How To Choose The Best Roofing Type for Your Home

Published by under Roofing

When choosing an Oklahoma roofer, you need a company that knows the right type of roofing material to fit the weather patterns for your location. The following are the most common types of roofing materials and how they would hold up against Oklahoma weather.

Residential Roofing

Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles are the most popular roofing material because they are inexpensive and the most durable. Although they will hold up against rough Oklahoma weather, the asphalt granules used to make them don’t last long and are harmful to the environment. You may want to invest in a longer lasting, more environmentally friendly roof.

Fiberglass Shingles

Fiberglass shingles are similar to asphalt, except the felt base used in asphalt shingles is replaced with inorganic fiberglass, which makes them extremely durable and resistant to fire and rot. They are relatively inexpensive, however, the environmental impact is high, so consider other materials if you’re looking for a green-friendly house.

Tiles

Any Oklahoma roofer will tell you that tile is the roofing material that will last the longest with the least amount of maintenance. Both clay and concrete tiles are very durable, fire and rot resistant, and come in different colors. Tile roofs require little maintenance, but installation is difficult and should only be done by a professional. Tiles are also very heavy, so they should be used on buildings or homes with good structural integrity. A tile roof is perfect for an Oklahoma home if you can afford it.

Slate

Slate is another long lasting, durable material, but its weight is a major downfall. Also, slate can’t withstand very much weight, so heavy snow or ice could cause the roof to crack. Homeowners should be prepared to perform frequent maintenance and cleaning on slate roofs.

Wood Shakes

Wood shakes are usually made out of cedar and must be professionally installed and well-maintained if you want them to last. Shakes provide good insulation, but are susceptible to decay and fire, and generally more expensive than other materials. Unless you plan on spending a great deal of time treating and maintaining your roof, cedar shakes may not the best choice for you.

Commercial Roofing

Metal Roofs

Like slate and tile, metal roofing is unparalleled in its ability to stand up to the elements. Metal roofing also comes in a large number of styles and colors, making it a versatile roofing choice.

Flat Roofs

Flat roofs are very common for warehouse-type commercial structures. The main drawback is the tendency to pool water, so when looking for an Oklahoma roofing company, make sure you find one that knows the rain patterns and installs your roof accordingly.

Composition Roofing

Composition roofs are commonly found on retail stores, banks, and other high-end business structures. They are more attractive than a flat or metal roof and, if properly installed, provide great protection against the weather.

Research different roofing professionals, compare rates and products, and read reviews from past clients. It’s a little extra work, but choosing an Oklahoma roofer you can trust will save you time and money in the long run.

Gutter Maintenance – Damage Caused by Clogs

Published by under Roofing

Now that the summer months are fading, the leaves are beginning to turn a stunning golden brown and soon the autumn winds will bring them falling from their branches. Most will of course land harmlessly on the ground, covering the sidewalks, patios, and driveways but some will land in your gutter systems.

Leaves, moss and mud accumulating in your gutters are the major reason gutters get blocked and will require cleaning. Cleaning gutters can be dangerous (particularly if you have limited experience of climbing up and down ladders) and it can also be rather messy work. But regardless of how high your gutters are or how messy cleaning them can be, it is vital that your home gutters are kept free from leaves and silt. If your gutters are not properly maintained and if they become clogged to the extent that water from your roof is unable to drain freely down the downpipes they will start to overflow.

Over flowing gutters left too long can create serious damage to the exterior and interior of your property and cost many thousands of pounds to rectify.

It is vital that your roof draining system is working correctly to let water flow to the ground and away from the foundations of your home. If you feel uncomfortable working at top-of-ladder heights or you can’t find the time to do your own gutter cleaning, then it is far better to hire a professional outdoor cleaning company to clean your gutters than to have to pay a significantly higher price further down the line – because of water damage to your property.

Blocked gutters that overflow can cause all sorts of problems to a building but the most difficult and expensive problem to fix is the repair work that may be needed to the foundations of your home.

The foundations of all buildings can become compromised by water erosion stemming from overflowing gutters. Water erosion can be aggravated if the ground freezes during the winter then thaws during the summer months. The expansion and contraction of your property’s foundations will undoubtedly create cracks in both the exterior and interior walls of your home. Unfortunately, cracks forming in your outer walls will in turn allow more rain-water to penetrate your walls, and the situation starts to worsen.

However, none of this is necessary and can quite easily and effectively be avoided by simply doing a routine gutter clean.

Some property maintenance specialists advise cleaning your gutter system at least once a year or twice a year. But how regularly you need to do a gutter clean will depend on how many trees you have growing around your home and how close they are to your property.

