Dog House Plans – Consider This When Building a Dog House

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under DIY

I may have never seen my wife so upset as the time when I came through the door with an old stray dog I found. She wasn’t too happy that I took it upon myself to make the decision about our newest family member. With the right words I managed to get her to agree to keep him but only as long he stayed out in the backyard. I didn’t like the idea my new pal being subject to the harsh conditions of the outdoor while I slept nice & cozy indoors. I knew right away it was my new job to build him a place to live and I began looking at various dog house plans.

I was in utter shock at how many different directions I could go with my four legged friend’s new home. I made sure to pick out the best dog house plans. With all of that in place I put my tool belt on and got started.

When building an outdoor home for your pet it is very important that it is built with high standards. The right selection of materials will play a huge role in the life expectancy of your dog house. You really need to put your heart and soul into this and build it the right way. I’m sure you’ll at least be putting a few hours if not a few weekends into this and it couldn’t be any more painful to walk outside and see your dog house in ruins. You’ll know deep inside that you’re the one to blame, that is why it so important to do a quality job. If you can afford pressure treatment, I wouldn’t go without it. You would be surprised at how fast the weather can tear up untreated lumber. Building with pressure treated materials will give your dog house a much longer life time.

With a dog you never know what it’s going to get into next. I used to have a dog that would chew up anything he could get a hold of. It is certainly something to consider when selecting the right material to use. Yes pressure treated wood is the best option but if your dog likes to chew the chemicals on pressure treated wood pose a dangerous threat to your dog. If your dog is a chewer I would highly recommend that you find a different means of building material.

You really want to be sure that your dog house can stand up to the seasons as well. Not just structurally but internally too. If it is getting hot outside it’s a sure thing that it’s getting hot inside the dog house as well. It is important to use a design that incorporates an air flow to keep your dog cool during the summer. With the colder months you won’t want your dog freezing to death either. Put a blanket or two so he can snuggle up and keep warm.

My name is Frank Kendrick and I am do it yourself kind of guy. I spend my most of my weekends doing home improvement projects of all sorts. It is my hobby and once I’m done with one project I’m usually off to the next. For great ideas on home improvement projects that I use including Dog House Plans you might like to take a look at http://ShedPlansElite.info

Backyard Shed Plans – Build a Backyard Shed

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under DIY

Many of the houses built these days always have good parking space, plenty of compound and the most definite thing that seems not to lack these days is a backyard.

It is quite evident that by the move of technology that even houses are being built with new and great ideas. Nothing tends to be the same old same old; they are changing by the day.

The one thing that people do not know what to do is with the space that comes as the backyard. That is why even backyard shed plans have been structured in order to help people in building and in the beautification of their yards.

Most of the backyard shed plans are available via the internet and are there at very affordable prices. But before one gets to purchase on it is best to consider some few questions that will lead them to choose the best.

The first thing is to know the amount of space they have in their backyard that they are planning to build on. It may be that they only want to build a certain sector and not just the whole yard.

This is because there are backyard shed plans that are designed for large yards and others are designed for small ones.

After this is to consider how much one is willing to spend in the backyard plan.

You would find that the backyard shed plans are all drawn in different forms and the more complicated it gets the more on will spend on building it. It may also tend to be simple but the materials that are required to build it are quite expensive.

The last thing is to know how you want your shed to look like at the end of the day. Should it be simple or sophisticated?

When it comes to backyards people tend to pay less attention because they tend to be at the back of the house there fore no one gets to see them.

But the one thing to know is that it is your house and your neighbors can tell what kind of a person or family you are.

You would find that most people’s backyard and full of garage stuff and a lot of garbage and this does not paint a good picture. Things have been made easier as they are constructors that you can call in order to have your backyard done.

And they come as a package sometimes; the backyard shed plans and the person to do it. It may cost you but at the end it is all to your benefit.

If you are looking for more backyard shed plans, I highly recommend My Shed Plans elite guide by Ryan Henderson. Learn how to build your own shed at my site.

How to Build Cabinets

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Cabinets

Cabinets are important in a room’s layout. Their primary purpose is to store things. Knowing how to construct cabinets imparts an appreciation of a very basic need that one sometimes takes for granted.

Cabinets store things. In the bedroom, they are used to store clothes, shoes, bags, and toiletries. Cabinets also store linens, towels, curtains, among other items. The bathroom has the medicine cabinet and a cabinet that contains toiletries like soap, fragrances, and shampoos.

