Gum Removal – Getting Rid of the Gooey Stuff

Published by under Cleaning Tips

If you are trying to get gum out of your carpets, sofa or other furniture, there is a way. Your carpet will require deep cleaning involving some elbow grease, but there should be no lasting damage once you are done. Do not use peanut butter. If you do your carpet or sofa will be covered in gum and peanut butter.

The peanut butter trick is an old wives tale. It is about as true as the one about chewing gum staying in your stomach for seven years. If you’ve already tried to clean it with peanut butter, call an end of tenancy cleaning team or professional deep cleaning company. It will cost you, but they will use proper chemicals and equipment to remove and clean it for you.

Trying to remove the gum while it is still at room/mouth temperature is a bad idea. You will need to use either cold or heat. Rubbing the gum with ice in a plastic bag will freeze it, allowing you to scrape it off with a spoon, spatula or credit card. Heat can be applied with a hair dryer, but not so hot as to melt the gum fully into the carpet. Once the gum is nice and gooey, use a plastic bag or cling film to pull it off. In either case, use a product like Goo-Gone or some white vinegar to scrub off any residue.

Your carpet will be gum free in minutes and no one will be the wiser. If you still can’t get rid of it, make a call to your local London tenancy cleaning company and have a professional get it sorted for you.

After years working in the cleaning business Alfred Halfnight is a deep cleaning expert. He now works as a London-based freelance journalist, and has a mission to make you a better, cleaner, happier human being.

Software Tool Every Home Owner Should Have

Published by under DIY

Many homeowners eventually reach the point where a little bit of remodeling is necessary. The bathroom tile needs replacing, the kitchen counters are nicked or the budget will finally allow enough breathing room to finish the basement. Building and remodeling a home is an exciting, expensive and often long process. When properly managed and completed, it can be very rewarding. Not only will you enjoy your home more, often remodeling will increase the value of the property, should you decide to sell it.

Of course one question comes to mind almost immediately: how to handle the design work. Designing an addition or even a simple bathroom remodel takes patience, time and most importantly know-how. If you are a ‘do-it-yourselfer’ the design aspect alone can be enough to make you table any plans you have for remodeling or building. Luckily, there is some nifty software available to help you figure it all out.

HGTV Home Design and Remodeling Suite is one of the most powerful design packages available to the average homeowner. This unique software suite allows users to either design their dream home from the ground up or to modify their existing structure through easy to use menu and drop and drag technology.

For those looking to design and build a home, the software allows you to select a floor plan and customize it to fit your needs. Additional features allow you to add in electrical and plumbing outfits, designate materials and style choices and even add in some landscaping elements. For those that are simply remodeling a room, the suite allows you to completely integrate your ideas into an easy to read blueprint that is contractor ready.

Let’s be honest, one of the most difficult aspects of designing a new build or a renovation is the blueprints. Most homeowners simply don’t have the technical skill to allow them to create blueprints that accurately translate their ideas and plans to their contractor. Hiring a draftsman is just as expensive as working directly with a designer. A better option is using software that allows you to produce professional blueprints that can be used to translate your dreams into reality.

Even better, the software is entirely intuitive. Anyone who has tried to use design software in the past probably believes they need an advanced degree in computer graphics to design something as complex as a home. Even adding in doors and windows is simple with the large library the design suite includes.

Design software is an excellent way to begin work on your latest remodeling project or even to simple dream up the perfect home. Cost effective, easy to use and professional, HGTV’s Home Design and Remodeling Suite can help you design the perfect bathroom, a gourmet kitchen, stylish bonus room or even a multi-level home.

If you are considering designing your new addition or a new home, HGTV’s Home Design and Remodeling Suite will ensure your project starts out right and finishes just like you envisioned it.

Vinyl Siding – When to Use Which Style For Remodeling Your Home

Published by under Remodeling

When you’re ready to give your home’s exterior an extreme makeover, you know you can’t go wrong with reliable and durable vinyl siding. Siding improves the beauty of your home and protects you from the elements during severe weather. While it may appear all siding is the same, there are actually a number of varieties to consider for your home remodeling project. One particular design may not work well for your house’s structure, so it’s important to discuss with a contractor the possibilities.

Consider the look of your home – one or two stories? Split level? Do you plan to use more than one type of exterior? Depending on how you want the house to look, you’ll need to consider the style of vinyl siding to use. Here is a brief rundown of some of the more popular types of siding with suggestions for use.

Rough Split Siding – This design gives the eye the impression that your home is covered by split wooden shingles. Actually, you’re looking at vinyl panels ridged for that rugged appearance. This style is one that can complement a home with a stone exterior, perhaps siding for specific parts of the house.