Many home owners like to do their own gutter cleaning (and some even look forward to it) and others prefer contracting a professional commercial gutter cleaning company to do the job for them. There is one thing for certain: getting your gutters cleaned on a regular basis can be a lot cheaper, and a lot less trouble than having to repair the damage a leaking gutter can cause.

A Vinyl Tarp Keeps Moisture In And Out

Published by under Roofing

Generally, a vinyl tarp provides the most efficient and effective protection against the elements. Normally, they are used as a covering to prevent moisture from damaging spaces, things or places. Interestingly, vinyl tarps are used widely in the agricultural industry to protect against moisture loss into the ground in excavated sites.

Moisture loss on excavated, agricultural sites is due more to seepage than it is to evaporation. Some are designed as liners and can be manufactured as large as 30,000 feet per panel. This size of tarpaulin would remind one of those used as circus tents.

Depending upon their designated use, the thickness and density of these liners will vary. The thickness will be determined by the amount of moisture to be retained. In these circumstances, the weight will vary from 3 ounces to 12 ounces per square yard.

Often a vinyl tarp will be partially or completely exposed to the sun over a period of time. When this is a concern, the fabric should be pretreated with UV ray resistant material during manufacture to avoid premature damage. They are also extremely tear-resistant and strong enough to resist damage from punctures, abrasion and wind.

In general, the most valuable properties would be mold and mildew resistance and tear proofing. Strongly reinforced grommets and edges are invaluable if it is one which will be in use over a long period of time. It would also be wise to ensure that the grommets and the material is rust-proof. These are invaluable considerations for homeowners, campers, motor-cycle, bicycle, car and truck owners, farmers and construction companies, to name a just a few who will depend on this type of protection.

The vinyl tarps are available in a vast selection of muted and bright colors. Some are more suited for use out of doors. Custom orders are offered by some manufacturers and some offer private, or perhaps “designer” grade, labeling.

Whether used as a lining or a vinyl tarp covering, the consumer would need to shop around for the product most suitable for their needs. Some reflect the sun’s light and heat on one side and some are slightly more aesthetically appealing than others. In the final analysis, the material, weave, size, color and cost of a vinyl tarp will depend ultimately on the intended purpose and application.

Hail Damaged Roof – Professional Tips That Will Save You Time And Money

Published by under Roofing

Roof damage due to hail is quite common. If you too own a home, you can save a considerable amount on your roof repair by taking some proactive steps to protect your roof against hail damage. By taking definitive steps to mitigate the affect of these frozen balls of precipitation on your roof, you not only ensure longer life of your roof but lesser roof repair expenses as well. For instance, it will be a good idea to invest in hail resistive roofing materials.

To help you judge the seriousness of matter you should know that in the recent times, hail storms have produced baseball-sized hail. These have already caused extensive damage to roofs of residential properties in major cities as well as the suburbs. Given the size of the hail, you can easily imagine the degree of damage that they can cause to your roof, especially if it is made of asphalt shingles.

It loosens the protective granular surface of the shingles and makes them highly susceptible to cracking and breaking. Unless you remove the hail from your roof almost immediately after the storm has ended there is a high chance that your roof will also show signs of water seepage. This in turn can lead to dampness, leaking roofs and discoloration of the ceiling and the attic.

In order to fix the hail damage caused to your roof, call a professional roofing contractor in your area to do a thorough inspection and identify and remedy any roofing problem caused by hail. The down spouts are most likely to be show signs of hail damage. Hence inspect them more carefully. If you see any dings in gutters, you need to ascertain the extent of hail damage caused to them and fix it.

In case your roof has undergone serious wear and tear due to a hail storm, you can file a claim with your homeowners’ insurance provider to recover the amount that you will end up paying for roof repair or replacement. If you install a Class IV hail resistant roof in your home, you can not only restrict the degree of hail damage to your roof but also lower your home insurance premium significantly. As for repairing roof hail damage, it is strongly recommended that you contact certified contractors who know their job inside out.

Why Homeowners Should Consider Fibreglass Roofing This Autumn

Published by under Roofing

With the summer now already little more than a memory, and damp autumn days well on the way, it’s a good idea to start thinking about the advantages of fibreglass roofing in places such as porches, car bays, sheds and garages. In fact GRP roofing is ideal for extensions, shelters, canopies and flat roofing where traditionally you may have a roof constructed of a wooden frame with either tiles or felt roofing providing protection.

Because we haven’t had an enormous amount of rain during the summer most flat roofs have had little to content with. But as the weather forecasts suggest that we could be in for a very wet autumn, not to mention winter, those flat roofs and roofs of sheds and porches are likely to be in for something of a hammering.

