Transforming You Small Kitchen

Published by under Kitchen Remodeling

You might know what kind of worry a kitchen can be if yours is small. Lots of families spend a good amount of time in the kitchen enjoying meals, and company usually sits at the kitchen table during a visit. You can make your kitchen appear larger with a few easy tips if it feels so tiny that you can’t move. With the tips and ideas in this article you will make an enjoyable kitchen from one that feels constricting.

Before starting up, clear out anything that isn’t a complete necessity from your cabinets and cupboards. You may be think that this won’t help make the kitchen seem larger, and you’re right; clearing them out is more for your peace of mind when you open up your cupboard or cabinet and find that it is organized instead of cluttered.

First of All, Organize

Junked-up and cluttered counter tops can really decrease the space in a kitchen. Small appliances, plants, canisters and other knick-knacks don’t necessarily take up much floor space, but they do diminish the size of the room buy making it look unorganized and cluttered. By clearing your cluttered counter tops you will be on your way to creating an air, open and spacious space in your room.

Walls and Floors

You might already know this, but a room can be visually expanded with light colors. It’s definitely time to update your walls if they are dark or covered in wallpaper. Strip your wall paper, especially if it has small prints, flowers and intricate designs as it will make the room look smaller. Using a light color like butter yellow to paint the room will not only visually open up the room, but it is also visually appealing.

You should also keep your floors light in color. Natural wood or pine stained in a light shade will look really nice in the room if you have wood floors. If you have linoleum or ceramic tiles, make sure to keep them light colored as well; preferably in a cream or sand shade.

Cabinets

Most people don’t have them means for buying new cabinets. Just as your walls and floors are light in color, your cabinets should follow the same rules. If you have dark cabinets, and you want to save yourself some money, you can give them a face lift yourself. You will really transform your kitchen’s look and feel if you update your room’s cabinets. Sand down the cabinet’s finish, apply a couple of coats of a light shade, and some decorative hardware should be added. A coat of polyurethane can be applied to protect the paint and give it a nice sheen.

Allowing natural light to enter by opening up your windows is a great way of making the room look more spacious. Leave your window over the sink open without any curtains or other treatments, if you can. As long as you keep your material sheer and light colored, you can use it to keep the airy appeal if you can’t keep it open.

The floors should be kept clear of any furniture or unnecessary accessories. If there are lots of plants and baskets or anything else taking up room on the floor, move them out. Your kitchen will appear more spacious if you keep the floors, counter tops and kitchen table clean. As soon as you put some of these tips to work for you, your kitchen will look as though it has doubled in size.

Country Atmosphere On Your Apartment

If you’re living in an apartment, chances are that you’re living in the city. If your home is an apartment and you find yourself longing for the warm and cozy atmosphere of a country home, you can certainly have it! You don’t have to give up a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere just because you live in a city, whether big or small. When you walk in the door, you want to feel as though you’ve been transported to the country, where wildflowers are rampant and fresh air flows through every fiber of your being. If you’re currently living in a blank, expressionless apartment, here are some tips on how to turn that space into a real home.

Start with the Furniture

Decorating in country style is going to require a lot of wood. In fact, the more wood you include, the better. Find a sofa, wood dining table, and other large pieces of furniture that are made of knotty pine or other natural looking woods. Find these furnishings doesn’t necessarily have to cost you a fortune, as you can often find used furnishings at flea markets or online.

Another great complement to this look is wood end tables. Lace doilies or checked pattern cloths can then be casually draped over the tables. Then you have a place to display candles in jars scented like cinnamon, vanilla, or apple pie for a country appeal.

Decorate the Walls for Added Interest and Depth

When your walls are bare, they tend to look very stark and blank, lending a cold atmosphere to the room. Rural or black-and-white prints framed in wood are a great way to warm up your walls. Or create a great focal point for the room by hanging a country-style quilt alone on a large wall.

Don’t Forget the Kitchen!

If your apartment kitchen has room for a table, then continue your country theme with a natural or knotty pine one. Top the table off with a checkered or lace cloth for a continuous country feel. Antique-looking bar stools at the counter are another great option if there just any room for a table. You can also enhance the country atmosphere with wildflower arrangements, wooden bowls and spoons, and even some country candles. A wooden spice rack on the countertop or a wicker centerpiece on the table make nice country touches as well.