Half Rounds Siding – A self-explanatory design, half rounds are just that. This isn’t necessary a style used to cover an entire home, but dormers or other sharp points toward your roof.

Dutchlap Siding – Perhaps the most commonly seen vinyl siding, Dutchlap is good to use if you plan to cover your entire house. It is durable and easy to clean, and available in many colors.

Board and Batten – Horizontal siding gives a wall a rustic, rural look. You’re likely to see this style on barns and industrial buildings.

Once you have the style of siding for your home, consult with a licensed, bonded contractor about installation and warranties. Your home will look brand new with the right quality siding.

Maintaining a swimming pool used to be a herculean task. Even if the pool owner has all the chemicals, tools and scrubs needed to keep his pool in tip top condition, there would be some factor that cannot be remedied by these measures. Take for example leaves falling on the pool cannot be prevented by these maintenance supplies.

Even if he has a state of the art filtration, this cannot do anything to dead cat floating on the water. Worse it cannot prevent wayward children or pets from falling into them. To prevent these things from ruining the swimming pool, the best solution may be a robot pool keeper which will guard it 24/7. But no such thing is invented yet.

What has been invented and could be the best thing that could keep the water clean and safe at all times are pool covers. These are simple yet practical solutions to every pool perennial problem of undesirable intrusion either by falling leaves which rot in the pool water and hasten algae and bacteria growth, dead pets which has accidentally drowned while the pool owner were not looking.

Most importantly, it is the best assurance that beloved young children will not tiptoe and fall into them. Pool covers are like lid covers, this time it is a cover for the whole pool. Thermostatic Shower Buying Guide

Published by under Bathrooms

Whether one is buying a new home or just remodeling one’s bathroom, it is of utter importance that choice he makes regarding bath fittings and accessories fit not only his budget, but more importantly comfort as well. Keeping this in mind, a customer needs to morph into a kind of connoisseur while dropping in a shop or store selling bath accessories and bath fittings. This Thermostatic Shower Buying Guide is specially meant for such consumers.

The difference between a potential customer and a permanent one is the right product. To judge the quality or feasibility of a product, especially one that you are getting for your own home, you need to look for reference from the right kind of people. Contrary to popular belief, it´s often not the merchant selling the product. His primary concern is not necessarily your comfort or satisfaction post shower. It helps if you are friendly with your new neighbors, or other recent homeowners who have had skillful experience of buying and using such bath fittings, specially something as complicated as a thermostatic shower. Unlike merchants, they´ll not be guided by profit. Keeping away from those Tele-shopping ads that pop up on TV, is a good start.

Customer satisfaction forums online or even a simple internet search for Thermostatic Shower Buying Guide is a great way to get to know about different kinds of showers available out there. Not only can you gauge the price pattern for different thermostatic showers, but also the reactions that each shower has generated from buyers since its inception in the market. Exploring one’s options over the internet will also yield new avenues where one can realize that the different shopping sites offer hordes of discounts and offers as opposed to actual retail outlets that are bound by a lot of taxes.

Technically speaking, a thermostatic shower is one which gauges any rapid fall or rise in temperature and adjusts itself accordingly. So while buying one of these babies, one need to basically have an idea about the pressure the water flows in, how the shower controls the temperature, and how it gauges when to change or alter its temperature and flow. Also it’s favorable to have an idea about how the shower maintains its pressure – depending on the flow of water or on the basic plumbing system in the house involved. An ideal Thermostatic Shower Buying Guide will address all of these concerns.

As mentioned above, it is well known that e-shopping offers better offers than retail stores. But that does not in any way mean that one should jump in and buy the first shower one sees on a web page. Online shopping comes with the hazard of fraudulent advertising and misinformation at times. So it is advisable to only shop from trusted sites which have been doing business for a few years now and have garnered decent amount of trust from shoppers. Most of these trusted sites also offer refund in case of damaged goods.

A thermostatic shower is one which gauges any rapid fall or rise in temperature and adjusts itself accordingly. How to Build a Corner Cabinet – The Basics to Put Together Your Own Beautiful Cabinet in Your Home

Published by under Cabinets

If you want to keep your house organized and well decorated, you are going to want to build a cabinet for your home. Cabinets will keep things in order and make your home look neatly put together.

Most people want to know how to build a corner cabinet so they can maximize the space they have by storing the items they have. Even if you’re not an expert woodworking individual, you can still put together a great looking corner cabinet with the right tools, materials, and instructions.

