Tankless Hydronic Heater – 4 Benefits of Owning a Tankless Water Heater

Published by under Plumbing

Most residential homes have conventional water heaters in the 30 to 80 gallon capacity. Powered by either electricity or gas, these units pre-heat your water to the desired temperature setting and keep it available for use 24 hours a day. This means you constantly are spending money to heat this stored water whether you are at work, at home washing dished or sound asleep.

While modern water heater technology and tank design has reduced the number of times a heater must power on to maintain the proper temperature the basic operation remains the same. This means that if your family uses more than the average 30 gallons of hot water a day, you are in essence constantly spending money to heat up more and more water in your tank. And if you use less than the average, you are wasting money keeping water hot that you never use.

What is a Tankless Hydronic Heater?

A tankless heater is designed to act as an on-demand water heater that waits until you actually need hot water and then quickly bring the water to the right temperature. These tankless heaters or indirect water heaters as they are sometimes called are some of the the most economical and energy-efficient ways to supply hot water in a home.

How an indirect hydronic system works is easy to understand. When the hot water taps are turned on, water flows into heat exchanger unit. This triggers a water level sensor. When the water has reached a preset level, a small computer ignites the burner elements, which rapidly heats the water enclosed in the heat exchanger unit.

A typical hydronic heat exchanger uses water-filled copper tubing shaped like “fins” in order to create the maximum heat transfer possible. The water in copper tubes, once it reaches the desired temperature is then piped to the open hot water taps, via a special heat piping layout to reduce heat loss.

Once the taps are turned off the heater shuts off. This process results in an almost “instantaneous” stream of hot water always available for you and your family.

Tankless Hydronic Heater Advantage #1 – Compact size: Most tankless hydronic heaters are designed to installed on a wall and with a slim “footprint” can be placed almost anywhere in the home, not just the basement.

Tankless Hydronic Heater Advantage #2 – Saves on Energy Costs. If you have a large family and seem to need an “endless” flow of hot water, then a tankless heater will save you a bunch of money in water heating bills over the long run.

Tankless Hydronic Heater Advantage #3 – Can be used for in-floor heating. Another use for this type of hydronic heater is to pipe hot water underneath thermal mass flooring (stone, concrete or tile) where it is absorbed and slowly released into the above room as heat.

Tankless Hydronic Heater Advantage #4 – Use as an Outdoor Heater. Tankless hydronic heaters are good options for heating swimming pools, spas, hot tubs, garages, small buildings and even greenhouses.

After a successful life in trading, importing and exports, Rupert now spends his time writing freelance articles for many well-known publications, as well as various educational institutions. Garbage Disposal Repair – Simple Solutions For Simple Problems

Published by under Plumbing

I hate to admit it but my wife taught me how to fix a garbage disposal. First, she taught me what not to put in there. And if you want to keep from having to mess with your food waste disposal, you might also want to know what not to put in there. And while some disposers are advertised as being able to handle about anything, it is probably best not to test it just to see. First, you shouldn’t put stringy vegetables in there. Two, any kind of grease or lard can also cause problems over time. And three, bones should not be put in a disposal.

Ok, so you forget or someone else (like the kids) puts something in there that shouldn’t be in there. Or you stuff too much in at a time (it’s best to put one thing in at a time). Or a fork or knife accidentally makes it way in. You flip the switch and no action. And all you get is a hum. What do you do? This is a problem that my wife taught me to fix on my own. It really is not that hard.

On my disposal there is a red reset button near the bottom of the unit. The hum means that the unit has tripped out due to the clog. You can wait just a few minutes, push the reset button and then turn the disposal on to see if it is working properly again. Often it will, but sometimes it will not.

So, there is a second step you can try that I learned when you’ve got a major obstacle jamming things up. And it might be a good idea to unplug the unit for this activity. Using some tongs, you can take out any large items in the disposer. Then with a long screwdriver, stick it down in there into one of the holes on the top of the unit. You might be able to break the jam lose by moving the screwdriver back and forth. If it works, take the screwdriver out, plug the unit back in (don’t forget that one!), push the reset button, turn on the water and turn on the disposal. You should be back in business.

