What’s The Best Type Of Marble For Your Kitchen Floor?

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Flooring

Marble flooring is one of the more popular types of flooring tile that people use nowadays in their homes. Although the use of marble as flooring tile dates back to the time of the Greeks and Romans, it is now finding its way back to people’s homes, and more specifically, to their kitchens.

What is marble?

Marble is actually the result of the exposure of limestone to high temperature and pressure, causing it to crystallize into the natural material that we now know as marble. It comes in a variety of colors, designs and patterns, as well as shapes and sizes, making it very ideal for use as tiles for flooring, countertop, and other similar applications. However, what makes marble tiles so appealing to be used as flooring tiles is its characteristic of being durable and aesthetically pleasing at the same time. It is a durable material, making it easy for it to resist stains very well. This is probably one of the main reasons why marble is considered to be one of the best materials for flooring.

Marble as kitchen flooring

Although marble can be used for flooring in the kitchen, not all of them offer the same type of quality and effectiveness as with some other types of marble, which is why there are only certain marble types that would be considered as the best ones to be used for such a purpose.

Marble comes in a variety of grades, depending on how durable and resistant it is to breakage, with Grade A marble being the most durable and resistant. If you are going to use marble for your kitchen floor, you must make sure that the grade of the marble that you are getting is of the highest one, especially since you are going to use it in an area where there will be a lot of possible contact with the floor through different mediums, such as the appliances, kitchen utensils, food ingredients, as well as liquid substances. You need to make sure that the type of marble that you are using in the kitchen is durable and resistant enough to handle a few bumps, scrapes and slams, in order to avoid major damage to the marble flooring like cracks and breakage.

It is also wise to use marble types that need the least amount of reinforcement, which means that it will be able to handle stains, as well as breakage, with very minimal support from sealants and protections. This is important if you want your marble flooring to last in the kitchen, especially since the kitchen is the place where a lot of mishaps and accidents occur, and in consistent durations.

One such marble type that offers most of that is the “tumbled” marble. It not only is durable enough to handle breakage, but is also resistant enough that it can handle the possible stains and damage with minimal support, but this does not mean that you can just leave a spill on it. You still need to take care of the marble flooring regardless of its ability to resist stain.

However, these are not the only characteristics that make tumbled marble so appropriate for kitchen flooring. This type of marble is considered as appropriate for an area such as the kitchen due to the fact that tumbled marble has a less slippery finish, thereby reducing the chances of accidents due to slips from happening. “Honed” marble is also less slippery, due to its dull, matter surface. However, this type of marble is more susceptible to stains and abrasions, making it a problem to have in the kitchen.

Evaluating Morningstar Bamboo Flooring And Other Suppliers

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Flooring

The bamboo is a type of grass that grows not just in China but all over Southeast Asia. It has now become quite fashionable to be used as flooring in many homes around the world as it is of the same high quality as many traditional hardwood floors and not as expensive.

As each stalk of bamboo takes only 5 years to be fully mature and can then renew itself without replanting, it is certainly an attractive alternative, as opposed to cutting down trees which can often take decades to become fully mature. Many companies like MorningStar Bamboo Flooring are slowly becoming known the world over for being able to provide us with this beautiful and environmentally friendly flooring.

As this particular kind of flooring continues to increase in popularity, the number of flooring companies supplying this will continue to grow as well. This will make our task of finding and selecting one which is trustworthy even more difficult. Oftentimes people might have to spend thousands of dollars on their flooring and they need to know that the company they are dealing with can be relied on.

Below are some items of background information about Morningstar and their products:

1. The boards are made from bamboo plants that are 4 years or older. Using immature bamboo reults in inferior floors.

2. Morning provides various choices of designs and coloring to enable the customer to make a selection which matches the style of their home.

3. They have a variation of floors which does not utilize any artificial stains and is instead colored naturally. This takes advantage of the fact that raw bamboo has some sugar content. When the bamboo is heated to a certain temperature, the sugar is caramelized and this results in a sugar-brown hue for the floor boards.

4. To make the boards easy to maintain and practically impervious to normal wear and tear, aluminum oxide is used as the pre-finish material.

Below we provide you with some simple guidelines you should be looking at when trying to find a reputable as well as dependable bamboo flooring supplier.

1. If you can, visit their premises. Morningstar Bamboo Flooring for example can be found in hundreds of flooring stores across the country. Also, why not try your local lumber yard as well?

2. Whenever you are shopping online for any kind of bamboo flooring, try to find any reviews and recommendations relating to it. Also look at the quality of the site offering the bamboo flooring and this will give you an indication of just how serious they are about the products that they sell.

