Hot Tub Heater – When it Comes Time to Replace It – Consider a More Efficient Model

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Pools & Spas

Once you have made your hot tub purchase, you will need to establish some kind of maintenance program. A key element of this program revolves around the heater. By maintaining a strict program of cleaning and servicing with chemicals and the like, the hot tub heater is likely to last significantly longer. However, you may at some point be faced with the prospect of heater replacement for any number of reasons.

Given rising energy costs, you may be interested in installing a heater that is more energy efficient. For the frequent hot tub user, a new and efficient heater can end up saving you a lot of money in the long run. If you make the determination to keep your current spa and decide to go for a new heater, get started soon because energy prices are only likely to increase over time.

Your options are limited mostly to gas or electric heaters. Each heater, regardless of the manufacturer, should be rated for energy efficiency. Check with your local dealer or reseller to help make the comparisons.  Another more expensive (at least initially) option is a solar powered heater. Depending on the brand or age of your spa, this may not be a feasible option. If you are really interested in going “green,” check out some of the newer models by Caldera, Bullfrog, CalSpa and the like for solar solutions. You may end up with a heater system that is integrated with your overall home solar solution.

If you have limited your heater choices to gas or electric, you will need to do a little investigating on your own. Generally speaking, gas is a more cost effective solution than electricity. However, due to the make of your hot tub, an electric heater may be your only choice. In that case shop around for the most efficient and least expensive heater that you can install on your spa. You will also need to factor in the amount of water that you are heating and the frequency that you use your tub to make a final choice.

Do you want to keep your hot tub’s water in an always heated state? Are you patient enough to wait for the water to heat up or do you want instant gratification? The answers to these questions and more will help you determine the appropriate heater for your tub.

For ease of use, electric heaters are a quick and easy solution.  The choices are simple for the kind of connection — 110 volt or 220 volt.  The outlets in most cases are held within the construction of the tub itself. Repairs to electric heaters, as a general rule, are quite easy. For frequent soakers, propane and gas heaters are thought to be more cost effective with only a few exceptions.

If you do encounter heater problems, always check to see if you hot tub is under warranty. Some of the newer high-end hot tub manufactures will include extended warranties that cover some parts for up to ten years. Likewise, with Caldera and Bull Frog hot tubs, for example, you will most likely have a heater that has a modern and highly efficient heat-transfer mechanism

Just knowing a little about heaters and other hot tub elements will help you appropriately assess your specific needs. Review what you want out of your hot tub and make your heater decision accordingly.

How to Buy a Whirlpool Tub

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Pools & Spas

Hot tubs are also called “whirlpool” because of the cycle of the water when being drained. But there is also a corporation called Whirlpool that makes hot tubs in addition to other kitchen and home appliances. They have been in this business since 1911 and they have explored a myriad of household solutions, thus the existence of their appliances today.

Like what you would do for any other appliance, you should scrutinize the features of the hot tub you are choosing. Before buying, contemplate of the benefits of using that brand. Here is a guide for you when choosing Whirlpool tub:

Step 1: Be a little picky on its assimilated tub system. When you are using this kind of tub, usually the water is forced out through air and up to 8 jets to massage your body. This is different from air-jets. Air-jets have small jets all over the tub so you have an all-body massage. The one from Whirlpool only targets specific areas. Choose one that will work well for your comfort.

Step 2: Know the size of tub you are getting. That will depend on where you intend to place the machine. If you are using it for outdoor use such as an alcove you have at home, you can go for the bigger models. Also scrutinize the wirings. Does it need a platform or a deck? Should it be surrounded with tiles? These things will cost you more so you should be prepared for the additional expenses.

Step 3: The size has to fit your body too. If you intend to use this as a family tub, it should accommodate the number of your family members. You can go to showrooms and test it. Make sure it can support your back properly. Some people purchase tubs with smaller back rests so they end up with freezing upper body part.

Step 4: Also scrutinize the additional features. What types of jets were used? Some models use advanced jets that can really project water and massage your body. Some have sensors that will immediately stop motor from running when it notices that it water is stuck. You should also look for those with slip resistant features so you can get in and out of the tub effortlessly.

Step 5: Know your budget. Before buying, already have a clear idea of how much tubs cost. It depends on the size and the features but the simple ones costs $1,000 and soars to more than $15,000 for the more upscale ones.

How to Go About Buying a Swimming Pool Cover

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Pools & Spas

If you own a swimming pool, a swimming pool cover is an accessory that you simply can’t afford not to buy. As a result, this article is going to describe the 2 purposes a cover serves, as well as provide a few tips in an attempt to save you money when you do buy one.

