The Evolution of Home Automation Part 2 – Home Entertainment

Published by under Electrical

Now that we have laid a foundation of home automation (HA) lets discuss its advances. Electricity is no longer an exciting innovation and it is something that we generally take for granted. It is also hard to be enthusiastic about using a record player or even the telephone because by today’s standards they are relics of the past. So what did the people of the early to mid-Twentieth Century consider modernizations? For the second part of the Evolution of Home Automation series we will discuss the advances and changes the home went through during this time in Home Automation History.

With the emergence of a new century, home-owners began to demand more from their home. No longer satisfied with a single light bulb hanging in the kitchen or cold running water flowing from the faucet, the American people wanted more. With the growth of the middle and upper class people began to want the latest gadgets and regarded them as status symbols. This new era in home control saw more advancement in entertainment than in practical use. Amid the change in the economic status of the middle class technology was beginning to impress the public with its advances.

The twentieth century was a time of great technological advances and H A was no exception. A significant change in the home came with the introduction of the water heater. Bathing and washing became effortless. These, of course, were luxuries reserved for the upper class but as we have learned, most home automation advances begin as a luxury items and eventually become a necessities. This is the nature of home automation.

More importantly, American’s were interested in entertainment, which was satisfied with the introduction of the television into the home in the late 1920s. Not many families had a television set in the 1920s, but it quickly became a coveted item in the following decades. Not long after the introduction of the family owned television came the introduction of cable TV, bringing more channels into the home. TV had become an even bigger part of home entertainment. Technology was advancing at a rate faster than anyone had seen, but it was no match for the degree in which technology advances today. It wasn’t until the late 1940′s that another invention of entertainment came about: the video game. These games simulated a missile firing at a target, exciting stuff for the 1940′s crowd.

Technology was just beginning to change the lives of families; nothing exemplifies that more than the invention of the TV dinner. The simple convenience of preparing a quick meal to enjoy in front of the television was novel to families of the 1950s. Suddenly their lifestyles were changing according to the technology in their homes. This was just the beginning of transformation the home was about to go through.

The late 50s and 60s brought advancements that would have a tremendous effect on not only the home but our lives. The computer, probably the most significant technological advancement, was in its beginning stages. While these early models weren’t initially in the home their creation paved the way for modern home control. Now think about the exciting advancements yet to come in home automation. That is what we will discuss in the next article in the Evolution of Home Automation series. We have only laid a foundation for the home automation industry. This early era of home automation paved the way for all the modern conveniences that we enjoy today.

How to Choose the Right TV Wall Mount

Published by under Audio & Video

Purchased a new televisions set? Want to invest in a wall mount but not sure which one would be perfect for you? People are often confused about the type of products they should invest in because of so many available choices. A Sanus wall mount is worth looking at if you are in search of durable and stylish types that have the capacity to hold your heavy electronic items. Choosing the right Sanus wall mount seems like an easy task but requires you to keep in mind few essential factors.

In order to select the right holding option you should firstly measure the size and weight of your television. Being aware about the weight and size of your electronic item is important. Once you know this you can search for options that are capable of holding the size and weight you require. This will allow you to search for specific types because not all available choices can meet your requirements.

The next thing to consider is the type of holding option you want. You can choose from tilt, swivel, flat and many others. If you have a flat screen television then a flat holding choice would be perfect for you however if you want flexibility and mobility in the wall mount than you should consider swivel and tilt options. The tilt option would allow you to move your television up and down once it is installed on the wall. The swivel option is the most popular one because it not only allows you to move up and down but also horizontally. This option is ideal for people who value watching movies from different angles and want this added feature.

The style, design and color of the item you select are also important factors to consider because you should choose the type that blends well with your room décor and theme. An item that does not match with your theme and decor can impact negatively on the look of the entire room.

Lastly your spending range and budget can greatly influence your purchasing decision. You have to purchase a product that is within your budget and spending range. However no matter how much money you are spending never compromise on quality. Now with online auctions and second hand mounts coming regularly onto the market, you should be able to afford the best quality at a minimum price.

Deciding What Colors to Use For Each of Your Rooms

Published by under Interior Decorating

If you are a creative person and also want to save some money by decorating the house all by yourself, here are some tips used by professional interior designers; colors can change your mood, therefore you should choose the proper shade for the best comfort in each room of your house. Even if it’s the easiest to change and the least expensive element of the decoration, the color choice is the most important, as it sets the tone of the entire place.