3. Why not give the supplier a call and see how their staff interact with the customers. Also see if they are able to answer your questions as completely and succinctly as possible. Also see how long it takes them to actually answer the phone. If they are not prompt in answering the phone, give them a miss and go on to the next supplier on the list.

Finally a really good way of gauging if a business is reputable or not is to consider just how long they have been trading for. Suppliers such as MorningStar Bamboo Flooring have been going for several years now and have made all those customers who have dealt with them during this time very satisfied. You should be cautious when dealing with those companies who have only been around for a couple of years as they will not have gained the knowledge and experience to be able to provide excellent products and services.

A Guide To Hardwood Flooring

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Flooring

Cherry, white oak, birch and maple are other popular woods. Pre-finished engineered wood flooring is
very popular since it is very easy to install. Cost effectiveness is its prominent advantage. 1 reason for
choosing wood flooring is for the allergy benefits. Use it on bedrooms and they simply feel relaxed,
romantic, and dreamy. Maintaining wood flooring is also very easy. If there are children in the house,
wood flooring is prone to more serious damages such as stains, scratches, cuts, and scuffs. Wood flooring
is one of the most popular flooring choices of all times. Since only the core of the wood is actual wood
there is less chance of the flooring twisting, warping or even cupping. Only exotic hardwood flooring will
give you that stopping power that you desire and crave. When they do begin to show wear, they don’t need to
be replaced. Wood flooring can be refinished for a fraction of the cost of a new tile floor.

Laminate

If you plan on installing the floor yourself, with real wood or laminate, you should consider using the
interlocking system. Laminate can be installed over virtually any surface, but wood cannot be installed
over some surfaces. However, times have changed quite a bit in the world of laminate including the
craftsmanship. Better quality laminate is being used and more detailed craftsmanship has been applied so
they are sounding better and better everyday. When building a guitar you want the soundboard, better known
as the top, to be as lightweight and strong as possible. Creating this ratio with laminate is often
difficult because in order to make it strong it ends up too heavy. Carpet is one of those things where if
you’re planning to go for the cheapest option, it’s best to avoid it altogether, as it will be truly
terrible. Cheap laminate is simply much better than cheap carpet, and if price is an issue for you, it’s
an option you’d be better off considering. Carpet is one of those things where if you’re planning to go
for the cheapest option, it’s best to avoid it altogether, as it will be truly terrible. But laminate is
another creature all together.

Hardwood

Engineered wood flooring has been one of the great innovations in flooring to hit the market. Acclimatize
the Flooring: One of the biggest mistakes made when installing hardwood is not allowing the slats or boards
to acclimatize to the home. Hardwood floor never goes out of style. Solid hardwood can give a room an
expensive and high quality finish. Many people prefer the natural and organic look of wood in various
finishes. A TV stand made of hardwood is typically durable and attractive. What hardwood flooring offers
is the luxury of choice and an ease of integration into an interior design. Along with the advantages of
appearance, hardwood is and continues to be a choice in flooring that can add structural strength to a
residence or office. When you are making something as large and solid as a bed you are going to want to
use harder wood. However, not all woods classified as hardwood are hard, just as all woods classified as
softwoods are soft.

Bamboo

Bamboo is very similar to wood in color and form. How Bamboo Is Turned into a Floor. Timing is also
important in processing bamboo. Since bamboo is technically a grass, you might be wondering how it can be
made into a flooring material. It is thus a renewable source, with the promise of almost stable prices over
the years. Bamboo makes an excellent flooring product. Bamboo is milled both in the vertical and
horizontal direction.

Installation

Other questions to be considered are how long the installation will take, if the contractor has a license
and the warranties and guarantees. Wood floor installation is generally done by the supplier, although
some manufacturers have do-it-yourself flooring as well that you can install. Using wood for heating
requires a lot of research and consideration before you start. There are a lot of local regulations and
national regulations that need to be addressed before any installation is started. The installation
procedure is the same as that of a laminate floor. Although hardwood flooring installation is no easy
task, rest assured however that it’s still something doable by yourself…just as long as you have the
essential skills and tools, of course.

Carpets are known to cause allergies because they are difficult to clean. Unlike wood flooring, which is
composed exclusively of hardwood, laminate wood flooring is made from a combination of synthetic and
non-synthetic materials. Created in Europe, the product has now been in use for over 20 years. Laminated
wood flooring is an interlocking system that is installed on top of an existing substrate. Scratches and
cuts can be sanded out from time to time, so the floors will achieve the same look as they were when they
were installed. Extending the life of your wood flooring is fairly easy too. Then, you will want to
choose between Parquet and tongue and groove flooring. The other layers of the engineered hardwood
flooring are plywood or high density fiberboard. Many people prefer to cover the areas with carpets.
You can be confident that genuine Hardwood Flooring will add significant beauty, quality and value of your
home. Bruce Hardwood flooring is the most extensively used hardwood flooring in America.

