Retaining Walls For Residential and Commercial Property

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Landscaping

A retaining wall is an artificial structure which serves to resist the pressure of soil when a change in ground elevation exceeds the angle of repose. Not only will a well-constructed wall properly support sloping earth, it will also serve as an effective means of draining water runoff and reducing hydrostatic pressure.

The most common of these structures is a cantilever wall, which is a freestanding barrier with no lateral support at the top. Normally, retaining walls are cantilevered from a footing extending up past the grade on one side and holding back a higher level grade on the opposite side. They must be planned and constructed to resist pressures from both soil and water. Another notable type of wall is an anchored retaining wall, which is supported by anchors deep in the earth behind the wall (into the slope). Soil nailing is a technique that can be employed to further reinforce a retaining wall. Soil nailing is an economical technique for stabilizing slopes and for constructing retaining walls from the top down. This ground reinforcement process uses steel tendons which are drilled and grouted into the soil to create a composite mass similar to a gravity wall.

Planning and design is essential when placing retaining walls, recognizing that their sole purpose is to restrict the natural movement of soil down slope due to gravity. Pressures are lowest at the top of the wall and dramatically increase toward the base. Improper installation of a retaining wall can lead to tipping or complete collapse due to the differences in force on the wall’s surface.

A retaining wall can be constructed using a variety of materials, from stones and concrete blocks, to wood planks and logs. The height and materials of the wall are determined based on a number of conditions. Among the most important factors when considering materials and placement are: the proposed height of the wall, the type of soil to retain behind the wall, the angle of the slope, and whether any objects of significant weight are located on the slope (structures, vehicles, etc). It is also very important to make sure a drainage solution is in place for the soil above the wall. When the soil absorbs moisture from watering or rainfall, the stress on the retaining wall increase dramatically. Without proper drainage, the wall will be more susceptible to collapse, sliding or tipping, which can be a very costly and potentially hazardous situation.

By far, the most common uses for these walls are parking lots and driveways, but they can also be used to support outdoor patios or border an in-ground pool. Whether the property is residential or commercial, sometimes the contours of the landscape limit the options for the path of a driveway, or the elevation and size of a parking lot. The use of these walls allow driveways and parking lots to exist where it would ordinarily not be possible.

As we all know, functionality doesn’t always mean appearance has to suffer. Stone, concrete and wood (the most common materials for construction of a retaining wall) can nicely accent a property, and also can serve as a foundation for a variety of unique landscaping opportunities that ordinarily would not present themselves. A wall can be constructed in a series of steps or levels, allowing a unique creative outlet for planting shrubs, flowers, and other decorative elements that will add depth and attractiveness. Stepped walls have also proven to be a more effective form of erosion control.

Landscaping Ideas to Maximize Space in a Small Yard

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Landscaping

Create a schematic design for your yard. Even if you are not artistically inclined, a good way to visualize your end project is to plan ahead. The scale and design of your plan may be simple or elaborate, keep in mind the overall dimension of your landscape and existing plant or hardscape material. You may already have outdoor furniture, equipment, or sitting spaces. Creating an entirely new landscape is one option or incorporating existing elements into your plan is a second option.

Design elements. There are seven design elements, but the five most important are: texture, color, size, shape, and direction. Consider theses elements when choosing plant species. Plantings can be grouped together or provide a nice border path. Purchasing plants that are dwarf varieties or have moderate growth would also benefit a smaller landscape.

Design principles. A few design principles are also helpful when planning your final design. These include: balance, rhythm/harmony, unity, contrast, focal points, and repetition. All of the natural and synthetic materials in your landscape should work together in a cohesive manner. You may want a specimen tree as the main focal point or create plant groupings throughout, leading your eye around a smaller space. In any case, plant height and placement are vital factors within your plan. Any hardscape materials used should compliment your new plantings.

What activities will be going on in the space? If you answer only one question this would be the most important. This will determine how the space will be utilized. Will it be a place for entertaining, gardening, relaxing, playing, or all the above? Keep in mind square footage and how much space is adequate for running around or how a 20′ x 20′ entertaining patio would be incorporated into the final scheme. Whatever the reasoning, plot out specific dimensions and leave at least a few feet along lot lines for future plantings or fencing.