For the bedroom, you want to get an atmosphere of calm and serenity, induced by soft colors like light blue, violet or green. Generally, these receding colors create the impression of wide space, that’s why they would make a good choice for any small room of the house. When repainting an open, shared space, like the living room, a neutral shade that would please everybody is the perfect choice. Hues of beige or brown create a cozy atmosphere in the room where family meetings take place.

For playrooms, you need to use warm, vibrant colors, like yellow or orange, which can bring positive energy to the space. Children’s room can be decorated with age-appropriate themes and their favorite colors in order to create a beautiful personalized space. Whether it’s a boy’s or a girl’s room, it should have the appropriate furniture and a matching carpet too.

The kitchen is the place where we want to spend an enjoyable time with our family. There are various color schemes and ideas to create a pleasing atmosphere for eating and chatting. Earthy tones which beautifully harmonize with each other are also perfect for kitchens, entrances, halls.

Whatever color scheme you may choose for your house, make sure you buy the right paint for good results. Use special interior paint for interior surfaces and exterior paint for outer surfaces. Interior paint dries more rapidly and has less offensive wall odor than exterior paint, which dries more slowly.

Those who cannot stand the stubborn wall odor that lingers for weeks after redecorating the house can choose the odorless paint which virtually leaves no wall odor behind, giving durable results on all surfaces. If a speedy job is essential for your house and ventilation isn’t very good, odorless paint is all the more advisable.

Don’t get used with the Wall Odour; change your home using Crown’s wide range of colors and ideas.

Imagine Redecorating a Sea Going Ship

Published by under Remodeling

Redecorating a home is not easy, but redecorating a sea-going naval ship offers many more challenges. Due to the rigors of ocean life, including salt in the air and water, wall coatings have to be washable and tough as nails. Most furnishings on a ship should not have porous surfaces, but where they are used they must be abrasion-resistant and easy to clean. When repairs are done to the interior or exterior, all rust must be removed completely by sandblasting before the new paint can be applied.

These challenges and many more are encountered when an aircraft carrier or destroyer comes in to port for extended maintenance. Even for smaller boats, many of the same principles hold true. Most surfaces on sea-going naval ships are metal. The first step in freshening the paint scheme on a ship is to grind away any corrosion by sandblasting.

Repairs are then completed by welders, then primers and paints are applied by industrial painters. Many furnishings on a ship are built-in or attached to walls, so that rough weather does not cause the secured items to move about. The best storage method on a ship is a hook or fastener built inside a cabinet or locker that is bolted to the wall. Bins that are attached to the walls are also handy. When a ship is remodeled, it takes a great deal of work just to unbolt these built-in items and check for damage behind them.

A vessel with hundreds of rooms, such as an aircraft carrier or cruise ship, may have some items that are standard in each room, but some rooms are always slightly offset or curved to reflect the outer shape of the boat. Even some furniture, like tables, are often bolted to the floor. A thorough ship remodel involves removing those bolts, inspecting the underlying floor for damage, then replacing the item with a newer model. Whereas you might layer new materials over a damaged spot in a residential project, a boat is different because its walls and floors need to be seaworthy.

What makes the space on a ship more enjoyable to its crew and guests is the adaptability of the furnishings. The beds in some quarters are actually shelves that fold out from the wall, with safety belts in case of bad weather. Like a very durable Murphy bed, these can be snapped to a closed position during the day to save space. A remodeling job on a ship will involve ripping out hundreds of shelf-beds, replacing the hardware that allows them to swing in and out, and installing new ones that fit exactly into that space.

The movable surfaces that were chairs earlier become a bed when the time comes around for sleep, whenever that time may be. The chair cushion that becomes a mattress needs to have abrasion-rated upholstery, with a waterproof layer underneath. You can still have a curtain or shutter that matches your upholstery, tying the room together for a stylish look. Some cabins have carpet, but it gets shampooed more often than a carpet at a house. Even seasoned sailors and crewmen get seasick, so there are many reasons for having durable and washable surfaces.

There is a chance to pick fabric coverings in the process of painting a ship. Ships usually have many storage bins that also serve as benches, so rectangular cushions are almost everywhere. Some of those are also flotation devices in case of emergency. You might say that most items on a ship serve at least two purposes, like a James Bond pen that is also a gun.