Adding A Unique Style To Any Kitchen With A Limestone Countertop

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Flooring

There are many different countertop materials on the market today and choosing between them comes down to personal style, needs, and budget. For those who wish to make a statement that answers to both form and function, stone material is often the first choice for kitchen renovation. The limestone countertop, in particular, adds a touch of elegance and beauty to the kitchen while still offering durability and functionality.

The limestone material used to make the limestone countertop in the United States is imported from Canada, one of the largest producers of natural limestone. Like any natural stone, limestone is strong, durable, and uniquely beautiful; it comes in a variety of natural color combinations and textures from which consumers choose those pieces that will best complement their home’s décor.

Any natural stone countertop is likely to be a more expensive choice than a laminate or engineered material. But in many cases, those who have such countertops in their home will tell you that the price is well worth the low maintenance, timeless elegance, and unmatched durability inherent in these stones.

Limestone has a long association with great monuments and architecture; and this same unwavering resilience and beauty is what makes it so popular in private homes. The limestone countertop equals a sophistication and unrivaled quality that is well worth its expense.

The durability of the limestone countertop allows it to withstand humidity, heat, and moisture – common elements in a kitchen environment. It is also relatively resilient against scratches.

However, there are some areas in which the limestone countertop is especially vulnerable. Since limestone is made of a large portion of calcium, a limestone countertop generally does fare well when it comes in contact with acidic or corrosive substances. Should the limestone come into contact with anything of this nature it can be easily corroded or marred.

That is why it is so vitally important to address any spills immediately so as to maintain the integrity of this beautiful stone. Additionally, limestone is easily stained so spills of any kind should be addressed with mild, natural cleansers.

As with any stone material, installing the limestone countertop can be something of a challenge. Experts recommend that do-it-yourselfers stay away from this particular project unless they’ve had experience in handling limestone and installing this particular countertop. This installation job is something that is best left to the professionals.

A professional contractor can be found through the retailer where you purchased your countertop or through independent resources. Just be sure that you are dealing with someone who is knowledgeable about limestone and has the experience to expertly install your countertop.

A countertop can surely change the overall appearance of a kitchen and even dictate the décor of the entire home. Look for out of the ordinary materials – such as the limestone countertop – that will add warmth, depth, and interest to your space, drawing the eye of anyone who enters and adding value to your home.

Laminate Flooring Installation

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Flooring

Laminate flooring is a growing part of the flooring market. Its multiple purposes, durability, quality finish and its economical cost has made in the most popular choice for flooring among do-it-yourselfers and contractors as an excellent option for attractive and inexpensive new flooring. Today, laminate flooring comes in many different types of finishes resembling natural wood or stained hardwood floors.

Is It Always The Right Choice?

While laminate is an excellent choice for flooring in your home, there are still a few things to keep in mind before you decide on it. A laminate floor is durable, very resistant to damage and scratches as well as easy and inexpensive to install but there are a few minor things you should know before you start removing your old floor and installing laminate. First to give you an idea of the durability and almost destruction proof quality of laminate flooring, think of it like this. It is essentially made of the same material used on kitchen counter tops that survive daily use and able to be cleaned with a simple wipe. Laminate flooring is installed as a floating floor and while most people find it easy to walk on because of its ‘give’ factor, some may find it to sound a bit hollow. Like real wood, laminate flooring can still be scratched and dented although not as easily as real wood.

Too much moisture will also damage your laminate floors as would too much moisture on your real wood floors. To accommodate shrinkage and expansion in laminate floors, installation for laminate is the same as hardwood. Your need to consider the width of the baseboard used in order not too have any spaces on the floor. The larger the area, the wider the baseboard needed as larger areas will expand and contract more than smaller areas. A good rule of thumb when considering laminate for your home is to keep the humidity level in your home between 40% and 50% so the floor doesn’t expand and contract much.

Proper Installation Of Laminate?

Laminate can be installed over existing ceramic tiles, vinyl or hardwood. Although laminate flooring has been marketed as the ultimate do-it-yourself project requiring minimal expertise, like all things it is not entirely a no-brainer. In order to get the job done properly and have the floor be long lasting and problem free essentially, some things need to be considered before installing the floor. First of all, laminate is based on the “click” system, but for the click system to work the floor upon which the laminate will be installed must generally be level overall or the click system will fail over time. Hiring an expert flooring installer may be worthwhile in the long term to avoid any such problems. In certain installations, a vapor barrier is required or a premium foam underlayment can be purchased. while proper measurement and cutting equates to minimal waste and lower costs. Proper tools and planning are also required to map out floor vents and how much to leave for undercut door jams.

