Deciding Where To Add A Conservatory Or Orangery To Your House
Deciding where to have a conservatory on your property can be difficult. The location of where you would like the conservatory is often dictated by the planned use of the conservatory. If you want to use it as a dining room or kitchen extension it obviously needs to be near the current kitchen, if you are using it as a snug or office it doesn’t matter too much, if you want to use it as a sun room then you want the conservatory to be south-facing.
This guide will cover the relevant points for adding a conservatory to the rear of your property, the front of the property and finally the side of the property.
Front Of Property – Building a conservatory on the front of the property is the least common option. This is for several reasons. Firstly the conservatory is largely a glazed construction which will therefore make the inside of your house visible to everyone walking or driving past your property. One option would be to have an orangery rather than a conservatory as this will provide a low wall which would then block out from people walking by. As well as not being ideal for the owner, the chances are that you would need to apply for planning permission, which would likely be declined unless you have a very large front garden.
Side Of Property – This has pretty much the same problems as the front of property conservatory, however will be slightly more private and more likely to have planning permission approved. By building off the side you will not have as much space, and may lose access to the rear garden without going through your property which could cause issues.
Rear Of Property – The most popular and most common place to have your conservatory built. This allows your conservatory to be a private area without worrying about people looking through and is also far more likely to have the planning permission approved. The only downside of having the conservatory built at the rear of the property is that it may not be off the room you want, or may not face the direction that you want it to.
If you are unsure about the suitability of having a conservatory on your property, the easiest thing is to ask a designer from a local conservatory company to come and look at your house as they will be able to tell you your best options and also advise on potential problems for each option.
