Disadvantages of Yellow Brass Pipe Fittings

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Plumbing

No one likes calling the plumber, but if you’ve ever been in a situation where you see water leaking from the middle of a copper or brass pipe, you know there is really no choice. Leaky pipe problems like this often happen simply because of disadvantages of brass pipe materials.

Brass is a copper alloy made of zinc and copper. These pipes usually come in two varieties: red and yellow. The more yellow the pipe, the more zinc it has in it. Problems stemming from these are numerous. For starters, the zinc in the pipes is know to “dezincify.” This is a process of corrosion that causes the zinc in the pipe to transform into zinc oxide, a whitish powder that can clog pipes and fixtures.

Dezincification also weakens the structure of yellow brass pipes and leaves them prone to pinhole leaks. This type of corrosion in yellow brass pipes starts on the inside of the pipe, so it’s frequently hard to detect until it’s too late. Eventually, however, the process of dezincification in the yellow brass will create a pinhole where water will slowly (at first) leak through the hole and leave behind mineral deposits on the outside of the pipe. As you might expect, the pinhole leak will either continue to grow or the water pressure will push through the mineral deposits, and you’ll have an indoor sprinkler on your hands. Yellow brass problems are not exclusive to pipes, either. Many pipe fittings and valves are made with yellow brass, and they are prone to the same sets of problems.

How quickly yellow brass pipes degrade depends on several factors including the acidity, pressure, and chemicals in the water passing through the pipes. Only a qualified plumber or home inspector could give an accurate estimate of how long a particular piece of plumbing will last.

Certain pipe systems used plumbing connections known as yellow brass fittings. These fittings are subject to a process called dezincification which can cause catastrophic leaks and damage to homes, apartments, condos and office buildings. Some manufacturers have been subject to class action lawsuits and the extent of the problem is yet to be fully known.

Finding the Right Plumbing Contractor For You

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Plumbing

If you think that plumbers and plumbing contractors are one and the same, you have another think coming folks! Here is the difference between the two and an explanation of why. Think about it in this fashion: Small jobs a plumber can handle, larger jobs require a plumbing contractor. This basically in a nutshell means that there is a difference between your local plumber and a plumbing contractor. The plumber handles jobs such as leaking sinks where a plumbing contractor needs to be used when you are remodeling for example.

This is where a plumbing contractor fits right in. Some of the jobs that they will do include replacement of piping or replacement of a septic system. So with that being said, how do you find the right contractor for the job? One of the first things that you would do is to do a little bit of research and legwork before you even choose someone of this sort for any type of project that you may have in mind. Remember to get several different estimates before you make your decision as to whom to hire. If you meet them in person, you have a better idea of whom to hire.

Check references carefully as they can be clues as to how satisfied a customer or client will be about using their services. No matter if the plumbing contractor is for residential or commercial you would follow the same advice and do your homework before choosing. These can be very expensive so a little time taken can save you a lot. When dealing with contracts, make sure that everything is spelled out in the contract. While there are many different ways to look for a contractor of this sort, references from others are good sources.

Just like you would not want anyone than your local plumber doing your sink, you don’t want just anyone doing a remodel or commercial job. Comparison shopping can save you money but beware here. Just because something is offered cheaply doesn’t mean that it will last. Take the time to really talk to the contracting company and talk to their references. It really is that vital to take the time to search out the best contractor for you and the particular job in question. Remember also that these contractors only take on big jobs so if you have a faulty water heater, a plumber is the one to call.

This is basically how you would choose the right plumbing contractor for your site and your job. Time must be taken to ensure that you have the right people for the job and by doing a bit of legwork you can save both time and money. Using references is another way to check and see if the company will be a fit for you and your project. With many different ways to locate these types of contractors including phone book, reference, and internet you can be sure that you will be able to find the right one for you.

How to Control Noisy Pipes

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Plumbing

Banging, cracking, rattling, whistling – noisy water pipes and connections are not to be overlooked, they might point out critical plumbing troubles. Learn in what way to listen to, and quiet noisy water pipes.

Water Hammer

In case you overhear earsplitting hammering after closing water-availability, this is a water hammer problem that happens once water slams into a shut off control device subsequent to charging down a pipe at high velocity. Left untreated, the recurring collisions ruin piping and fittings. Water hammer arresters are inserted into specific sections to absorb the force of water, and thwart water from crushing into the shut off regulator. Hammering sounds point out that air has escaped. Emptying water from the pipes ought to renew the water hammer arresters. Turn off water supply to the home. Turn on lowermost taps in or around the premises to flush the network.

Cracking

Creaking sounds appear with the stretching and shrinking of the copper water pipes that carry hot water.