The kitchen cabinets contain pots, pans, dishes, utensils, and cleaning agents. Secondary storage areas, but nevertheless still important, are cabinets that hold files. Other cabinets store equipment and accessories like CDs, DVDs, books, magazines, tapes, and other things. Cabinets are also used to house audio-visual equipment like television, stereo sets, and computer sets.

A cabinet’s construction is constant for the different cabinet designs. A cabinet is a three-dimensional piece that has a framework, which is covered by materials like solid wood, plywood, particle board, laminated wood, glass, stone, metal, among other materials. Integrated within the cabinets are drawers and shelves. A cabinet’s front is composed mainly of the openings, which are supported by the hinges. To top off the look, one has a choice of adding cabinet door knobs to complete the design.

Let’s start with the design. After that, estimates are produced so that one has an idea of the materials to secure. Then it is time to build the framework, which is comprised of lumber or metal. If the framework is metal, then welding is used in the joinery. If wooden framework is used, the wood may joined through the use of rabbets, glue, screws, or nails.

The cabinet facing comes after the framework is done. Various materials are available, in which the most common ones are plywood, wood, medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and particle board. Plywood and wood facings are glued or nailed to the framework. When using MDF or particle board, it is difficult to use nails and glue for adherence. The boards are pre-bored by the manufacturer so that it is easier to screw the materials together.

Now that the cabinet is almost complete, it is time to use hardware like hinges, cabinet door knobs, hanger rods, drawer slides, dish racks, and the like. If the cabinet is laminated, there is no need to paint. If the cabinet is wood, painting is necessary. Pre-finishing techniques include adding putty to joined surfaces and sanding them in preparation for the final coat. Once the cabinet is painted over, let it dry for a time before using.

One now understands how cabinets are made. It is time to enjoy the fruits of one’s construction labor. Store away!

How to Choose Cabinet Hardware

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Cabinets

How to choose cabinet hardware doesn’t have to be a totally mind numbing experience. While it can be really overwhelming once you see all the options out there it really isn’t that hard to narrow down your choices based on the type of cabinet that you have. You’ll need to choose what type of handles the cabinets will have as well as what kind of hinge hardware to use.

First things first, where is the cabinet? Is this a kitchen job or are you decorating a game room or living room?

For non kitchen rooms you’ll want to go with a design that fits the room theme. For instance if you have a bar then you can find cute little brass wine bottle handles to attach. If it’s a poker themed game room you can even make your own knobs.

To make a poker chip knob just epoxy a bolt onto the back of a poker chip and install it in the cabinet.

Those are just a few tips for non traditional cabinets. Don’t be afraid to get creative.

Now if you’re installing stuff in the kitchen then you’ll probably want something a little bit less outlandish.

For natural wood cabinets you need to look for traditional hardware items. These are typically ironwork or brass finished handles. They add a touch of class to the cabinets. If you have particularly heavy looking cabinets then you’ll need oversized chunky hardware to balance out the look. A dainty knob on large pieces will make it look misshapen.

A great new trend out there is stainless steel cabinets. The sleek modern look of steel doesn’t work well with protrusions. Instead stainless steel needs a flush mount set of hardware to help maintain its sleek look. These are typically custom built into the door during initial construction. If not then you’ll need to get some flanged inset cut handles.

Moving out of the kitchen let’s look at hardware for the utility room cabinets. Obviously these aren’t going to have the same kind of intricate detail as something in a living area. Here you just want to go with functional. Pick up some cheap aluminum handles that will screw directly into the pressboard and laminate cabinets. The holes for these are already predrilled. If you happen to just need to replace one knob that’s popped off you can just upsize the knob with one that has a slightly larger bolt.

How to choose cabinet hardware depends on a few factors. What room is the cabinet in, is it going onto a signature piece or a cheap laundry room style commercial cabinet? The size, shape and even the cost of cabinet hardware will vary depending on the usage.

One last thing to consider when buying new cabinet hardware though is that you’ll need to buy handles and hinges in the same finish. If you start mixing and matching the cabinets will just look off and not have that professional look. Shopping around is going to be the best idea out there.

Author Jennifer Akre is an owner of a wide variety of online specialty shops including that offer both items and information on how you can easily furnish and decorate your space. Whether it is cabinet hardware for your bathroom or knobs for your kitchen there are many tips you can use to make those spots both functional and beautiful. Click today and indulge your senses.