Very simply, a pool cover will provide you with peace of mind. This is because a cover can be a very effective barrier against a child entering the pool while unsupervised. Even though we always try to watch our children around the pool, there are numerous incidents of small children drowning each year while they were unsupervised.

The second purpose of a pool cover is to keep leaves and other debris from entering your pool. A cover, if used properly, will dramatically reduce the amount of cleaning that you will have to do.

Now that we have convinced you to buy a pool cover, how do you go about doing so? Let’s provide a few tips.

First, we recommend that you buy your swimming pool accessories from a reputable online seller. While brick and mortar pool stores have various products, an online vendor will usually have a much bigger selection of choices. As a note of caution, you should make sure you are buying from a reputable vendor (to help, you can always check with the Better Business Bureau).

Second, to get the best price on your cover, you should search for coupons from the vendor you are considering buying from. You will be very surprised how often you will find coupons (usually in the form of no shipping charge).

Third, you should already have measured your pool’s dimensions to ensure you are getting the right sized cover. Whatever you do, make sure you do not get a pool cover that is too small. It is always better to get a cover that is too large than one that is too small.

Next, you should decide what type of cover you want. Do you want a solar pool cover, a winter pool cover, a mesh cover, or a vinyl cover? These are questions you should consider before adding an item to your online shopping cart.

Lastly, as with anything you buy online, you should comparison shop between websites. If you follow this step alone, you can save a boatload of money.

If you follow these four tips, we are sure that you will be able to get the best pool cover at the best price. So, what are you waiting for? Start your search today.

Chemical Free Swimming Pools

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Pools & Spas

The chemical chlorine is the most widely used and effective method of sanitizing a swimming pool or spa. Typically a pool owner must buy, transport, store and handle the caustic chemical during the water treatment process, and the presence of the chemical in the water often causes problems for swimmers. There are several alternatives available today to the traditional routine of pool maintenance that may also improve water quality for the people that use the pool. The use of a chlorine generator eliminates the need for handling chlorine in its hazardous form.

A chlorine generating device produces chlorine by using low-voltage electrolysis of dissolved salts in the water via an electrode unit installed in the pool’s plumbing. This small electric current breaks water down into its basic components: hydrogen and oxygen. Common chlorine is generated when granulated salt is added to the mix. Two popular brands of chlorine generators are AquaRite and Intex.

There are two types of chlorine generators in use in residential swimming pools: the brine unit and a unit that requires salt to be added directly to the water. The brine unit has a chlorine generating unit that is usually located in the pool equipment area. The brine unit relies on brine blocks, which are housed in the chlorine producing cell. The produced chlorine is injected directly into the pool. The brine units are less commonly used than the alternative design, because they tend to be messy and produce undesirable by-products.

The second type of unit, the type requiring that salt be added directly to the pool water, is more commonly used. There are two versions of this unit, differing only in installation location of the components.

Chlorine generators have clear benefits. Since the best units require that the pool’s pump runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, they produce chlorine constantly. This constant addition of chlorine into the water prevents the build-up of algae and waterline scum. Eliminating the necessity of buying and handling hazardous chlorine chemicals is a bonus. The pool water feels smooth; many people compare swimming in a pool equipped with a chlorine generator to taking a shower in soft water. The cost of generating chlorine is lower than purchasing it.

No pool is without maintenance and there are, of course, drawbacks to using a chlorine generator. Obviously, the water is still chlorinated, so swimmers will experience all of the problems typically associated with swimming in chlorinated water including dry skin, irritated eyes, discolored hair and damaged swimming suits. Chlorine generators tend to produce by-products that raise the pH of the pool water to a level which renders chlorine ineffective as a sanitizer. The pH of the pool must be carefully monitored, and hydrochloric acid is typically added to the water to lower the pH. Handling and storing hydrochloric acid is as undesirable as handling and storing chlorine.

The bottom line is that while chlorine generators may produce swimming water with a more pleasant quality and may eliminate the need for handling chlorine, these generators are a new way of using chlorine to sanitize water, not an alternative to it.

The smallest part of the system, typically a bracelet or wristband of some kind, needs to be placed on your child or your pet; the bands are highly secure, so they will not be able to come off unless there is the assistance of an adult.