Clattering

When you overhear your piping rattling or shaking anytime water is charging through, chances are they are loosely attached. Water velocity charging through unfastened piping makes them collide against the wall, producing the clattering noise. Anchor the pipe in place or pad the pipe to stop the clattering sound.

Shrieking

As soon as water runs through a limited zone of the pipeline a shrieking sound is produced. This is typically caused by deposit buildup, or a defective washer or valve. If shrieking arises whenever you switch on a particular spout, replace the washer or valve to solve the problem. If shrilling arises as soon as any spout is turned on, the restriction may be located in the central water-supply regulator. If possible, adjust water pressure, yet if the whistling sound persists a plumbing service provider might replace the original control device.

Pick up on your noisy pipes to understand in what way to repair them. Left untreated, noisy pipes usually worsen into costly plumbing crises like split pipes, rusted pipes or dripping pipelines.

Soldering Copper Pipe

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Plumbing

For those home owners who insist on doing there own plumbing projects here is a little guide to assist you with the soldering of the copper piping used in home plumbing systems. First I should point out that if you do your own pluming installations you should have a general idea of the codes governing such installations. You can find the codes for your state at the link below.

Soldering copper pipe is not as difficult as a lot of people think it is. The number one requirement to a successful soldering experience is cleanliness. Thoroughly clean the inside of your connections with a wire reamer brush that you can buy at any hardware or plumbing supply store. Now thoroughly clean the out side of your pipe at least 1 inch beyond the end of the fitting with emery cloth or steal wool. It’s also not a bad idea to de bur the inside of the pipe with your pliers. Some pipe cutters come with a triangular blade sticking out of its back, this is a de burring tool. Use it to remove any debris left from cutting the pipe that may hinder the soldering and cause a leak.

The next step is to apply the flux. The flux acts as a cleaning and bonding agent so that the solder will adhere to the copper and form a good tight and strong joint. Be sure to apply the flux liberally and beyond the fitting to be sure no dirt or dry spots cause the solder to not stick properly.

After assembling your joint take your torch and with the tip of your flame heat the middle section of the fitting alternating sides for evenness. With your solder extended touch the joint. Keep heating until the solder melts. Now remove the heat and melt about 3/4 of an inch of solder into the joint. The heat will draw the solder into the fitting all around. You should see the solder as a ring around the entire joint. Now wipe off the excess with a rag and your done. Move on to the next joint simply repeating the same procedure.

Helpful Advice on Well Water Filtration

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Plumbing

Let’s face it! Unlike the old days, a well is no longer a source of pure, uncontaminated water for drinking and household use. Unfortunately, those days are long gone. The sources of the majority of wells have become seriously contaminated with fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides, and other chemicals. While filters for wells have been around for awhile the technology has changed and improved. If you’re looking into well water filtration I’d like to offer you some helpful advice that may make your search easier.

You’re probably familiar with distillation and reverse osmosis. These two systems have enjoyed popularity with consumers for years despite several inconvenient drawbacks. Fortunately, there is new technology that has eliminated these drawbacks in order to make well water filtration more effective, convenient, and affordable.

You see, the problem with reverse osmosis and distillation is that they are limited in the types of organic and inorganic contaminants that they are able to filter out. Only with the addition of a costly carbon filter that must be changed on a regular basis, can these two systems provide water that is clean enough for family use. However, just because it’s clean doesn’t mean it’s healthy.

You see, these two older systems have a serious problem that even a carbon filter can’t solve. Through their respective purification processes, minerals like calcium, potassium and magnesium, that are so important for good health, are stripped from the water. To put it simply, the water is rendered “dead.”

That is why many consumers are opting for a new technology called multistage filtration. This new approach to water purification has built upon the success of older technology by improving what works and getting rid of what doesn’t.

This means that multistage filtration gets rid of a much wider scope of organic and inorganic contaminants, without expensive add ons, while leaving important mineral content untouched. The appliances have been designed for ease of installation, maintenance and affordability. As a result effective well water filtration is accomplished without expensive, maintenance-intensive add-ons.

Ultimately, your family is provided with the safe, clean well water that is free from odor-causing sediments and full of health-supporting minerals.

Make no mistake about it. A new day has come for effective well water filtration. New purification technologies eliminate the worry of exposure to environmental contaminants that can put the health of your family at risk.

You’re next step? Take what you’ve learned here and use it as a basis for finding a well water filtration solution that can significantly improve the quality of life for you and your family. Visit my website to learn more about the multistage filtration appliances that I, personally, use and recommend.

