Kitchen cabinets are one of those things that can be expensive to replace, or sometimes you simply want to hang on to them. If you have older kitchen cabinets that you want to look a whole lot nicer, there are several ways to update them to fit the style of your kitchen décor. Here are some great decorating options with which to update your kitchen cabinets that don’t cost a lot in terms of time or money.

Add New Hardware to the Kitchen Cabinets
Installing new hardware to your kitchen cabinets is a very simple and inexpensive way to update your décor. You can really change the look of a cabinet with new pulls or handles. The best part is, cabinet hardware doesn’t cost much and may only take an hour or so to install. To really spruce up your cabinets and add a creative touch, see if you can find some unique handmade or hand-painted cabinet pulls.

Paint the Kitchen Cabinets
Painting your kitchen cabinets is usually easier than you think it’s going to be. Depending on the style and color of your old cabinets, it may not even be necessary to sand them before painting. The easiest way to paint cabinets is to remove the doors and paint them on a flat surface. This way you’ll get the best possible coverage.

If you’re looking to completely change the look of the room, go with an entirely new color. For instance, if you have a country kitchen that you want to turn modern, painting the cabinets will help you accomplish this. This type of painting project usually takes a weekend, leaving you with a kitchen that looks brand-new come Monday morning.

Take the Doors Off the Cabinets
Taking the doors off some of your cabinets is another quick way to update your kitchen. You can use this space to show off what’s inside those cabinets or showcase a collection that enhances your kitchen’s theme or style. You don’t have to take off every cabinet door; even just two open cabinets can change the entire look of the kitchen. Before you remove the doors, however, be sure that you are committed to keeping the inside of those cabinets clean and organized, and are comfortable displaying the items inside. You can create a wonderful display with antique china, for instance, whereas a collection of plastic cups might not be so attractive.

Replace the Cabinet Doors
A great way to update your kitchen and have cabinets that fit with the style you’re going for is to replace your kitchen cabinet doors. When it comes to kitchen cabinet doors, you have plenty of different options. There are cabinet doors with ready-made designs already built into them as well as ones with windows. If you’re going to replace your cabinet doors, you want a cabinet door that matches the theme and style of your kitchen. This will make the cabinets cohesive with the rest of the room. Be sure to measure your cabinets properly before selecting your doors, as this will ensure that they will fit.

If you’re looking to take your kitchen from old to stylish and new, try one or more of these ideas for updating your kitchen cabinets. While none of these renovations will cost you thousands of dollars, they can all drastically change the look of the room. Once you decide which option will work best for your cabinets and your kitchen, you can start updating your look.

Cabinets are important in a room’s layout. Their primary purpose is to store things. Knowing how to construct cabinets imparts an appreciation of a very basic need that one sometimes takes for granted.

Cabinets store things. In the bedroom, they are used to store clothes, shoes, bags, and toiletries. Cabinets also store linens, towels, curtains, among other items. The bathroom has the medicine cabinet and a cabinet that contains toiletries like soap, fragrances, and shampoos.

The kitchen cabinets contain pots, pans, dishes, utensils, and cleaning agents. Secondary storage areas, but nevertheless still important, are cabinets that hold files. Other cabinets store equipment and accessories like CDs, DVDs, books, magazines, tapes, and other things. Cabinets are also used to house audio-visual equipment like television, stereo sets, and computer sets.

A cabinet’s construction is constant for the different cabinet designs. A cabinet is a three-dimensional piece that has a framework, which is covered by materials like solid wood, plywood, particle board, laminated wood, glass, stone, metal, among other materials. Integrated within the cabinets are drawers and shelves. A cabinet’s front is composed mainly of the openings, which are supported by the hinges. To top off the look, one has a choice of adding cabinet door knobs to complete the design.

Let’s start with the design. After that, estimates are produced so that one has an idea of the materials to secure. Then it is time to build the framework, which is comprised of lumber or metal. If the framework is metal, then welding is used in the joinery. If wooden framework is used, the wood may joined through the use of rabbets, glue, screws, or nails.

The cabinet facing comes after the framework is done. Various materials are available, in which the most common ones are plywood, wood, medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and particle board. Plywood and wood facings are glued or nailed to the framework. When using MDF or particle board, it is difficult to use nails and glue for adherence. The boards are pre-bored by the manufacturer so that it is easier to screw the materials together.

Now that the cabinet is almost complete, it is time to use hardware like hinges, cabinet door knobs, hanger rods, drawer slides, dish racks, and the like. If the cabinet is laminated, there is no need to paint. If the cabinet is wood, painting is necessary. Pre-finishing techniques include adding putty to joined surfaces and sanding them in preparation for the final coat. Once the cabinet is painted over, let it dry for a time before using.

One now understands how cabinets are made. It is time to enjoy the fruits of one’s construction labor. Store away!