Which plants would you like to see here? You may consider planting a fruit tree or shade tree in your yard. Another option would be seasonal gardens with evergreen borders. You may also consider an all native landscape. Whichever plants you choose keep in mind the light, water, maintenance, and growth requirements. You should also think about grouping similar plants with each other, maximizing energy efficiency and minimizing your maintenance routine. Sunlight, shade requirements, and drainage will also be determining factors in the final placement of plant species. Consider where each plant grows best and will thrive once planted.

Which plants should be kept in your landscape? You may have specimen trees, shrubs, or gardens in your yard. If they are in the way of your final design scheme, consider moving them to an alternate location in your yard. All because they were in one location to begin with doesn’t mean you have to keep them there or completely remove them from your landscape.

Pool Landscaping Ideas

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Landscaping

When it comes to landscaping, there are many places to consider. Yards, fields, and around the house often have some in common it comes to the pool, there are a few distinct differences. Often the family pool landscaping will stand out from the rest, and hopefully not clash. This makes the task of pool landscaping a little harder than the rest. There is also the concern of safety and securing the pool area to prevent tragic accidents that can happen when you are not there to keep watch. Securing your pool can have notable impact even on your homeowners insurance rates. When you have a pool, you have extra concerns on a number of fronts.

With all this in mind you still want to set a great comfortable scene around the pool that might even bring you a great level of privacy. You are not the first, nor are you at all alone in desiring great pool landscaping. Some of the factors that can dramatically effect your pool landscaping include in ground and above ground pools, the terrain around the pool, and how much room you have around it as well. If you are considering your pool, landscaping prior to actually putting the pool in, you may be in the best position of all.

Along with your search for comfort, security, safety, and scenery, you may also want to consult for extra input from your insurance agent, local safety officials, and even the pool manufacturers. You will likely find some restrictions to consider, but you may indeed find many great ideas as well. In the end, this will likely help you avoid a number of problems, and leave you to enjoy your pool more. Of course, you are also considering the scenery you will enjoy when swimming, sunbathing, or otherwise enjoying the benefits of being around your pool, so you will definitely want to consider that setting deeply.

Above ground, pools can be a little simpler for many reasons. Pool landscaping for these can be cost effective elaborate decks with steps that can be locked up out of reach to secure them. Often these look great if they blend in well with your home and other landscaping, and can still be made large enough for furniture to relax on, as well as the things you need to enjoy your pool to the greatest. When it comes to in ground pools you will indeed need to put a lot more focus in fencing and probably vegetation that helps conceal things to your liking. At the same time, you can definitely bring about great landscapes to go with them. Just expect more expense in the pool landscaping along with the additional expenses of in ground pools. Often the venders for your pool will have many resources to help you as well on this path.

Other factors you want to consider with pool landscaping are how many people will be there to enjoy the pool, and how comfortable do you want them to be? With the scent that often comes from conditioning the water in your pool, you may also want to put more focus on vegetation that has delightful smells to offset it, and minimizing debris that may land in the pool. In the end, you want a great scene to enjoy at your pool. The landscaping there should bring you comfort, security, privacy, and delight to your eyes during the many times you relax around it. Focusing on the details ahead of time should help you keep the expenses down, and enjoyment up!

Purchase Tips For Residential Aluminum Fence

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Landscaping

If you’re a home owner with a wooden fence you have probably noticed that they require a lot of maintenance. Either you’re replacing individual pickets or you’re repainting the whole fence because the paint has been weather damaged and is peeling or chipping. This is part of owning a wooden fence and, although they look beautiful once they’re complete, it’s a common thing for long-term home owners to skip this type of fence entirely and opt-in for a longer-lasting material that requires less maintenance; Aluminum.

The only truly difficult thing for an ex-wood fence owner to get used to when installing residential aluminum fence is that, unlike wood, aluminum has absolutely no give. You no longer have the luxury of being able to just manipulate the material if your measurements are incorrect. Aluminum requires you to invest time and attention into the entire planning process, it’s not difficult but does involve a lot a great deal of measuring and double-checking.