There can be some other problems with disposals that will require calling a plumber. It really depends on how good you are working on things and how patient you are. If it requires much true plumbing or electrical work, I will call the pros.

By the way, as far as preventive maintenance another trick I have learned is to put ice and citrus rinds in the disposal from time to time. It helps to keep the blades sharp, reduces the bacteria and makes it smell better.

Decorating Your Bathroom in a Breezy Ocean Theme

One popular way to decorate a bathroom is with an ocean theme. There are plenty of décor items available that can help give your bathroom that unique ocean look so that you feel like you are at the beach every time you set foot in the room. Follow these tips, and with a little creativity, you can come up with a fabulous ocean theme for your bathroom.

Paint the Bathroom with Colors from the Ocean
You can quickly transform your bedroom into an ocean retreat by painting it blue, green, tan, and cream: the colors of the ocean. Paint the walls cream and then add a turquoise accent wall for a distinctive twist to the ocean theme. Add more color to the room by adding yellow, which will work to highlight the feeling of warm sunlight over the ocean. If you’re really creative, then a really unique idea is to paint an ocean mural on one of the walls. This is a great way to fill a large space and can add a wonderful focal point to the décor. If you’re doing this in the master bathroom, then you can create the feeling that your bedroom is right on the ocean.

Use Real Ocean Accessories
Use items you would find down at the beach or ocean, rather than buying all your décor items from the store. It’s amazing how things such as shells and sand make such great additions to the room. A basket of shelf or bottles of sand on a shelf will add instant ambiance to the room.

Hang an Ocean-Themed Shower Curtain
One of the first things people see when they walk into a bathroom is the shower curtain. Hang an ocean-themed shower curtain for all to see. In this way, you can really play up the shower area. You can go with a more playful theme, perhaps with pictures of fish, or choose one with a beautiful ocean or beach scene on it. Decide whether you’re trying to create an ocean retreat or a fun beach theme, and choose your curtain accordingly.

Look for Themed Accessories to Complete the Look
You should have no problem finding ocean-themed bathroom accessories, as this type of theme is rather popular. Look for things that have some sort of ocean-related aspect to them, such as soap dishes, wastebaskets, bath mats, and towels. A fish-shaped soap dish would work great with a fun variation of this theme, whereas elegant shell-shaped soaps in a blue soap dish would be more appropriate for a serious ocean retreat.

You can use an ocean theme for a master bathroom, as easily as you can use it for a child’s bathroom. After all, there are many different variations upon this theme, from sand sculptures to fish, to lighthouses. Have fun with this theme, and be sure to include your own personality when designing the style.

The Future of Energy Depends on Wind Turbines

Published by under Energy Saving

Kinetic energy of the wind can be harvested and converted into electricity. How? Wind turbines! These are superb machines which rotate and change the force of the wind into reusable and sustainable energy. The wind will always be around, in many places, the wind will blow with a great force. What better way to use a readily available energy to give electrical power to cities all over?

The method works by converting the wind into ‘mechanical energy’. When this occurs, the machines are known as wind generators, wind turbines, wind energy converters or wind power units.

Smaller wind turbines are powered by a single wind ‘vane’ while larger turbine units typically utilize wind sensors and ‘servo’ motors. Horizontal axis turbines have gearboxes. The gearboxes turn the blades’ rotation more quickly, facilitating better energy for the ‘electrical’ generator.

Customarily a tower will have ‘turbulence’ as the force at its back. Then the turbines are generally pointed ‘upwind’ of any tower. To prevent the wind turbine blades from being pushed to the tower by forceful winds, the blades are manufactured rigidly. The blades are also positioned a larger distance at the front of the tower. They are also often tilted into the wind and forward to a degree.

Sometimes ‘down’ wind machines have been constructed despite any turbulence. These machines don’t need more part to be sure that they are aligned with the source of the winds. In spite of the turbulence problem, ‘downwind’ machinery has been built. This machinery doesn’t require more mechanisms for ensuring that they remain in line with the wind. Often blades will bend in high winds; this will reduce their ability to catch the power of the wind. A turbine can break with too much resistance.

