Home Theater Projectors – The Full Home-Theater Experience at an Affordable Price

Published by under Audio & Video

With home theater projectors, setting up your personal little cinema has become really simple and inexpensive. There are many models to choose from, and they vary in both cost and functionality. Most of them can take inputs from both your PC and other video sources, such as a DVD player or a game console. However, most of them are either optimized for computer use or for home theater; very few models are good at both. To ensure you decide on the right projector for your needs, there are some things you should remember.

The first one is resolution. Most common home theater projects have a resolution of 720p or 1080p. The higher the resolution, the more pixels are displayed, which makes the image sharper. High resolutions also work on HD sources, such as Blu-rays, Sky HD and PS3. There are still some projectors with a resolution of 480p. However, at least 720p are needed for a home theater projectors. These are still very inexpensive, and 480p projectors have become very rare. Picture quality also varies upon what you are watching. A low signal in your projector will cause lower quality, particularly if you are using a large screen.

The contrast ratio is also significant. This ratio expresses the difference between white and black sections within the picture. For example, a ratio of 1000:1 indicates that the deepest black is 1000 times deeper than the brightest white. Projectors with a greater difference between the brightest white and the darkest black provide clearer images. One might ask why should there be any brightness at all in black. That’s because all projectors have what is called brightness leakage. More complex projectors have a lower leakage and therefore the contrast ratio is higher. The newest models have a contrast ratio of up to 200,000:1, which means they can display really dark black.

Another thing you should take into account is brightness. Home theater projectors’ brightness varies between 1000 and 2500 lumens. Selecting the most suitable brightness also depends on how much you can decrease ambient light that hits the screen. If you know you are not going to use blinds or something else to decrease the degree of light coming from outside, you should choose higher lumen projectors. For low ambient light environments, projector brightness should be somwhere between 1200 and 1600. If you have controlled lighting, anything above 1000 lumens is good enough.

The two types of home theater projectors that you can choose from DLP (digital light processing) and LCD (liquid crystal display). While there have been long discussions about which of them is better, they have both advanced a lot along the years and the gap between them is now rather low. LCD projectors produced by large manufacturers such as Hitachi, Epson and Sanyo have the advantage of being cheaper.

Apart from the projector itself, you also need a projector screen. When shopping for one, remember that the screen’s aspect ratio has to fit the one of the projector. An aspect ratio of 16:9 for both the projector and the screen is a popular selection among home theater users. You also need to set up sound sources in case the projector does not have built-in speakers. Sound systems can range from simple stereo amplifiers to multi-channel audio-video receivers.

The John Deere X304 Lawn Tractor

Published by under Yard Equipment

The leading model in the John Deere X300 series of lawn tractors is undoubtedly the John Deere X304.

Of course, judging whether a particular lawn tractor or riding lawn mower can be considered to be the number one is not straightforward because, to a large extent, whether it will be good for the end-user depends upon what that user needs the machine to do. With John Deere lawn tractors it is even harder because there is a huge range and, not unsurprisingly, they are all designed to meet slightly different needs.

Therefore whilst it looks like I’m under-playing it by stating only that the John Deere X304 is the stand out in the X300 series, there is good reason for that. Because if you’ve got 5 acres of hilly and undulating ground to cut, this will probably not be the best lawn tractor for the job.

But, if you have two acres or so and you need to cut round trees, garden beds or other features, the John Deere X304 really is a star. And you don’t have to take my word for it, Consumer-reports.org went a lot further than me. They rated it as the best lawn tractor amongst those produced by a range of manufacturers in a recent survey.

The key to the success of the John Deere X304 is really its general usability.

It’s rugged enough to be considered a true lawn tractor and to handle the many attachments and accessories available for it. But it is modern enough to meet most international emission standards.

Thanks to its 4 wheel steer capability, the X304 is almost as agile and manoeuverable as a zero turn mower. But its tractor design means it can still operate on challenging ground.

