Home Security Methods

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Security

It should not cost so much if you want to keep your home safe and secure.

Here are just some of the tips you should consider if you want to keep your home secure without having to spend much money. Keep your house safe while at the same time, stay within your budget.

Many break-ins are attempted from the front door. Therefore, if you have an alarm at your front door you will be able to curtail this theft. Of course, there is no need to have alarms all around the home because the door area is already a good start. The other point is to make sure that you get the battery-operated kind. These will run efficiently without increasing your bills. They will go off at any slight break-in attempt.

Run and get deadbolts for both your front and backdoor. There is no reason why you should keep gambling your security with those small and lightweight security locks you probably have had for a long time. You windows too can have them.

If you have a sliding door you can still have this reinforced with new and additional locks at the top and the bottom to avoid making a gamble with security on your standard issue hook locks. Anti lift, devices work well with these kinds of doors. You should consider these if you have not.

Having a dark house and compound is also a come get me plea to the buglers. To ensure that you are safe, you should buy lighting to make sure your front yard, your lawn and driveway are well lit. While selecting these, make sure you pick the sunlight-powered lights. These will save you on bills.

A single solar powered light will also work the trick if you do not feel like spending on a whole compound lighting system.

It is difficult for a thief to have an easy time getting into your home if you have a good fence. You should get a fence as security and have a live one if you are not ready to put a perimeter wall. A thorny fence is the right recipe for keeping intruders at bay.

You can have both a beautiful compound and a safe compound by settling for plants that have both aesthetic features and thorns. Holly or rose are good examples of this. These two can really sting if a burglar brushes against them even slightly.

If you have a large collection of books, consider getting a telescopic ladder or a library ladder.

Mace Pepper Spray – Preparing Yourself For Bad Situations

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Security

Even if you never have to use it, purchasing Mace pepper spray to keep ready in your home, glove compartment, purse or backpack can give you more confidence and peace of mind if you ever find yourself in an uncomfortable area or situation. While the best practice is to avoid situations where you might feel unsafe, having a self-defense product at your disposal can end up coming in handy if you ever find yourself in unexpected danger.

Buying Mace pepper spray and keeping it close at hand doesn’t necessarily mean that you will ever use it on anyone. In fact, the vast majority of people who purchase pepper spray don’t ever use it at all. Having it available to you is simply planning ahead, and will allow you to regain a certain sense of safety and control if you are ever in a situation that you think might be dangerous.

Many husbands purchase Mace pepper spray key chains and other related products for their wives, but it’s important that anyone who is given this kind of spray learns how to properly and safely use it. Far too many people simply buy Mace, put it in their purses or glove boxes, and never think about actually aiming and spraying it.

Make sure to remove your Mace spray from the packaging after you get it, read the instructions thoroughly, and test-fire the device. It’s usually possible to buy an inert training insert so that you can test the device without spraying the actual chemicals in the air. After you’ve gotten a feel for how the device operates, how far it sprays and in which direction, you’ll be more likely to use it correctly when the time comes.

As with any self-defense item, simply carrying Mace pepper spray won’t keep crime away from you. The most important part of protecting yourself from assault is avoiding situations and locations where you might be in danger, and ensuring that your home and other possessions are secure against crime.

Five Bad Habits That Harm Neighborhood Home Security

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Security

Everybody has something they do as a neighbor that probably other people around the neighborhood could do without. Whether it be something annoying or something truly dangerous, both can turn out to be bad for not only your home security, but that of everyone who lives nearby. To avoid such situations, try avoiding these top five ‘bad for home security’ habits.

5. Cranking up the volume. When the music in your house is so loud you can’t hear what’s happening outside, it means you also won’t hear someone breaking into either your house or your neighbor’s. Deafening, literally, one of your 5 senses leads to an opportunity for an intruder, who will likely choose an empty looking house next to the one where all the noise is coming from. Don’t make a dangerous situation for someone else, and keep the volume where you can still hear danger approaching.

4. Partying. While everyone likes a good party and a neighbor that likes to pull the plug or call the cops can be a real drag, the truth is that parties at home bring around lots of strangers that might be a danger not only to your personal items but the immediate neighborhood. Someone who often goes out to party is more likely to come home at odd hours and be forgetful about properly locking up for the evening. Such a pattern also leaves wide windows of opportunity open for intruders.

3. Barking dogs. Although not truly a habit, barking dogs that never cease can be a great cover sound for the barking guard dog in your house. In a neighborhood where dogs are constantly barking, the sound of one that might signal a break in or intrusion is drowned out and may even be entirely ignored, even by the owners. Find a way to work with, train, or simply spend more time with your dog if it is noisy, or politely ask or seek assistance in your area if neighbors are the issue.

2. A messy lawn. In some communities, cleaning up the lawn is more important than others as far as appearances go, however, it is also a great home security system and device to keep the lawn clear of clutter. Often times lawn and garden tools can be very helpful in orchestrating an impromptu break in. A mess in the lawn also says a lot about who lives in a house, and will give clues as to what goodies might be inside.

