humidity, and moisture can wreak havoc on the most durable of materials so it is important to ensure that you have chosen a countertop that can hold up successfully in this very particular environment. Glass – as we know – is impervious to such conditions. It simply can be wiped off and the moisture has disappeared.

In addition to its resilience, glass also offer a unique look for any bathroom. Because they are transparent they add size to any small space; and for anyone who has worked to make a small bathroom feel and look larger, glass can do wonders.

For decorating purposes glass countertops offer a creative way to define the decor of your bathroom. Many owners choose to place flowers, candles, or other decorative objects underneath the glass – instantly creating an interesting showpiece in the bathroom. And because glass is clear it provides a neutral palette on which to build a cohesive design; it will blend seamlessly with any decor or act as the catalyst to further a design plan.

Another advantage of glass is that it never goes out of style. Elegant and timeless, glass will always hold up regardless of the decorative trends that are popular at the moment.

Of course, every material has its disadvantages and there is generally only one that can be said of glass. Glass countertops – because of the nature of its material – can be breakable. But most often, a specially designed glass – one that has an increased thickness – is used for making such countertops so ordinarily breakage is a rare occurrence.

Glass countertops can be found at any large home improvement retailer, bathroom design showplace, and even online. While many come pre-cut to a standard bathroom size, there is the option of having yours custom cut to fit a non-traditional bathroom space. But, ultimately, you will undoubtedly find that glass countertops are a low maintenance, highly resilient, and beautiful feature that completely transforms your bathroom.

Bathroom Sinks and Cabinets

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Bathrooms

Bathroom cabinets were used to be a simple box, mounted on the wall in earlier days. Now they are considered as the important styling component in our bathroom. Bathroom sinks are another vanity which adds style to your bathrooms. Bathroom sinks has come along way from the ordinary hollowed out stone, used in earlier days. Now bathroom sinks are available in different styles, shape and colour. The material used for making sinks is of wide variety now. Stone sinks, stainless steel sinks, porcelain, and fiberglass are some of them. Before buying the sink, one has to consider about the position and the usage of the sinks. Depending upon what the sink will have to endure and whether it will come in regular contact with water, the choice of the material can be decided.

Stone sinks and stainless steel can with stand any condition. But porcelain is highly susceptible to damage; it gets scratched or chipped very easily. But the advantage of porcelain is that they can be repaired and cleaned without much problem. Porcelain sinks are available in wide range of colours, to match with the cabinets and other décor of the bathroom. Stone bathroom sinks also come in different colours but they get stained easily, as the stones are highly porous. The cheaper type of bathroom sinks are the fiber glass sinks. They are less feasible, as they turn dull due to regular contact with water. It is better to select bathroom sinks, which include faucets and drain assembly which makes the installation more easy and perfect.

Bathroom cabinets are an essential component of any bathroom. Now a day stylish and most elegant looking cabinets are available. There are sleek varieties to save space, antique –look cabinets which provide traditional look to your bathrooms, or custom made types to suite any of your specific needs. Bathroom cabinets are available in the traditional American style with frames attached to it, to cover the row edges of the cabinet. The frame less or the European style bathroom cabinets have their row edges covered by simple trim strips. The bathroom cabinets can be tall and large and provides storage area to tuck away things, so the bathroom remains clutter free.

The least expensive type of bathroom cabinets are the stock type, they are mass produced and hence cheaper than other types. But they are available in only a few ranges of size and style. Modular bathroom cabinets are the comparatively new type of bathroom cabinets. They are also mass – produced. Modular bathroom cabinets are more popular as they provide flexibility in the design. The most expensive of all types are the custom made bathroom cabinets. They are not mass-produced, and they are usually built by the cabinet shops according to the need of the customer. Bathroom cabinet made of different wood is also available. You can have cabinets made of walnut, cherry, oak or maple, finished with high –gloss lacquer to give the natural wood finish.

