			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><P>Crimp terminals, aka lugs, have an important place in anyone&#8217;s workbench. Fortunately, today there is a plentiful supply of quality crimp terminals and tools to use in any connection.</P><br />
<P>Terminals are manufactured in a variety of sizes to accommodate different wire sizes (known as the barrel inner diameter) and stud sizes (the hole).</P><br />
<P>If the terminal connection will be exposed to any vibration, then it is unwise to use a bare terminal. Support the wire close to, but separate from, the wire grip on the conductors. Control the flexing of the conducting strands at the point that they exit the rear of the terminal barrel.</P><br />
<P>The standard technique to add support is this: use a plastic sleeve on top of the terminal barrel &#8211; the length should be long enough to allow a second crimp which would help support the insulation.</P><br />
<P>While it is nice to have a high-end ratchet handle crimping tool, most people can not afford them for everyday crimping. The standard stamped, sheet metal, rivet jointed crimping tool that most everyone owns can be used to make a good connection if you know how. The number one rule: practice!</P><br />
<P>First, strip the outer insulation from the wire so that the ends of wire stranding should just extend out from the stud side of the crimp barrel when the ends are fully seated in the terminal. Next, center the die on the tool over the wire grip section, about 1/3 of way from the stud end to the entry end of sleeve.</P><br />
<P>Apply firm pressure on the grip, but it won&#8217;t take a great effort to achieve results. When you think you&#8217;ve got it right, tug on the wire to replicate 5-10 pounds of pressure for 22AWG wire and up to 20 pounds for 10-12AWG wire.</P><br />
<P>If you don&#8217;t know what an 8 pound pull feels like, you can create a pull test for terminal connection:</P><br />

<LI>Hang the terminal lug on the nail<br />
<LI>Tie a plastic gallon jug of water onto a 22AWG wire (red terminals)<br />

<LI>Tie 3 gallons of water onto a 12AWG wire (yellow terminals)</LI></UL><br />

<P>The second crimp is about 2/3 of the way along the barrel closed just enough to grip the wire&#8217;s insulation which is generally much less pressure than the amount needed to grip the wire. There are some myths out there that suggest that both the wire grip and insulation grips should be put on 90 degrees displaced from each other. This is not necessarily helpful and the technique makes for a nasty looking terminal.</P><br />
<P>Another myth is that a combination of soldering in additional to crimping will create the most reliable joints. If you are using a quality crimp terminal and testing your connection, then soldering should be totally unnecessary.</P><br />

Electricity is no longer an exciting innovation and it is something that we generally take for granted. It is also hard to be enthusiastic about using a record player or even the telephone because by today&#8217;s standards they are relics of the past. So what did the people of the early to mid-Twentieth Century consider modernizations? For the second part of the Evolution of Home Automation series we will discuss the advances and changes the home went through during this time in Home Automation History.</P><br />
<P>With the emergence of a new century, home-owners began to demand more from their home. No longer satisfied with a single light bulb hanging in the kitchen or cold running water flowing from the faucet, the American people wanted more. With the growth of the middle and upper class people began to want the latest gadgets and regarded them as status symbols. This new era in home control saw more advancement in entertainment than in practical use. Amid the change in the economic status of the middle class technology was beginning to impress the public with its advances.</P><br />
<P>The twentieth century was a time of great technological advances and H A was no exception. A significant change in the home came with the introduction of the water heater. Bathing and washing became effortless. These, of course, were luxuries reserved for the upper class but as we have learned, most home automation advances begin as a luxury items and eventually become a necessities. This is the nature of home automation.</P><br />
<P>More importantly, American&#8217;s were interested in entertainment, which was satisfied with the introduction of the television into the home in the late 1920s. Not many families had a television set in the 1920s, but it quickly became a coveted item in the following decades. Not long after the introduction of the family owned television came the introduction of cable TV, bringing more channels into the home. TV had become an even bigger part of home entertainment. Technology was advancing at a rate faster than anyone had seen, but it was no match for the degree in which technology advances today. It wasn&#8217;t until the late 1940&#8242;s that another invention of entertainment came about: the video game. These games simulated a missile firing at a target, exciting stuff for the 1940&#8242;s crowd.</P><br />
<P>Technology was just beginning to change the lives of families; nothing exemplifies that more than the invention of the TV dinner. The simple convenience of preparing a quick meal to enjoy in front of the television was novel to families of the 1950s. Suddenly their lifestyles were changing according to the technology in their homes. This was just the beginning of transformation the home was about to go through.</P><br />
<P>The late 50s and 60s brought advancements that would have a tremendous effect on not only the home but our lives. The computer, probably the most significant technological advancement, was in its beginning stages. While these early models weren&#8217;t initially in the home their creation paved the way for modern home control. Now think about the exciting advancements yet to come in home automation. That is what we will discuss in the next article in the Evolution of Home Automation series. We have only laid a foundation for the home automation industry. This early era of home automation paved the way for all the modern conveniences that we enjoy today.</P><br />

