How to Tell If Your Chimney is Leaking

Published by under Stones & Bricks

Is your chimney showing signs of leaking? You might be wondering what are some signs that my chimney liner is leaking? To discover any leaks, you will want to carefully inspect the surface of the stone or brick work that makes up your vent. Look carefully for discoloring, or staining, cracks, and missing grout. You will need to make this check on the fireplace surface inside your home and on the outside of your home.

Any staining that you find may mean that gases from your fireplace are escaping in that area. Typically, the stain will start small and grow visibly larger above the leak. The stain is caused by the rising warm gases. If you are not sure of the condition of your chimney, it is a good idea to have a reputable chimney inspector perform an inspection.

If there are no visible signs of leakage, but you are suspicious that you have a leak, a smoke test can be performed. Some qualified chimney repair companies offer such tests. They can seal off your flue at the top and bottom and insert a smoke pellet that gives off a detectable odor. The repairman can then check inside and outside your home to determine if there is a leak.

If you determine that you do have a leak and repairs are needed you will first want to consider what kind of materials to use. You have three primary options for fixing a leaking liner. First, if your vent is made of brick or stone, you could install a new terracotta one. Terracotta liners are very durable and long lasting. However, installing a new terracotta one can be quite costly. A second option is a rigid stainless steel repair liner.

This type of liner is significantly less expensive than installing a terracotta type. Nevertheless, depending on where the flue liner has to run, installing a rigid one can be very difficult and time consuming. The third option is a flexible stainless steel repair liner. This style of liner is the easiest to put in and has the lowest cost associated with it. Before you install a new liner, it is good to have your chimney cleaned so that nothing will obstruct the new installation.

Identifying and fixing chimney leaks will help protect your family from potential carbon monoxide leaks and fires. Therefore, taking the time to know what signs to look for and to perform annual inspections on your chimney will pay you back with security and peace of mind.

House, as one of the most valuable of human properties, may have various threats from natural disaster and pests. However, pests sometimes can be very annoying because the damage that they make can be as severe as the damage of natural disaster. Rats, as one of pests, can make people very frustrated because they are not easy to be eliminated. In addition, most of people are not aware of their presence yet the damages that they make are evident. Therefore, in selecting rodent baits you should make sure that the bait will last for days and should be able to use in dry or wet situation. In addition, the baits should also contain flavor that the rats mostly like. This will ensure the effectiveness.

Quitox Mouse Seed is one good alternative to rats bait especially for house mice. The style of the seed is more attractive than the regular pellet or block style bait. The History of Leaf Blowers

Published by under Yard Equipment

Originally invented in the 1950′s, the leaf blower was improved to its currently recognizable form in the early 1970′s by Japanese gardening engineers. It was embraced as a simple time-saving device for households of most income brackets, and though they have been involved in various environmental controversies involving their notorious emissions, have now settled down into being an accepted part of modern consumer gardening society.

Leaf blowers were occasionally frowned upon by some neighborhoods. In general they were seen as not contributing to the solution of the problem of tidying one’s property, but instead just blowing the problem away, and making it someone else’s. However, in most places the simple machines were welcomed. Due to prolonged droughts in many areas at that time, the use of water for everyday garden clean-up tasks was often prohibited, and this contributed to the leaf blower’s growing popularity. It added to the pleasing effect of a clean, well-kept yard and neighborhood without using any water. Once the drought periods were over, the homeowners continued to use their new yard power tools.

The number of gardening consumers using the machine has risen to the tune of 3 million yearly buyers who insist that the time- and labor-saving benefits of blowers are well worth their value. Many garden owners do not have huge chunks of time in which they can dedicate focused attention to the maintenance of their gardens. If they were limited to the traditional methods of using hand rakes and brooms, garden owners who spend several hundred dollars yearly on these machines might say, their gardens would otherwise wither and decay. Without these machines, their yards would become a general eyesore to their respective neighborhoods, due to a simple lack of quality time to invest.