Before you start planning your perimeter, look around and find an aluminum fence dealer. Be aware that a lot of dealers offer to ship your product “free of charge”; don’t be fooled. It’s not free of charge. If the dealer insists that it is free of charge, ask for an invoice with and without the shipping calculated. It’s not free. Arrange your own shipping. It’s not difficult, there are plenty of online freight quote websites that can do the job in no-time (and for much less). Also, to really take advantage of the reliability and durability of aluminum, make sure you find a dealer who offers powder coating.

Once you have found a dealer, make sure you have the exact measurements of each length of fence. Often you’ll find that dealers offer fence sections in 7 or 8 foot lengths. Measure the perimeter of your property, marking each post location with a stake and tying a string between them (to ensure a straight line). You may come to a point where your fence section will be too long, you can either shave your fence sections yourself (if you know how), or talk to your dealer about a modified piece before you place your order.

This is important, pay attention to all of the measurements for your fence; posts, gates, corner posts, and fence sections. Draw it all out and make sure everything makes sense before you ever start installing your residential aluminum fence. Take a little time here will save you a lot later on.

The Basics of Mowing the Perfect Lawn

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Landscaping

The look of a perfect lawn is a thing to behold. The perfect lines, the perfect edges, the entire effect can add to the enjoyment of your yard and home. Mowing that perfect lawn takes a little bit of practice and trial and error though.

Below are a few tips to help you begin mowing the perfect lawn now:

Sharpen those blades!

When mower blades get dull, the effect they produce can be easily noticeable. The blades leave the grass length looking chopped and uneven. Making sure your blades are super sharp before mowing will help to ensure an even, tight look to the entire yard.

Don’t go too short

Even if it has been awhile since the yard has been mowed, you only want to aim for taking off about 1/3 of the current height of the grass. Cutting off more can actually shock the grass and cause it to turn an unsightly brown. If the grass is really high, mow it once, then wait a few days and mow again to your desired height.

Mow outside edge first

By starting with the outside edges of your lawn, you can take time to mow around things such as flowerbeds and driveways and take your time in doing so. Now that you have established this perimeter, mowing the inside grass area will be easier to focus on and allow you to keep to a specific pattern more easily.

Mow long end to end

One of the easiest ways to produce a striking end result to your mowing efforts is to mow long stripes in the yard. This helps to visually elongate the area and is very appealing to the eye. Simply mow straight lines long end to end to produce this neat and professional looking effect.

Trim and edge as a final step

After all the grass has been mowed, trim and edge the outside perimeter as a final step to put that perfect touch on your well cared for lawn.

Following the steps above and taking your time in doing so can help you achieve your goal of mowing that perfect lawn every time.

Brainstorm Landscaping Ideas With a Bush Walk

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Landscaping

Like many people, you probably want to incorporate native Australian grasses, plants and flowers in your landscape design. One of the best ways to gain inspiration when doing so is by going out on a nice bush walk. Grab your camera and hit the trail to get some really topnotch ideas.

Get Ready!

Regardless of where you live in Australia, there is bound to be an optimal bush walking site nearby. Track one down and get ready to be inspired. You’re going to want to bring along a camera – preferably a digital one – and a notepad. As you walk along, snap pictures of the plants and flowers that strike your fancy and take notes about what really catches your eye.

Get Inspired!

Most experienced landscaping professionals will tell you that sticking with plants that are native to Australia is always a smart move; that’s largely why bush walks are such great ideas. As you stroll along, you’ll get to see a wide assortment of native plants, flowers and grasses to get inspired for your landscape design project. Keep in mind that it is illegal to take seeds or cuttings from most trails, though – that’s where your camera and notepad come into play. By presenting the photos and notes that you’d made to your landscape design professional, he can help you come up with a great plan.

Take In Nature’s Bounty -

There are many great plants to consider when coming up with a new landscape design project. Along your bush walk, you may stumble across one or more of the following prime examples:

The Glory Wedge Pea – Buttercup-colored flowers begin as dark-colored buds on the eye-catching Glory Wedge Pea. There’s a very good chance that you’ll stumble across them during your walk, and you just might decide to incorporate them into your landscape design concept.

