How to Clean Those Dirty Window Blinds

Published by under Windows

Let’s face it, cleaning window blinds is not much fun, but it’s a job that must be done. So get out the old gloves, and let’s get to work.

Whether your blinds are made of wood, aluminum, vinyl, or fabric, if you clean your blinds on a regular basis, your task will be much easier.

To get started, move any nearby furniture away from the area you’re going to attack first. If you’re planning to use any kind of liquid spray or soapy water, place a thick layer of newspaper or old towels on the floor underneath the window to protect your carpet or flooring. Otherwise, you’ll have another job to do once your blinds are clean.

Here are six (6) tips to make the job easier.

Tip #1: Use the soft brush vacuum cleaner attachment, a lightweight duster or any anti-dust spray and a soft cloth.

Tip #2: Always be sure to clean in the direction your blinds are constructed; clean your vertical blinds vertically and your horizontal blinds horizontally.

Tip #3: Regardless of the method you choose, clean gently to avoid bending or denting your blinds.

Tip #4: Clean blinds in both open and closed positions to ensure the entire slats are thoroughly cleaned.

Tip #5: A great tip is to put a pair of old gloves or socks on your hands and rub them along the blinds to remove the dust.

Tip #6: Another idea is to use a small paintbrush to dust off the slats.

If your blinds have been neglected for a while, you will probably find more than a light film of dust, you may find a thicker layer of dirt. This requires a little more effort to get your blinds really clean. Several methods will do the job; you can try whatever seems best for your particular situation.

Vinyl or Aluminum Blinds

  • Use a damp sponge, cloth, or paper towel along with an all-purpose cleaning product or soapy water.
  • For blinds that require heavy cleaning, it may be necessary to remove the blinds from the window and clean them outside with a water hose.
  • Another method is to line your bathtub with old towels to avoid scratching the surface of the tub, run enough warm water to cover the blinds, add liquid soap, and place the blinds in the open position in the warm soapy water to soak for about thirty minutes. Wipe away the dirt and dry gently; then hang them back up to dry completely.
  • Fabric Blinds

  • Light vacuuming
  • Gently clean with a damp sponge and warm water
  • Wood Blinds

  • Light vacuuming
  • Use an all-purpose wood cleaner and soft cloth
  • Using the old cotton gloves or socks along with your wood cleaner is a great method for wood blinds
  • Do not clean wood blinds with water; this may cause your blinds to warp
  • Regular cleaning will make cleaning your blinds much easier. When you vacuum your floors, take the time to vacuum your blinds as well (at least once a month). This is particularly important for fabric blinds; if dirt is allowed to build up on your fabric blinds, permanent spotting may occur and there isn’t a good method for rectifying this problem.

One last tip: once you’ve cleaned your blinds well, try going over the slats with a sheet of fabric softener to help keep dust from building up so quickly!

    Good Solution- Bamboo Rollup Blinds

    Published by under Windows

Intense sunlight and environmental conditions can damage the outdoor furniture, carpets and rugs. Rather than moving all of them inside in extreme sunlight and then again outside to enjoy the weather bamboo rollup blinds can save the trouble and prevent the damage too. Along with this it adds to the aesthetic look of the area with almost negligible economic cost. The roll up blinds serves good for privacy purpose too even at places like beaches, picnic spots, swimming pools and changing rooms.

    Reliability and Beauty:

The bamboo rollup blinds are reliable in almost all the weather conditions ranging form mild to intense sunlight and from dry to wet weather. They provide protection and privacy at the same time in a pleasingly aesthetical way in all weathers but for their own safety are recommended to be rolled up in rain other wise the bamboo material may get damaged. They can be colored as well as painted with some scenery, picture to further beautify it.

    Outdoor privacy:

Another point that adds to its reliability is that they are easily mobile since they can be rolled up thus taking less space and placed along with your luggage in a van or car. Hence they serve as a good privacy item when going to a beach, picnic point’s etc. they can be hanged on a campsite walls. In other words one can feel free from prying eyes even in the public places.

    Bamboo rollup blinds installation:

Bamboo rollup blinds installation is quite easy and quick depending on its width. As for example for a six foot bamboo blind you need three points to hang it. One in the middle and one at each end, each point is inserted with a screw hook with a distance of 6-12 inches between the points. Now the bamboo can be hanged on to them preferably in the rolled up position initially.

Roll up blind’s other available widths and lengths in the market ranges from 2-10 feet and 4-8 feet respectively. The bamboo rollup blind’s lengths and widths can be adjusted according to customer’s preferences. Thus, allowing the customer other variations of width and lengths.

    Cleaning of bamboo rollup blinds:

Like installation, its cleaning is also very simple and easy and doesn’t require any new item for it thus saving cost as well, the garden hose will do. Let it be squirted well by the garden hose to remove all the dust and dirt and roll it up once it dries up. Never roll up when wet because this will rot the bamboo, reason why many people prefer to keep the bamboo rollup in storage on the rainy seasons.