Tankless Hydronic Heater – 4 Benefits of Owning a Tankless Water Heater

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Plumbing

Most residential homes have conventional water heaters in the 30 to 80 gallon capacity. Powered by either electricity or gas, these units pre-heat your water to the desired temperature setting and keep it available for use 24 hours a day. This means you constantly are spending money to heat this stored water whether you are at work, at home washing dished or sound asleep.

While modern water heater technology and tank design has reduced the number of times a heater must power on to maintain the proper temperature the basic operation remains the same. This means that if your family uses more than the average 30 gallons of hot water a day, you are in essence constantly spending money to heat up more and more water in your tank. And if you use less than the average, you are wasting money keeping water hot that you never use.

What is a Tankless Hydronic Heater?

A tankless heater is designed to act as an on-demand water heater that waits until you actually need hot water and then quickly bring the water to the right temperature. These tankless heaters or indirect water heaters as they are sometimes called are some of the the most economical and energy-efficient ways to supply hot water in a home.

How an indirect hydronic system works is easy to understand. When the hot water taps are turned on, water flows into heat exchanger unit. This triggers a water level sensor. When the water has reached a preset level, a small computer ignites the burner elements, which rapidly heats the water enclosed in the heat exchanger unit.

A typical hydronic heat exchanger uses water-filled copper tubing shaped like “fins” in order to create the maximum heat transfer possible. The water in copper tubes, once it reaches the desired temperature is then piped to the open hot water taps, via a special heat piping layout to reduce heat loss.

Once the taps are turned off the heater shuts off. This process results in an almost “instantaneous” stream of hot water always available for you and your family.

Tankless Hydronic Heater Advantage #1 – Compact size: Most tankless hydronic heaters are designed to installed on a wall and with a slim “footprint” can be placed almost anywhere in the home, not just the basement.

Tankless Hydronic Heater Advantage #2 – Saves on Energy Costs. If you have a large family and seem to need an “endless” flow of hot water, then a tankless heater will save you a bunch of money in water heating bills over the long run.

Tankless Hydronic Heater Advantage #3 – Can be used for in-floor heating. Another use for this type of hydronic heater is to pipe hot water underneath thermal mass flooring (stone, concrete or tile) where it is absorbed and slowly released into the above room as heat.

Tankless Hydronic Heater Advantage #4 – Use as an Outdoor Heater. Tankless hydronic heaters are good options for heating swimming pools, spas, hot tubs, garages, small buildings and even greenhouses.

After a successful life in trading, importing and exports, Rupert now spends his time writing freelance articles for many well-known publications, as well as various educational institutions. Garbage Disposal Repair – Simple Solutions For Simple Problems

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Plumbing

I hate to admit it but my wife taught me how to fix a garbage disposal. First, she taught me what not to put in there. And if you want to keep from having to mess with your food waste disposal, you might also want to know what not to put in there. And while some disposers are advertised as being able to handle about anything, it is probably best not to test it just to see. First, you shouldn’t put stringy vegetables in there. Two, any kind of grease or lard can also cause problems over time. And three, bones should not be put in a disposal.

Ok, so you forget or someone else (like the kids) puts something in there that shouldn’t be in there. Or you stuff too much in at a time (it’s best to put one thing in at a time). Or a fork or knife accidentally makes it way in. You flip the switch and no action. And all you get is a hum. What do you do? This is a problem that my wife taught me to fix on my own. It really is not that hard.

On my disposal there is a red reset button near the bottom of the unit. The hum means that the unit has tripped out due to the clog. You can wait just a few minutes, push the reset button and then turn the disposal on to see if it is working properly again. Often it will, but sometimes it will not.

So, there is a second step you can try that I learned when you’ve got a major obstacle jamming things up. And it might be a good idea to unplug the unit for this activity. Using some tongs, you can take out any large items in the disposer. Then with a long screwdriver, stick it down in there into one of the holes on the top of the unit. You might be able to break the jam lose by moving the screwdriver back and forth. If it works, take the screwdriver out, plug the unit back in (don’t forget that one!), push the reset button, turn on the water and turn on the disposal. You should be back in business.

There can be some other problems with disposals that will require calling a plumber. It really depends on how good you are working on things and how patient you are. If it requires much true plumbing or electrical work, I will call the pros.

By the way, as far as preventive maintenance another trick I have learned is to put ice and citrus rinds in the disposal from time to time. It helps to keep the blades sharp, reduces the bacteria and makes it smell better.

W. Green enjoys writing and developing helpful websites like his recent site http://www.bestgarbagedisposals.com/ where he reviews the best selling garbage disposals including the Whirlaway garbage disposal.

Why You Should Invest In Water Filters For Shower Heads

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Plumbing

When comparing water filters for shower heads, you will see that some do a better job than others at removing irritating and health threatening contaminants. There are shower filters for copper and chlorine, as well as lead, VOCs and THMs. High price is not always indicative of high quality.