Manufacturers of the blowers have proven to be an environmentally-aware and neighborhood-friendly crowd, with continued and significant reductions in emissions and noise levels included in every new model created. There is now a great variety of electric leaf blowers, which have proven to be much more environmentally friendly than their gasoline powered counterparts, while offering amazingly comparable levels of power and wind.

Since their inception 50 years ago, today’s generations of blowers have cut harmful hydrocarbon release levels up to 90%, making them essentially an environmental non-issue. They are an accepted means of yard clean-up in almost every US city. In addition, noise levels have been reduced over the years up to 75%, or in general down to 65 db, keeping them well under most cities’ noise level ordinances.

How to Control Noisy Pipes

Published by under Plumbing

Banging, cracking, rattling, whistling – noisy water pipes and connections are not to be overlooked, they might point out critical plumbing troubles. Learn in what way to listen to, and quiet noisy water pipes.

Water Hammer

In case you overhear earsplitting hammering after closing water-availability, this is a water hammer problem that happens once water slams into a shut off control device subsequent to charging down a pipe at high velocity. Left untreated, the recurring collisions ruin piping and fittings. Water hammer arresters are inserted into specific sections to absorb the force of water, and thwart water from crushing into the shut off regulator. Hammering sounds point out that air has escaped. Emptying water from the pipes ought to renew the water hammer arresters. Turn off water supply to the home. Turn on lowermost taps in or around the premises to flush the network.

Cracking

Creaking sounds appear with the stretching and shrinking of the copper water pipes that carry hot water.

Clattering

When you overhear your piping rattling or shaking anytime water is charging through, chances are they are loosely attached. Water velocity charging through unfastened piping makes them collide against the wall, producing the clattering noise. Anchor the pipe in place or pad the pipe to stop the clattering sound.

Shrieking

As soon as water runs through a limited zone of the pipeline a shrieking sound is produced. This is typically caused by deposit buildup, or a defective washer or valve. If shrieking arises whenever you switch on a particular spout, replace the washer or valve to solve the problem. If shrilling arises as soon as any spout is turned on, the restriction may be located in the central water-supply regulator. If possible, adjust water pressure, yet if the whistling sound persists a plumbing service provider might replace the original control device.

Pick up on your noisy pipes to understand in what way to repair them. Left untreated, noisy pipes usually worsen into costly plumbing crises like split pipes, rusted pipes or dripping pipelines.

Beware the Basement Finishing Corner-Cutter

Published by under Remodeling

One of the advantages of using a professional basement finishing contractor is having someone to ensure quality construction. Construction management (e.g. managing tradesmen, quality control, etc.) is an important part of any project and can really make a difference between a poor finish and a quality one.

On the surface, many aspects of basement finishing seem mundane and self-explanatory. This is far from the truth. Unless you really know and understand trade-specific construction specifications, you could be setting yourself up for huge disappointment.

Drywall is one of these trades which seems very simple and straightforward. However, if you don’t know what you’re looking for, you could end up walls that look like a garage, and not the basement finishing masterpiece you envisioned.

One specification that should not be overlooked is drywall taping. For the benefit of those new to construction, drywall is attached to your framing with nails and screws. Pieces are cut to fit every section of your basement finishing project. Corners are covered with “corner bead,” a metal (or sometimes plastic/fiber) strip that is nailed to each corner.

After this, drywall “tape” is embedded in a skim coat of drywall mud over the top of every seam in the drywall. Once taping is done, it is time to either paint – or texture with the desired wall texture.

Drywall taping will make or break the quality of your finished walls. To make the most profit on your basement finishing job, it is common for contractors to shortchange the taping process. Usually this is done by embedding the tape in only one or two coats of drywall mud.

If only one coat is used you’re in danger of getting that “garage” look. The thinking here is that with enough texture, the seams won’t be noticed. Beware! This is a sure way to get shoddy-looking walls. Even with massively heavy texture, you will see ridges and lines along every seam. The purpose of basement finishing is NOT to provide the “garage” look.