Bathroom storage cabinets may be of wall cabinets or medicine cabinets. Corner shelves in the bathroom also provide storage area. The space above the toilet area can be used for storage, if cabinets are fixed there. Modern day bathrooms have separate shower and toilet area, so fitting the cabinets away from the shower area increases the life of the cabinets. Wall mounted sinks and cabinet takes up less space, as they do not have contact with the floor you can utilize that space for putting other objects like a small table or chair or the much needed trashcan. Sinks which are mounted on top of counters or cabinets are more stable and sturdy than the wall mounted or the free standing one.

Bathroom Cabinets and Sinks can make a world of difference in your bathroom design, there are many ways to use these for more space, or to create a unique feel in your bathroom, get bath design tips at http://bathroomscentral.com

Cleaning the Indoor Air

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under General Contracting

Outdoor air contains everything from auto exhaust to industrial emissions, and in many of our larger cities, smog and ozone advisories are commonly reported on the news. However, recent studies by the Environmental Protection Agency indicate that indoor air is 3-5 times as dirty as the air outside. Many people do not realize that the air inside their homes and offices contains harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds), chemicals, allergens, bacteria, viruses and mold spores. These pollutants are responsible for the millions of allergy and asthma cases in America each year.

Cleaning the air is mandatory if you want to breathe better and reduce (or eliminate) allergy symptoms. The most important factor when cleaning the air indoors is to remove any allergens that may be present. This may involve replacing the carpet with hardwood flooring. Perhaps, your polyfoam-filled mattress needs to be replaced with a non-toxic, cotton or wool mattress. Household chemical-based cleaners should be replaced with brands that use natural ingredients that are not harmful to one’s health. A vacuum with a HEPA (High efficiency particulate air) filter is highly recommended as a means to clean the carpet, flooring and upholstery. The HEPA filter traps fine particulates (less than 0.3 microns) and prevents re-circulation back into the room environment.

A HEPA air purifier uses a HEPA filter to trap airborne allergens down to the size of 3 microns in diameter. This includes bacteria, viruses, dust, mold spores, pet dander, radon daughters, and other lung damaging particles. HEPA air purification is utilized in environments where the removal of submicron particulate matter from the indoor air is mandatory, including operating rooms, pharmaceutical labs, and computer chip manufacturing facilities. HEPA air purifiers are recommended by the CDC, Homeland Security, EPA and several other reputable organizations.

An air purifier with activated carbon is a necessity if your environment contains gaseous odors, chemical vapors or tobacco smoke. Activated carbon contains small microscopic pores within the carbon to adsorb (trap) harmful gases or odors. Potassium iodide or zeolite can also be added to the carbon to remove a wider range of chemicals (ammonia, formaldehyde, benzene).

It is important to purchase an air purifier that does not produce ozone and is certified by the IAACM (International Association of Air Cleaning Manufacturers). Many cheap ionizers (think television commercials) produce toxic ozone as a by-product. Consumers unknowingly purchase these machines without realizing they’re polluting the air inside of their home, thus endangering their health.

Sauna Rooms – For Greater Health, Homes and Happiness

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under General Contracting

Adding a sauna room to your home can help your health and personal finances.

Indeed, many health benefits have been attributed to regular sauna bathing, including improved blood circulation, improved lung function, and strengthened immunity to illness. A study by the British Medical Association found that people who take sauna baths two or three times a week reduce their incidence of colds and flu by more than 65 percent. Imagine the impact that could have on your own life: fewer visits to the doctor and pharmacy, and fewer days away from work spent feeling worried, run down, and just plain miserable.

Even if a health insurance plan covers your medical expenses, a sauna room in your home can still save and even earn you a considerable amount of money. If you already enjoy the benefits of sauna bathing at a local health club, gym or spa, calculate what you would save in usage fees and gas expenses if you stayed at home to sauna.

Also worthy of consideration is the extra money a sauna room could provide you if and when you decide to sell your home. Often perceived as luxury items by real estate agents, special features such as indoor saunas typically help to increase the resale values of homes. Yes, there will always be an initial investment attached to the addition of a sauna room, but the potential payoffs will more than make up for it.