Fibreglass roofing provides an affordable alternative that can either be fitted over the existing roof, or used as a complete replacement to the existing roof, providing the level of protection necessary to deal with the wet weather. In the UK felt roofing is far from ideal, because of the amount of rain we get it is invariably the case that flat roofs which had been covered with felt roofing will start to warp and buckle, resulting in pooling of water.

If you have an extension with a flat roof, or a porch with a flat roof, you may well have noticed last winter and during the early spring that there were often puddles gathering somewhere on the roof. Even if you look out now the chances are high that you will moss growing where those bubbles gathered. But of course the problem only ever gets worse, because as soon as you have water gathering on a flat roof, the weight of that water increases the pressure on the felt roofing, causing it to stretch and expand and distort even more.

This results in more water being able to pool and gather, until eventually the felt roofing simply tears or cracks, instantly allowing water to enter the roof cavity. As soon as this happens the wooden beams or wooden framework quickly absorb the water and begin expanding, warping, twisting and distorting. If you let a roof gets to this stage then it is only a matter of time before you start finding mildew reaching through to the interior of the house, along with all the moisture, spores and health problems which that introduces.

Only quite recently there were two highlighted cases in the media of people dying as a direct result of moisture seeping in through a flat roof resulting in spores growing on the interior walls. It’s more than just a wallpaper problem, it’s a serious health hazard.

But because fibreglass roofing is completely waterproof, and because GRP roofing is fitted in such a way that prevents any water from having any chance at all of either seeping through seams or pooling, you can be confident that not only is your home protected, but so is your family.

Today fibreglass roofing is available in a wide range of colours and styles, many of which can provide a look which is indistinguishable from traditional roofing such as tiles or even lead roofing. This means that whether you have a new property or an older property, there is bound to be a type of GRP roofing which is able to provide an attractive and sympathetic visual appearance whilst also providing the protection which all flat rooms need in order to cope with the water that is undoubtedly on its way this autumn.

Not only is fibreglass roofing the most affordable form of roofing there is, it is 100% waterproof, and virtually maintenance free. Fibreglass roofing and GRP roofing will also last a very great deal longer than either tiles or felt roofing will, provided the ideal solution for any home in the UK that doesn’t have a 50 foot umbrella attached to the chimney.

If you would like to know more about fibreglass roofing or are interested in finding out how GRP roofing can provide your home with adequate protection this autumn, visit Architectural Fibreglass Mouldings Ltd.

Roofing Repairs & More – How To Find a Contractor

Published by under Roofing

As a homeowner, you are responsible for a lot. Upkeep of property can be costly, stressful and time-consuming. Regular maintenance can help you to avoid large repairs down the road. Exterior maintenance is particularly important as this can mean the difference of staying warm and dry or being stuck in a leaky home. Making sure that the caulking is in good shape around windows and doors ensures that drafts stay out. Checking your roofing for leaks and worn areas will prevent water from infiltrating your home. Calling a professional for repairs may be a little more costly upfront than doing it yourself would be, but remember to think about the payoff in the long run.

By hiring a pro to maintain the exterior of your home, you are ensuring the use of top of the line products and expert service. If you notice a draft coming from around the bay window in the living room, you would want to call in a caulking specialist. He will use a caulk that holds up through varying weather conditions and stays flexible through shrinkage and expansion.

If you suspect roofing damage, you certainly want to call a licensed (in states where required) and insured roofer in. Using a handyman service to make repairs to a roof can be a costly mistake. First of all, if he does not do the work properly, you end up paying a pro to come in and do the job a second time anyway. Another consideration is liability insurance. What happens is a contractor falls off of your roof? If he is not insured, you (being the property owner) can be sued.

How do I Choose the Best Person for the Job?
You will want to hire someone who is knowledgeable in his field. It does not hurt to do a little research on the issue at hand prior to having an estimate done. While the contractor is there giving you a quote, ask questions. Get a feel for his level of expertise. A skilled tradesman should be able to answer questions directly-no stalling involved. If you are not comfortable with the answers, simply thank him and move on to the next company.

Get Proof
Always ask for a certificate of liability insurance. Follow up by calling the insurance company to make sure the policy is current. Check into the validity of the business license number provided. Also, ask for the names of at least two references. Call the people referenced and ask a few questions such as: Did they feel the company was professional? Did they leave the job clean? How did the materials/repairs hold up? If this was a roofing job, did the leak stop and how is it doing now?

This may seem like quite a process to go through in order to get repairs done on your home, but when you are talking about time and money, it is best to do it right the first time. Whether you need siding, roofing, window or caulking repairs done, do your homework before you hire.