Provide Breathing Space in Your Bathroom With Wall Storage Units

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Cabinets

The wall storage cabinet and built in cabinet are the essential fixtures that we have to carefully consider when designing the bathroom. Unfortunately, most of us have the tendency to relegate them to the backburner and discover later that we have problems and complications because of such actions. You have to remember that it will save you a lot of money if you already consider future scenarios in as far as the design of this bathroom fixture is concerned than having to remodel your bathroom to resolve the problem after only a few years.

The key to maintaining order inside your bathroom is the proper utilization of space. Thus, it is essential that you properly allocate bathroom space and consider future space requirements when designing your home. You must also consider the exclusive space requirement of each member of the family.

You must always go for the recessed, shallow and tall shelved compartments on your home partitions. In this way you are able to maximize the use of that available space. This holding space can be used to store folded towels, toiletries and other items that you want inside your bathroom. You may also consider designing a closet for your linen just outside the bathroom and along the hall or even inside the master bedroom.

If you are currently doing some remodeling in your home, hanging of a shallow console on the partition of your bathroom can do a lot in resolving your issue about limited holding space. You have to remember that function is your primordial concern and as soon as you are able to address this concern, you can already explore the design idea that will blend with the existing theme inside your bathroom. While you are at it, make sure that whatever addition you make inside the bathroom does not impede on the door clearance. This is no joke as there are a lot of instances when homeowners find out later that they can not open and close the bathroom doors because of a console or locker that was added when it was remodeled.

In addition to the shelving system and recessed compartments, you can also outfit your bathroom with hampers, holding drawers and many more space saving bathroom fixtures. If you still want to consider other design option then it is also wise to explore kitchen cabinetry designs and assess whether you can find one which you can also adopt inside your bathroom. In most cases, manufacturers of kitchen cabintries also make bathroom lockers and compartments. As such, you can just specify the features that you want included in your bathroom fixtures.

Just like with the fixtures in our kitchen, those that we use inside our bathroom can be factory stock models, semi-custom or fully customized models. In choosing the right locker for your bathroom, make sure that you pick one that is outfitted with hinges that are self-closing. This is primarily for safety considerations.

As far as style is concerned, you can choose among a wide array of options that include the clean cut style and traditional designs of fine-grade furniture. Whatever you choose, make sure that it seamlessly blends with the overall theme of the design in your bathroom. Of course, this shall be decided upon only after the space issue is resolved.

Chuck R Stewart selected wall storage units for his apartment. He purchased a built in cabinet for his newly remodeled den.

Portable Reverse Osmosis For Healthy Great Tasting Drinking Water

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Appliances

It is commonly believed that reverse osmosis is the best way to filter water. These filters are known to be effective on water of very poor quality.

Lead can be removed, along with heavy metals, bacteria, chemicals, chlorine, and pesticides, as well as other contamination. Reverse osmosis was created in the 1950’s as a method for making sea water safe to consume, but right now it is used mostly for drinking water in residences. When osmosis happens, the water passes by a flexible membrane that just lets water go through, enclosing contaminants on the opposite side of the filter membrane.

These elaborate filters can purify water in any location, actually allowing sea water to be used safely. The military and other government agencies frequently use portable RO Filters. In addition, they have been sent to third world countries that have areas without electricity and require water that is safe to drink.

A portable RO Filter is versatile and a useful choice, but reverse osmosis filters commonly are for household use only. They use gravity to push the water through the filter instead of pumps or electricity.

Nevertheless, portable reverse osmosis filters can be used in a variety of important ways. For example, it is a good idea to take a portable reverse osmosis filter with you if you are traveling to a location with unclean water. If you are making plans for overseas travel, you possibly have heard people talk about vacationers ending up sick when they imbibe the water from the country. Because of this, it is an intelligent option to bring a lightweight and compact sized portable reverse osmosis unit along if you will be traveling for a long period. Camping in the wilderness is an ideal situation to use them; stream or lake water, as well as other water sources, could be loaded with bacteria and different germs that you don’t have to consume if you use a portable reverse osmosis filter.