As far as mowing is concerned, the X304 is well equipped for the job. Its 42 inch steel cutting deck can discharge clippings to the side or be converted to mulching or bagging operations, whilst the height of the deck can be adjusted to give the cut that you want.

This then is lawn tractor worth investigating if you are looking for quality, versatility and all round effectiveness.

An Inexpensive Drawer Pull Kitchen Upgrade

Published by under Cabinets

One day I looked at my kitchen cabinets and noticed something that bothered me. The cabinets still looked solid and attractive, but the stain on the edges of the doors and drawers (the ones that I used the most) had started to fade. I realized, because I never picked out a drawer pull for the doors and drawers in my kitchen, the finish on my cabinets was starting to show wear. It was time to do something about it.

Rather than damaging my cabinets any longer, I headed off to my neighborhood home improvement store to find the perfect drawer pull. Even though I was making a small purchase relative to everything I put into my house, I knew I would be spending a few hundred dollars when I finally selected the drawer pull for my kitchen.

I have traditional cabinets, with decorative rope trim and crown molding on the top of the wall cabinets. But my design sense drew me to something a little unusual. My kitchen has a transitional-style backsplash-subway tiles with a coordinating stone and garnet mosaic border-and granite countertops in earth tones and black accents. I knew I was looking for a drawer pull that was a knob with a single post, rather than a handle with two posts. This choice meant I would have fewer holes to drill and fewer opportunities to make a drilling mistake.

To keep my costs down, I was looking for an in-stock drawer pull, not a special order. I stood in front of the wall of bins filled with knobs and handles, and I realized my decision would not be difficult. Don’t get me wrong-I had plenty of options. But because I considered them ahead of time, I was able to zero in on several possibilities. I wanted a drawer pull with a traditional finish, one that would blend in well with the cherry stain of my cabinets.

I ended up selecting a round pewter and black enamel drawer pull; the face of the knob was decorated with a finely-engraved sunburst design. The pewter finish was traditional, the design on the surface made it a little decorative, and the enamel picked up the black in my granite countertops. Best of all, my selection was reasonably priced, and the store had the 38 knobs I needed in stock. I was ready for my small-scale home improvement project.

Before I left the home-improvement store, I made another smart purchase-a template for installing drawer pulls. Using a template made placing the hole for the drawer pull easy. I found that the best place to install the drawer pull was not in the exact center of the drawer face. It looked better installed just a bit above the center line.

When I got the hardware home, I still hesitated when it was time to put the drill to my kitchen cabinets. I didn’t want to mess up the doors and drawers. A few rules of thumb helped avoid this from happening. To make the proper size hole, make sure you use a drill bit that makes a hole just a little smaller than the bolt provided with the drawer pull. This way, the bolt will screw in snugly and keep the drawer pull from spinning after it’s been installed. Placing a piece of painter’s tape over the spot where I placed the hole helped avoid splintering the finish when I drilled.

Whenever I look at my cabinets, I’m satisfied that I was able to handle this mini-kitchen redo competently and with style. Now, it’s time to take on the bathrooms…

Plan Carefully The Types Of Tiles You Need For Your Home

Published by under Interior Decorating

Before you make an aesthetic choice regarding the color, shape and placement of the tiles you are to use in your home, it is a must to know at least the fundamentals about the types of tiles existing on the market and about their basic properties.

When speaking about types of tiles, we have to use a strict criterion for classifying them: the constructive criterion, that is, how or what they are made of, indicating us their durability, so that to be able to match them to the traffic, heat or water they can bear without deteriorating. According to this criterion, without going into further detail given that the resulting properties are the ones you should be interested in, tiles are ceramic, quarry and stone.

What is good about the ceramic tiles is that they come in a wide range of colors and shapes, being able to meet virtually everyone’s tastes and homes. Another advantage of the ceramic tiles is that they are cheap, resistant, don’t stain easily and are also fireproof. They are not ‘pretentious’ either: anyone can install them with a minimum training. Porcelain tiles, a variety of ceramic tiles, are almost waterproof, which make them ideal for swimming pools and bathrooms. Though those used for homes are usually glazed, they may be made anti-skid to be fit for floors as well. They have a modern look, are easy to maintain and, although ‘cold’, in tropical climates people use them for floors even in living rooms or bedrooms.