If your child comes in close proximity of the pool or happens to fall in, the alarm will sound. This type of system has helped in keeping numerous children from drowning, and it also furnishes the parents with the peace of mind that there will be advanced warning in the event of a possible dangerous situation. Portable Hot Tub Spas And Their Accessories

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Pools & Spas

While standard hot tubs have been around for many years, they have several disadvantages when it comes to size, weight and moving options. That is why many people are looking into portable hot tub spas lately and of course because it will be easier for them to get that hour of hydrotherapy anywhere. However, before going out and buying one, there are several things you should know about them to be sure you are making the right choice. As their name suggests, portable hot tub spas have the advantage of being able to carry them around and to easily take them off and install them in another location and they come with a variety of accessories that come in handy and are easy to carry around. You can easily move them from one place to another and if you are constantly on the move, a portable hot tub spa may be the right choice for you. When you are selling your house, you can very well pack it up and take it with you wherever you will move next, especially if you have invested a significant amount of money in it and you do not want to sell it together with the house.

However, things are no that simple when it comes to portable hot tub spas. Just like with any portable thing, chances are that it will not be as robust and strong as a fixed, solid hot tub. Indeed, when you are buying a fixed tub you need to carefully consider the place where it will be located, the amount of space it will take up and the effort of taking it apart afterwards. When buying a portable hot tub spa things are easier in this regard, as you can move it from one corner to another of your property. If the weather gets worse, you can simply take it apart and store it in a secure place until the meteorological conditions are favorable to set it up again. In this way you can avoid many of the problems related to cleaning it after an unexpected storm or after you have been away for a longer period of time. Dirt and residue (such as leaves, dust and other external factors) are the worst enemies of any hot tub, as they can easily enter the pump and damage it. Properly maintaining your hot tub is vital if you want it to function properly for many years. In addition, portable hot tub spas have a significant advantage when it comes to protecting it against bad weather, as you can simply put it away whenever you consider it necessary.

Therefore, when it comes to maintaining and moving around, a portable hot tub spa may sound like a very good idea. However, there are also downsides to owning one. Firstly, a portable hot tub spa will never be as sturdy and solid as a fixed one, no matter which manufacturer you choose. Solid hot tubs are usually made of plastic or fiber and they are very resistant when it comes to hits and other impacts. You have to be very careful with your portable hot tub spa if you want it to last for many years. Yes, you can move it around, but you must be extra careful when installing it and when putting it away to keep it away from any direct hits. Their weight can also be a problem, but this is the case of very large portable hot tub spas. Most portable ones weigh less than 300 lbs, making it easy for you to carry it around and to install it as often as you want.

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Pools & Spas

If you want to find a fantastic solar pool heating system and get all the benefits, then you should look into it carefully before you head out to buy products. Even if you are just buying a solar pool heating panel this is a process that you should take very seriously, so that you can find a quality product at a great price.

When it comes to home comforts nothing can beat your own personal swimming pool, one that you can be proud of and enjoy with your famiy. It will also add value to your property. Not only is it a lot of fun and a natural way to get a tan, but swimming is a great form of exercise that helps to keep you fit and in shape.

Do Your Research Properly

There are many ways to use solar power, and you may be astounded at the number of different products available for pool heating. There are some very important factors that you must decide upon before anything else. Keep in mind your target of finding the right solar heating system for your pool, with this in mind don’t be overwhelmed and use the following points to help you choose.

  • Heater Size – This will depend on the size of you pool, certainly if your pool is large then you will need a system that will provide it with enough energy to heat it sufficiently. If it is a small pool then you will be better off spending less money on a smaller system that will heat it without much excess.
  • Stye – You can choose to style you pool and heating system to your taste. This might involve you choosing the products that fit in with the style of your pool.
  • Maximum Temperature – How hot you want your pool will be important when decding on the equipment that you will use.

So make sure you have are fairly clear on what you want before you start hunting for and spending any money on the perfect setup or kit.  Keep these points in mind at all times, and use these considerations as a starting point when choosing equipment and/or set-up.

There Are Lots of Benefits

The main benefits of having a solar powered pool heating system:

  • Zero Cost – The initial cost of setting up your system is easily offset within a couple of months, leaving you to enjoy your swimming pool with free heating.
  • Good for the environment – Using solar power is the cleanest form of energy consumption. Conventional forms of energy generated from fossil fuels emitt harmful greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which cause climate change and minor (and some major) health issues. Using solar energy does not contribute to this, it is in a sense the purest form of energy because virtually all energy on Earth is derived from the input of the Sun.
  • Low maintenance requirements – Your solar setup should require very little maintenance, and when it does come the time it is very easy to accomplish.

There are many more benefits such as the privalege of being able to go for a dip whenever you want. Any one with a personal swimming pool should seriously consider installing their own solar heating system to reap the benefits on offer.