If you intend to filter tap water using a portable reverse osmosis unit, search for a model that can filter out toxins like lead, iron and chlorine. RO filters are very good at eliminating bacteria and other contamination, but you will want to have a filter that can remove lead, iron, chlorine, and different toxins. RO filters are made with a filter to trap bigger pieces such as sediment and rust. Next the water will travel through a filter that has smaller holes to catch more toxins, not to mention a carbon filter that can remove items present in the water such as chlorine, metal, and fluorides.

How Do You Clean an Electric Coffee Maker?

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Appliances

I know most people are daunted with the task of cleaning their electric, fully programmable coffee maker. If only we can dump the whole thing in our dishwasher. Unfortunately, a coffee maker motor that is water proof is still non-existent so we have no choice but to clean it on our own.

It is easy enough to clean an electric coffee maker. Here are the steps you can religiously follow so you won’t have any problems:

Step 1: Remove the parts that are detachable and washable. If you can detach some using a screw and install it again after cleaning, it would be better so the cleaning process is thoroughly done. Make sure you know which parts goes where so you will not be scratching your head in consternation when you figure out you cannot piece it back together.

Step 2: Wash these parts first in clean tap water. The next thing you need to do is to scrub the detached parts clean with a paste made from baking soda and water. Baking soda has really fine granules that can strip off the grease and coffee oil in those detachable parts.

You can also use a small toothbrush for better cleaning process. Just dip the bristles in the baking soda paste and scrub the parts clean. Once you have done this, you can now rinse it clean with mild dishwashing liquid and water. Rinse until all the residues are gone.

Step 3: Clean the carafe next. The inside of the carafe have surely collected mineral deposits and coffee oil. If you are using a glass carafe, put some crushed ice inside and mix it with table salt. Swish the mixture around until the grease and mineral deposits have all dissolved.

If you are using stainless steel carafe, you can also do the same ice and salt method or you can use the baking soda paste to scrub the inside clean. Once you are done, rinse it well with mild dishwashing liquid and water until all the soap suds and the baking soda are gone.

Step 4: Use the baking soda again to clean the rest of the coffee maker. Steer away from the motor part to avoid malfunctions. Get some damp cloth and dip the other end in the baking soda paste and apply it on the exterior of the coffee maker avoiding the motor.

Once you have cleaned everything, use the other clean end of the cloth and dampen it with clean water and scrub off the baking soda residues. Do this until all the residues are gone

Step 5: Let everything dry before putting them back together.

Energy Efficient Appliances – Reducing Consumption and Grid Strain

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Appliances

We all want a brighter tomorrow but to accomplish this we need to be a little brighter about how we make use of energy, at work and at home. It is not enough to sit back and let the politicians and activists try to sort it out, we need to do our part. The best part is that by helping ourselves we help others and help secure a bright future for our kids, their kids and so on. We can help, each and every one of us, the best part is that it’s easy.

What do we know about energy consumption? It goes up every year and now we know that it is not possible to sustain the current rate of consumption if we expect to secure a future for our children and grand children. Where does this leave us now? We have choices, we do something or we do nothing, that simple. We can all help, we just need to know how.

European countries have been ahead of North American countries in energy conservation because of the high costs associated with energy in their countries. If we adopt some of their practices we will be ahead of what will eventually make its way to our doorsteps. One method of controlling energy demand during peak hours in the day is to use smart meters to measure electrical use and charge at different rates during the course of an entire day. Peak hours equal higher costs, off peak hours equal lower costs, fairly straightforward. We may not think too much about that today but we will need to in the near future. The province of Ontario, Canada is in the process of installing these smart meters and will adopt the variable rates once installation of all meters is complete. As part of the stimulus package the US allocated $4.5 billion to developing technologies for the “Smart Grid.” “Several million networked meters have already been distributed in the United States.”

Put quite simply less strain means less maintenance which translates to lower upkeep costs which in turn saves the end consumer money. It also limits the need to build more generating capacity and the need to bring on less efficient capacity during peak hours, this also saves the consumer money and reduces harmful emissions. The premise is to charge more when it costs more so the consumer is forced to be more efficient, more conscious about how they use their energy. We can stay ahead of this trend by making small changes now which will benefit us immediately as well as in the future.

How can we do this? We adopt some proven European practices and with a little effort become more energy efficient help the environment and save ourselves some money as a bonus. One of the easiest ways to get started is to take advantage of programmable appliances and make use of them during off peak hours. Peak hours vary slightly in different states and locales but you can be certain that highest demand always falls in around 7:00 A.M to 10:00 A.M and the 3:00 P.M. to around the 8:00 P.M. range, this will vary with the seasons depending on lighting and heating/cooling demands. This makes the objective to use your highest energy consumers outside of these peak demand hours. This may not seem feasible, especially in the evening when we get home from work and start cooking, turn down the A.C. in the summer or turn up the heat in the winter months but it can be accomplished.