As far as quarry tiles are concerned, they seem ideal for flooring, having two qualities to this effect: they are basically non-slip, and you’ll not see them worn out. The disadvantages are their limited color range and the fact they are very porous, a property that limits their use. But, on the other hand, they are ideal for floors due to their anti-skid property and their resistance to wear.

Stone tiles are usually preferred for their durability, easy maintenance and last but not least their look, both in terms of color and texture. On the other hand, they crack easily and can be as easily scratched. At the same time, granite tiles for instance can be very expensive, and are limited to earth nuances. Marble though comes in a variety of colors and textures. Thanks to its extraordinary luster and capacity for reflecting light is unequalled in dining rooms or where a luxurious style is desired. And its durability is as unparalleled: for example, the ancient theater Aspendos, still used nowadays, is made of cappuccino marble. Its beige and honey tones imprint class and elegance. And it stands as well a more ‘modest’ use such as for floors or walls in bathrooms, for counter tops or fireplace surrounds. Its light brown cozy hue will help you to enjoy your coffee.

The beautiful luxurious beige and honey tones make these classic cappuccino marble tiles ideal for owners that like to create a warm feeling in their home.

Why Homeowners Should Consider Fibreglass Roofing This Autumn

Published by under Roofing

With the summer now already little more than a memory, and damp autumn days well on the way, it’s a good idea to start thinking about the advantages of fibreglass roofing in places such as porches, car bays, sheds and garages. In fact GRP roofing is ideal for extensions, shelters, canopies and flat roofing where traditionally you may have a roof constructed of a wooden frame with either tiles or felt roofing providing protection.

Because we haven’t had an enormous amount of rain during the summer most flat roofs have had little to content with. But as the weather forecasts suggest that we could be in for a very wet autumn, not to mention winter, those flat roofs and roofs of sheds and porches are likely to be in for something of a hammering.

Fibreglass roofing provides an affordable alternative that can either be fitted over the existing roof, or used as a complete replacement to the existing roof, providing the level of protection necessary to deal with the wet weather. In the UK felt roofing is far from ideal, because of the amount of rain we get it is invariably the case that flat roofs which had been covered with felt roofing will start to warp and buckle, resulting in pooling of water.

If you have an extension with a flat roof, or a porch with a flat roof, you may well have noticed last winter and during the early spring that there were often puddles gathering somewhere on the roof. Even if you look out now the chances are high that you will moss growing where those bubbles gathered. But of course the problem only ever gets worse, because as soon as you have water gathering on a flat roof, the weight of that water increases the pressure on the felt roofing, causing it to stretch and expand and distort even more.

This results in more water being able to pool and gather, until eventually the felt roofing simply tears or cracks, instantly allowing water to enter the roof cavity. As soon as this happens the wooden beams or wooden framework quickly absorb the water and begin expanding, warping, twisting and distorting. If you let a roof gets to this stage then it is only a matter of time before you start finding mildew reaching through to the interior of the house, along with all the moisture, spores and health problems which that introduces.

Only quite recently there were two highlighted cases in the media of people dying as a direct result of moisture seeping in through a flat roof resulting in spores growing on the interior walls. It’s more than just a wallpaper problem, it’s a serious health hazard.

But because fibreglass roofing is completely waterproof, and because GRP roofing is fitted in such a way that prevents any water from having any chance at all of either seeping through seams or pooling, you can be confident that not only is your home protected, but so is your family.

Today fibreglass roofing is available in a wide range of colours and styles, many of which can provide a look which is indistinguishable from traditional roofing such as tiles or even lead roofing. This means that whether you have a new property or an older property, there is bound to be a type of GRP roofing which is able to provide an attractive and sympathetic visual appearance whilst also providing the protection which all flat rooms need in order to cope with the water that is undoubtedly on its way this autumn.