Keep You Pool Clean

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Pools & Spas

The right maintenance for your pool begins with an understanding of what it takes to keep your pool clean. With most pools, you can add in self maintaining options for the water, which allows you to keep the debris and dirt out of the pool. However, there are certain elements that may get into your pool that is unable to go through the filters, pumps or other self maintenance additions. Making sure you compliment pool maintenance with chemicals helps to maintain the water, providing for completely clean swimming.

The basic idea behind any chemical that you use in your pool is to sterilize the water and to get rid of the specific problems that may collect in water, such as bacteria, algae and micro debris. Even if you have a continuous suction system, this is essential for the overall health of the water as suction systems and pumps sometimes are unable to detect and pull out the smaller substances in your water. Adding this in on a weekly basis will instantly assist with taking out the difficult spots in the water and ensures that you don’t collect elements from swimming that you don’t want to.

The main chemical that you want to use in any fresh water pool is chlorine. This is known to sterilize the water and immediately causes debris and other elements to be removed from the pool. Putting this into the pool once a week and letting it sit in the water for fifteen minutes before you use the area allows you to get even more out of clean water. This chemical is designed to remove bacteria, sterilize the water you are in and remove algae that may be building up in your pool and can’t be removed through other means.

The second chemical to consider for your pool is alkaline powder. This is used to balance out the chlorine that you are placing in the water. Once you place chlorine in your water, it changes the pH level that is in the water. When this occurs, the cement, metal and basic foundation of the pool is exposed to a higher acidic level in the pool. This causes erosion to occur and makes it so your pool foundation may not last as long and the pool water will not stay clean from the erosion. Adding in a small amount of the alkaline powder allows you to get the best results from the balance in your pool.

With these two main components, are extras you can consider to further balance out your pool. There are tablets that are available that have a compound balance of minerals that help pool water to stay clear, clean and balanced. Algaecides, oxidizers and sanitizers are often included in these chemicals. This is combined with soda ash, sodium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate used to balance out the water pH from chlorine and the outside elements. Finding specific tablets that have a mixture of these ensures complete cleaning and balance of your water and allows you to keep even the smallest bacteria out of your water.

If you are interested in finding the best in balance for your water, then relying on more then one source for cleaning is essential. Looking into the chemicals that provide you with a complete cleaning of the hard to see substances and combining this with a balance in water pH helps to keep your pool healthy and clean without the main problems that may dive into your water.

Filtering Out the Water – Basics of Swimming Pool Filters

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Pools & Spas

Finding the right way to keep your pool clean begins with getting into the automated systems and ideals that fit best with your pool. There are several options that are available to get the debris and dirt out of your swimming pool on a continuous basis. Finding one that works effectively is the beginning to enjoying even more of the waters that you are in. One of the most common options for keeping your water clean is through the use of swimming pool filters.

Filters work more efficiently then almost any other type of cleaning system because of the design they carry. They are able to pull the debris and dirt outside of the water, which filters out the bad water, without taking the good water that is in the pool. This is combined with a second system that is able to keep the water level at a certain height by adding in new water. This basic concept is one of the simplest ways to keep the swimming pool clean without having to worry about putting extra systems inside the pool.

If you are considering the option of swimming pool filters, then you want to begin with looking into the possibilities for building what you need at the beginning of construction. One of the simplest possibilities for adding in filters is to have them built in with the initial pouring with the cement foundation. When doing this, a space can be left to insert the filters into the main system, making it easier to add this into the main plumbing system you are using. Typically, planning this out helps to create an efficient option for building the pool that is needed.

When considering this option, you can also look at different approaches that are a part of the swimming pool filters. For instance, if you know there will be specific types of debris, then you can specify this through the filters being added into the construction of the pool. Typically, filters are able to pull out the right type of debris through a grid that is placed in the filter. The grid is measured by a certain number of centimeters that siphon out specific components while leaving others. Making sure you have a variety of filters, as well as ways to add in alternatives, is a simplistic way to add even more to your filtering system.

Another option to consider with the different types of filters is how they function to remove the debris. For instance, certain types of cleaners will backwash the filter by rinsing out the clean water and dumping out the debris that moves through the filter. This helps to process what is needed for cleaner water. Other filters work as a cartridge system by putting a low amount of pressure on to pull in the dirt and debris. Other types work with the grids that filter through specific doorways to let the dirt move outside the system.

With whatever type of system you choose for your swimming pool, you can be sure to get only the best by defining what works and how it is used within your pool. Knowing what is available, how it works and what is needed from the very beginning ensures that you are able to only get the cleanest look with your pool, while maintaining the systems needed in a specific way. The result is the ability to create a better system for maintaining your pool.