This is where we take advantage of programming our appliances and heating and cooling systems to work for us while we are at work or sleeping or doing something else. This is a real benefit now because we can save time, energy and money. For heating and cooling we simply install a programmable thermostat and program it so that the peak hours are avoided. Cool your house at night when off peak hours are in abundance and you do not have to fight the sun. Draw the shades in the day and let the temperature come up a little. For heating turn it down a little at night and use an extra blanket and open the shades in the day to let the sun help heat up the house.

Simple so far, let’s take the next step now. Use programmable appliances to take advantage of off peak hours. Use a programmable crock pot to come on after you leave for work so dinner is cooked when you get home. The crock pot is also efficient and has minimal energy requirements when compared to an oven or stove top so even when used during peak hours it is significantly better than using the alternative. The crock pot is also useful to use overnight during off peak hours, simply remove insert and place it in the fridge, re-heat when you get home. This will also reduce the heat emitted into the house which means less air conditioning use. Take advantage of other efficient alternatives like toaster ovens and microwaves to help as well. The possibilities just keep growing and once we get into this frame of mind and start enjoying the savings and the conveniences it just gets easier.

Michael Legge enjoys the outdoors and realizes that collectively we can significantly reduce our impact on the environment with minimal effort.

If we are all willing to make small changes that do not negatively impact our lifestyle and burden us with significant time and money requirements then we can do our part and reduce our resource use one step at a time to our benefit, as well as to the benefit of our future generations, children, grand children and great grand children.

You can start saving today by visiting http://www.theelectrickitchen.com to see what’s available to save you energy, time and money.

Decorating Your Home this Winter

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Interior Decorating

There are many homeowners who like to change the décor and decorate their home according to the different seasons. There are plenty of creative things you can do when it comes to winter decorating. Although many people use the wintertime to decorate for the holidays, there are plenty of other ways you can simply decorate for the winter season. Following are some great tips for winter decorating in your home.

Decorate Your Home in Winter White
As wintertime approaches, you can turn your home into a white winter wonderland by bringing out your white décor items. White décor items can work to brighten up your home during those dark and dreary winter days and nights. The white also brings out the reminder of beautiful snowfalls, essentially bringing the outside into your home. Some easy ways to add more white to your winter décor include white tablecloths, white candles, and white throws slung over chairs and couches.

Hang a Winter Wreath in Your Home
Fortunately, wreaths are not just for Christmas. They actually make a great winter decoration that you can display from December to March. Whether you make your own greenery wreath or buy a pre-made one, be sure it matches the style of your home. The wreath can be decorated with items associated with winter: pinecones, white or flannel ribbon, and silver charms. The wreath can then be hung on the wall. When looking for a place to hang the wreath, do be sure that the wreath and the wall are comparable in size. After all, you don’t want a tiny wreath on a huge wall with a great area of blank space, just as you don’t want a huge wreath taking up all the space on a tiny wall.

Change Your Furniture for Winter
Changing your furniture for a winter décor doesn’t necessarily mean you have to go out and buy a new set of furniture for every season. It just simply means that you might have to add or take away some items in the room. Adding slipcovers can be a great way to change up your furniture for the winter. Find slipcovers for your couches and chairs in a heavier material and wintery color. You might also decorate the furniture using winter-themed pillows. These pillows can be solid-colored or plaid. Or you might find some with snowflake or snowman pictures on them. You might also add some winter style to the room by draping a heavy throw on the back of the couch or chair.

Change Your Artwork in Your Home for Winter
If you are trying to create a winter décor, you may not want pictures of bright flowers hanging on your walls. Consider storing these pictures away for the spring and summer, and hanging different pieces of art that give your home more of a wintertime feel. Great winter-style pictures include black and white photographs of nature, such as snow trees, rivers, and mountains. Those bright and cheery flowers can also be replaced with hand-painted pictures of country snowfalls or paintings that use rich colors that lend a more wintry feel.

These are just some of the many ways you can bring winter decorating into your home. Changing the look of your home to celebrate the different seasons is a great way to keep things looking stylish and fresh.