Grass Trees – More than likely, you’ll see several examples of Australia’s famous grass trees during your walk. Many homeowners choose to incorporate grass trees into their landscape design because they are low maintenance and very long lasting.

The Mountain Devil – The seed pods of the Mountain Devil are what give this distinctive flower its name; they have what appear to be little horns on them. These can be pruned to maintain a bushy, colorful melange in your garden.

The Snow Wreath – Containers or raised beds are great places for the wonderfully-scented Snow Wreath. These elements also add a bit of dimension and depth to your landscape design scheme, so ask your landscape design company for more information.

The vast majority of landscape gardeners Brisbane such as MP Landscapes urge their clients to stick with native plants, flowers and grasses because they are easier to maintain and don’t harm the soil. As you walk along during your bush walk, keep that in mind so that you arrive at landscaping Brisbane ideas that will work for you.

Uses of the Sun Shelter Canopy

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Landscaping

Sun rays can cause costly damage to our valuables, including the ones we love. Investing in some type of sun shelter canopy to avoid overexposure can save time, money, and detriment to the body. Summer months require the most shelter since it is when exposure is greatest. A short list of uses for a sun shelter canopy would be:

1. Protecting the family
2. Car, Boat and other Vehicle Protection
3. Special Events
4. Bedding Protection and Decor
5. Businesses

Most people are aware of the importance of protection from the sun. In addition to the use of sun screen, shelter from the sun comes in many varieties. Babies have the most delicate skin and therefore need to have a sun shelter canopy attachment for the stroller or carrier. Enjoying family barbecues, camping, and beach outings require canopies for long periods of exposure.

Shopping for a canopy could mean spending as little as $30 or as much as thousands for more sophisticated versions. If a more sophisticated version is desired for a special event, sun shelter canopies are available for rent as well. They are less expensive to rent than tents.

Metal versions in the form of carports are available for cars, boats and other vehicles. These types come in handy where a garage is not available. Not only do they protect vehicles from the sun, but snow and rain as well. Fabric awnings at the front door of businesses add decor to the entry way, but what is not so obvious are the way in which walk-way overhangs serve as another form of shelter from the sun.

A sun shelter canopy for the bed has a more decorative usage unless the bed is openly located in a tropical setting. Protection from the sun comes in many forms. Although a sun canopy sounds like a luxury item, the many uses of it make it a very necessary item.

Tools and Equipment Used in Landscaping

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Landscaping

A carefully landscaped yard is the key to the curb appeal of a beautiful home. Curb appeal is important in the enjoyment of the property by current homeowners as well as the most important way to attract potential buyers if the homeowner ever decides to sell the home. In order to create this positive curb appeal, many homeowners turn to professional landscaping companies in order to transform their yard. Landscaping companies specialize in the design, implementation, and upkeep of yards and outdoor features. In order to accomplish this, landscapers use a wide variety of tools and equipment. Listed below is a description of some common tools used by landscapers.

Chainsaws
A chainsaw is a portable mechanical saw used for cutting lumber. Chainsaws can be powered in a variety of ways including electric batteries, gasoline, compressed air, or hydraulic power. In landscaping, chainsaws are used for limbing, tree felling, and removing excess branches and foliage.

Hedge Trimmers
A motorized hedge trimmer is another common piece of equipment used in landscaping. Motorized hedge trimmers allow landscaping technicians to work faster and much more efficiently than they would using manual hedge trimmers.

Pruning shears
For more detailed work like pruning shrubs or dead heading flowers, landscapers use a set of pruning shears. Pruning shears are type of handheld scissor used for cutting smaller foliage like plants or flowers.

Loppers
Loppers are a larger version of pruning shears. They include two larger handles and blades for the manual cutting or “lopping” of large branches or twigs.

Guide to Easily Care For Shrubs For Your Landscape

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Landscaping

If you want a green landscape but don’t have a lot of time to spend caring for it, shrubs are a good choice. Properly selected shrubs are easy to care for and can provide year round interest.