Bathroom cabinets were used to be a simple box, mounted on the wall in earlier days. Now they are considered as the important styling component in our bathroom. Bathroom sinks are another vanity which adds style to your bathrooms. Bathroom sinks has come along way from the ordinary hollowed out stone, used in earlier days. Now bathroom sinks are available in different styles, shape and colour. The material used for making sinks is of wide variety now. Stone sinks, stainless steel sinks, porcelain, and fiberglass are some of them. Before buying the sink, one has to consider about the position and the usage of the sinks. Depending upon what the sink will have to endure and whether it will come in regular contact with water, the choice of the material can be decided.

Stone sinks and stainless steel can with stand any condition. But porcelain is highly susceptible to damage; it gets scratched or chipped very easily. But the advantage of porcelain is that they can be repaired and cleaned without much problem. Porcelain sinks are available in wide range of colours, to match with the cabinets and other décor of the bathroom. Stone bathroom sinks also come in different colours but they get stained easily, as the stones are highly porous. The cheaper type of bathroom sinks are the fiber glass sinks. They are less feasible, as they turn dull due to regular contact with water. It is better to select bathroom sinks, which include faucets and drain assembly which makes the installation more easy and perfect.

Bathroom cabinets are an essential component of any bathroom. Now a day stylish and most elegant looking cabinets are available. There are sleek varieties to save space, antique –look cabinets which provide traditional look to your bathrooms, or custom made types to suite any of your specific needs. Bathroom cabinets are available in the traditional American style with frames attached to it, to cover the row edges of the cabinet. The frame less or the European style bathroom cabinets have their row edges covered by simple trim strips. The bathroom cabinets can be tall and large and provides storage area to tuck away things, so the bathroom remains clutter free.

The least expensive type of bathroom cabinets are the stock type, they are mass produced and hence cheaper than other types. But they are available in only a few ranges of size and style. Modular bathroom cabinets are the comparatively new type of bathroom cabinets. They are also mass – produced. Modular bathroom cabinets are more popular as they provide flexibility in the design. The most expensive of all types are the custom made bathroom cabinets. They are not mass-produced, and they are usually built by the cabinet shops according to the need of the customer. Bathroom cabinet made of different wood is also available. You can have cabinets made of walnut, cherry, oak or maple, finished with high –gloss lacquer to give the natural wood finish.

Bathroom storage cabinets may be of wall cabinets or medicine cabinets. Corner shelves in the bathroom also provide storage area. The space above the toilet area can be used for storage, if cabinets are fixed there. Modern day bathrooms have separate shower and toilet area, so fitting the cabinets away from the shower area increases the life of the cabinets. Wall mounted sinks and cabinet takes up less space, as they do not have contact with the floor you can utilize that space for putting other objects like a small table or chair or the much needed trashcan. Sinks which are mounted on top of counters or cabinets are more stable and sturdy than the wall mounted or the free standing one.

Cabinet door hinges are one of the biggest afterthoughts in home design but they often get the biggest workout in the home. Nary an hour goes by that someone isn’t opening a cabinet somewhere in the home, whether it’s in the kitchen, pantry, bathroom or hallway.

Most simply make do with the hinges that came with the cabinet. Only when they begin to squeak and sway in complaint about their endless exercise do we give thought to changing them. And only then do we only change the offending hinge that has failed to do its duty tightly and quietly.
But changing out hinges can yield some exciting results in the home, particularly when they are visible hinges.

Because visible cabinet door hinges are, well, always visible, they become expected and common place over time. Eventually, you don’t even notice them anymore. At least until they become unhinged as noted above.

With just a few twists of a screw, you can replace all your visible hinges with new ones that can breathe fresh life into your once boring cabinet doors. For example, many hinges come in silver or brass. Why not change it up with deep black, hammered copper or cast wax molded versions of antique hinges. If you have a rustic feel in your kitchen, you can decorate H or HL hinges that make your cooking space look like a turn of the century country kitchen.

For something a little more European, consider adding Antique English Hinges. These H shaped steel cabinet door hinges have a very ornate finish to them that will add old world charm to your kitchen, bathroom or pantry area.

Ornamental hinges are another good choice for visible, or surface mounted cabinet door hinges. These come in a wide range of styles, including butterfly and Art Deco.

When selecting new hinges, you want to keep a few things in mind. First, what’s the style of your kitchen? Is it modern, traditional, country or retro? What kind do you have now and what hinges would not only look good, but also properly support the door so it doesn’t sag or even fail over the time. Too weak of hinges and you’ll always be straightening the door. This can become maddening very quickly.

If you have concealed hinges and want to move to surface mounted cabinet hinges, chances are good that you’ll want to go with either semi-concealed hinges where only the frame wing is visible (the door part goes on the back side of the cabinet door), overlay hinges, or inset hinges. It just depends on the type cabinet doors you have.