If the user no longer needs the bamboo rollup blinds for hanging such as if he wants to bring some changes to the sitting area still the bamboo rollup blinds doesn’t gets obsolete, they can be used in place of mats and rugs at picnic spots.

    Art Glass For Your Home

Tiffany Art GlassHave you perused the terms commonly used for art glass? Most people find them numerous and perplexing, so much so that I threw in a ringer right in the title. For starters, mica isn’t glass at all, as most of us learned in elementary science class. Rather it’s a mineral that flakes nicely into translucent sheets. Thus it is an ideal material for lamp shades, as demonstrated in the famous “coolie” shades made by Dirk van Erp.

Although you can’t go wrong using the term “art glass” to refer to most kinds of decorative glass in period lighting, windows, doors, or hand-blown vases, there are terms that are much more accurate and specific. The first thing to discern is the distinction between stained and leaded glass. The stained glass used in European cathedral windows of centuries past is actually colored glass that’s been painted with vitreous oxides and fired, either with or without the application of silver nitrate. This stain glass is considered to be leaded. Individual pieces of the composition or mosaic were held in place with lead cames, which you can recognize as the dark matter holding together the bits of light-filled glass.

Fortunately, nowadays things are much simpler. Today, the term “stained glass” is considered to be any window with colored glass. Any clear glass windows that are leaded are simply just called “leaded.”

Colored glass gains its tint from minerals. But not all stained glass is transparent. The term “opalescent” is used for translucent stained glasses. But opalescent glass is not transparent—it’s milky. Also, this type of glass can have more than one color in a sheet. Tiffany windows are a great example of opalescent glass.

Another notable example of this is the windows by Greene & Greene, who layered their glass the same way as Tiffany, but they used copper foil and lead overlay to enhance the dimensional quality of their compositions. Like their wood furniture and wood dining chairs Greene & Greene’s glass is actually very common. Iridized on one surface so it has the appearance of a rainbow, it’s been used by Frank Lloyd Wright and Tiffany.

Favrile became the brand-name of Tiffany’s version of this shimmering opalescent glass, a term that was trademarked in 1894. What makes this iridescent glass so special is that it appears to change colors when it’s seen from different angles. Although many other companies made their own versions of this iridized glass, no one else used the term Favrile.

Now that we’ve clarified mica, stained glass, leaded glass, opalescent, iridescent, and Favrile, what exactly are slag and slumped? Slag glass refers to the sheets of opalescent glass used in Arts and Crafts light fixtures. (The word “slag” actually comes from the undocumented belief that the glass got its color from slag from iron smelting works.) As for slumped glass, that’s glass that’s fired in the kiln so it will curve. Some glass artisans will actually climb into the kiln to manipulate the hot glass to their liking. To create glass shades, the hot glass is actually “slumped” over a bowl. With this technique, artisans can achieve effects ranging from delicately folded glass in tulip-like shades to futuristic wild shapes.

    Windows and Screens

    Published by under Windows

At the height of summer, the only way to enjoy the evening breeze is to be seated behind window screens; otherwise mosquitoes and gnats will ruin your evening. Screens, especially on doors, are easy to rip, so it’s a good idea to know how to simply repair your screens so you can continue to enjoy summer breezes.

This is an easy task, and even the “unhandiest” can manage it. With a few simple materials, you can keep your screens repaired, no matter how many times kids or dogs go crashing through them. Most of these materials are probably already laying around the house: wood putty, brad nails, household cement and screening material and a few tools such as scissors, a screen rolling tool, a razor knife, a square, a stapler, a needles pliers, and 1X2 stock to stretch the screening and 1X4 stock for wedges.

A small hole in a screen is the easiest to repair with a patch. This will work with metal and fiberglass screens, whereas plastic screens will have to be replaced. Simply measure the hole and buy a screen patch or cut a patch from a roll of screening. For a small hole, you will need a patch a half inch larger than the hole, for a large whole, make the patch an inch larger. Unravel a few strands of screening around edge of the patch and interweave them with the screening by bending either by hand or with a needle nosed screwdriver.

Replacing the entire screen is also simple, but is done differently with a metal frame than with a wooden frame.

For a metal frame, place the entire screen on a surface large enough to support it. Remove the rubber edging and set aside and remove the old screening. You can save the screening for future use as patches. Measure the required amount of screening and cut a piece from the screening roll that is a little bit larger than the opening. Using the screen rolling tools, tighten the screening into groove and replace the rubber edging, working your way slowly around the window or door. After the screening is fitted in, cut off any excess Wit the razor knife and your screen window or door is ready to be installed.

For a wooden frame, you will need to use the 1X2 stocks that is slightly wider than the frame. Cut the new screening from the replacement roll, Wit sufficient excess. Staple the screening across the top edge of the window or door, and nail the bottom cleat to a bench and install the cleats. Roll the screening over the cleats and nail in place. Insert the wedges between the cleats and the screen frame and tap them until the screening is taut. Staple the screening in place every few inches. Trim excess and countersink the brads to the screen molding and fill the holes with wood putty. then staple the whole screen into place by working from the center brace out. When you remove the wedges, the screen should remain taut. Use the screen rolling tools to replace the screen moldings and then just sit back and admire your work!