If you want to know how to build a corner cabinet, the first step you need to make is determine the dimensions of your corner cabinet and how large you want it to be. Take the measurements of the dimension of the corner that you plan to place the cabinet. You should bring these measurements with you when you go to shop for your wood.

When you go to buy the wood you should have an idea of how much wood you’re going to require. For the average corner cabinet you are going to need a square of wood to be cut in half to make the top and base, two rectangles that measure the side of the square by the desired height, and an extra square for each two shelves.

To get the wood you require you can go to a lumber yard. While out buying the wood you need, you should also get other supplies you need such as paint, nails, and screws.

Once you have the wood you require you will have to measure and cut every piece of wood to make a top, bottom, and two sides. Make the necessary measurements and cut shelves the same size as the top and bottom of the cabinet.

Now attach the sides, top, and bottom. You will then attach the shelves and paint or stain the wood to your desired style. This is the basics to build your own corner cabinet. Of course, let your individual style shine through and create your cabinet to fit your preference.

An Electric Fireplace Insert – What it is and What it Means to Different People

Published by under Electrical

An electric fireplace insert is a great way to convert an existing gas or wood-burning fireplace into one that can be used with the click of remote control. There are two types of electric fireplace inserts. One type, a four-sided box, is a working fireplace by itself, but because it has sides, it can be inserted into a cabinet or entertainment center. The other type of insert is an electric log set that contains the logs, ember bed and flame effect and can be inserted into an existing fireplace.

Convert An Existing Gas Or Wood Fireplaces To Electric

Both styles of inserts are ready to use by simply plugging in to a standard electrical outlet. Plug-in inserts come factory pre-wired, making installation a breeze. There are no gas fittings, no masonry work, no holes in exterior walls, and no roofing contractor necessary because neither unit requires ventilation.

Most fireplaces sadly just serve as a mantle for photos. That’s because traditional fireplaces are not only messy, but also require a lot of maintenance to keep them in safe working order. Chimneys must be cleaned on a regular basis. Gas versions also have safety hazards including dangerous carbon monoxide emissions. On the other hand, a fireplace that’s been converted to electric offers a safe and economical alternative to the costly maintenance associated with traditional gas and wood fireplaces.

The Look Of a Real Fire With An Electric Fireplace

When converting a fireplace, it’s ready to ‘fire up’ in minutes. The insert includes realistic resin logs that produce a realistic flickering flame image. The ember bed pulsates just as real embers would as they react to oxygen. The advantages of using an electric fireplace heater are numerous. Electric fireplace heaters can provide as much as 9,200 BTUs of heat without the fumes associated with gas fireplaces or the smell of a wood fire. Individuals who have allergies or respiratory problems often find that wood-burning fireplaces exacerbate the symptoms, but since there is no combustion in an electric version, there is no smoke, soot, odor or fumes.

Electric fireplace heaters can be enjoyed year round as they can be used with or without the heater on. They are safe to operate and clean while only costing an estimated three cents an hour without the heat or eight cents with the heat turned on. Compare that to the average energy cost of using a gas fireplace ranging from 17 to 24 cents per hour and the seasonal savings really adds up.

Firebox Inserts Include Form And Function

If there’s no traditional fireplace to convert in your home, that doesn’t mean you can’t get the look and feel of a fire. A four-sided insert allows an existing piece of furniture such as an armoire or entertainment center to be used with a dual purpose. By inserting a firebox insert, the focal point of the fireplace can be installed into the function of the furniture. The unit can be moved and rearranged just like other furniture and can be placed anywhere there is an electrical outlet. Units can provide 5,000 BTUs per hour of heat by using a quiet fan that forces the heat generated by the insert into the room.

Whether you choose to convert a fireplace, or add an insert to an existing piece of furniture, you’ll find that electric fireplace inserts are an inexpensive option to add the beauty and warmth of a fire in your home without having to mess with the associated aspects of gas or wood burning devices.

5 Easy Tips to Feng Shui Your Bedroom

Published by under Interior Decorating

One of the most popular places to practice fend shui is in the bedroom. The bedroom is one room in your home that should be a peaceful retreat, and with feng shui, you can create the proper setting in which to get restful sleep every night. Feng shui is a method by which you can design and decorate a balanced room that’s infused with positive energy.

There are several feng shui guidelines to follow in the bedroom, but some are more important than others. Consider some of these helpful feng shui tips to get you on your way to a balanced and peaceful bedroom.

1. The main feng shui element in the room should be your bed.
In your bedroom, a wood bed is the primary source of intimate, personal energy. You want your bed to meet your every need, from the headboard to the mattress. So if you have to make a choice, choose to invest your money in the bed.