Add Accessories and Accents You Love

When decorating your apartment in country style, the primary thing you want to remember is to use plenty of natural, exposed, or antique-looking wood and simply patterned cloths for table decoration. When choosing accessories and accents, go with items you truly love, as this will help add a little of your unique personality into the mix. Other items that will add a country flair to your décor include country-style candles, natural flowers, quilts, wicker, and bookcases filled with old or leather-bound books.

Apartments often feel totally uninviting, appearing more or less to be the same. Make your living space your own by warming it up. You will love coming home to a style you adore after a hard day’s work. When it comes to comfort, coziness, and a truly welcoming feeling, country décor is like no other. Create a décor in your apartment that you will love coming home to!

Easy Ways To Decorate Your Child’s Bathroom

Published by under Interior Decorating

It can be easy to get carried away when decorating your childs bathroom. But you do need to be sure that the room is functional as well as fun. It doesnt take a huge remodeling project to create a bathroom thats a perfect fit for a kid. Often, all thats needed in a great decorating plan that makes sense. Here are some great tips for you to keep in mind when you go to decorate a kids bathroom.

Get Your Kid Involved in the Decorating
The more you give your child a say in decorating a room, the more likely it is that he or she will use that room and keep it clean. When it comes to choosing colors and a scheme for the bathroom, consider your childs opinion (if he or she is old enough). See if your child would be interested in helping you paint or making art projects to hang on the walls. They will be much more enthusiastic about the bathroom if they are involved in any aspect of the decorating.

Always Remember Safety First When Decorating
You want to keep your kids safety in mind at all times when decorating the bathroom. After all, its really easy to get caught up in the project, only to later realize that something you did is a safety hazard. This is particularly important for younger kids and toddlers. If there are younger children in the home, remember to add things like a non-slip tub mat and safety latch for the toilet. Its also a good idea to add safety locks to the cabinets to keep medications out of the reach of little hands.

Be Sure to Add Plenty of Storage and Organization Space
Be sure that everything in your childs bathroom has a designated place, especially if you want that room to stay clean. By providing your kids with plenty of storage and organization space, you will make it more likely that theyll clean up than if they dont have a place to put their stuff. Organize the cabinets and drawers with smaller bins and baskets so theres a place to keep small items. When coming up with storage and organizational spaces, remember that they can be decorative as well.

Add Style or a Theme with Small Touches
Kids grow up fast, and thus you might consider decorating the room neutrally, keeping the walls and the flooring plain, and then using smaller dcor items to add a stylish flair. Then these smaller items, such as wallpaper borders and shower curtains, can easily be changed in the future. You might add style with other decor items such as towels, baskets, and artwork.

Get Creative with the Decorating
Remember that this is a kids bathroomnot your dining room or living room. Therefore, you can get creativeeven go a little crazywith the dcor. Dont be afraid to step out of your comfort zone when decorating this room. This is one room that doesnt need to match the style of the rest of the home, especially if only you and your kids are going to go in there.

It can be a lot of fun to decorate a kids bathroom for both parents and their kids. Keep these tips in mind, and you will be well on your way to a great kids bathroom.

Update Your Outdated Look

Published by under Interior Decorating

By any chance, could your home use an update? Perhaps your home is older, or maybe the look is just tired. Nonetheless, it’s possible to make your home look as though it’s been remodeled without spending much money at all. Remember that your home is your castle and you want it to be welcoming, comfortable, and appealing to each and every guest. Here are some super easy tips for giving the interior of your home a much-needed facelift while staying within your budget.

Painting: The Cheapest and Easiest Way to Transform a Room
Although painting isn’t everyone’s favorite chore, you can really create beauty in a room. Paint can liven things up a bit, especially walls that are the average off-white or some other drab color. To really make a statement, paint one or two of the walls a bold or bright color that blends with the overall color scheme. If you have furniture pieces that have seen better days, why not paint them? With a little paint and some stenciling, your old oak coffee tables and end tables will take on an entirely different look.