Emergency equipment has to be stowed somewhere, and must be accessible in a hurry. However the bins for storage can be used as tables or seats when the lids are not open. A lot of furnishings, like small tables, fold out from the wall and fold back in when you need the space for something else. Keeping each room as adaptable as possible adds to the comfort of the crew and passengers. One way to update a ship is to add more of these movable but built-in features, so that each space on board becomes more useful.

Purchase Tips For Residential Aluminum Fence

Published by under Landscaping

If you’re a home owner with a wooden fence you have probably noticed that they require a lot of maintenance. Either you’re replacing individual pickets or you’re repainting the whole fence because the paint has been weather damaged and is peeling or chipping. This is part of owning a wooden fence and, although they look beautiful once they’re complete, it’s a common thing for long-term home owners to skip this type of fence entirely and opt-in for a longer-lasting material that requires less maintenance; Aluminum.

The only truly difficult thing for an ex-wood fence owner to get used to when installing residential aluminum fence is that, unlike wood, aluminum has absolutely no give. You no longer have the luxury of being able to just manipulate the material if your measurements are incorrect. Aluminum requires you to invest time and attention into the entire planning process, it’s not difficult but does involve a lot a great deal of measuring and double-checking.

Before you start planning your perimeter, look around and find an aluminum fence dealer. Be aware that a lot of dealers offer to ship your product “free of charge”; don’t be fooled. It’s not free of charge. If the dealer insists that it is free of charge, ask for an invoice with and without the shipping calculated. It’s not free. Arrange your own shipping. It’s not difficult, there are plenty of online freight quote websites that can do the job in no-time (and for much less). Also, to really take advantage of the reliability and durability of aluminum, make sure you find a dealer who offers powder coating.

Once you have found a dealer, make sure you have the exact measurements of each length of fence. Often you’ll find that dealers offer fence sections in 7 or 8 foot lengths. Measure the perimeter of your property, marking each post location with a stake and tying a string between them (to ensure a straight line). You may come to a point where your fence section will be too long, you can either shave your fence sections yourself (if you know how), or talk to your dealer about a modified piece before you place your order.

This is important, pay attention to all of the measurements for your fence; posts, gates, corner posts, and fence sections. Draw it all out and make sure everything makes sense before you ever start installing your residential aluminum fence. Take a little time here will save you a lot later on.

Update Your Kitchen Cabinets

Published by under Kitchen Remodeling

Kitchen cabinets are one of those things that can be expensive to replace, or sometimes you simply want to hang on to them. If you have older kitchen cabinets that you want to look a whole lot nicer, there are several ways to update them to fit the style of your kitchen décor. Here are some great decorating options with which to update your kitchen cabinets that don’t cost a lot in terms of time or money.

Add New Hardware to the Kitchen Cabinets
Installing new hardware to your kitchen cabinets is a very simple and inexpensive way to update your décor. You can really change the look of a cabinet with new pulls or handles. The best part is, cabinet hardware doesn’t cost much and may only take an hour or so to install. To really spruce up your cabinets and add a creative touch, see if you can find some unique handmade or hand-painted cabinet pulls.

Paint the Kitchen Cabinets
Painting your kitchen cabinets is usually easier than you think it’s going to be. Depending on the style and color of your old cabinets, it may not even be necessary to sand them before painting. The easiest way to paint cabinets is to remove the doors and paint them on a flat surface. This way you’ll get the best possible coverage.

If you’re looking to completely change the look of the room, go with an entirely new color. For instance, if you have a country kitchen that you want to turn modern, painting the cabinets will help you accomplish this. This type of painting project usually takes a weekend, leaving you with a kitchen that looks brand-new come Monday morning.

Take the Doors Off the Cabinets
Taking the doors off some of your cabinets is another quick way to update your kitchen. You can use this space to show off what’s inside those cabinets or showcase a collection that enhances your kitchen’s theme or style. You don’t have to take off every cabinet door; even just two open cabinets can change the entire look of the kitchen. Before you remove the doors, however, be sure that you are committed to keeping the inside of those cabinets clean and organized, and are comfortable displaying the items inside. You can create a wonderful display with antique china, for instance, whereas a collection of plastic cups might not be so attractive.