<P>Homeowners should not pick the first contractor they see advertised. They should investigate at least two companies to compare costs and services instead.</P><br />
<P>It is crucial to check that electricians have professional memberships as work carried out by a trade association member, who has completed recognised electrical courses, may be guaranteed, which gives a homeowner added security.</P><br />
<P>Homeowners should always meet the person who will be working on their property in person before they hire them to ensure the contractor they hire is insured for any damage, death or personal injury.</P><br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><P>Light-emitting diodes are inexpensive and cheap to produce. They emit a bright light that, at the same time, doesn&#8217;t get as hot as incandescent lights do. So how is it that these diodes produce light?</P><br />
<P>To break it down initially, light is merely a form of energy that is released by an atom. The energy is made up of small packets that contain energy and momentum, but no mass. They are commonly referred to as photons and are the basic units of light.</P><br />
<P>The photons are freed by moving electrons. On the molecular level, electrons move in different orbitals (s,p,d). These electrons that move in different orbitals all contain differing mounts of energy. Electrons that are further away from the nucleus contain more energy. When an electron drops an orbital, it must release energy. It is this energy that is released in the form of a photon (light).</P><br />
<P>LEDs have the advantage of not having the inside filament burn out, as incandescent lights do. Therefore, their lifespan is much longer. Their small plastic case provides good protection and much more durable. Their small size enables them to fit more easily into modern circuits. However, the biggest advantage would have to lie in the fact that they are very efficient. Older lights would have to heat up the filament, which is a lot of wasted energy. A large portion of the energy is being wasted on heat, and not on the light itself. <p>Today I want to talk about how a wind turbine works. The topic has come up a few times in conversations I&#8217;ve had with other do-it-yourselfers, and the answer to that question is surprisingly simple. Of course the short answer to the question is that a wind turbine works by capturing wind energy and turning it into electricity. From there that electricity is sent by wire to your home, your garage, or your energy storage system (usually batteries).</p>
<p>In reality though we can go much deeper than that without getting too complicated; it&#8217;s all about the physics of capturing the wind. To cover the topic well we need to talk about two elements. First we need to cover how wind energy is captured. From there we need to talk about how that kinetic energy is turned into usable electricity.</p>
<p><strong>How a Wind Turbine Works &#8211; Capturing the Wind</strong></p>
<p>To start out we need to cover one simple idea. A wind turbine captures the forward force of the wind and then uses that force to turn the blades. What&#8217;s really happening here is that we&#8217;re taking the forward momentum of the wind, and turning it into a sideways push to turn the blades. The blade design of your wind turbine is actually what&#8217;s responsible from this transfer of energy. By using a tilted or a curved blade (usually both tilted and curved), the wind is deflected in such a way that the wind pushes it sideways and in turn turns the blade.</p>
<p>Of course we also need to talk about the tailpiece of your turbine. Without one the sideways force exerted by the curve of your blades would turn the entire turbine assemble rather than just the blades. While the wind pushes sideways on your blades to turn then, it&#8217;s also flowing directly allow the tailpiece which keeps the assembly facing the wind and allows your blades to turn freely.</p>
<p><strong>How Wind Turbines Works &#8211; Turning Wind Energy into Electricity</strong></p>
<p>Once we understand the basics of how the wind exerts force to turn the blades, we also need to talk about how the electricity is produced. Behind the blade assembly is a rotor, which is attached to a shaft, which in turn is attached to your wind generator. In most residential applications the wind generator is something as simple as a DC motor.</p>
<p>If you understand the basics of electricity, then you would know that by rotating magnets around a conductor you produce electricity. Essentially this is what a DC motor is. It consists of magnets which are able to rotate around a conductive center. As your turbine blades rotate in the wind the shaft rotates your magnets in your DC motor which produces usable electricity. In a nutshell this is wind turbines work, and although we&#8217;ve only taken a basic look at the physics behind it all, you now have a better understanding of how to capture the wind to power you home.</p></div>
