Balcony Sliding Doors

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Doors

The vinyl siding installation company was a small business. The owner was actively working and was on-site at the time of the incident. The company had been working at the site since the summer of 2004 and a copy of a formal health and safety program was provided. The employer had not developed a written fall protection plan for work being done at a location where workers are not protected by permanent guardrails, and from which a fall of 25 feet or more may occur. Two months prior to the incident, WorkSafeBC had issued an inspection report to the employer for a violation of workers not wearing adequate fall protection while operating a boom-operated manlift.

After the incident, the employer showed investigators the incident scene and was stopped by the lead investigating officer from proceeding out onto the balcony without having any fall protection in place. There were footprints in the snow along the unguarded edge; the employer admitted they were his, made when he had walked out onto the balcony to view the location where Worker 1 fell from.

Inside the large institutions slide and turn panels were used for the section off areas as needed some owners indicating tinted glass or etched to enhance their decor. Golf clubs and hotels with the monasteries saw the advantage of the surrounding areas to maximize their potential year-round. Glass Curtains can be installed to fit inside the curved arches they can also be installed around the curve of the circular terrace or balcony.

The company acting as prime contractor was responsible for coordination of health and safety activities at the construction project. When the project was started early in 2004, a dedicated safety coordinator was on-site ensuring orientations, safety meetings, site coordination, and inspections were conducted. Written documentation was provided up to the summer of 2004, at which time the safety coordinator was promoted to another position.

The prime contractor did not replace the position of the safety coordinator, and there is no written documentation to show that there was coordination of health and safety activities after his promotion. The prime contractor had not reviewed any fall protection plan with the vinyl siding installation company, although WorkSafeBC had issued an inspection report to the prime contractor for violations referring to site coordination on three occasions within the last five years.

The concept of window blinds have recently been introduced in the UK. Original one pane of tempered glass panels are ideal for internal partitions and commercial purposes but unsuitable as a replacement for patio doors in homes the thermal insulation requirements can not be satisfied with one glass.

Nevertheless there are a number of options for homeowners to consider depending on what aspects of the design appeals to them.

Bifolding doors offer good views and turn to the side wall or walls for full access. Door frame to determine how well the point of view may be. For example a cheap plastic frames are quite wide in order to provide some strength better plastic reinforced with metal but more than wood which in turn is broader than aluminum (usually 60 mm).

Narrower still are under 20mm Slimline doors new to the market. They are based on a slide and turn the concept of window blinds. Slimline windows mentioned above have been developed in Spain specifically for the UK market. All panels can stack in the direction of opening or can be arranged at the opening to leave gaps between the glass panels. The gaps may be wide enough to pass or small enough to keep kids or pets Out.

It can be argued that the bonus installation of this system is fun to be different. Bifolding doors have become popular over the last two or three years but they have been available for about ten years – major purchases are not made too often such growth industries such relatively slowly. This new system has just become available and will probably be installed in less than 200 properties this year.

Double glazed thermally compatible glass door curtains that look like thin profiles of double-glazed windows – but frameless – available for order in anticipation of testing and approval of suitability as an exterior door. Testing and approval necessary for homeowners who have installed according to building standards as well as energy cost savings.

How to Fix a Warped Door

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Doors

A warp in a door does not develop overnight – it happens gradually, so the sooner you notice, the easier it is to correct. The first real sign may be the door not closing properly, or the lock failing to work.

Doors made from badly seasoned timber are particularly prone to warping, though once you have corrected the warp it is unlikely to return. However, in some instances the warping is caused by outside factors – such as a radiator sited too close to the door, or bad ventilation. If you suspect that this is the case, take steps to deal with the external problems or the warp may recur.

If the warp is not too severe, there are several ways of forcing the door against the twist. Some of these, however, require the door to be kept shut and in many cases this is not convenient.

If you can keep the door shut, wedging it shut against the warp for a few days may well prove to be effective.

  1. To do this, look along the door to check the extent of the warp. Then, with the door just touching the doorstop, measure the gap between the door and stop at the widest point and cut a wooden block slightly larger than this gap.
  2. Fit the block at the point where the door and stop shut, so that it touches the stop at top and bottom. If leaving the door shut isn’t possible, you can either try altering the position of the hinge on the door frame to take up the twist (see diagram), or else alter the doorstop. How you do this depends on whether you have a stop which is a separate piece of wood nailed on (planted) or one cut out of the wood of the door frame itself (rebated). If you have a planted stop, close the door and cut a block of wood slightly larger than the widest gap.
  3. Run the block down the edge of the door marking the stop with a pencil.
  4. Prise the stop off. Loosen with an old chisel then pull away from the frame with your hands.
  5. Plane the stop then refit it flush with the door.

A rebated stop forms part of the door frame and can’t be removed. Instead you have to add a shaped piece to the stop to fill the gap.

To do this, measure the length of the gap between the door and stop. Then measure the width at the widest point.