Remember that an indoor sauna room doesn’t have to be the same size as your living room or family room. Many people choose to transform just a portion of their bedroom, bathroom or basement into a sauna room. After all, the smaller your sauna room is, the more efficiently you will be able to heat it.

For practical purposes, however, you don’t want your indoor sauna room to be too small. You’ll need to have enough space in your sauna room to be able to move around freely, lie down on the sauna benches, and share your sauna comfortably with family and friends. Ultimately, the decisions on size and other aspects of design are yours to make, as your indoor sauna room can be fully customized to reflect your unique personality and preferences.

And with the popular option of do-it-yourself sauna kits, you can be as involved in the sauna building process as you choose to be. Once you decide on the size and features of your sauna room, finding and assembling a DIY sauna kit should be relatively easy. Don’t be intimidated if you don’t possess any previous sauna building experience; the do-it-yourself sauna kits contain the pre-cut materials and detailed instructions needed to assist even the most apprehensive first-timer.

Whatever steps you take to add a sauna room to your home, do not ignore the importance of home sauna accessories. Sauna accessories like cedar headrests and backrests, loofah sponges and sauna fragrances can constitute the difference between a sauna bath experience that true sauna enthusiasts would judge as being mediocre and one that is superbly relaxing, refreshing and remarkable.

For its proven positive impact on human health and happiness, an indoor sauna room should be regarded as a necessity for anyone who owns a home.

Pertti Olavi Jalasjaa is the Finnish-born author of “The Art of Sauna Building,” an acclaimed reference book on sauna construction. He is also the general manager of Great Saunas, which has been manufacturing and selling high-quality saunas and sauna kits to sauna enthusiasts around the world since 1974. What’s Involved with Refinishing Hardwood Floors

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under General Contracting

Nothing brings back the luster, shine, and the natural beauty of wood flooring that like refinishing does, especially if the floor has deep scratches and dings. However, it is a big job, so deciding whether or not you want to be a real do-it-yourselfer and get at it yourself, or whether you want to hire a professional is important.

Do you have the time?

First off, the job will take several days, you will not only be working for many hours on filling cracks, sanding, buffing, and staining your floor, but you will also have to allow about 24 hours for each coat of finish to dry (this varies depending on the type of finish you opt for). So three days is a good estimate of the amount of time the job will take.

Equipment

Refinishing involves two major pieces of equipment – a drum sander and a buffer. These large machines can be rented at most home stores, and are large enough that you will most likely need a truck to haul them home. Dealing with these alone is often enough to make some people opt for hiring a professional. There is also a small amount of other tools you will need including an orbital/palm sander.

The Work

Okay, so if you have decided that you have a few days to spend on your floors and that you can haul the equipment home, the last major detail you’ll want to consider is the work involved: sanding, buffing, cleaning, and finishing along with a few other smaller tasks.

Sanding and buffing floors is not an incredibly difficult job. However, the machines may take a little getting used to, especially the buffer. At times the buffer may seem like it has a mind of its own and you may have to work with it a bit, but this is typically not backbreaking work. However, the job of refinishing gets more difficult as you go along.

After you have sanded and buffed the floor, you will need to do a very thorough job of cleaning up. You will need to clean up the dust from the floor, walls, and ceiling. Once cleaning has been done (along with some other small tasks which may have needed to be done before sanding – things like sinking nails and filling cracks), it is time to finish the floors.

Applying stain to wood floors requires a lot of elbow grease, and you will be on your knees a lot. You will need to carefully cover the entire floor, section by section, being carefully to feather out any brush marks. Also, you will have to do this not just once, but twice – so kneepads are a must! Once the second coat is done, you will have finally finished this job!

As you can see, there is a lot involved with refinishing your own floors, but if you do decide that you can handle it, perhaps you’ll get some satisfaction of a job well done on your new, beautifully rich wood floor.