Not only is fibreglass roofing the most affordable form of roofing there is, it is 100% waterproof, and virtually maintenance free. Fibreglass roofing and GRP roofing will also last a very great deal longer than either tiles or felt roofing will, provided the ideal solution for any home in the UK that doesn’t have a 50 foot umbrella attached to the chimney.

5 Essential Tools Needed For DIY Tiling

Published by under Remodeling

Are you planning to lay tiles in a bathroom? Besides the tiles themselves, it’s also crucial that you have the right tools. Here are some of the most significant ones:

1. Grout Float

This tool contains a piece of metal that’s rectangular and flat. It also includes a handle on top. The Grout Float is used during one of the last steps of installing tiles. When installing tiles, it’s advisable that you use a rubber Grout Float.

2. Putty Knife

This instrument is used for a variety of DIY jobs, such as laying bathroom tiles. It’s also referred to as a taping knife. Putty knives are available in different thicknesses. Their thicknesses make them ideal for either scraping or spreading. Another factor to consider when choosing a Putty Knife is how wide the knife is.

3. Pry Bar

This is a basic metal bar used, as you might guess, to create leverage on different items. It’s instrumental when you need a tool to remove tiles from a bathroom floor. Typically a Pry Bar is made using either steel or titanium.

4. Tile Saw

This tool is used to cut tiles so they’ll be the exact shape that you need. They’re available in manual and powered versions. If you want to save money then you should consider a manual Tile Saw. These are also available in different grades, so it’s crucial to determine which one would be proper for your laying of bathroom tiles.

5. Trowel

This is a hand tool that’s instrumental for various tasks, such as laying bathroom tiles. While there are gardening trowels, you’ll need to use a bricklayer’s trowel. The latter is also known as a pointing trowel. The tool has a blade that’s flat and metal, and a handle. Trowels are used for leveling and spreading materials such as plaster, mortar, and cement.

It’s also important to note that all of these tools are available in different grades. So if you might use the materials for multiple DIY jobs, then consider buying a higher grade. If you do several DIY projects around the house then it might be worthwhile investing in high-end tools.

Why Choose A Legitimate Cleaning Service?

Published by under Cleaning Tips

The 20th century has brought not only state-of-the-art technology but also tremendous demands to our jobs, lifestyle and home management. Utility services catering to various needs from clogged toilet bowls to over-heated car radiators have come-up like mushrooms. Various problems were given solutions in a snap. Hundreds of training schools for different fields are rising due to the increasing demands in professional services that only trained individuals are capable of rendering. In one click of the mouse or one call, the answer is readily available.

After a long day’s work, all we just want is to sit down, read a good book or watch a favorite television show, a glass of coffee or tea, and be pampered. We want to party with friends and relatives and catch- up with the latest activities in their lives but we are stuck-up with our laundry. We want to go out and watch a movie of our favorite actor but we still need to cook dinner. But how can we do this if we leave alone or everybody is just as preoccupied?

The answer to our questions is to hire a part-time or full-time house help that will do the job for us while we indulge ourselves to a much needed time to unwind and relax. Even though we are away, we are guaranteed of the best service that we deserve.

But how can we have a peace of mind knowing that our home is in somebody’s hand whom we barely know? Are they trustworthy and efficient? Do we get the value for our money? We have so many concerns that no single solution is applicable but the only solution with regards to house help is that we have to hire a legitimate help from a legitimate agency. From them, we get a lot of benefits that we do not ordinarily get from fly-by-night individuals.

First, we are assured of an efficient result because they are highly trained in their field of specialization such that their attention to details is highly developed, thus our satisfaction is guaranteed. Another is that, they are insured and bound to the agency who trained them that in any event that an assigned cleaner fails to be available in a given schedule, a replacement is readily available to cover.

While we are away, we are insured that our valuables and priced possessions are safe because their backgrounds have been meticulously verified by the owner of the agency who hired them, aside from the fact that they have an existing bond.