If a turbine has a vertical axis, the blades are arranged in a vertical manner to the rotor shafts. Good energy is still produced by the vertical turbines even if the blades are pointed into the winds’ direction. When the direction of the wind is altered, this machine still will produce electricity and other energy. So there are a lot of advantages to the vertical axis turbines.

Often, with vertical turbines, the components are supported closer to the ground. The gearbox and the generator seem to work best in this configuration. It isn’t imperative that the turbine is propped up by the tower for the turbine. Fixing and maintaining this machinery is easy. Some negative points are that pulsing movements can come about with these components.

To put these types of wind turbines on towers is difficult. It is best that vertical axis machinery is put closer to the ground and mounted nearer the base. The best locations would be a structure’s roof top or on a ground level. If you maintain these turbines well as guard against turbulence, your wind turbine will reward you with years of energy savings! Not to mention the benefit of supply environmentally friendly energy.

Solar Energy Advantages – 4 Critical Points to Consider

Published by under Energy Saving

To start with solar energy advantages can be broken up into three main categories, Personal, Environmental and of course the Government. Although you could say that everyone benefits from solar power, we just don’t all harness it. It is only when more people understand the advantages and way it up for themselves, act on what they learn, then we will truly see the results.

To start with I’d like to discuss the personal advantages:

1. The benefits of converting our homes to solar power would have to be the savings we experience. Once the initial cost is out of the way, we will be receiving reduced power bills if any at all.

Some Governments around the world are giving tax credits, rebates and incentives to encourage people to install their own solar panels, that can certainly help out with the initial cost of setup.

More and more people are installing it themselves which also reduces this cost greatly, making it a viable way to start off.

2. Solar Energy costs absolutely nothing to produce, the sun rises every morning and sets every night and there’s one thing we can be sure of, is that this source of energy will rise again the next day.

The fact that there are no moving parts in the home solar panel system means your maintenance is reduced to almost zilch. All that will be required is that you will have to clean the panels every now and then. This will ensure optimum efficiency in your production.

3. Another one of the solar energy advantages is that the system doesn’t emit any gas into the air, neither does it produce any waste product or by-products that you have to dispose of, making it the cleanest form of alternative energy that is around today.

Green power awareness, as we know it, is definitely on the increase. More and more people are becoming aware of the impact we’ve had on our planet, from using fuels like oil, gas and coal, and turning to solar energy is becoming the number one answer to this problem.

4. This has certainly sparked the Governments willingness to support this issue. The American Government has realized the benefits and advantages as well, as they can see it will eventually be a major part of producing energy for this country, I think they like the idea that they will no longer be dependent on foreign countries for the supply of the fuel to make electricity. They are certainly pouring millions of dollars into the development of solar power and soon we will be having cities running of this source of energy.

The only concern worth mentioning is, that at the moment it is fairly costly to set up professionally. However more and more people are getting around that, by installing it themselves, so even the disadvantage has an option to give it less weight in the argument.

So look at all the facts and figures before making your decision which is the best way to go, remember this source of energy will be around for as long as the sun is there, it rises every morning and lasts throughout the day, and then is renewable by doing the same the next day and so on, it’s really up to us to make the most of it. Every day that goes by where we are not capitalizing on its ability to produce electricity, is our loss.

It’s always important to look into Solar energy advantages and in this case the odd disadvantage if you are considering installing a system. And by the way, as I’ve mentioned before, more and more people are saving a heap of money by using detailed plans and step by step videos and making their own solar panels. these will show you every step of the way, to get your system up and running. have a look into this as the benefits are more than just saving you money.

There is a ton of information on this source of power for your home at http://www.idealhomesolarpanel.com so go take a look and I will see you there.

Tips & Tricks to Save on Your Heating Bill

Published by under Energy Saving

Tired of the heart-stopping surprise every month that comes with your electric bill? I know I let out a gasp upon receiving a $240 invoice last month. Being motivated to at least have a sub-$200 bill next month, I decided to employ some energy saving techniques. Perhaps some of them would be helpful for you as well.