“You Get What You Pay For”

Like most things in life, “you get what you pay for”. Generally, the cheaper the laminate floor, the cheaper the product itself and the cheaper the locking system is. As a result, a cheaper laminate may not withstand the wear and tear of everyday traffic. With laminate, not only is it better to buy domestic product but follow up with warranties and manufacturers is easier too. This is not always the case with imported, inferior foreign laminate flooring.

Your Guide To Vinyl Flooring

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Flooring

How do you choose vinyl flooring? Learn about this type of flooring and what it is made of and more.

Vinyl flooring is the most common type of resilient flooring and by far the most popular flooring material in the U.S. Often, resilient flooring and vinyl flooring are two interchangeable terms.

Vinyl flooring comes in both low end and high-end types. Low-end vinyl flooring is often recommended if you want to have the least expensive type of flooring material. However, high-end vinyl floors can also compete with expensive flooring like hardwood in both quality and appearance.

What is vinyl flooring made of. Vinyl flooring materials are composed of varying amounts of vinyl. These are either in solid or composite types of vinyl. Solid vinyl is composed of vinyl pieces set in a vinyl base while composite vinyl is made of vinyl pieces embedded in non-vinyl fillers. The more expensive and more durable of these two types of vinyl is solid vinyl. Good quality flooring contains higher amount of vinyl components. Wear layer is the protective topping that is found in all vinyl flooring. This is either in urethane, which is clear and with no wax covering or all in vinyl. The vinyl type is more resistant to stains and scratches. However it can lose its gloss more easily than the urethane protective topping. Glossy floor can get slippery and can be hazardous especially when used in the bathroom. Both types of protective toppings can wear in time and may become dull unless wax is applied regularly.

All vinyl floors have a cushion backing, which comes in variety of thickness. This property is valuable especially when vinyl is installed in the kitchen where there is a higher tendency of dropping breakables. Unfortunately, the thicker the cushion backing is, the easier the floor can suffer from dents. To solve this problem, you can choose textured vinyl surfaces to camouflage the dents.

Vinyl flooring comes in two forms. These are in tile and sheet forms. Most people who do their own installations prefer to use vinyl tiles. These are easier and quicker to install. Most vinyl tiles come with adhesive backing that an installer will have to peel off, position on the floor and stick it on. The surface where the vinyl will be installed should be clean and smooth to provide a good and tight fit. Others have felt backing and glue application is needed on the floor surface for installation. This type however is very difficult to remove if replacement is required. There is also a vinyl-backed type, which only requires gluing on the edges and can be easily removed when replacement is needed. Sheet vinyl on the other hand costs higher than tiles per square foot. This also requires more time and motivation to install. An average do-it yourself homeowner may find installing sheet vinyl a little more difficult.

Finally, it is usually advisable to settle for better quality vinyl flooring that lasts longer than to get the lowest type and suffer from the arduous process of replacing the cheap floor material in just a few years time.

Reasons For Choosing Marble Flooring For Your Home

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Flooring

Certainly if you are looking for something that really provides a statement to your home as well as looking absolutely beautiful then you could do no worse than deciding to have marble flooring installed. In this article we will look closely at what marble flooring is and why it is a suitable choice for most homes.

In fact during the last 10 years many hard stone products such as marble and granite have seen an incredible growth in their sales (around 2,000%). The sales of marble flooring alone have increased by about 400% during the last five years. Certainly homeowner’s how now just begun to discover the advantages that come with having marble flooring as well as countertops, back splashes and fireplace surrounds etc., installed in their homes.

If you were to visit Italy, Spain or many of the other warm countries around the world you will see the abundant use of marble flooring in their homes. Although for many years marble was only quarried in Italy for used in building but today it is now being quarried in Spain, Mexico, China and even Russia. In fact the market for marble flooring in homes in warmer climates is very huge and the quality and finish of this flooring is very high. Because it comes in a varying range of natural patterns and colors all of which have the natural pattern of veins running through it the choice of marble flooring to select from is immense and this is one reason as to why marble flooring never seems to go out of vogue.