Take a Good Look at Your Furniture
What state is your furniture in? Perhaps you are tired of things being so congested or just sick of the overall style. Give your room a long, hard look. Could you possibly remove a few pieces that you never use? What this will do is open the room up, giving it a more open and airy feel and appearance.

If it’s not a good time to buy furniture, try using slipcovers instead. These days, you can find a variety of styles that allow you to create entirely new-looking furniture at a much lower cost than buying new. Another option is to repurpose your furniture. Do you have a few of those stray pieces in other rooms that are never used? Why not paint them and reuse them? You might even use them for a place to store games, toys, and other things that often get strewn all over, creating a messy or junky look.

Add Color, and You Add Life
Enough can’t be said about color when it comes to giving the interior of your home new life. Not only does color attract the eye, but it has the ability to create different moods. While bright colors energize, soft colors relax. If you have a monotonous color scheme, consider the addition of exciting color splashes. Throw in some brightly colored and intricately patterned rugs and pillows, and add some attention-grabbing accents to the walls. With splashes of color to break up the boredom, you won’t believe how your room is transformed.

Accessories Make the Difference
As every woman knows, accessories are the “jewelry” of the home. However, it’s important to know how to use them. Too many accessories results in a home that looks cluttered and disorganized. But with too few accessories, you’ll give it a cold, blank, and indifferent tone. Therefore, you need to find a balance.

Large rooms can often use the more personal, intimate look and feel that it gains simply by the addition of more accents. Many accents can be placed together in a grouping on one large wall. If the room is smaller, than just the opposite is true. In this case, use an intricately patterned tapestry or other oversized decoration piece on one wall.

By putting these tips to work, you can totally transform the look of your home. And don’t forget the added bonus that everyone loves—it’s not going to cost you a bundle to create those wonderful spaces!

Update Your Kitchen Cabinets

Published by under Kitchen Remodeling

Kitchen cabinets are one of those things that can be expensive to replace, or sometimes you simply want to hang on to them. If you have older kitchen cabinets that you want to look a whole lot nicer, there are several ways to update them to fit the style of your kitchen décor. Here are some great decorating options with which to update your kitchen cabinets that don’t cost a lot in terms of time or money.

Add New Hardware to the Kitchen Cabinets
Installing new hardware to your kitchen cabinets is a very simple and inexpensive way to update your décor. You can really change the look of a cabinet with new pulls or handles. The best part is, cabinet hardware doesn’t cost much and may only take an hour or so to install. To really spruce up your cabinets and add a creative touch, see if you can find some unique handmade or hand-painted cabinet pulls.

Paint the Kitchen Cabinets
Painting your kitchen cabinets is usually easier than you think it’s going to be. Depending on the style and color of your old cabinets, it may not even be necessary to sand them before painting. The easiest way to paint cabinets is to remove the doors and paint them on a flat surface. This way you’ll get the best possible coverage.

If you’re looking to completely change the look of the room, go with an entirely new color. For instance, if you have a country kitchen that you want to turn modern, painting the cabinets will help you accomplish this. This type of painting project usually takes a weekend, leaving you with a kitchen that looks brand-new come Monday morning.

Take the Doors Off the Cabinets
Taking the doors off some of your cabinets is another quick way to update your kitchen. You can use this space to show off what’s inside those cabinets or showcase a collection that enhances your kitchen’s theme or style. You don’t have to take off every cabinet door; even just two open cabinets can change the entire look of the kitchen. Before you remove the doors, however, be sure that you are committed to keeping the inside of those cabinets clean and organized, and are comfortable displaying the items inside. You can create a wonderful display with antique china, for instance, whereas a collection of plastic cups might not be so attractive.

Replace the Cabinet Doors
A great way to update your kitchen and have cabinets that fit with the style you’re going for is to replace your kitchen cabinet doors. When it comes to kitchen cabinet doors, you have plenty of different options. There are cabinet doors with ready-made designs already built into them as well as ones with windows. If you’re going to replace your cabinet doors, you want a cabinet door that matches the theme and style of your kitchen. This will make the cabinets cohesive with the rest of the room. Be sure to measure your cabinets properly before selecting your doors, as this will ensure that they will fit.