Replace the Cabinet Doors
A great way to update your kitchen and have cabinets that fit with the style you’re going for is to replace your kitchen cabinet doors. When it comes to kitchen cabinet doors, you have plenty of different options. There are cabinet doors with ready-made designs already built into them as well as ones with windows. If you’re going to replace your cabinet doors, you want a cabinet door that matches the theme and style of your kitchen. This will make the cabinets cohesive with the rest of the room. Be sure to measure your cabinets properly before selecting your doors, as this will ensure that they will fit.

If you’re looking to take your kitchen from old to stylish and new, try one or more of these ideas for updating your kitchen cabinets. While none of these renovations will cost you thousands of dollars, they can all drastically change the look of the room. Once you decide which option will work best for your cabinets and your kitchen, you can start updating your look.

The Basics of Mowing the Perfect Lawn

Published by under Landscaping

The look of a perfect lawn is a thing to behold. The perfect lines, the perfect edges, the entire effect can add to the enjoyment of your yard and home. Mowing that perfect lawn takes a little bit of practice and trial and error though.

Below are a few tips to help you begin mowing the perfect lawn now:

Sharpen those blades!

When mower blades get dull, the effect they produce can be easily noticeable. The blades leave the grass length looking chopped and uneven. Making sure your blades are super sharp before mowing will help to ensure an even, tight look to the entire yard.

Don’t go too short

Even if it has been awhile since the yard has been mowed, you only want to aim for taking off about 1/3 of the current height of the grass. Cutting off more can actually shock the grass and cause it to turn an unsightly brown. If the grass is really high, mow it once, then wait a few days and mow again to your desired height.

Mow outside edge first

By starting with the outside edges of your lawn, you can take time to mow around things such as flowerbeds and driveways and take your time in doing so. Now that you have established this perimeter, mowing the inside grass area will be easier to focus on and allow you to keep to a specific pattern more easily.

Mow long end to end

One of the easiest ways to produce a striking end result to your mowing efforts is to mow long stripes in the yard. This helps to visually elongate the area and is very appealing to the eye. Simply mow straight lines long end to end to produce this neat and professional looking effect.

Trim and edge as a final step

After all the grass has been mowed, trim and edge the outside perimeter as a final step to put that perfect touch on your well cared for lawn.

Following the steps above and taking your time in doing so can help you achieve your goal of mowing that perfect lawn every time.

No Substitute For a Qualified Electrician

Published by under Electrical

Homeowners should always ensure that they hire a qualified electrician who has passed the necessary electrical courses, according to the Electrical Contractors Association (ECA).

David Pollock, ECA Group chief executive officer, has advised people to follow a list of guidelines before employing an electrician to undertake electrical work in their homes.

Homeowners should not pick the first contractor they see advertised. They should investigate at least two companies to compare costs and services instead.

It is crucial to check that electricians have professional memberships as work carried out by a trade association member, who has completed recognised electrical courses, may be guaranteed, which gives a homeowner added security.

Homeowners should always meet the person who will be working on their property in person before they hire them to ensure the contractor they hire is insured for any damage, death or personal injury.

It is important to ask for references as a quality contractor will be more than happy to give examples of other work they have done in the area and let people speak to previous customers.

All homeowners should be aware that electricians who carry out domestic installation work should have completed Part P courses in order that they understand the appropriate building regulations.

People who have passed electrical courses may want to brush up on their Ps and Qs as a nationwide survey has revealed that good manners are top of the list for householders picking a tradesman.

The ECA found that 78 per cent of homeowners said that after a good price and strong reputation, a polite tradesman would get their vote. Furthermore, 56 per cent valued clean clothes, 28 per cent appreciated a smart van and 26 per cent prized a smart uniform.

David Pollock said: “While it may be tempting to choose a tradesman because of a neat and tidy appearance and a polite personality, that doesn’t necessarily mean they will do a good job. There’s no substitute for hiring someone with experience who comes recommended.

“My advice is to ask friends and neighbours to recommend tradesmen they have used before and then get a range of quotes. Basically don’t just jump at the first quote you get. A busy tradesman is usually busy for a reason and it may be worth waiting.”

To start on the path to becoming a fully qualified electrician a person will need to undertake the City & Guilds (2330) Technical Certificate in Electrotechnical Technology levels 2 and 3 electrical courses.

Able Skills provides electrical courses and 17th edition courses at its dedicated training centre. Able Skills is an accredited centre securing approval to deliver qualification training from City & Guilds, Construction Awards Alliance, EAL, NICEIC and CITB for gas training and assessment.