Cut a wedge to these dimensions (see diagram) and nail it to the stop at the appropriate point. Once the wedge is in position, trim it again until you get a perfect fit.

The remedies above only work if the door has warped at the top or bottom corner. If it has warped in the centre you will have to cut a curved wedge tapered at both ends.

Another way to deal with this problem, if you can remove the door, is to try laying it flat, supported on two chairs, bowed side up. Place some heavy weights on top and leave it for a few days.

Doorknob – An Essential Part of Tot Proofing Your Home

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Doors

If you have a new baby in the house, it’s never too early to start thinking about how to make your home safer.

It will seem like no time at all before that cooing baby is a crawling baby, then a toddling tot. This is when they’re going to start getting in trouble.

Babies are curious by nature. They want to know what everything is, how it works, and how it tastes. When they start gaining mobility this means no cabinet or door in your home is going to be free of their scrutiny, unless you secure them now.

Now is a good time to take an inventory of your house. Think of all the cabinets and doors at the baby’s level. Let’s start in the bathroom. What’s under the sink? Chances are you have cleaning supplies for the toilet and sink, as well as possibly make-up, perfumes, hair sprays, and a number of other chemicals and items that should not be part of a baby’s diet. In the kitchen, you also probably have more cleaning supplies in the cabinet under the sink. The food shelves have more than their fair share of glass bottles and jars that could come tumbling down and break. All of these threats are just inside the house.

Then look outside. While you may say you won’t let your little one get outside, that is exactly the attitude that leads to problems. It takes just seconds for you to turn your back and that small one to have twisted the doorknob and started out into your back yard or towards your pool.

So how do you keep your child from being one of those sad statistics? Start now. In the bathrooms and kitchen you should look for safety latches that can be hooked to the doorknob on a cabinet and keep it closed. These will have to be installed, but it’s relatively easy. Doorknob locks and latches are screwed into the main part of the cabinetry and can be latched around the doorknob to hold it shut when someone pulls on it. There are a number of styles of doorknob locks and latches on the market, and you should choose them carefully. Not all of them are strong enough to hold up against a big tug from a child. Make sure you choose ones that will be durable when a little one, who wants to get in, tugs on the doorknob time and time again.

If it would be better to keep your little one out of an entire room that holds threats, but you can’t lock everyone out, there is also the option of installing doorknob covers. They are literally covers that slip over the door knob, but can be removed by an adult, to keep a child from being able to turn the knob and get in or out. These can also be a useful tool to put on the doors to the outside of your home to keep your child from making his way out.

Internal vs External Doors

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Doors

When you are considering doors, you realize that they are either passageways from one room to another or from the building to the outside. These are internal vs. external doors.

Many people view a door as a door and do not see much difference between internal vs. external doors. In the case of door construction, this basic function difference is all important. The external door is more than just a passageway from one place to another. It is a barrier to intrusion and against the elements. The internal door does little more than provide privacy.

This functional difference dictates the material and construction method of the doors. An external door needs to be made of a sturdy and solid material that can resist the exposure to the outside and also is not easily broken down to provide security. The materials used in the construction of the external door must address all of these concerns and like external windows must all consider insulation and sealing as well.

The external door must not only be of heavier construction, but must also be mounted in a more secure manner. It would not provide much security if it could easily be kicked in or knocked off its hinges. So, not only the materials, but also the mounting must be selected with the function of security in mind. Since the internal door is mostly used for privacy purposes, these factors are not as important. Internal doors are usually of hollowed wooden construction and are mounted on simple door frames.

There are some cases, such as in certain commercial buildings, where an internal door will require external door standards. This is because the function of security is important despite the location of the door. Although the terms external and internal door refer to location, they could also refer to function in this case. The external door is sturdy and solid and provides security. The internal door is light and provides only privacy.

External doors can take many forms from the stately double doors of a large home entry way to the sliding glass doors leading from a downstairs room to the back patio. Despite the form that they take, the main functions of protection, insulation, and a barrier to the outside elements should never be forgotten in the selection process. It is in the internal door that imagination and style can be used. The internal door can become a part of the decorative motif of the internal design since privacy is its major function.

Flush cabinet doors are often seen with butterfly hinges. These cabinet hinges consist of two flaps or leaves with screw holes held together by a pin. They are mounted on the outside of the door and frame and look like a butterfly when open; hence the name. These cabinet hinges are ornamental and can add style to any room form colonial to art deco and beyond. A cabinet hinge similar to this is a butt hinge only the flaps are recessed into the door and frame revealing only the pin when closed. Balls or finials can be added to the pin for decoration. The butt hinge can be used on any door.

Pivot cabinet hinges are made for overlay doors. They are mounted on the bottom and top of the door with portions of each hinge bent over and mounted to the frame and the door resulting in a concealed hinge. They like all cabinet hinges are available in multiple finishes to match you style. One of the most popular types of cabinet hinge is the spring loaded or self – closing hinge.