As marble flooring is a natural product is has a wide range of stain resistance properties to it although orange juice, nail polish remover, shampoo and even water could actually cause serious stains to certain types of marble. Therefore it is important that any marble flooring you do have installed is cleaned and resealed professionally every 9 to 18 months in order that it is stays in the best condition possible and so will last for years to come. Normally when a marble floor is first laid it will be treated with a stain resistant sealant and this normally protects it for about 10 years and then after this period it should then be resealed. However it is important that any spills which do occur on the marble flooring are cleaned up straight away and the more acidic the liquid the more likely it is to cause a stain. Yet if the marble flooring does become stained then it can easily be removed by a professional. So other than ensuring that you keep your marble floors clean they need little or no maintenance.

Portable Dance Floors – Stylish and Affordable

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Flooring

Portable dance floors are great additions to any home. These are usually lightweight, easy to install, and need little maintenance. These are also available in various colors and styles, so that you can buy one that matches the theme of the rest of your home. Even some years back, dance floors were only available in thick plywood only. But now, various materials are used to create these beautiful home accessories. You can get portable dance floors made of laminates, polymer with foam backing, and many other materials at reasonable prices. Wood is still around of course, for the unique “natural” feeling, but its cost is the main drawback.

Portable dance floors used to be large structures that required considerable effort and service from skilled personnel to be installed properly even some years ago. But now, these are available in small sized interlocking tiles that can be installed easily by just about anyone. You could buy a package of these tiles and install a dance floor all by yourself in 2-3 hours. All you need to do is unwrap the tiles, click them into place and you are done. The tiles come with adhesive already applied on their downsides, so installing them is a breeze.

Dance flooring is now available in a variety of colors and textures. You can get laminate tiles with wooden finish or even realistic looking grout lines so that they resemble stone mosaic perfectly. You can get tiles in various colors as well, from classic shades of white and black to special shades, such as, deep mahogany, rich brown, dark cherry red, opal black, or even ivory white. You can choose from glossy or natural finish, so as to match the décor of your home. The feel of laminate floors closely matches that of wooden floors these days, even down to the palpable warmth that wooden floors exude. If you love tap dancing, you will love the muffled sound these floors give off. Besides, these are relatively inexpensive than wooden floors.

Wooden floors, on the other hand, are expensive, but if cost is no bar, then you simply cannot go wrong with these. The absolute natural feel of the luxurious maple or walnut wood is simply great. The 9.5 cm thick wooden floors provide good support to the feet while dancing and also give off a deep, natural sound. So, if you can afford the cost, and don’t mind the extra hassle of installing these, look no further than one of these floors.

Cheap Laminate Floors – A Cost-Effective Alternative to Hardwood Flooring

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Flooring

Cheap laminate floors are a great alternative to hardwood. Why? While hardwood is beautiful and durable, laminate offers both qualities for far less. Even installation is much cheaper, as homeowners can usually do it themselves. This makes laminate a wise choice for budget-conscious buyers. Today’s laminates are well-made, resistant to wear and tear and affordable.

Cheap Laminate Floors vs. Hardwood- Factors to Consider

Cost is an important factor to consider when purchasing any floor. Cheap laminate floors are a great value because they give years of performance for less than the cost of hardwood. Another factor is cost of installation. Many people fail to add this into the square foot price of their flooring, and thus get an unpleasant surprise at estimate time. Hardwood, like tile and carpet, should only be installed by professionals. These types of flooring require expertise in handling the materials and in knowing what kinds of underlayment, adhesives, etc. are needed.

Laminate, on the other hand, is specifically designed to be easy to install with minimal tools and skill. Some cheap laminate floors even come with the backing already attached, so that you only have to lay it down and lock the pieces together. Also, laminate is usually glueless, so there is no need to handle strong adhesives. This makes laminate even more cost-effective when compared to hardwood.

Care and maintenance of laminate flooring also compares favorably to hardwood. While hardwood is durable, it is prone to scratching, dents and heat and water damage over time. Cheap laminate floors have hard, non-porous surfaces that repel water and won’t dent. And, while hardwood requires refinishing every few years, laminate needs only a regular mopping to stay looking like new.

The Advantages of Cheap Laminate Floors Make Them a Wise Choice

When weighing the benefits of all types of flooring, think about the look you want to achieve. Hardwood has timeless beauty, but today’s cheap laminate floors have come a long way in recreating the elegance of real wood. Good quality laminate comes in a wide variety of styles and grains, meant to imitate the richness and variation found in real wood. It is a real alternative to hardwood because it has an authentic look yet it fits into almost any budget.

In the end, your budget and needs will determine which type of flooring is right for you. Cheap laminate floors have become the flooring of choice for many people who want to get the most value for their money. They are durable, beautiful and easy to maintain. And, with more styles and features than ever before, they allow you more options for getting the look you want. They are a stylish and cost-effective alternative to hardwood.