2. By placing the bed in a feng shui position, you can create optimal positive energy and love.
When arranging the room, you should be able to see the doorway from the bed, but it shouldn’t be directly in line with the door. The bed should also be on a strong supporting wall.

3. According to feng shui, both sides of your bed need to be balanced in energy.
This means you have the choice of placing side tables on both sides of the bed or on neither side. Also, try to keep any sharp angles—either from the tables or from the other furniture in the room—from facing the bed.

4. When you remove the television, you maintain balance in the room.
The less electricity flowing through your bedroom the better, as removing as many electrical appliances as possible is a key part of feng shui. EMFs can cause an internal imbalance, and your body doesn’t take them in when you remove electrical flow from the room. Also, when you don’t have the distraction of a television or computer, you’ll be able to get better sleep at night.

5. When designing your bedroom, don’t get obsessed with the rules of feng shui.
You may not be able to follow all the correct feng shui recommendations if your bedroom is small. If you focus too much on what’s “correct,” you may end up feeling stressed out and disappointed. Keep in mind that, in the end, feng shui is really about positive energy. If you do what you can with the space you have, then you’ll be able to make the room comfortable for you.

Some people may not believe in feng shui; others may find it too difficult to incorporate into their décor. However, the basic principle is simply to have the healthiest, most comfortable room possible. Feng shui decorating is accompanied by a long philosophical tradition, which demonstrates exactly how these principles can improve your sense of being and your life. If you’re looking to improve your bedroom or simply the feel of your oak bedroom furniture with some feng shui techniques, these tips can help get you started.

How to Choose the Perfect Kitchen Style

Published by under Kitchen Remodeling

Lifestyle and habits of household members determine the home decorating style and kitchen is not an exception here. Due to its specific requirements – functional and aesthetic, the arrangement of the kitchen should be approached very meticulously and style selection should compromise all needs, areal abilities and individual experience of this important living place area.

Kitchen is one of the most important living place areas. Many different processes that require its logical workflow, visibility and space are performed there. In case of a residential kitchen, apart from food preparation and having lunch, kitchen serves to bring together a whole family and to provide them with stylish surrounding for comfortable socialization. If kitchen is visually connected to the dining and living room, it is necessary to adjust the style of decoration through similar, or widely different style preferences.

Large kitchen area provides maximum freedom in kitchen furniture placement design and color selection. In addition to aesthetics, in such kitchens emphasis should be put on practical and functional elements that will allow easier access to foods and dishes, and of course performing actions without excessive bending. Set your oven at the minimum height of 1m, use cabinets to store dishes, use high elements as food storage and set a stove in a separate kitchen part, also known as the island. In other words, create an environment where you can reach all the necessary devices and equipment, including a sink and a dishwasher, with a simple circular movement.

Kitchen can be emphasized through the color and material selection. Special effects, in rustic or modern style, can be achieved with the use of wood or materials that mimic its color and texture. The heat which this material carries into space emphasizes the warm atmosphere of home.

Kitchens can be colored in solid or multi colors and the choice depends on the size of it compared to other groups, such as dining or living room. Small kitchens are not suitable for using dark kitchen elements, but dark color lovers can apply these colors in lower kitchen zone. Forcing light elements above will make an impression of larger kitchen.

Large kitchens should be organized using multiple colors and materials. In addition to a full solid material, use blurred glass to hide dishes and food. This kid of glass will also make kitchen furniture lightweight and more elegant. With proper combining of colors and sizes of elements you can create a harmonious kitchen area where all residents will feel good. In addition, by using multiple colors and materials which are not in strong contrast, you will visually reduce the size of the kitchen and divide it in more functional groups.

If the kitchen is opened to the dining room, it should be treated as integral part of so called daily zone and associate it in style and color with other parts of interior. Ideal link between kitchen and other areas would be a bench board or a desk that will serve as additional work surface or a dining table. Such solutions can be very interesting apart from the visual impression as they provide a practical role too.

Rustic kitchens designed in different colors and ways of processing the working surface create a unique atmosphere. Rustic kitchens are usually performed in gentle or wood colors, as high color intensity would interfere with a rich rustic style expression.

In small apartments it is advisable to integrate kitchen in your living area. The best way to do so is to make sure kitchen fits with other elements of interior, and connection should be created with use of colors, materials, element handles, style, geometry, etc. If you use more colors, apply the softly ones as a basic theme, and use dynamic colors on the details.

Kitchen design is a complex process, so if you have doubts about the selection of colors, materials or any other kind of questions, the best is to contact professionals who will help you with valuable advices.