    Choices in Window Hardware

    Published by under Windows

There are many materials available for window hardware. Hardware can serve two important purposes: energy efficiency and interior design. In terms of design, you will be guided by your personal taste. The climate of your area may determine what kind of energy efficiency you will need to be concerned with. Wood is the most common type of window hardware and is has been in use for many years. It is easy to work with, both for professionals and amateurs. It is the material of choice if a project involves any kind of intricate carving or detail. It is almost always used in custom designed windows. You can paint or stain window hardware to almost any finish you want that will complement your home décor. Wood is also an excellent material for energy efficiency. However, wood does require maintenance over time. If you do not re-stain or re-paint your wood finishes periodically, the finish will start to peel. This not only looks awful, but the exposed wood will start to rot. However, if you keep up the maintenance by painting or staining regularly, wood lasts a very long time.

Steel window hardware is used on windows, but most often for basement windows. Sometimes you may find it in older homes; newer homes, with their energy efficiency requirements would not do well with steel. Both heat and cold can leak through steel window frames. It is a very strong material and so it is usually the choice for hurricane shutters. Steel also needs the regular maintenance of painting, or it will rust and eventually corrode. Aluminum window frames have the strength and durability of steel, but they do not have the maintenance requirements of steel window frames. The colors of aluminim frames are baked on, and so do not have to be repainted constantly. But it is an energy “leaker” just like steel is and will allow the heat from a home to escape. Vinyl has become the window hardware of choice lately. Vinyl is energy efficient and Vinyl window frames are just about maintenance free; they don’t need to be painted and a quick swipe with cleanser on a cloth will keep them looking like new. The color is put in the manufacturing process, so it will never peel or scratch and there is a wide variety of colors it is available in. Fiberglass is a material that is just recently being used as window frame material.

It has the properties of durability and energy efficiency since there is little to no heat loss if it is insulated properly. However, this perfect combination of factors does not come without a price: fiberglass is the most expensive material for window frames. If you are in a climate where it is extremely hot, you will want to choose a window frame material with a low “U” factor. This will keep the cool air in and the hot air out.

In a cold climate, you want to keep the heat in and cold out and you should choose a window frame that will do this. If you use energy efficient material and a lot of insulation, you should be able to do this. Insulated glass will add to the energy efficiency. They have two layers of glass with a gas between the layers that acts as an insulator. If you have to replace windows in a cold climate, you should think about this.

Another thing to consider when replacing windows is the architectural design of the house. Old fashioned wood windows would not completely modern contemporary designed home.

Being particularly interested in home security and locks, Jerry Blackburn has been publishing various summaries in the area. Writing for publications on locks and window hardware the columnist improved his depth of understanding in the field.

    Window Treatment Basics

    Published by under Windows

With so many different window treatment options available, it’s easy to become confused. But different treatments excel at different aspects of functionality. Knowing which window treatment is right for your needs can save time, money and frustration.

There are three major functions that window treatments can perform. They are privacy, light control, and decor. Very few will perform well in all three areas, so it’s important to priorities which functions are most important to you.

    Privacy protection

Privacy is obviously important, especially for windows in the front of your home that probably face a street or other public throughway’s. Windows facing more private areas of a fenced yard, on the other hand might not need to provide much in the way of privacy.

Several window treatment designs can provide privacy. Blinds or thick curtains most notably, but privacy can also be attained with use of window frostings or diffusers. These will however obstruct your view of the great outdoors.

    Light control

Sunlight and glare needs to be controlled in the bedroom if sleeping comfort is interrupted by light entering through the windows. In a room where sunlight will interfere with TV watching or computer use needs window treatments that are effective in light control too.

Any room with items that can be damaged by the suns UV rays need window treatments that are good at controlling light. Any kind of artwork, antiques, or photographs can benefit from this protection. Even carpeting and hardwood flooring can be damaged by the suns UV rays. Consider this when deciding on a window treatment type for any particular window.

Window tinting can be very effective at blocking UV rays. Other than that, window treatments that open and close easily are preferred – blinds, curtains etc. excel here.

    Complementing the rooms decor

The decor of window treatments in any given room is more important to some of us than to others. If decor is not an issue for you, then some simple window blinds are inexpensive and effective at the other two criteria.

If decor is more important to you, then you can have your work cut out for you depending on taste. Curtains are available in almost any pattern and color of material. A little sewing experience can make a DIY curtain project a breeze, or perhaps you know someone who is willing to sew curtains to your specifications, using our preferred material.

Window treatments aren’t just for decoration, light control, or privacy, but some level of all three. Depending on what is important to you for any given window in a room, you can now easily decide which type is best for you.