Most importantly, we are given the chance not only to relax and pamper ourselves after a stressful day but we benefit the most from the time that we spend with our family and friends instead of doing the usual household chores.

Hiring a house help is a personal choice and greatly influenced by cultural heritage. But with the current demands that each of individual encounters, cleaning services in St Louis have sprung like weeds. To get more idea regarding house cleaning services St Louis information is widely available.

Hand Painted Furniture – Proper Sanding for Beautiful Results

Published by under Painting

When I start to create a decorative piece of hand painted furniture, the first question I ask myself is am I going to stain it or paint it? If I’m starting with a piece of new unfinished furniture that has a beautiful wood grain, staining is an excellent option. Staining wood allows the grain to show through and provides additional color and protection for the wood. In order to create a very decorative, colorful, unique piece of hand painted furniture, I may choose to paint the furniture instead of staining it.

In either case, the first and probably most important step is to prepare the wood to take the finish. Whether you are painting or staining the wood, you will want to sand the furniture until the surface is smooth and ready to accept the paint or stain. Always sand in the direction of the grain. I like to use a 220-grit sanding sponge on unfinished wood and follow that up with 320 and finally, a micro sanding grit that really makes the wood satiny smooth to the touch. Once the sanding is finished, you need to vacuum up the sanding dust with a clean brush attachment and then wipe with a lint free soft cloth or brush the surface with a soft brush to eliminate any debris without damaging the wood pores. I don’t recommend using a tack rag because even though it may collect all of the sanding dust, it can interfere with some water based stains or finishes. As long as you’re using an oil based stain, you can use a tack rag if you do it gently so that you don’t damage the wood pores. Now you are ready to either paint or stain.

When you paint a piece of furniture, you will first apply a good wood primer. Valspar makes an excellent wood primer for furniture (Valspar Enamel Undercoater). It dries quickly and sands easily. Did you think you were finished sanding? Not if you want a good finish. After the primer dries, you will notice some rough spots in the wood that the primer has raised. You will want to use a very fine grit to sand these spots smooth. I prefer micro sanding sponges for this step. When all the rough spots have been sanded away, you are now ready to paint. I suggest a good latex paint that takes about 2-4 hours to dry. Most colors require at least two coats of paint on top of the primer to achieve the color you are expecting.

If you are staining the furniture, select a stain that will enhance the grain of the wood. I like to use an oil-based gel stain. It goes on easily with a chip brush or lint free rag, and then you wipe it off gently with a soft lint free cloth so that the wood doesn’t appear wet but only colored. Unlike paint, oil based stain takes much longer to dry, and if you want a darker stain, you need to wait about 24 hours before applying another coat. For many stains, one coat is sufficient.

The last step to achieving beautiful results is to finish the piece with a satin, a semi-gloss or gloss polyurethane. If you used oil-based stain, you should use an oil-based polyurethane. I use a gel poly over the oil-based gel stain and I usually apply three coats. If you have painted the piece of furniture, you still need to finish it with a poly for lasting protection and years of use. The difference is, you must wait about three weeks to let the paint cure before applying the poly. My favorite topcoat for paint is called Minwax Polycrylic Protective Finish. Polycrylic is a waterbased topcoat that results in a beautiful finish that will not yellow or change the color you have painted the wood.

Finally, the secret to a really beautiful finish, whether you choose satin, semi-gloss or gloss is to gently sand away any rough spots with a micro sanding sponge between each coat of poly. The results will be beautiful!

As a small business owner and crafter, Marilyn Mocker is accomplished in the art of wood finishing and has developed a distinctive style in both staining and painting furniture. She has produced colorful designs, utilizing faux painting as well as traditional staining on the pieces she creates. She considers each piece of furniture a blank canvas and when finished, it is one of a kind, a colorful, functional piece of art. Marilyn creates small colorful and often whimsical stools, table and chair sets and hand painted rocking chairs for children. The pieces she creates are shown and sold at craft shows in Pennsylvania and online at http://www.anglerandsillysalmon.com/index.php?p=page&page_id=Hand-Painted-Furniture.