Even with a second coat and prodigious sanding, the result will be an undesirable finish. The danger here is not really ridges and lines, but rather what looks like shadows or gentle humps in the wall. This is especially true if you’re close and look down the length of a wall.

For your basement finishing project you should require a 3-coat taping system, sometimes called a level-3 finish, prior to any texture. If you want smooth walls with no texture request a level-4 or even level-5 smooth finish.

First of all, the 3-coat system will cover any tape over the seam and totally eliminate the ridges and lines that are apparent with only 1-coat. Second, the 3-coat system spreads the drywall mud over seams out to 12″ or more, which will eliminate the shadows and gentle humps. After texture, the walls in your basement finishing project will be finished with the quality you deserve.

When you hire someone to work on your home, do you prefer it when they cut corners? Or would you rather they give you a professional job? I believe the answer is self-explanatory. Make sure your basement finishing contractor knows from the get-go that you won’t allow corner-cutting.

Electric Log Splitters – Better Than Gas?

Published by under Yard Equipment

Several years ago if you asked me if an electric log splitter was better than a gas splitter I would have probably fallen over laughing. But I have to admit, after trying several recent electric ones I’m very impressed. In fact, there are several distinct advantages that an electric wood splitter has over a gas wood splitter.

Think about the home pressure washer that you use to clean your driveway or car. If you’re like me the first one you bought was a cheap electric version that wasn’t particularly powerful but it got the job done and it wasn’t very expensive. The pressure hose was short, and you always had to drag a long extension cord around with you. Eventually, you went and bought a brand new gas power washer with maximum pressure ratings and fancy fittings. Sure, it could peel the paint off your neighbor’s car 50 feet away, but it also went through gas like a Hummer. It was also very noisy. To tell you the truth sometimes I wish I had my “cheap” old electric washer back.

OK, back to log splitters. But I think you get the point. Power, size, and fancy features don’t always turn out to be the best machine for your particular style or needs. The same can be said for wood splitters. Sometimes that extra power comes with the downside of extra weight and noise. You want to take your shiny new gas splitter over to your brother-in-laws house and you need to rent a double axle trailer compared to some of the electric models.

Most electric models are quieter than their gas counterparts. They still have hydraulic pistons so the hydraulic pump will make some noise, but you don’t have the 10 hp motor roaring away in the background. Definitely an advantage for the casual handyman, or even for professional use if you’re running one all day long.

One disadvantage of an electric log splitter is that it needs electrical power nearby. If you’re in your backyard or on a farm that’s usually not a problem. If you’re in the back forty you can always bring along a small portable “suitcase” generator. On the other hand, you don’t have to continually stop and fill up the gas tank while your working.

If you’re using an electric splitter in the 4 ton to 20 ton range you can get away with 110 volt power. Once you get into the bigger machines above 20 tons you’ll either need a 30 amp circuit on 110 volts, or you may even need 240 volt power.

Some people claim that electric splitters are safer than gas wood splitters. I’m not so sure about that. In most cases the hydraulic cycle time is similar, so they both have the piston moving at similar speeds. Safety really comes down to operator carelessness, and fundamental machine design. A machine that is designed to have both hands on the controls before it will move forward is definitely safer – regardless of whether the power is electric or gas.

You can buy an electric log splitter as big as 34 tons, so you can have just as much power at your disposal as with any gas log splitter. It really comes down to the type of work you’re going to do, where you’ll be using it most of the time, and your particular style.

How to Maintain and Care For a Washer and Dryer Combo

Published by under Home Appliances

Washer and dryer combo, if the name hasn’t given it away, is a combination of a washing machine and a dryer. This makes up a very convenient laundry machine because the machine will transition into the drying stage once it has finished the washing cycle. You need not baby sit your clothes in the laundry and transfer it into a separate dryer.

There are a lot of advantages to using this washing machine in addition to being more convenient. One is the lessening of mold formation in your clothes. Some of us tend to forget that our laundry is the washer. Since they are not completely dry yet, molds tend to grow in them.