We looked at five of the most popular water filters for shower heads and found dramatic differences. The prices range from $67.99 to $249.00. The most expensive filter reduces the flow rate and costs more per month to use, due mostly to the cost of replacement filter cartridges. More interesting was that the least expensive model was rated highly by Consumer’s Digest Magazine and does the same job that the most expensive one does.

Two of the five could not be categorized as shower filters for copper and chlorine, since they only blocked chlorine, not copper. In general, if a filter blocks lead, it blocks copper and if it does not block copper then it does not block lead. Lead is one of the more dangerous compounds find in our tap water.

It is unsafe for consumption at any level. It can be absorbed through the skin and inhaled in the form of vapor. Copper is safe at normal levels found in most ground water, but can change the smell or taste of drinking water and does stain porcelain fixtures at certain levels. That’s one reason that people use shower filters for copper and chlorine. They improve the smell and protect the bathroom fixtures.

Besides improving smell, there are several health reasons to block chlorine with water filters for shower heads. Chlorine vapors become concentrated in the closed bathroom during a hot shower. Research has shown that the vapors trigger asthma and allergy attacks.

When it reacts with other components of the steam, it becomes chloroform. The FDA has stated that most homes in America have a measurable amount of chloroform gas in the air. The cause: hot showers without chlorine water filters for shower heads. Symptoms of chloroform exposure include unexplained headaches and dizziness. The chemical vapors also irritate the delicate membranes of the nasal passages and will aggravate sinus problems.

Chlorine dries out the skin and hair. Anyone who has ever swum in a chlorinated swimming pool is aware of that fact. Shower filters for copper and chlorine originally became popular as beauty aids, because in a matter of days, users notice softer skin and hair. Hair is more manageable and less brittle. Less hair ends up falling out or being pulled out by the hair brush.

Now, we know that they water filters for shower heads are important health aids. Just make sure to shop around!

7 Common Plumbing Problems and Fixes

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Plumbing

Many homes, even brand new homes, can have plumbing problems. However, instead of getting a plumber involved, it is possible to fix many of these plumbing problems without professional help. Here are seven common plumbing problems, as well as how to fix them:

Lack of hot water

Plumbing problems related to water temperature always lead to your water heater. You might be able to turn up the thermostat on your water heater. However, your water heater may be clogged with calcium deposits, which limits the amount of hot water it can produce. In this event, it is possible to remove these deposits from most water heaters. Replacing the heating elements is can also restore hot water to your home. Another possibility is that the water heater is beyond repair and must be replaced.

Leaky faucet

A leaky faucet is one of the easiest plumbing problems to fix. The source of the leak is usually a bad seal in the faucet handle. Simply disassemble the faucet, replace the worn out part (usually a rubber gasket), and put it back together.

Clogged Toilet

A clogged toilet is among the list of common but easily solved, plumbing problems. Most clogged toilets can be fixed by plunging. However, if plunging the toilet does not alleviate the clog, serious plumbing problems could be the cause.

Toilet Does Not Flush Everything

If your toilet is not clogged, but does not flush everything, there may not be enough water to carry everything away. In the tank behind the toilet bowl, there is a float that controls how much water is used. Making the float sit higher so that more water is used should cure plumbing problems related to a weak flush.

Slow Draining Sinks

Most home remedies for slow draining sinks involve pouring some kind of solution down the drain to loosen deposits that slow the flow of water. Remedies for these plumbing problems include solutions from store bought drain cleaners to bleach or hot vinegar. Another way to solve and prevent these types of plumbing problems is to fill all the sinks with water and drain them all at once. The pressure caused by this volume of water can help push deposits out of your pipes.

Pipes under the Sink Leak

Before you tackle these plumbing problems, make sure the fixture with the leak is not clogged. If there is no clog, find the source of the leak. In the event that the leak is coming from the juncture of two pipes, try to tighten it. If this does not work, take the leaky section apart and check for stripped or damaged threads. Replacing a damaged part may be necessary, but wrapping the threads with Teflon tape will eliminate most leaky joints. However, if there is a crack in a pipe or appliance component, replacement is usually the only option.

Toilet Leaks from the Base

A toilet leak, if it is in fact coming from the base, can usually be fixed by replacing the wax ring that fits between the toilet and the floor. This can be relatively simply to do, unless the floor is uneven or something else prevents solid contact between the toilet and the wax ring.

Dealing with Common Plumbing Problems

Although fixing plumbing problems is not usually fun, you can save yourself a lot of money by not calling a plumber. Even if you do decide to get a plumber involved, diagnosing the problem can shorten the process and ensure that a plumber does not try to fix anything that is not broken.