First up, a few easy ideas.

Be cognizant of when the sun is shining on the house. Keeping the blinds open and allowing the sun to shine in can really help heat up a home. Conversely, close any blinds that are not receiving sunlight as windows allow heat to dissipate to the outside. To maximize this solar solution, trim back branches that are blocking the sun from reaching your windows.

Next, why not harness the energy you are already using for a second act? Try drying your laundry in the morning. Your dryer generates an enormous amount of heat and some of it escapes into your home. When you are first getting up, the extra boost help take the chill out of air and can help your furnace run less. Now why would your home have a chill in the morning?

Because you are going to lower your thermostat at night by 10 degrees! While you are all snug in bed there is no reason to heat your home to a normal, daytime temperature. This is mainly because you are not “in” most of the house while you are sleeping and, secondly, since you are toasty under the blankets you don’t need a warmer air temperature to be comfortable. In fact, people generally sleep better in a more cool environment. Save some money and be more well rested by lowering your thermostat at night – and during the day.

During the day, you might consider lowering the thermostat to 68 degrees and wear a sweater. The lower setting of two to four degrees can add up to significant savings over time. If you would like to maximize savings, investing in a programmable thermostat might be worthwhile. With this device you can set your thermostat to automatically adjust downward in the evening and raise back up an hour or so before you get out of bed. Further, you can have it reset to a lower temperature while you are at work and elevate again shortly before you return home. This pattern can really supercharge the savings. You can pick one up at an home improvement store for under $75. A more basic model can be had for under $30.

Another large part of the battle is keeping the heat in your home. There are many places heat can escape. For instance, I just got around to checking my chimney and the flue was open! I have been sending heat directly out of my home for months. Don’t overlook this easy fix and make sure your damper is closed. Next, run your kitchen and bathroom vents less often. Not only are they venting moisture but also heat. See if you can’t take a shorter shower to minimize moisture buildup and the need to vent as long. Plus, taking a shorter shower uses less hot water which allows your hot water heater to run less often and save more money.

There are other ways to save money in the hot water heater area as well. Try turning down the temperature. Our heater was set at 140 degrees. Not only was this wasting energy, it was a scald hazard. For these reasons, we have reset our water temperature to 120 degrees and the water is sufficiently hot. You might also consider a hot water heater blanket. The blanket wraps around the heater and greatly slows the dissipation of heat from the heater into the surrounding air.

Windows and doors are notorious for allowing cold air into your home. Walk around and check each one and replace any missing or damaged caulking or weather stripping. Be sure to also check around switches and outlets on outside walls. Cold air will often leak in around them. You can greatly reduce this inflow by purchasing special, inexpensive, foam insulators that are designed for use on switches and outlets. For more detailed information on home air leaks, consult the U.S. Department of Energy’s website.

Although it can be expensive to add to your home, make sure you have adequate insulation in the walls and ceilings. Unless you are only going to be in the home a short while longer before selling, it generally makes sense to add insulation if you do not have an adequate amount. You would need to speak to a contractor and have them help you determine the optimal insulation for your home.

Finally, a word of caution. In a zeal to save as much as possible, I have seen folks block off attic venting. They do this on the theory that allowing the cold air into attic cools down their home below. While this is true, they are forgetting about moisture. The vents are present in part to allow the moist air from your home to escape to the outside. If the vents are blocked, this moisture is trapped in your attic. Since your attic will alway be colder than your home (even with the vents blocked) the water precipitates out of the air and now you have ice or water in your attic depending on the temperature. Next are the nasty leaks, damaged insulation and costly repairs. Avoid much heartache and keep your vents open and free flowing.

Hopefully, you can implement a least a couple of these suggestions – and avoid that short gasp of disbelief once a month when the electric bill arrives!

Guide to Easily Care For Shrubs For Your Landscape

Published by under Landscaping

If you want a green landscape but don’t have a lot of time to spend caring for it, shrubs are a good choice. Properly selected shrubs are easy to care for and can provide year round interest.