If you’re looking to take your kitchen from old to stylish and new, try one or more of these ideas for updating your kitchen cabinets. While none of these renovations will cost you thousands of dollars, they can all drastically change the look of the room. Once you decide which option will work best for your cabinets and your kitchen, you can start updating your look.

Decorating a Bedroom a Boy Will Love

Once you’ve bought your young son some rugged wood bedroom furniture like a wooden beds or wood night stands then you have to decide on decorating them that will keep them happy and entertained. There are so many great and unique decorating themes for any boy’s room. Be sure when deciding on a theme that it is something that can grow with him for the next several years. The following themes can be adapted to ages ranging from two to ten. Any of these unique decorating ideas will help get you started on creating a fun and engaging decor for any little boy’s room.

The Firehouse Bedroom

If your little boy is enamored with firefighters, then a firehouse theme would be perfect for his room. The walls can be decorated with any number of firefighter wallpaper borders that are available. Or for those who are able to draw or paint, consider creating a firefighter scene or a fire truck on one of the walls. There are a wide variety of accessories you can choose from to increase the fun. Try adding a fireman’s hat, a hose hanging on the wall, a fireman’s pole, and fire truck bedding. If you are feeling particularly brave, you might even give your boy a siren for his room.

The Bedroom from Outer Space

An outer space theme is the perfect choice for any little boy interested in aliens or the night sky. Walls can be decorate using outer-space and star wallpaper borders and even star and planet decals. If you’re able to, you should be able to find spaceship or planet templates that you can trace and paint on the walls.

To really make the room look cool, paint the ceiling black and then use glow-in-the-dark paint to add stars and planets to the ceiling. Toss in a couple of Martian stuffed animals, and your little boy will be happily slumbering deep in outer space.

Pirate Themes for Bedrooms

Depending on the age of your little boy, for a pirate theme you can use movies such as Peter Pan and Pirates of the Caribbean as a reference. You can start by painting the walls blue to represent the ocean. If you’re really ambitious, you might paint a pirate ship on one of the walls or an island, complete with an overflowing treasure chest on the shore. With accessories such as nets, portholes, treasure boxes with booty, and a couple of pirate hats, your boy will be ready to hit the South Seas.

A Favorite Animal Theme

Does your little boy prefer monkeys or lizards? Consider decorating his room with his favorite animals. This is a broad theme that can be customized to fit your little boy’s preferences. For those boys with pets, the theme of the room can be built around that pet, complete with a special place for the pet to live. Remember, though, that if your boy is old enough, to take his interests into consideration and not just choose any animal theme for his room.

Other Decorating Themes

Here are some other unique decorating themes for a little boy’s room:

cowboys

dinosaurs

race cars

military

jungle

sports

construction

licensed characters and cartoons

haunted house

bugs

the wild outdoors

The best way to find the perfect decorating theme for your little boy is to involve him in the process. Allow him to help choose what he wants in the room and help set it up.

Tips For Using Rustic Furniture To Make Your Home Look More Appealing

Published by under Interior Decorating

In the world of interior design, rustic décor is one of the most popular styles. This is a décor style that’s warm and inviting, whether you make your home in a densely populated city or a wooded rural area. Nothing creates that comfortable and welcoming feeling quite like a home decorated in rich, warm shades. Those who just adore natural wood are sure to love this style of decorating.

Colors used in rustic décor include shades of forest green, cream, brown tones, and any other rich colors found in nature. Wood is used in walls, floors, ceiling fans, and furniture. Hardwood floors are always beautiful, but they tend to be exquisite in this style. When thrown at the foot of the bed or in front of the sofa, braided accent rugs contribute to the homey, comfortable look and atmosphere.

For the Walls
These days, some types of paneling are outdates, but the wood panels that are applied horizontally are trendy and create an amazing look. Or if you prefer, paint the walls. Just be sure to stick to rustic colors. By painting only a couple of walls, you can add even more interest to the room. For instance, paint one forest green and other in a contrasting rich tan color. Another great rustic touch is a wall tapestry. Look for rich tapestries with scenes of nature, mountainous terrain, and forest landscapes.