One good hint: Before you redo all your hinges buy several different styles and finishes and put them on them in various parts of the kitchen. You can then get a sense of which works best for you from the standpoint of design and décor before going through the effort of replacing all the cabinet door hinges in the home.

Jennifer Akre, owner of numerous online specialty shops, shares her insight on how to create a more beautiful home by using decorative cabinet hinges, stylish door hinges and sleek hinges.

Paper Clutter Is the Worst!
Paper can easily get the best of you and your space. The most important thing is to establish an easy-to-maintain system to manage the paper in your office.

Do you have a spot for those incoming bills? Do you have a place to put the newspapers that you don’t have time to read right away? How many magazine subscriptions do you have? Do you actually read those magazines? It will help tremendously if you designate a specific bin, box or basket for your mail, newspapers and magazines. Just as you have a home that you return to at the end of your day, create a home for your paper.

Don’t pick a box or basket that’s too large. Then you’ll be tempted to save several weeks’ worth of newspaper instead of just a few. Remember, there’s no new news in a week-old newspaper.

Watch Out for Large Furniture
Large bulky furniture really clutters up a room, making it harder to feel organized. That huge desk might seem like a good idea, but consider if you’re getting good use out of it, or if it’s become one more place for you to dump stuff at the end of a workday. Select mission office furniture that fits the size of your room. Make sure the size of your furniture meets the size of the room.

Try to follow the “less is more” theory here. Having less furniture is an easy way to create more space and less clutter. For example, to reduce your paper clutter trying get a mission file cabinet to organize your bills and archive your important papers.

Combat Closet Clutter
Like many, do you have no space in your closet? I hear this complaint all the time, but remember that it’s not the closet’s fault. Get your closet in order by following these simple tips.

Has it been a long time since you sorted through your things in your closet? Do this before you do anything else. You’ll be shocked at what you have. The key to a successful clear-out is, if it doesn’t fit or you don’t wear it, then get rid of it.

When you go to put away what’s left, group like items together. It’s nice if you use the same kind of hangers. A great place for additional storage is the inside of the closet door. It’s best to store your frequently used items at eye level or below. Save the higher places for long-term storage items. This is called storing smart, and it will help keep your closet super organized.

To keep your closet tidy, before you purchase that new pair of shoes, consider whether you have room for them. A good rule to follow is the “one in, one out” rule: If something new goes into your closet, then make sure something comes out.

Being a Custom Cabinetmaker and Finish Carpenter I’m frequently asked what I think about refacing cabinetry as opposed to demolishing the old cabinets and starting from scratch.

I generally pride myself as someone who has an open mind. While I have strong opinions on a variety of topics… I like to offer options to people rather than to come off as someone who knows it all. Besides, I don’t “know it all.”

That being said, to say I’m not a fan of refacing cabinetry would be an understatement! I’ll give you the Pro’s and Con’s and let you be the judge.

If you have a refacing specialist in your home you are likely to hear something like…

Refacing cabinetry is an inexpensive way to update your kitchen’s look with a minimum of inconvenience and without all the dirt, debris and noise associated
with demolishing your kitchen and starting over.

Now, to be fair, there is some truth in the statement above. Refacing does typically cost less than having a custom cabinetmaker, like myself,
completely redo your cabinetry. (Though it’s not inexpensive!!!) The project will also be completed in less time than a custom cabinet job.

The problem is, they make no mention of quality or durability or improved functionality and forget getting a decent warranty!

In order to understand the problems with refacing cabinetry you need to know a little about the process. They typically remove and throw away the: doors, drawer fronts, door hinges, drawer slides and cabinet door knobs (if any).

Then, the cabinets are “roughed-up” by sanding and sometimes a chemical stripper is used as well. The refacing installer then adheres a wood veneer to the exposed surfaces. Typically, the veneer has a PSA backing (Pressure Sensitive Adhesive) and it is firmly pressed to the old wood surface to make it’s bond.

The veneer is trimmed and detailed. A new wood stain and protective finish is applied. The final touches include installing the new doors, drawer fronts,
miscellaneous hardware and possibly the attached moldings.

The Con’s come down to Quality and Freedom! The PSA wood veneer is very thin and very frequently starts to bubble or lift off the old wood surface within a year to 18 months.

If you happen to catch something on an edge of the veneer you may very well peel it back or tear it altogether. If someone, say a child, happens to scratch
the veneer surface it will most likely expose the old wood surface as the veneer is very thin.

As far as freedom goes, you didn’t get to change the cabinet’s interior. If you had fixed shelves before, you probably didn’t get to upgrade to adjustable
shelves as this is too much work in retrofitting.

If the old kitchen layout wasn’t to your liking, your newly “updated” kitchen isn’t going to work any different.

The list goes on and on…

By the way, if you’re still not convinced, ask around and find someone who refaced their kitchen two years ago or more and find out if they’d do it again. Just make sure they don’t work for the refacing company!