Happy Shrubs Are Easy Care Shrubs

Just like in other forms of gardening, choosing shrubs for the landscape means paying attention to the conditions the shrub will be planted in and knowing what you want from the planting. If you have never had your soil tested, a soil test is recommended before you spend a lot of money on landscaping. You will also need to look at the area to see what type of soil you have (sandy, organic or clay) and what type of light each area receives.

Plants that are happy where they are placed will grow as expected and won’t need excessive coddling. Happy shrubs are easy to grow shrubs. You can find the needs of plants by examining the plant tags, catalog descriptions or good reference books. When you shop for plants, have a list of what will grow well in your conditions so you won’t be tempted to buy shrubs that just look nice or that are on sale.

Pay attention to the adult size and shape of shrubs, which will also be listed on those tags or in references. Small and cute now doesn’t mean the shrub won’t become a huge mess later. Also pay attention to how far from the house or walkways that you plant your shrubs. When they reach adult size, you don’t want them to cover a window or make it impossible to reach the doorway. You can prune most shrubs, but constant pruning doesn’t equal easy care.

Remember that there may be many cultivars of the same species of shrub, and some of those may suit your property better than others. For example, there are arborvitaes that grow into trees and those that stay low and globe-shaped. There are junipers that hug the ground and those that grow tall and narrow. There are dwarf versions of many types of shrubs. Some varieties may be more winter hardy in your zone than others.

Some Easy Care Evergreen Shrubs

Arborvitaes or cedars come in a number of sizes. They have soft, flat needles and a pleasant smell. There are some arborvitaes with variegated foliage for additional interest. Arborvitaes will grow well over a large area of the country.

There are numerous forms of juniper in several shades of green and gold. Junipers have sharp needles, and there are some forms that will grow as far north as Zone 4 and as far south as Zone 7.

If you have acidic soil and light shade to full sun, a holly may be right for you. Hollies have broad leaves but are evergreen. Some hollies become quite large over time, so choose carefully. If you have both male and female plants, you will be rewarded with red berries in winter.

Other acid-soil lovers that prefer some shade and protection from winter wind are the azaleas and rhododendrons. There are large and small varieties of both. In the right location, they require little care and will give you beautiful spring flowers. Some varieties are not evergreen in all climates.

For the drier southwestern areas, Manzanita is a broad-leaved evergreen shrub that develops small, bright-red, apple-like fruit in summer.

Easy Care Deciduous Shrubs

Lilacs grow so easily they have become wild in many areas. They will grow in all areas except the far south and desert southwest. They can become large, so use them where they have plenty of room. Full sun and good air circulation are best for lilacs. You’ll be rewarded with lovely flowers in spring.

If you are in California or the Southwest, you may want to grow Ceanothus in one of its many forms instead of lilacs. They have nice foliage and pretty, blue summer flowers that attract butterflies.

Viburnums are easy to grow, with a wide range of flower and fruit types, but four feet tall is generally considered a small viburnum. They are best used where they don’t need to be pruned and are allowed to have their natural shape. There are viburnums for Zones 3 to 8.

Forsythia is another shrub that looks best when allowed to develop its natural form. It’s hardy from Zones 3 to 8. Beautiful golden flowers cover it in spring.

The Burning Bush, or Euonymus alata, is a widely planted shrub in Zones 3 to 7. It has brilliant-red fall coloring. It prefers full sun and a yearly pruning is recommended.

Don’t forget the new shrub roses. These come in various sizes, from groundcovers to large shrubs. There is a wide range of colors. They bloom all summer and don’t require spraying. They may die back to the roots in cold climates, but they quickly recover. Dead branches will need to be pruned out each spring, but after that little pruning is needed.

Barberries are thorny shrubs with small leaves. Many have deep purple or crimson foliage all year. They come in various sizes and prefer full sun in Zones 4 to 7.

For the western coastal areas, a hardy native shrub, Holodiscus discolor, or Cream Bush, with its sprays of creamy white, sweet-smelling flowers, is a good choice.

In the coastal southwest, Rosemary becomes a large fragrant shrub with beautiful blue flowers. It’s tough and drought-resistant and is great for cooking.