Happy Shrubs Are Easy Care Shrubs

Just like in other forms of gardening, choosing shrubs for the landscape means paying attention to the conditions the shrub will be planted in and knowing what you want from the planting. If you have never had your soil tested, a soil test is recommended before you spend a lot of money on landscaping. You will also need to look at the area to see what type of soil you have (sandy, organic or clay) and what type of light each area receives.

Plants that are happy where they are placed will grow as expected and won’t need excessive coddling. Happy shrubs are easy to grow shrubs. You can find the needs of plants by examining the plant tags, catalog descriptions or good reference books. When you shop for plants, have a list of what will grow well in your conditions so you won’t be tempted to buy shrubs that just look nice or that are on sale.

Pay attention to the adult size and shape of shrubs, which will also be listed on those tags or in references. Small and cute now doesn’t mean the shrub won’t become a huge mess later. Also pay attention to how far from the house or walkways that you plant your shrubs. When they reach adult size, you don’t want them to cover a window or make it impossible to reach the doorway. You can prune most shrubs, but constant pruning doesn’t equal easy care.

Remember that there may be many cultivars of the same species of shrub, and some of those may suit your property better than others. For example, there are arborvitaes that grow into trees and those that stay low and globe-shaped. There are junipers that hug the ground and those that grow tall and narrow. There are dwarf versions of many types of shrubs. Some varieties may be more winter hardy in your zone than others.

Some Easy Care Evergreen Shrubs

Arborvitaes or cedars come in a number of sizes. They have soft, flat needles and a pleasant smell. There are some arborvitaes with variegated foliage for additional interest. Arborvitaes will grow well over a large area of the country.

There are numerous forms of juniper in several shades of green and gold. Junipers have sharp needles, and there are some forms that will grow as far north as Zone 4 and as far south as Zone 7.

If you have acidic soil and light shade to full sun, a holly may be right for you. Hollies have broad leaves but are evergreen. Some hollies become quite large over time, so choose carefully. If you have both male and female plants, you will be rewarded with red berries in winter.

Other acid-soil lovers that prefer some shade and protection from winter wind are the azaleas and rhododendrons. There are large and small varieties of both. In the right location, they require little care and will give you beautiful spring flowers. Some varieties are not evergreen in all climates.

For the drier southwestern areas, Manzanita is a broad-leaved evergreen shrub that develops small, bright-red, apple-like fruit in summer.

Easy Care Deciduous Shrubs

Lilacs grow so easily they have become wild in many areas. They will grow in all areas except the far south and desert southwest. They can become large, so use them where they have plenty of room. Full sun and good air circulation are best for lilacs. You’ll be rewarded with lovely flowers in spring.

If you are in California or the Southwest, you may want to grow Ceanothus in one of its many forms instead of lilacs. They have nice foliage and pretty, blue summer flowers that attract butterflies.

Viburnums are easy to grow, with a wide range of flower and fruit types, but four feet tall is generally considered a small viburnum. They are best used where they don’t need to be pruned and are allowed to have their natural shape. There are viburnums for Zones 3 to 8.

Forsythia is another shrub that looks best when allowed to develop its natural form. It’s hardy from Zones 3 to 8. Beautiful golden flowers cover it in spring.

The Burning Bush, or Euonymus alata, is a widely planted shrub in Zones 3 to 7. It has brilliant-red fall coloring. It prefers full sun and a yearly pruning is recommended.

Don’t forget the new shrub roses. These come in various sizes, from groundcovers to large shrubs. There is a wide range of colors. They bloom all summer and don’t require spraying. They may die back to the roots in cold climates, but they quickly recover. Dead branches will need to be pruned out each spring, but after that little pruning is needed.

Barberries are thorny shrubs with small leaves. Many have deep purple or crimson foliage all year. They come in various sizes and prefer full sun in Zones 4 to 7.

For the western coastal areas, a hardy native shrub, Holodiscus discolor, or Cream Bush, with its sprays of creamy white, sweet-smelling flowers, is a good choice.

In the coastal southwest, Rosemary becomes a large fragrant shrub with beautiful blue flowers. It’s tough and drought-resistant and is great for cooking.