Furnishings for the Rustic Home
If you’re looking for the perfect complement for a rustic décor, you can’t go wrong with leather and solid wooden furniture. Any exposed wood on the sofa, love seat, or recliner should match your coffee and end tables. If you’re going to include furniture with fabric, dark green, rust, and creams go beautifully in a plaid or striped pattern. Just remember that with this type of décor you want to stick to colors and textures that mimic nature.

A perfect rustic look for the kitchen includes a long wooden pine or maple table. All you need to do is add a bowl filled with fruit and your dining room table will be complete. When you’re looking for seating, use mismatched wooden chairs or even benches. With this style, the older and more worn the pieces look, the better. You can then accessorize by adding stone and ceramic pots filled with sunflowers or herbs, prancing roosters, and a homey rug for the sink area.

Don’t Forget to Accessorize
When it comes down to accessories, you’ll want items that have an antique or worn look. Once again, leather and wood make perfect accents, keeping the natural theme flowing throughout your home. A perfect addition to a living room or bedroom might be a distressed wooden trunk or an antique-style mirror. A great place to find a mirror is a flea market. Even if they contain a few dings, it just adds to the rustic appeal.

Rustic décor is all about warmth, security, and family. With a rustic décor, you are creating comfortable, inviting spaces in your home, no matter where you reside. A home should make you feel warm, comfortable, and secure at the end of the day. You won’t find a home quite as welcoming and beautiful as one decorated in the rustic style. Country or city—it doesn’t matter. This is one style you will truly fall in love with.

5 Easy Tips to Feng Shui Your Bedroom

Published by under Interior Decorating

One of the most popular places to practice fend shui is in the bedroom. The bedroom is one room in your home that should be a peaceful retreat, and with feng shui, you can create the proper setting in which to get restful sleep every night. Feng shui is a method by which you can design and decorate a balanced room that’s infused with positive energy.

There are several feng shui guidelines to follow in the bedroom, but some are more important than others. Consider some of these helpful feng shui tips to get you on your way to a balanced and peaceful bedroom.

1. The main feng shui element in the room should be your bed.
In your bedroom, a wood bed is the primary source of intimate, personal energy. You want your bed to meet your every need, from the headboard to the mattress. So if you have to make a choice, choose to invest your money in the bed.

2. By placing the bed in a feng shui position, you can create optimal positive energy and love.
When arranging the room, you should be able to see the doorway from the bed, but it shouldn’t be directly in line with the door. The bed should also be on a strong supporting wall.

3. According to feng shui, both sides of your bed need to be balanced in energy.
This means you have the choice of placing side tables on both sides of the bed or on neither side. Also, try to keep any sharp angles—either from the tables or from the other furniture in the room—from facing the bed.

4. When you remove the television, you maintain balance in the room.
The less electricity flowing through your bedroom the better, as removing as many electrical appliances as possible is a key part of feng shui. EMFs can cause an internal imbalance, and your body doesn’t take them in when you remove electrical flow from the room. Also, when you don’t have the distraction of a television or computer, you’ll be able to get better sleep at night.

5. When designing your bedroom, don’t get obsessed with the rules of feng shui.
You may not be able to follow all the correct feng shui recommendations if your bedroom is small. If you focus too much on what’s “correct,” you may end up feeling stressed out and disappointed. Keep in mind that, in the end, feng shui is really about positive energy. If you do what you can with the space you have, then you’ll be able to make the room comfortable for you.

Some people may not believe in feng shui; others may find it too difficult to incorporate into their décor. However, the basic principle is simply to have the healthiest, most comfortable room possible. Feng shui decorating is accompanied by a long philosophical tradition, which demonstrates exactly how these principles can improve your sense of being and your life. If you’re looking to improve your bedroom or simply the feel of your oak bedroom furniture with some feng shui techniques, these tips can help get you started.

Budget Decorating – Living Room

Published by under Interior Decorating

In most households, the living room is one of the most used spaces. It’s often used for relaxing, entertaining, and spending family time together. The more time you spend in that room, the more you may feel you need to change the look. Luckily, changing the look of your living room doesn’t have to cost thousands of dollars. If you’re looking to renovate your room and make it exciting again, here are a few suggestions.