Bamboo Fencing – The Benefits of Choosing Live Bamboo For a Hedge, Windbreak, Or Privacy Screen

Published by under Landscaping

Living bamboo hedges, screens, and wind breaks are attractive and excellent as an alternative to bamboo fence panels. If you choose a living fence you can even harvest some of it yourself for the purpose of making your own fence panels for elsewhere on your property, or use the harvested material to make a bamboo wind chime or bamboo fountain, a table or other furniture. Alternatively you could choose an edible species, such as Phyllostachys flexuosa ‘Zigzag Bamboo’, and take the option of having a living fence that can be harvested for food.

Hedge

Bamboo garden hedges are really impressive. They can be pruned, trimmed, or cut in a similar way that you would with any traditional hedging. There are a lot of species of bamboo plants that grow at different heights and spread in different ways. Some will spread faster than others by sending out runners but can be controlled to ensure they spread and grow where you want them to. An example species would be Phyllostachys heteroclada ‘Solidstem’, an aggressively spreading bamboo that is also edible and and suitable to grow in wetter climates. This species will grow to a maximum height of 24′. Wow, that’s some hedge.

Privacy Screen

Cultivation of bamboo species for garden privacy screens is a great option. You can grow an ornamental bamboo variety that can be cut or trimmed to achieve the desired outcome for your garden design. The differences between privacy screens and hedges is that screens are taller whereas hedges are much shorter, and hedges generally have a more formal appearance. An example of a suitable species would be Phyllostachys nigra ‘Hale’, being too tall for a hedge but making an excellent high branching bamboo screen plant with a moderate spreading habit and growing to a maximum height of 20′.

Windbreak

Bamboos are ideal for commercial wind breaks as well as domestic garden windbreaks, and can also be cultivated, cut, trimmed, or harvested. The benefits these plants provide include; wind force reduction, flexibility, root mass, stability, cultivation and suitable species. For a good windbreak you may like to consider a species such as Phyllostachys bambusoides ‘Giant Japanese Timber Bamboo’. This is an excellent high branching species for windbreaks or screens with aggressive spreading, growth to a maximum height of 72′ and maximum culm diameter 6″.

Colours and Variations

Bamboo plant species come in a variety of colours with some leaves being dark green and some pale, some have variagated colouring and there are a variety of cane colours to choose from. For example, Hibanobambusa Tranquillans ‘Shiroshima’ has variegated cream and white striped leaves that make for a stunning hedge and the species can grow to a maximum height of 16′.

Can You Mix Patterns and Prints When Home Decorating?

Published by under Interior Decorating

When decorating your house one look that you might like is that of various patterns and coordinated prints. The problem that you might be facing is wondering if you can mix them together. Most people think that you cannot mix prints with patterns because they will clash with each other. While this is true in most cases, it does not hold true for decorating a room in your house.

If you want to use patterns and coordinated prints to decorate a room in your house you will need to find out what you should do, so that they look well placed and not just thrown together. By knowing what to do when mixing coordinated prints and patterns together, you can give the finished room a professional look without having to pay professional prices.

The first thing to keep in mind when mixing coordinated prints and patterns is to keep the background colors the same. For example, if you start with a coordinated pattern of blue flowers on an ivory background, everything else that you put in the room should have the same ivory colored background. This will tie everything together; making it look like it belongs rather than being hastily thrown together.

The next thing that you need to do is make sure that you repeat the colors in each pattern. For example, in the coordinated print that you are using you will want to use the colors that coordinate with the print, so if the print is a blue you can use various shades of blue to decorate the room. You want to repeat the colors of the pattern throughout the room to help connect everything together.

A third thing to keep in mind is when using patterns you want to use a variety of sizes. You do not want to only use a large pattern, you want to mix it up and use medium patterns in other locations or even small patterns. For example, if you have a couch cover with a large print on it, use a medium print for the throw pillows on the couch.

Finally, you can also add plain or even textured fabrics around the room to add even more interest. For example, you can use a plain pillow behind a patterned pillow, making sure the background color is the same as the plain colored pillow. To really make the plain colored pillow stand out find one made from a textured type of fabric.