Go Green With Your Roof and Get Tax Benefits

Published by under Roofing

I have seen many people reap the benefits of having a reliable Salt Lake City roofer in more ways than one. Often, one only thinks of a roofer as someone who needs to be called whenever there is a roof repair or construction job, but few know that he can also help save a considerable amount of money in the form of tax benefits that are being offered by the government.

Yes, that is right, you can get tax benefits for having a roof constructed, but not just any roof will do, it has to be a green roof, i.e., an environment-friendly option that is being promoted by the federal government in homes across the United States by giving homeowners that implement such roofing options tax benefits as incentives. If you ask any Salt Lake City roofer, he is going to explain to you that green roofs basically refer to rooftop gardens and patio spaces that allow the homeowner to qualify for the tax credits. Also, one can talk to his/her tax consultant regarding the same, to know more details on how the construction has to be done, etc. although the roofer is more than certain to know all the details, since it is his domain primarily.

Another fantastic money-saving option is to install a water collection system that can harvest rain water that can be used for watering the roofs. However, while all that is certainly great, one needs to ensure that the Salt Lake City roofer that has to be hired is a skilled person who knows how to do the job properly. The most effective way to find out about him is to ask for references and check them on phone or by visiting the premises. One can also approach bodies like the Better Business Bureau, but I would still recommend references as the best option. Also, be sure to check for references pertaining to the task you are asking him to do. It might be possible that he is excellent in other kinds of roofing jobs, but could be doing a green roof for the first time!

Some Useful Tips on Choosing the Best Roofing Company

Published by under Roofing

As a homeowner it is really a painful situation if you are suffering from leakage problem in your roof. Then you may want to replace the entire roof or repair the leakage. If you are determined to change the roof then you should consider some simple advice at the time of choosing the roofing company for yourself. Finding the best roofing company is not that hard but it requires some time. There is a lot of roofing contractor and roofing companies in the market so sometimes it seems really confusing to choosing the right one. It really needs some researches because you have to take out the best work from them within your estimated budget.

First thing you have to do is get minimum 3 estimates from various companies but you should not chose the lowest one immediately because initially you need to do is little researches.

When you are going to select the company that time you should look some important things about the company such as when can they start, how long they will take to complete the project, they have the license or not and if you face any problem then they will repair it or not. You should ask them directly and they are bound to give you the answer. It is very important to know about their credentials. It does not matter that lowest priced company is the best. You should know that it may take some extra cash than the actual contract and the terms and conditions of the contract are very important so you should understand it very clearly. Before signing the contract you need to talk with them about the safety issue. There is always risk that someone could get hurt during the work day so safety comes first. Maintenance is Critical to Roofing Longevity

Published by under Roofing

When it comes to extending the life of the roof on your industrial or commercial building, prevention is the best medicine. Much like how following a routine maintenance schedule ensures better upkeep of your car, so too does caring for the roof on your commercial or industrial building. To avoid costly replacement, taking simple maintenance measures, and addressing minor problems before they have a chance to swell into larger problems, is essential.

Commercial roofs throughout Northern Virginia and Maryland made of sheet metal, asphalt, pea gravel or any other material have at least one thing in common. They are all susceptible to occasional lapses in effectiveness. Similarly, all are less likely to require complete replacement if minor problems are handled immediately by a professional. A leaky roof, even one that lets in only small traces of water, can do major damage to your building’s interior.

If not treated promptly, a job that could have required a simple quick-fix can develop into one that requires more than simply installing a new roof. Water damage to your building’s infrastructure can lead to needing new ceiling tiles, drywall, electrical work and carpet. This is bad enough without mentioning potentially damaged inventory, office equipment or personal items. Suddenly, a job that might have run you in the hundreds can easily swell into the thousands, and beyond.

But if nearly undetectable leaks can cause such a major damage, how can you repair what you don’t realize is broken? Simple. Regular inspections of your property can enable a trained professional to pinpoint an issue that the untrained eye might have missed. This will allow you to act on a small problem before it grows into a big one.

Trained professionals know what to look for, and have the skills to recognize trouble spots that building owners, office managers, and even building superintendents might sometimes miss. By putting your building on a regular, routine preventative inspection program, you increase the chance that a minor problem will be detected early. In retrospect, no one wants to suffer the consequences of inattentiveness. Being proactive reduces the chance that it will develop into a large-scale, costly replacement project.

Roofing systems are an often-forgotten building feature, the part of the structure that too often gets too little attention. Out of sight, the roof is sometimes easy to overlook while maintenance is directed toward more noticeable features like facades, lighting, and even landscaping. However, above it all, it’s the all-important shelter for investments like computer systems and inventory, the critical shield that typically gets taken for granted. Given that high-ranking responsibility, doesn’t it make sense that you protect the one thing that’s protecting so much of yours?