1. Minding their own business. Although some neighbors might not believe it, a lot of neighbors can mind their own business too much! Sometimes a suspicious noise can turn out to be more, especially when it comes to a home intrusion. It has been said that a burglar can make a loud noise when breaking into a home, as long as it only happens once. When a person hears such a strange sound, there is a tendency to stop and listen for it to happen again. When the sound does not happen again, the person generally ignores it. If you are the neighbor try to follow up on the suspicious occurrence, and hope that someday your neighbors return the favor too!

Home Safety – 5 Easy Steps to Safeguard Your New House

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Security

If you’ve purchased a new home and just settled in, you’re probably concerned about burglars or intruders and want to protect your house. If this is the case, you’ll need to pay attention to fortifying your home security. Consider implementing these five easy steps:

1) Remove and Change All Exterior Locks-Since you’re not aware who may have possession of keys to your home, it’s important to change every outside lock. The previous seller may have passed keys around to the neighbors or a problem roommate in the past. After moving in, the first thing you should do is schedule a locksmith to work on changing the locks or if you’re handy, you can try fixing it yourself by purchasing locks at the nearby hardware store.

2) Change The Security Code On Your Alarm System-If your home is lucky enough to have a built in alarm system, make time to reestablish a new password code. Pick a password code simple for you to remember and only divulge it with people you trust and only when absolutely necessary. Hide the owner’s instruction manual in a safe place just in case you need to troubleshoot future problems or need further operation instructions. If your home wasn’t equipped with one, you may consider getting some estimates and installing one, especially since it’s cheap to rent one.

3) Check All Sprinkler Systems And Smoke Detectors-While most home inspection reports may seem thorough, sometimes an inspector may skip over checking an item. Even though your home inspection report may indicate they’re installed according to local building code, make sure you take the time to test each one and be sure they’re functioning per manufacturer specifications. Change all battery operated alarms with a brand new set of long life batteries. To give your family the most protection, install detectors in every bedroom or hallway that leads to a bedroom. If you live in a large condo complex or hi rise building, take the time to study the emergency escape routes and how the sprinkler system works.

It’s also prudent to install a carbon monoxide alarm on each floor of your house, or close to where you sleep. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a clear odorless gas that is toxic to humans and pets. The primary causes of inadvertent CO poisoning is due to malfunctioning heaters, fireplace flues, and oil heaters.

4) Coordinate An Emergency Escape Route-When an emergency happens, it’s easy to become confused and forget your way out. It’s best to periodically practice emergency evacuation and train everyone in your household to recognize where the exits and entrances are located. If you reside in a house with two levels, make sure everyone knows the fastest and safest way to escape.

5) Childproof Your Home-If you have little kids, you’ve probably already experienced childproofing your home. All households contain hazardous chemicals so it’s important for you to store all toxic chemicals such as cleaners and solvents where children can’t reach them and put safety locks on all cabinets doors. Important emergency telephone numbers like your cellular telephone, police station, fire department, and physicians should be posted on your refrigerator or memo board.

How Can a Woman Feel Safe Living Alone in an Apartment?

Published by N.Y. Remodeler under Security

I’ve never liked living in an apartment. Too many people around me, I have to be too quiet, I can’t have a big dog. In fact some apartments won’t allow any dogs. But that makes sense. When you live on the second or third floor it isn’t always easy to let your dog out to do his business in the middle of the night.

But without a dog you don’t have that sense of protection, that sense of being safe in your apartment that even a small dog can offer.

Of course some people love apartments. No lawn to mow, a smaller area to keep clean and you are surrounded by other people. I’ve lived in a couple of apartments. I had a cat. He wasn’t much use as a protector.

So, how can a single woman feel safe in an apartment? Crimes still happen in apartments. Being surrounded by people who live in the units around you isn’t enough to keep you safe. In fact, you have no idea what kind of people are living around you when you move in. It would be easy for someone in another unit near you to keep an eye on your comings and goings. That may not always be a good thing depending on the type of person it is who is watching you.

So, what will it take for a single woman to feel safe living in an apartment? Well, there are actually several things you can do to protect yourself when living alone. You can obtain a glass breakage alarm, which will sound off if anyone tries to open a window or even a door in the middle of the night, caused by the vibration.

Another tool is a magnetic door alarm which has 2 pieces, one that bolts to the window or door frame and the other that attaches to the window or door. Anyone opening the window or door will set off the alarm.

How about a mini alert alarm? It is a battery operated motion detector that you can set up at night to protect an area inside your apartment. If anyone passes through that area, the alarm will sound.

Another great device to help you feel safe in your apartment is a door stop alarm, which you can place under your door at night. If anyone tries to open the door, it will set off the alarm. This is also a great item to have if you share an apartment with someone you aren’t especially trusting of, and you want to be sure they don’t come into your bedroom while you are asleep.

Then of course there is pepper spray, one of the best protectors for women. Carry it with you, have it close at hand in your apartment, and have one on the visor of your car. Quick to access, quick to use, quickly bring an assailant to his knees.

Every woman should have these tools – if not all of them, at least one. And yet how many do? They aren’t readily available in most towns but they can be found abundantly on the internet. Single women should not have to live in fear just because they want to live alone.

Do some research and find the best tool or tools for you to feel safe in your apartment. Don’t take the risk of not being prepared. Attacks happen quickly, home intrusions happen daily, and one personal invasion of your home or yourself is enough to scar you for life, emotionally as well as physically. Don’t procrastinate. Be safe.