Rearrange the Furniture
You don’t have to spend a dime to get a whole new look. Simply rearrange the furniture. If you find a different focal point for the room, you can then rearrange the room to focus on that new area. This is so simple to do and give the room a completely new look and flow. Although this doesn’t require any new furniture, if you really wanted to mix things up, you could add an end table or other inexpensive piece.

Change the Paint Color on the Walls
Paint is relatively inexpensive but can dramatically change the look of a room. Your best bet is to choose a color that’s already in the room’s color scheme. By choosing a matching or complementary color, you can develop a whole new feel for the room. If you don’t have the time or money to paint the entire room, you can simply choose one wall and make it an accent wall. By painting it an accent color, you can give the room some more interest.

Add Inexpensive Accessories to the Furniture
It’s not necessary to spend a fortune on furniture accessories to change the style of a living room. Look around your home and see if you have any decorative pillows, throws, vases, baskets, flower arrangements, candles, and lamps, that you can take from a different room. You can give you couch a totally different style with some new decorative pillows. By adding different pillows to your neutral couch, you can easily turn a country-style piece to a contemporary style. Adding candles and baskets to the oak end tables and oak bookshelves in the room can really mix up the décor.

Change the Window Treatments
Different window treatments often allow different amounts of light to enter, and this can completely change a room’s look. You can also change the color, patterns, and type of material easily with window treatments. If you already have window treatments installed, you can always add new ones to those existing ones—such as adding a fabric valance to a window that already has blinds.

If you don’t have a lot of money to spend but you want to change the look of your living room, with a little resourcefulness and creativity you can come up with a new style. Follow these tips to create a whole new look. Then the next time you have friends and family over for a gathering, they may not even recognize the place.

Decorating Your Bathroom in a Breezy Ocean Theme

One popular way to decorate a bathroom is with an ocean theme. There are plenty of décor items available that can help give your bathroom that unique ocean look so that you feel like you are at the beach every time you set foot in the room. Follow these tips, and with a little creativity, you can come up with a fabulous ocean theme for your bathroom.

Paint the Bathroom with Colors from the Ocean
You can quickly transform your bedroom into an ocean retreat by painting it blue, green, tan, and cream: the colors of the ocean. Paint the walls cream and then add a turquoise accent wall for a distinctive twist to the ocean theme. Add more color to the room by adding yellow, which will work to highlight the feeling of warm sunlight over the ocean. If you’re really creative, then a really unique idea is to paint an ocean mural on one of the walls. This is a great way to fill a large space and can add a wonderful focal point to the décor. If you’re doing this in the master bathroom, then you can create the feeling that your bedroom is right on the ocean.

Use Real Ocean Accessories
Use items you would find down at the beach or ocean, rather than buying all your décor items from the store. It’s amazing how things such as shells and sand make such great additions to the room. A basket of shelf or bottles of sand on a shelf will add instant ambiance to the room.

Hang an Ocean-Themed Shower Curtain
One of the first things people see when they walk into a bathroom is the shower curtain. Hang an ocean-themed shower curtain for all to see. In this way, you can really play up the shower area. You can go with a more playful theme, perhaps with pictures of fish, or choose one with a beautiful ocean or beach scene on it. Decide whether you’re trying to create an ocean retreat or a fun beach theme, and choose your curtain accordingly.

Look for Themed Accessories to Complete the Look
You should have no problem finding ocean-themed bathroom accessories, as this type of theme is rather popular. Look for things that have some sort of ocean-related aspect to them, such as soap dishes, wastebaskets, bath mats, and towels. A fish-shaped soap dish would work great with a fun variation of this theme, whereas elegant shell-shaped soaps in a blue soap dish would be more appropriate for a serious ocean retreat.

You can use an ocean theme for a master bathroom, as easily as you can use it for a child’s bathroom. After all, there are many different variations upon this theme, from sand sculptures to fish, to lighthouses. Have fun with this theme, and be sure to include your own personality when designing the style.