But today, we are going to talk about how best to maintain and care for washer and dryer combo. Here are some of the tips you should do:

1. Only put the right amount of clothes. If the washer can hold 7 kilograms of garments, do not stuff in exactly 7 kilograms of garments. Give it enough room to move around the drum. This will help dissolve detergent better and will help evenly rinse and clean your clothes better.

2. Use a small amount of HE detergent. Washer and dryer combos are more efficient washers. Therefore, they require the use of HE detergent only to reduce suds formation. If you use ordinary detergent, suds will collect in the washer’s drum and might possibly enter the motor. This will then impair its washing and drying functions. According to experts, even half a tablespoon of HE detergent is already enough to clean a full laundry load.

3. Remove lint from the lint filter regularly. Once a week or at least two times a month, pry the lint trap loose and remove the lint trapped in the screen. Clogging of lint can cause washer noise and exhaust failure.

4. Using a shop vacuum, vacuum the dryer exhaust pipes. Remove as much dirt, lint and dust as you can. This will help improve the efficiency of your dryer.

5. Clean your washer at least once a week. Make sure you remove detergent residues, and lime deposits in the washer drum and drain pipes. You might also want to run an empty hot water cycle and add a cup of white vinegar with it every other week to avoid moldy smell.

6. Clean the water filter to help improve water pressure and water flow. Also make sure that there are no kinks in the water hoses.

Tips For Using Rustic Furniture To Make Your Home Look More Appealing

Published by under Interior Decorating

In the world of interior design, rustic décor is one of the most popular styles. This is a décor style that’s warm and inviting, whether you make your home in a densely populated city or a wooded rural area. Nothing creates that comfortable and welcoming feeling quite like a home decorated in rich, warm shades. Those who just adore natural wood are sure to love this style of decorating.

Colors used in rustic décor include shades of forest green, cream, brown tones, and any other rich colors found in nature. Wood is used in walls, floors, ceiling fans, and furniture. Hardwood floors are always beautiful, but they tend to be exquisite in this style. When thrown at the foot of the bed or in front of the sofa, braided accent rugs contribute to the homey, comfortable look and atmosphere.

For the Walls
These days, some types of paneling are outdates, but the wood panels that are applied horizontally are trendy and create an amazing look. Or if you prefer, paint the walls. Just be sure to stick to rustic colors. By painting only a couple of walls, you can add even more interest to the room. For instance, paint one forest green and other in a contrasting rich tan color. Another great rustic touch is a wall tapestry. Look for rich tapestries with scenes of nature, mountainous terrain, and forest landscapes.

Furnishings for the Rustic Home
If you’re looking for the perfect complement for a rustic décor, you can’t go wrong with leather and solid wooden furniture. Any exposed wood on the sofa, love seat, or recliner should match your coffee and end tables. If you’re going to include furniture with fabric, dark green, rust, and creams go beautifully in a plaid or striped pattern. Just remember that with this type of décor you want to stick to colors and textures that mimic nature.

A perfect rustic look for the kitchen includes a long wooden pine or maple table. All you need to do is add a bowl filled with fruit and your dining room table will be complete. When you’re looking for seating, use mismatched wooden chairs or even benches. With this style, the older and more worn the pieces look, the better. You can then accessorize by adding stone and ceramic pots filled with sunflowers or herbs, prancing roosters, and a homey rug for the sink area.

Don’t Forget to Accessorize
When it comes down to accessories, you’ll want items that have an antique or worn look. Once again, leather and wood make perfect accents, keeping the natural theme flowing throughout your home. A perfect addition to a living room or bedroom might be a distressed wooden trunk or an antique-style mirror. A great place to find a mirror is a flea market. Even if they contain a few dings, it just adds to the rustic appeal.

Rustic décor is all about warmth, security, and family. With a rustic décor, you are creating comfortable, inviting spaces in your home, no matter where you reside. A home should make you feel warm, comfortable, and secure at the end of the day. You won’t find a home quite as welcoming and beautiful as one decorated in the rustic style. Country or city—it doesn’t matter. This is one style you will truly fall in love with.
